Swap meet to aid Steps to Success

Nearlya decade ago, Tait Harbaugh, better known as Papa Tater, comedian, magician, and entertainer for people of all ages, had an idea. Having watched his fellow entertainers and experienced his own overload of purchasing magic tricks when he first began performing, Papa Tater thought that maybe a swap meet would be a great way to make some of his extra inventory disappear and help support Steps to Success, a nonprofit Christian preschool and day care service directed by his wife, Michelle Harbaugh.

The event was so successful over the years that what Papa Tater believes to be the seventh Entertainers’ Swap Meet will be held at Zion Lutheran Church, 18 Quarry Road, Leola, on Saturday, March 25, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. More than 40 tables are booked, plus a special swap table where attendees may swap an item of equal value for another or make a donation to

Steps in exchange for an item. The event, which is free to visit and open to the public, also includes a magic mini-convention.

While the swap meet is focused on entertainment equipment and props, Papa Tater noted that the door is left open for tricks. “It’s a room full of entertainers, mostly magicians, and that can be fun,” he said. “You get to walk around and talk to magicians.”

“And they like to show off,” added Michelle.

Papa Tater noted that while the mini-convention is mostly magic oriented, juggling and puppet supplies are often available. “We really never know what will show up, which is part of what I love about this,” he said. “We get a roomful of magicians and some are biggername magicians, so the things that show up are incredible … things I never thought I would see in person or something I never knew existed.” Among the items that have been offered for purchase was a bed of nails that Papa Tater had a chance

Speller looks to regional bee

Madison Gonzalez was not always the stellar speller he is now. “Toward the end of elementary school, I slowly got better (at spelling),” said Gonzalez. “It wasn’t until last year that I realized how good I had gotten.”

Last year - the spring semester of 2022 - was a milestone for Gonzalez because it was the first time he competed in a spelling bee at a higher level than his own school,

Adult Sports League takes off

specifically the WITF Central PA Spelling Bee, which was held virtually due to COVID-19 concerns. The journey of Gonzalez, then a Gerald G. Huesken Middle School seventhgrader, to the regional level began when English teacher Vicki Henderson held a spelling bee in her class and Gonzalez was one of two final students. “I had to spell one more word, and it was ‘meteor,’” recalled Gonzalez, who then competed against 14 other students in a spelling bee for all seventh- graders.

“We are always adding programs and creating opportunities,” said Risa Paskoff, executive director of Aaron’s Acres. During the winter, the organization added the Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League to its offerings for adults with disabilities. The league joined existing sports programs such as the Chuckie Magee Flag Football League, which began in the fall of 2022. Paskoff pointed out that Challenger Little League of Lancaster County is available in the spring. Challenger has given individuals with special needs a chance to play baseball each year for nearly three decades.

After the flag football program attracted 20 members who participated in regular games at the Manheim Brethren in Christ Church on Saturdays from August through early November, Aaron’s Acres organizers wanted to offer a winter program, dubbed Aaron’s Acres Adult Sports League. “We started it at the beginning of February,” said Paskoff, who noted the program has been held each Saturday from 10 a.m. to noon at the Lancaster Brethren in Christ Church on Fruitville Pike, with the last installment set for March 18. “We opened it to adults ages 21 to 40 as with the flag football,” explained Paskoff. “We didn’t know if they would like See Aaron’s Acres pg 2

kickball or soccer or floor hockey, so we did two weeks of each.” The rotation began with kickball, which some of the participants had never played before. Next, the program featured soccer and is finishing with floor hockey. Halfway through each session, the group took a break for a snack. More than 20 participants and four volunteers took part. “They loved kickball. It was so much fun,” said Paskoff, who noted that in the future, she hopes to have more volunteers at the sessions.

Because of the short duration and number of volunteers, parents of participants are required to remain at the venue. “It gives the parents

time to mingle and (network),” said Paskoff, who noted one participant’s mother had moved to the state only recently and was able to learn about resources from other parents. The participant was happy to take part in the activity. “He’s very social, and he was so excited to be with other people,” said Paskoff.

