CVHS students to explore values in “The Addams Family”
BY JEFF FALK
At 6 p.m. on Thursday, April 3, performing arts students from Conestoga Valley High School (CVHS) will present their production of “The Addams Family” to a group of local senior citizens at the school’s auditorium, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster. The show, which is free to attend and included as part of CVHS’ Senior Gold Card program for school district residents age 62 and older, will mark the students’ first public performance of the show.
“It’s just a way to reach out to our community,” said Gabe Whitman, the director of “The Addams Family.” “It’s something Conestoga Valley had done before I came here. We want to be able to reach all ages and not just our students’ parents and friends. It’s giving the community an opportunity to see our show.”
“Thursday is our last dress rehearsal,” continued Whitman. “It gives students
an opportunity to have an audience before opening night. They don’t get those things when we’re rehearsing.”
Those same CVHS theater and drama students will also perform “The Addams Family” on Friday, April 4, at 7 p.m.; Saturday, April 5, at 7 p.m.; and Sunday, April 6, at 2 p.m. in the high

IU13 conference slated for June 12
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
The 29th annual LancasterLebanon IU13 Education Conference will be held Thursday, June 12, at Conestoga Valley High School, 2110 Horseshoe Road, Lancaster.
“We want people to be aware of what we offer, but we also want to give them evidence-based practices to use with students,” said Chanda Telleen, who is an associate program director and supervisor of the training and consultation team for the
IU13. “People are coming to our conference as a way to enhance their professional learning.
We have presenters from our partner PaTTAN (Pennsylvania Training and Technical Assistance Network). We have presenters from institutes of higher education. We have practitioners presenting. We try to expose our audience to the latest evidence-based practices to support our students.”
Registration and a continental breakfast will run from 7:45 to 8:30 a.m., followed by a welcome

said Whitman. “This show is based on family values and putting family first, and not just the families we live with. We should make that a priority. One of the things our drama department has always done is put others first and help each other out. It’s cool to see that dynamic. (The students) have really embodied that. This is all about us working together.”
Divided evenly among seniors, juniors, sophomore and freshmen, about 60 CVHS students are involved with the production of “The Addams Family.” That group includes 19 members of the cast, 32 crew members and eight student musicians collaborating with community members to make up the orchestra.
The cast features Alex Rivera as Gomez Addams, Natalie Hopta as Morticia Addams, Gwen Unruh as Wednesday Addams, Clementine Johnson as Pugsley Addams, Philip Le as Uncle Fester, Samantha Radwanski as Grandma, Tahjon Ferron as Lurch,

Taking soccer to the next level
BY JEFF FALK
It’s really all about providing opportunities for girls and young women. The Lancaster Inferno motivates females to take advantage of opportunities and to make the most of them. For the Inferno, soccer is more than a game; it’s a transformational tool.
“Our goal is to empower these girls and women and use soccer as a platform for the development and growth,” said Stephanie Cleaves, executive director of the Lancaster Inferno and the head coach of the club’s first team. “Eighty percent of female CEOs played sports. It’s our goal to develop not just the athletes but the individuals as future leaders and to build confidence. Having

Telleen said the IU13 is thankful for support from vendors and business sponsors. The conference will also serve as a recruitment tool. “We are highlighting some students,” Telleen said. “There are some interns who will be at our conference. She noted the importance of interesting young people in teaching to address teacher shortages.
The IU13 supports students with disabilities from birth to graduation and beyond, Telleen said. “We work with families. We work with our 22 member districts to provide training and technical assistance and special programming for students with disabilities,” she added. There is a wide variety of programs that offer support. “My team offers training and technical assistance,” said Telleen. “We do go out to the various districts, but we also host training or job groups here at Burle (Corporate Park) in our conference center. We also have programs within districts for children with disabilities, supporting students with multiple disabilities or autism.”

