Steps to Success to raise money in magical ways
BY JEFF FALK
Magic expands imaginations, sparks curiosity and fosters creativity. And to a different degree and on another level, so does Steps to Success.
That’s what Pennsylvania Entertainers Swap Meet and Sale and the local early childhood education and child care service have in common. That and the leadership of Michelle and Tait Harbaugh.
“Steps to Success is trying to help children expand their minds,” said Michelle, the founder and executive director of Steps to Success and Tait’s wife. “We want children to grow into people who explore and question things. It’s about developing critical thinking. They come up with all kinds of interesting answers about how magic is done.”
“There are some people who just want to figure things out,” said Tait, Michelle’s husband and a magician who goes by Papa Tater.
“Some don’t care how things are done. They just want to be amazed.”
The 11th edition of the annual PA Entertainers Swap Meet and Sale, a magical fundraiser for Steps to Success, will be conducted on Saturday, March 29, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola. The event, which is free and open to the public, is designed to introduce the entertainment value of magic to visitors, provide a foundation for beginning magicians and give

Newcomers and Neighbors:
After a while, it’s hard to tell the difference
BY JEFF FALK
Lancaster County is a warm, inviting and friendly place. Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster aims to epitomize that welcoming spirit.
Throughout its six decades, the social group has stayed
true to its original assimilation mission of turning newcomers into neighbors. But Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster has evolved into so much more.
“It is a fabulous group of women,” said Sue Bolton, Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster’s president. “I was

SkillsUSA has positive influence on LCCTC - Willow Street students
BY GEORGE DEIBEL
SkillsUSA is not “just a club” to members of the Willow Street chapter.
Several students who attend the Willow Street campus of Lancaster County Career & Technology Center (LCCTC) believe the organization offers a chance to be part of something special.
“SkillsUSA is the No. 1 workforce development organization for students,” explained Airamis
Condé, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, who is one of the chapter’s five officers. “(It) empowers students to become skilled professionals and career-ready leaders. SkillsUSA encourages students to step out of their comfort zone, have fun, and be themselves.”
Natalie Yang, a medical assistant student from Garden Spot, said the group has organized 25 Thanksgiving dinners for families in need, provided a holiday

divorced when I moved here, and when I first found the group, everyone came up to me and said hi. They’re very friendly. When people come to an activity or a session, it just gives you a warm, fuzzy feeling, so you want to join and participate in everything.”
Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster is limited to only women who are residents of Lancaster County. The group conducts regular lunch meetings on the second Wednesday of each month, usually at local restaurants, hotels or places like Bent Creek Country Club.
The general membership gatherings begin with social time at 11:30 a.m., followed by a short formal meeting; lunch; and then some sort of presentation, speech or discussion.
“The idea is to bring together newcomers to the county and people who have lived here for a while, sort of extend a neighborly helping hand,” said Bolton. “That’s really what the club is. We have members who have lived in Lancaster County for more than 30 years, and they’re the neighbors. We have people from all over who have moved to Lancaster County. It’s a way to develop a social life and meet people in the area.”
Newcomers and Neighbors’ membership numbers currently stand at 113. The members reside in all parts of Lancaster County, they originate from all walks of life, and they generally tend to be older.
Some are retired, some are grandmothers, some are widowed, some are housewives and some are stay-at-home mothers.
Bolton said that for some members, the group is a

way to stay active.
“I can’t speak for everyone in the group,” said Bolton. “For me, it was a chance to meet people in the area and do things I like to do with like-minded people. I’ve met great people and made friends.”
Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster is an active group. Included in the club’s variety of activities are local and regional day trips; arts and crafts; a pair of book clubs; concerts; shopping; games like mahjong, Mexican train, Scrabble and cards; recipe exchanges; and dinner dates. A nonprofit, Newcomers and Neighbors also engages in volunteering, fundraising activities and community service projects.
“We’re not just fun and games. We’re also community-oriented,” said Bolton. “When newcomers see all the activities and get to meet all the people, the club sells itself. Some people just like one activity, so they join for the things they like to do. You don’t have to do everything; you can pick and choose. Everyone joins for a different
reason. You make friends in the club, and you have spin-off groups. With some of the things we do, we allow spouses and partners to attend.”
Newcomers and Neighbors of Lancaster’s origins can be traced to 1968 and the Welcome Wagon of Lancaster East. The group, which is overseen by a board of directors, took on its current name in 1998.
“I want people to come join us,” said Bolton. “Just come to activities and see how much fun we are. We’re doing things for the community, and we have fun. When we get new members, we get new perspectives, and it opens us up to the possibility of new activities.”