Because of the success of the flag football league and the winter sports programming, Paskoff said, Aaron’s Acres plans to hold the programs again. “It’s just continuing the mission of providing meaningful programs to people with disabilities and expanding the ages,” she said.

“It’s another opportunity

for individuals with disabilities to be together for social time and also be physically active, and it gives families times to connect.”

Aaron’s Acres holds a sixweek summer program to serve about 200 children with disabilities. In the summer of 2022, the camp moved to New Holland, and Paskoff said the organization plans to hold camp in the New Holland Community Memorial Park again in 2023. Paskoff noted the organization continues to look for an existing building to renovate to meet its needs.

This is a professional puppet that sold for maybe $500 new.” Performance-related items that are encouraged include items related to flow arts, acrobatics, face painting, balloon

twisting, and DJ equipment.

Steps to Success will provide food by donation. Traditionally, hot dogs and sauerkraut and baked goods have been on the menu.

According to Papa Tater, the goal has not changed since he first envisioned the event.

“The objective is to hold a successful fundraiser for Steps and to help the magic community to redistribute tricks and supplies,” he said.

Fairmount posts events

Pastor Robert Gerhart from Bally will come to Fairmount on Thursday, March 23, at 2 p.m. to tell the story of Mennonite missionary Annie Clemmer Funk, using special chalks, lighting, and music. The 45minute program will take place in the Farm Crest Community Room Chapel, 1100 Farm Crest Drive, Ephrata, on the Fairmount campus. Funk had served for six years as a teacher in India and was returning to her parents’ home near Bally on the Titanic. She had celebrated her

38th birthday on the Titanic just two days before dying after its fateful collision with an iceberg. The presentation will take the audience back to Funk’s Pennsylvania homestead and then to her missionary activity in India before concluding with her journey home in April 1912.

The program is free and open to the public, and no reservations are required. Directions can be found at www.fairmounthomes.org.

In addition, a ham and cheese sandwich fundraiser,

held jointly with the local Youth for Truth group, is now underway at Fairmount. The ham and cheese sandwiches may be ordered through Friday, March 31. Orders may be placed by calling 717-354-1800 or stopping by the front desk at Fairmount. The sandwiches will be available for pickup on Saturday, April 15, from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. just inside the front door of the Wheat Ridge building. Proceeds from the fundraiser will be used for the benefit of Fairmount residents in financial need.

FCA to host Power Camps

The Fellowship of Christian Athletes (FCA) will host Power Camp, a faith-based sports day camp for children ages 8 to 12. Power Camp uses the platform of athletics to share the Gospel and grow the faith of young athletes. Each day will include sportspecific training from local high school and college coaches, speakers, and biblical discussions led by high

school FCA athletes.

Camps will be held from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Mondays through Thursdays. Camps will be held from June 12 to 15 at Westminster Presbyterian Church, 2151 Oregon Pike, Lancaster; from June 19 to 22 at Petra Church, 565 Airport Road, New Holland; and from July 10 to 13 at Manheim Brethren in Christ, 54 N. Penryn Road,

Manheim. Various sport options will be available at each location.

The registration cost includes a T-shirt, Bible, daily lunch, and snacks. For details or to register, visit www.lancasterfca.org /camps. Space is limited. For more details, contact Tim Van Dalen at 717-327-7512 or tvandalen@fca.org. Scholarships are available by request, based on need.

“I got first place, and the first and second (place) students did the virtual (competition),” said Gonzalez. At the regional level, more than 30 students from 11 counties took part in the contest. Gonzalez came in 10th, and he remembers hearing the telltale beep when he misspelled his word.