A unique place to earn a merit badge
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
It is a historic setting to meet merit badge requirements.
The Railroad Museum of Pennsylvania, 300 Gap Road, Strasburg, will hold on-site railroading merit badge workshops from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays, March 29, April 26, May 17, June 21 and Aug. 23.
For more information or to register, go to www. rrmuseumpa.org and click on “Events” under the “Events & Programs” tab.
The workshops are for boys and girls ages 11 through 17 who are involved in Scouting, so they can learn by working with historic artifacts and model trains. Scouts who
complete the program earn an official railroading merit badge.
“We are told (the railroading merit badge) is a specialized merit badge to offer, so I think that adds to the draw this museum has,” said museum educator Jesse Shetrom. “It’s just a cool venue for it.”
Museum educator Juliette O’Connor said the on-site workshops regularly attract Scouts from as far away as New York. One family took a flight from Florida just to attend the workshop, then immediately boarded another for a trip back home, she said.
The workshops are made up of four activities, two in the morning and two more in the afternoon. Scouts are

G-scale is a track gauge for model railways that is large and durable so that it can be used outdoors.

A chance to power up

BY ANN MEAD ASH
When young people ages 8 to 12 who attend Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) Power Camp asked for more sports to be offered at camp, area representatives Diana Roth, Kyle Martin, and Emily Johnson responded. This year, the New Holland camp will offer baseball and track and field in addition to five other sports, and the Manheim camp will offer lacrosse, in addition to six other sports.
The New Holland Power Camp will be held at Petra
Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland, from Monday, June 16, to Thursday, June 19. The Manheim Power Camp will be held at Manheim Brethren in Christ Church, 54 N. Penryn Road, Manheim, from Monday, July 14, through Thursday, July 17.
Roth said that the theme for this year’s camps is “Glory,” based on II Corinthians 3:18. The faith-based curriculum will focus on the question “What are you chasing?” by examining the quest for individual glory versus

reflecting God’s glory. In addition to baseball and track and field, the New Holland camp will offer basketball, field hockey, flag football, lacrosse, and soccer. Roth and Martin are the camp directors. The Manheim camp, which is directed by Johnson, will offer baseball, basketball, field hockey, soccer, volleyball, and wrestling, in addition to lacrosse.
Camps begin at 9 a.m.
each day and run until 3:30 p.m. Lunch is provided. Each day has a different dress-up theme. Although the themes for this year’s camps have not

Bank offers customer service in American Sign Language

Fulton Bank has introduced a new customer service channel for deaf and hard-of-hearing customers, connecting them directly with trained representatives who are fluent in American Sign Language.
The new service, provided in partnership with 360 Direct Access, will be available on the contact page of the bank’s website. During business hours, customers can click a link and engage in a video conversation with a representative using sign language. After business hours, customers can leave a video message.
For deaf customers who visit one of the bank’s more than 200 financial
centers, there will also be an option to scan a QR code to connect with a sign language interpreter via their mobile device. The interpreter can then translate for the customer and financial center staff.

been chosen, Roth noted that Wacky Wednesday is always a favorite. Each day begins with worship featuring a worship band and a speaker, usually a local pastor, who speaks on the camp theme. “The speaker at the New Holland camp will be Petra pastor Brian Coles,” reported Martin. The campers enjoy some Dance Dance Revolution time before heading outside for up to 90 minutes of skill work in their chosen sport. Following lunch, a testimony is given by a high school student or college intern. Afterward, campers practice and have more huddle time before taking part in a group competition, enjoying a snack, and joining in a closing assembly.
Volunteer coaches who work with the children are
often high school, college, or club coaches, and many serve for both weeks. Interns assist the directors and coaches. According to Roth, interns who have helped out at camp previously “know the drill,” so they will be given more leadership responsibility. “They will lead debrief time at the end of each day and be in charge of group competitions and games,” explained Martin. Huddles, groups of five to seven students, are overseen by a huddle leader. Huddle leaders are high school students who lead, guide, and encourage campers. About 50 huddle leaders are needed for a camp of 120 to 150 students, which is the number expected at both camps this year.