Dinner will celebrate 30 years of LightShine Ministries
BY CAT SHANNON

For three decades, LightShine Ministries in Mount Joy has been bringing the love and light of God to the people of Alaska. You can support this mission at a dinner celebrating the organization’s 30th anniversary. The meal will be held at Lancaster Alliance Church, 210 Pitney Road, Lancaster, on Friday, April 11, from 5 to 8 p.m. The event will start with appetizers at 5:30 p.m., followed by dinner at 6 p.m. Beginning at 7 p.m., members of LightShine Ministries will share testimonies and discuss the 17 mission teams serving this year as well as longterm goals of the ministry, said Nancy Shaffer, who is organizing the event.

Ministries team works on a building in Alaska.
Dinner will feature roast turkey, stuffing, baked ham, vegetables, mashed potatoes and a large assortment of homemade desserts.
LightShine International Ministries began as a follow-up ministry for a music outreach to the biker and rock music culture, founded by Tom Denlinger and Jeff Zimmerman. Influenced by

Keith Green and Resurrection Band, the ministry initially focused on Christian metal music before transitioning to mission work in Alaska after Denlinger felt called by God to serve people in the state. Since 1995, LightShine has sent teams to support churches and youth camps, expanding its reach through leadership training. With a base in Palmer, Alaska, the ministry continues to grow, strengthening local churches and other outreach programs.
“For 30 years, we have been offering assistance to brothers and sisters in Christ by helping them build His Kingdom in the hearts of the people in Alaska,” Shaffer said. “We offer short-term missionary opportunities for people who love people, love the outdoors and desire to serve in places where churches need help.”

Stauffer and Dora (Sensenig) Stauffer. He attended the one-room schoolhouse on Pleasant Valley Road. At the age of 16, Wes met his beloved wife of 47 years, Marla (Bollinger) Stauffer. They were married on April 2,1977 at Middle Creek Church in Lititz. An avid outdoorsman, Wes loved deer hunting and spending time in nature. In his younger years, Wes traveled throughout the region with his uncle Amos and cousins participating in tractor pulls with their tractors; “Fido,” “Snoopy” and “Sneaky Pete.” He continued his passion by organizing the garden tractor pull at the Ephrata Fair for many years. He enjoyed restoring antique engines and chainsaws. Wes was an amazing husband, father, and grandfather who loved creating memories with his loved ones. Wes cherished family gatherings, camping trips, and telling stories to his grandchildren which brought him great joy.

A founding member of Cornerstone Mennonite Fellowship in Ephrata, Wes served the church in many roles including Treasurer, Sunday school teacher, leader of prayer meetings and mission board member. He had a deep love for Jesus and was always eager to share his faith, dedicate his time to speak about the gospel and offer wisdom to others. Wes especially enjoyed ministering to fairgoers at the Ephrata Fair by sharing the gospel message using beads that illustrate the plan of salvation. Wes was the owner of Wes Stauffer Equipment, where he worked diligently since the age of 19, to build and maintain his business. He sold and repaired Stihl chainsaws, BCS tillers, sawmills, mowers, and Amsoil. Wes loved talking with his customers about their equipment but more importantly about their families and his own, building lasting relationships with thousands throughout the region.

WESLEY S. STAUFFER
Wesley Sensenig Stauffer, 68, of Ephrata, passed away peacefully on Tuesday, March 4, 2025,
assists churches in remote areas to build Bible camps and maintain their church buildings.
“Our calling is unique,” Shaffer said. “Men and women who do not feel gifted to preach or start churches have been encouraged throughout the years by using their hands to serve the Lord by working with us. We make it our goal not only to minister to the church we are serving, but also to encourage our team members as well.”
She invites anyone who is interested in discovering more about the ministry to come to the dinner.

Coming to the event provides an opportunity to hear directly from the people serving, she said.
“This is a great way to hear about the ministry work we do in Alaska, meet the different team leaders and team members who have served in Alaska and hear from the hosts we serve in Alaska,” she explained. “If you are unable to serve on a team, there are opportunities to financially support our ministry by just attending the dinner and giving a donation.”
No tickets are needed for the dinner, which is by donation, but reservations are required. To reserve a seat, contact Shaffer at nbrown.brahma@gmail .com or call 717-712-6165 by Friday, March 28.
For more information on LightShine, visit https:// lightshineministries.org.
“This is our first fundraising dinner for our ministry,” she said. “The dinner is to raise funds to complete our mission base located in Palmer, Alaska. The projects include finishing the upstairs of the house, building a garage for the mission base director and his wife living at the base and then building a main garage to house our vehicles and tools.”