Gonzalez’s road to this year’s competition actually began in 2022, when his eighth-grade English class spelling bee was held a few days after Thanksgiving. “There were 19 of us,” said Gonzalez. “It was more inclusive because the top four went to the grade spelling bee.” The following Friday, Dec. 2, about 35 studentsrepresenting the top students from each participating grade - began the next round. Gonzalez placed second in the competition, but that did not clinch his elimination because a written spelling bee score based on a WITF test was factored in. “I was the only one who advanced in the WITF

written spelling bee, so I am the sole survivor,” said Gonzalez, who will compete against more than 30 others in the regional competition at the WITF Public Media Center in Harrisburg on Saturday, March 18.

The winner of the regional bee will compete in the Scripps National Spelling Bee to be held later in the spring in Washington, D.C. Since this is the last year Gonzalez is eligible to compete in the program, he knows many students and teachers at his school are counting on him to do well. “Two days before my spelling bee ... we will have a party in my sixth-period English class,” said Gonzalez, who noted that the event was planned to wish him luck at the competition.

Gonzalez was concerned about the amount of time he was using to prepare for the regional round, since he had been preparing for PSSA testing at school. “There’s a lot of pressure,” he said.

work titled “Be Still and Know.” Some of Smith’s other songs include “Stand in the Light,” “Great You Are,” “Only Love,” “Sparrow,” “Halo,” and “Love Lives On.” He is the highest-selling artist to ever emerge from NBC’s Emmywinning series.

His mother, Meg Adams, noted that they try to study in the evenings, with Adams giving Gozalez words to spell. “There are crazy words you don’t hear on a regular basis,” she said.

“The French words were my big problem last year,” said Gonzalez, who speaks Spanish as well as English.

“(Madison) is a fantastic speller, and he loves language,” Adams added.

Gonzalez noted that he favors words involving chemistry, science, and geography, but his favorite word is one he learned last year. “The word is ‘aibohphobia,’ and it is the fear of palindromes and it is a palindrome,” he exclaimed.

As the days get longer and the weather warmer, the high school sporting world shifts its attention outside. Before that move goes mainstream, the Conestoga Valley bowling team put a bow on its 202223 season by taking part in the District 3 Championship and the Eastern PA Regional Championship.

First for the Buckskins was a trip to Clearview Lanes in Mount Joy for the District 3 Championship, held on Feb. 25. Only three Bucks qualified for the district tournament, with Ryan Muckle and Daniel Subers repping the boys and Jocelyn Ross the Lady Buckskins.

Bowlers, swimmers compete in district championships

Muckle started and finished slow with games of 195 and 155, but in between he posted games of 231, 235 and 247 to push his qualifying round total to 1063. That left the junior 23 pins shy of the finals and in 13th place in the 40-person field.

Subers was unable to find his groove, cracking 200 with only his final game of qualifying. That 227 followed games of 155, 198, 174 and 167 and gave the freshman a 921 qualifying score, slotting him 35th.

Ross, like Subers, was unable to get on track, posting games of 158, 189, 165, 184 and 183, leaving the junior in 14th place on the girls’ side, her 879 series

falling 94 pins off the finals pace.

A week later the Buckskins split time between Leisure Lanes in Lancaster and 222 Dutch Lanes in Ephrata taking part in the Eastern PA Regional Bowling Championships that were held March 3 and 4.

Josiah Casler joined Muckle and Subers in the boys’ singles qualifying, while Ross was the lone Lady Buck once again. That did not stop Ross from posting the highest finish, settling into 40th position on the girls’ side. Ross started well, bowling a 213, but faded from there with games of 179, 185, 155 and 132 to finish with an 864 qualifying score.

Muckle was the top finisher on the boys’ side, his 969 series placing him 48th in qualifying. Casler also cracked the 900-pin barrier in qualifying, finishing 75th with a 923 thanks to games of 182, 202, 180, 180 and 179. Subers tallied 867 pins in qualifying and finished 106th thanks to two games of 193 to go along with his 154, 140 and 187.