“They are musicians, a lot of them are athletes and a lot of them are involved with other extracurricular activities as well,” said Whitman of the cast and crew. “They’re wellrounded kids. (In recent years) we’ve had students doing theater, but it’s not their long-term goal.”
“‘The Addams Family’ musical has been unlike any musical we have done,” said Syd Castagna, the production’s student stage manager. “The singing, choreography and set have taken lots of work and dedication from everyone involved. It was a big undertaking, but it will be
one of our best and most memorable shows.”
Auditions for “The Addams Family” were conducted in the middle of December, and initial readthroughs in early January kicked off the start of the three-month rehearsal schedule. Since then, nary a day has gone by that the cast and crew hasn’t worked on some aspect of the show.
“I enjoy the learning process and how the (younger students) learn from the veterans,” said Whitman. “I also like helping students get beyond whatever their crutch is and become a better actor, actress or singer. I like the end stage, when the students are like ‘I just did it.’ Just seeing their faces and the joy they get.”

female role models is very important to that.”
Headquartered at Pod 2 in Rock Lititz, 201 Rock Lititz Blvd., the Lancaster Inferno and the Lancaster Inferno Football Club (F.C.) is a one-of-a-kind academy that promotes female soccer and its benefits. The program revolves around a series of competitive and instructional age-group teams, each more advanced than its predecessor.
There are financial fees associated with each level of the Lancaster Inferno academy.
“When it was initially launched, we wanted to provide a place for highlevel talent to play,” said Cleaves. “That evolved into wanting to have a feeder system for the top teams. We felt like there was a need to create a club that was all girls, making female athletes the top pursuit. Girls drop out of athletics at age 14 at twice the rate of boys. We’re trying to buck that trend.”
About 245 female athletes from all over Lancaster and Lebanon counties, ages 9 to 36, populate the Lancaster Inferno academy’s 12 teams - two highly competitive pre-professional teams and 10 youth teams. Some of the older players are former college and local high school stars, some are current high school players, some play soccer with other teams during
other seasons and some are relative newcomers just starting to appreciate the game.
The Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth teams practice at Spooky Nook Sports Complex and play some of their games at the Manheim Township Athletic Complex. Cleaves’ first team, which is made up of the program’s most advanced and competitive players, will be playing five home games at Penn Medicine Park, the Lancaster Stormers’ home stadium, during the 2025 season after calling Warwick High School home last year.
“They are serious players who want to take their games to the next level,” said Cleaves of the first team members. “They’re also players who want to be keep playing at a high level. It’s usually players who see themselves playing professionally; that’s who’s on our first team. We kind of fill that gap between college and pros.”
Many of the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth programs are year-round ventures with games contested during the spring and fall seasons. The Lancaster Inferno first team plays a 10-game regular season schedule in the pre-professional United Soccer League (USL) W League from May to July.
“We’re really big on professionalism, just how
we run things. We take pride in how we run it,” said Cleaves. “We’re a team for the community. When I tell that to players, it excites them. (The older players) want to be role models. It’s our goal not only to attract the best players, but also to develop them.”
Cleaves and her family purchased the franchise that would become the Lancaster Inferno in 2014. Six years later, the Lancaster Inferno founded an under-23 women’s premier team, and in 2022, the Lancaster Inferno F.C. youth program was launched.
“My favorite part is seeing the young players interact with the senior team players,” said Cleaves, a resident of Lititz. “They look starstruck, like, ‘That could be me some day.’ It really impacts you.”
“Seeing that there’s exciting opportunities is huge,” continued Cleaves. “(Players are) learning from experienced coaches. Some could go on to be professional players or coaches or referees. It’s about developing them as confident individuals in life. It teaches them life lessons and about the spirit of soccer. We want to make it an option if they want to play at a higher level.”

“Good Knight and Goodbye” was written by Conestoga Valley alumnus Peter Fenton in 2009 when Fenton was an eighth-grade student in teacher Suzanne Fisher’s English class. He was also a member of the play cast during both of his middle school years. Fenton proposed that he could write a better play than the one they just produced, and Fisher took him up on his challenge, promising him that if he could write a good play, she would direct it as the next year’s middle school production. Fenton wrote “Good Knight and Goodbye,” which became the school’s 2010 spring play. He went on to write Fisher’s final play, “The Thousand-Year Rose,” to celebrate her retirement from Conestoga Valley in 2017.
Since then, Fenton has become a professional playwright, screenwriter, and director, and Fisher has remained his mentor and production partner.
When the opportunity arose for Fisher to direct the middle school play again this year, she reached out to Fenton to bring back “Good Knight and Goodbye” for the 15th anniversary of the show.
Fisher and Fenton invite members of the 2010 “Good Knight and Goodbye” production to attend, as well as any cast members from Fisher’s 40 years of producing middle school plays at Conestoga Valley.