Steps to Success
established magicians an opportunity to network and share trade secrets.
There will be no structured performances at the event, but rather plenty of impromptu illusions, tricks, demonstrations and displays of magic.
“For most magicians, if you ask them to demonstrate something, they are more than happy to show you,” said Papa Tater. “For me, magic is bringing wonder to people. I love to amaze people. I love to make them laugh. Everyone is attracted to these things for different reasons. Some people like to be fooled. Some people like the comedy aspect. I’m doing it in a way to get laughter.”
“There’s magic going on,” said Michelle, “but it’s not on any schedule. Life is short. Come share our joy.”
As many as 150 magicians from Lancaster County, Reading, Maryland, New Jersey, Delaware, New York, Ohio and Virginia will be on hand selling and trading their wares on more than 40 tables set up at the venue. Donations toward Steps to Success will be accepted, and concessions like hot dogs and sauerkraut, black bean chili, sloppy joes, potato chips and drinks including coffee and water will be available for purchase.
“It’s a social event for the magicians,” said Michelle. “It’s a central place to meet. They get to chat face to face. For the magicians, it’s fun and social time.”
“For a lot of the magicians, they get to see friends they don’t normally see,” said Papa Tater. “Apparently the magic community likes this event because they do tell me to do it again.”
The Harbaughs are hoping to raise about $1,000 through the event. The money will go toward funding upkeep, improvements and new equipment for Steps to Success’ facilities at Zion Lutheran.
Fundraisers and donations make up a small portion of the monies needed to fund Steps to Success. The majority of its income comes from the Pennsylvania Bureau of Charitable Organizations and fees paid by private sources.
“I think the record for the money raised (by the event) has been broken every year,” said Papa Tater.
“Every year (the event) has gotten bigger, more people and more donations,” said Michelle.
Established in 1995, Steps to Success is a local nonprofit that offers early education and child care to families in the Conestoga Valley and Donegal school districts. The organization currently serves 427 children ages 6 weeks to 13 years at seven locations.
Steps to Success employs 67 full-time, part-time and seasonal workers.
“We try to be a service to the community,” said Papa Tater.

“SkillsUSA is important because as a student who has been in multiple clubs before, SkillsUSA has been the most beneficial for me,”

said Ky Logan, who is a veterinary assistant student from Elizabethtown. “It has helped me grow socially and build connections with others who have fields of studies in different areas or the same interests as me. There are also many different opportunities for community service, which some schools require. I think it’s beneficial SkillsUSA provides that opportunity for students to be able to get those hours that they may need to meet graduation requirements.”
Ky added, “It’s not just a club for me. The competitions and community service projects we do are important.”

Sara Rager, an aspiring patient care technician from Manheim Township, stated that being part of SkillsUSA has helped her improve her grades.
“We get to come together and form something special,” said Sara. “That’s why I feel like it’s so much more than a club, as Ky said. It has helped each individual, especially me, with thriving and striving for what I want.”
One of 21 Willow Street campus students who competed in the SkillsUSA district competition, Sara finished first in extemporaneous speaking to earn a trip to the state competition, which will be held Wednesday through Friday, April 2 to 4, in Hershey.

Grace Wagner, a dental assistant student from Solanco, also finished first at districts and will compete at states.

At districts, Sara was given five minutes to do research for her speech with the topic, “How has responsibility made you grow in SkillsUSA, and why is it important?”
“I’m super excited, looking forward to my state competition,” said Grace. “I’ve been working very hard, studying hard recently for that, and I’m excited to see what the outcome will be.”

zone. I’m very grateful that she encouraged me to do that because I feel like this (club) is going to lead to very large opportunities for my education and my future.”

“I told them about my experiences in SkillsUSA and how I work with a team,” Sara said. “In the past, I’ve had a hard time working with a team, and now, I’ve worked with a lot of intelligent minds and brilliant people, and we can come up with a lot of great ideas.”
Grace said she joined SkillsUSA because of the advice of her instructor Rachel Sprecher. “I had been having thoughts about doing it before, but I wasn’t too confident,” said Grace, who is considering returning to LCCTC for postsecondary education.
“I decided to listen to her advice, and I decided to step out of my comfort

Britney Valentin, a patient care technician student from Conestoga Valley, attended the state delegate conference on March 5 at the Dauphin County Technical School. It’s a Central Region workshop to prepare delegates for the procedures and events at the April state competition in Hershey.
“Being a delegate means to have an important role in helping shape the future of SkillsUSA,” said Britney.
Mason Houser, a diesel equipment and technology student from Lampeter-Strasburg, competed in districts. “I wanted to test my skills, how quickly I can do tasks, and to see how much I actually know,” said Mason. “I chose the CTC for the diesel program. My uncle worked in diesel as a semi-truck operator, and I grew up on that (and thought), ‘Hey, I want to do this.’”