Conestoga Valley also qualified for the Eastern PA Regional as a team with Evan Zimmerman and Ethan Tardibuono joining Muckle, Casler, Subers and Ross for a 14th-place finish. Casler just missed a perfect game, posting a 298 in between his 202 and 192, giving him a teamhigh 692 series. Muckle and Ross also bowled all three games, with Muckle finishing with a 589 series and a 233 high game. Ross’ high game

was 200, which, along with games of 198 and 166, gave her a 564 series. Zimmerman (379), Tardibuono (301) and Subers (374) bowled two games apiece to round out the CV contingent.

SWIMMING

The Conestoga Valley swimming team sent just two swimmers, Connor Ludwig and Daniel Ivanchikov, to Cumberland Valley High School for the District 3-3A Championships on March 3 and 4. The pair combined for four events, two each, with Ludwig in the 100-freestyle, Ivanchikov the 500-freestyle and both in the 200freestyle.

Ivanchikov extended his season by finishing in a sixth-place tie with Governor Mifflin’s William Troy in the 200-free. Both touched the wall at 1:44.60, earning both a spot at Bucknell University

for the PIAA Championships. Ivanchikov also took sixth in the 500-free, where his 4:47.44 left him as the first alternate for the PIAA meet.

“He made qualifying for states, one of his goals for the season, and all his hard work and dedication has paid off,” said head coach Bard Raasch. “He is continuing on with an amazing senior season at Bucknell.”

Ludwig’s top finish came in the 200-free, where his 49.02 was just 0.03 seconds off his personal best time and left him 19th in the final standings. Ludwig just missed his personal best in the 200-free, posting a 1:50.33 that slotted him 22nd in the final standings. “I am so proud of Connor for all his times this season,” said Raasch. “He PR’d in all eight individual events, not by small amounts but by bigtime drops!”

“Green Project” grants available

The Sierra Club - Lancaster Group announced a request for proposals deadline of Friday, March 31, for its next round of “Green Project” grants. Any Lancaster County organization with a project that promotes sustainability, expands environmental awareness, and improves

green infrastructure is eligible to apply for a grant. The Lancaster Group will offer its expertise and labor to support those projects that are awarded grants.

The program annually awards grants of up to $500 to charitable, educational, or business associations that

demonstrate a commitment to the Sierra Club’s mission of exploring, enjoying, and protecting the planet in Lancaster County. When applying for a grant, organizations should consider how their projects relate to an ecological preservation or educational effort that, for example, focuses on a topic such as native plantings, pollinator plants, organic gardens, composting programs, hands-on learning, or stormwater management, rain gardens, and rain barrels.

To apply and learn more, visit www.lancastersierra club.org/grant-program. Access to the application is at the bottom of the page.

After submission, an email will be returned to confirm that the proposal has been received. Winners will be announced on Earth Day, Saturday, April 22. After the announcement, a list of the awardees will be posted at www.lancastersierra club.org. For additional information about the program, contact Jim Meenan at 717-475-0586 or jimsmeenan@gmail.com.

Advoz offers training

Advoz, Lancaster’s mediation and restorative justice center, will offer a new opportunity for volunteers to help build healthier and more equitable communities by facilitating restorative justice dialogue with youths who commit crimes and those they may have impacted. Restorative justice is a practice that enables those affected by crime or conflict to be directly involved in resolving the issues they face, while also providing a safe and supportive space for individuals to communicate, stay accountable, and rebuild relationships. A volunteer facilitator is responsible for facilitating conversations with both parties individually and between those affected by the crime.

Advoz, 53 N. Duke St., Lan-

Taco ’Bout a Party planned

caster, will host an introductory training in Conflict Communication & Culture on Friday, March 31. The specialized training sessions in Restorative Facilitation will take place via Zoom from 3 to 6 p.m. on Tuesdays, April 4 to 18, and in person from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. on Friday, April 21, and Saturday, April 22.

Volunteer candidates can use the code COM-DISC to register for a discount. CEUs and CLEs are available to those taking the training professionally. To register and find out more about being a restorative facilitator, visit https://advoz.org/volunteer.

To learn more, contact Krista Rittenhouse at krista@advoz.org or 717397-2404. The deadline for registration is Friday, March 17.

We are fortunate to live in an area that has long been regarded as the “Garden Spot of America.” Generational farming is a part of the Lancaster County culture. In fact, we lead the nation in young farmers. According to the most recent Economic Impact study by the Pennsylvania Department of Agriculture, 14% of farms in Pennsylvania had a young producer (defined as someone age 35 or younger) operating as the primary farmer. At last count, Lancaster County had 2,400 young producers, twice as much as

the second-ranked county in the nation, LaGrange County, Ind. In addition, Lancaster County leads the nation in farmland preservation, with more than 113,000 acres preserved. As promising as that sounds for the future, we’re still losing more than 1,200 acres of Lancaster County farmland each year to development, according to the Lancaster Farmland Trust (LFT), a nonprofit organization with the mission of preserving agriculture and stewarding the land in Lancaster County. For more information on LFT, visit https:// lancasterfarmlandtrust.org.

Farming can be a backbreaking, often undervalued vocation that doesn’t stop at 5 p.m. on Friday. Like we often do with first responders and the military, thank a farmer for his or her service to our community. Look at labels and buy locally. See where your milk, produce, and meat are coming from. When you shop at local supermarkets, if you don’t see local produce in season, ask why the store isn’t providing locally sourced foods. Encourage the store to offer local produce so shoppers can easily support local farmers.

The Lancaster County landscape is dotted with roadside produce stands when crops are in season. Most of these stands and farmers markets won’t open until later in the spring or summer. Below is a list of some of the many locations where you can get fresh local produce, meats, and cheeses.

Did you know?

Farmers and growers face a significant threat in the years to come as industrial agriculture operations continue to expand. According to the National Resources Defense Council, industrial agriculture is the large-scale, intensive production of crops and animals. Such operations make it more difficult for small farmers and growers to turn a profit, and they often involve the use of chemical fertilizers and pesticides. The use of such products

poses an additional threat to small farmers and growers, as the Union of Concerned Scientists notes that the heavy application of fertilizers and pesticides accelerates soil erosion and increases pest problems.

Consumers concerned by the effects of industrial agriculture on the environment and on small farmers’ and growers’ ability to earn a good living can support efforts such as regenerative farming and organic farms.

Dietitians to offer free virtual cooking classes

March is National Nutrition Month, and the Giant Company team of dietitians is ready with ideas to help make well-being easier. For nutrition inspiration all month long, community members are invited to join the Giant Company for free, live classes via Zoom for families and chefs of all ages.

Produce Spotlight will be presented by the dietitians every Monday at noon. Participants will learn how frozen fruits and vegetables can add ease, convenience and nutrition to their meals. March is also Frozen Food Month, and the dietitians will highlight ways that home cooks can bring delicious and inspiring dishes to life for both dinner and dessert.

Wellbeing Workshops will be offered on Mondays at 7 p.m. The dietitians will discuss ways to improve one’s overall wellbeing, whether it is improving physical well-being or financial well-being with tips to stretch a budget.

Table Talk will be presented on Wednesdays at noon. The interactive discussion will highlight the benefits and importance of incorporating whole grains into a healthy diet. Also, participants will learn ways to add whole grains to their meals.

Family Meals at 5, where attendees will learn how to build easy, quick and balanced meals in under 30 minutes, will be offered every Tuesday at 5 p.m. In March, the dietitians will highlight Giant’s Nature’s Promise line of products.

Easter Dinner on a Dime will be offered on Tuesdays at noon. With the ham as the centerpiece, the dietitians will present ideas on how to help round out the meal with sides that will not break the budget.

Also on tap is a special night of St. Patrick’s Day fun as the dietitians explore festive food and beer pairings on Thursday, March 16, at 7 p.m.

Visit www.giantfood stores.com/wellness or www.martins foods.com/ wellness for recipe ideas and resources. There is also a link to preregister for all virtual classes and a complete listing of ingredients needed for each class. In addition, customers can earn 50 Choice Rewards points when they register, provide their card number and state and attend the entire class.
