Good listening

WhenLeola United Methodist Church member

Mark Campbell and pastor David Ryan learned that the Ten Thousand Villages and Emmaus Road cafes would both be closing, the two music lovers lamented losing the local venues. “I was a big fan of Ten Thousand Villages,” said Ryan, who was a regular at the weekly concerts. “(Mark and I) had the idea we would like to do that here. We were looking for ministry that could do positive things and engage in the community.”

Drawing from Campbell’s local and even international connections to musicians, the duo has organized Music @ Maple And Main, a monthly music series to be held at the church, 7 W. Main St., Leola, on the second Friday of each month, with doors opening at 6 p.m. and music beginning at 7 p.m. The plan is for musicians to play two 45-minute sets. Eight concerts will feature local

musicians and groups. Freewill donations for the musicians will be accepted at those events. Four times a year, Music @ Maple And Main will host touring artists. Tickets, which will be discounted for students, will be necessary to attend. Food items will be available for purchase at a nominal cost at each event.

The series kicked off in February with a soft opening featuring Ukulele Uprising, a group of about 40 that Ryan said is an “outgrowth of Music for Everyone” and of which he is a member. “We had a good turnout,” said Ryan of the nearly 50 people who attended.

On March 10, the church will host

Lanny Millette, donor director with The Potter’s House, remembers that pastor Jaime Santiago of Restart Training Center Ministries (RTCM) contacted him a few years ago about holidng a fundraiser together as a show of unity among recovery ministries in Lancaster County. “It’s bigger than one ministry,” said Millette, who noted that Slow Down Ministries, which helps provide vehicles for graduates of Christ-centered programs like Potter’s House and RTCM, has joined in the effort as well.

Dillweed. “(Dillweed) is a local band that plays old-timey music with a banjo and an upright bass,” said Campbell, who called the group’s performances “fun-loving and joyous.” “They like to be whimsical, upbeat, fun, and contemporary,” he said, adding that the family-friendly band has a local following.

On April 14, tickets will be needed to hear the Mari Black Trio, featuring Celtic, Canadian, and American music by world champion fiddler Mari Black and her acoustic trio. The concert will coincide with an artist-in-residency program the group is taking part in at a local high school.

A question for Christians

In explaining why Eric Metaxas was chosen as the speaker for the Linville Hill Christian School spring banquet, head of school Matt Buckwalter quoted the school’s mission statement. “Linville Hill is a community of faith where students learn to think deeply about who God is as they discover their God-given purpose in preparation for a lifetime of service to the King,” said Buckwalter. Explaining that a few of the author’s many books are utilized in the high school curriculum, Buckwalter added, “(Metaxas’ words) help students think about

looking back to those who’ve gone before us for answers to (the question), ‘How do we live in a time when maybe the prevailing values of the culture are out of sync with the heroes of faith from old?’ We need someone who can help draw our young people back to those voices.”

Metaxas will be the featured speaker at the Linville Hill 2023 spring banquet on Tuesday, March 28, at Beechdale Farms, 458 Beechdale Road, Bird-in-Hand. A meet-and-greet will be held from 5 to 5:45 p.m. Appetizers will be served at 5:15 p.m., and dinner, which will feature pot roast and chicken cordon bleu, will begin at 6 p.m.

On May 12, Mark and Jordan Rast, a father and son team, will play. The pair specializes in Appalachian and bluegrass music with Jordan on lead vocals, fiddle, guitar, and mandolin and Mark on banjo, dobro, and backing vocals. “Mark plays with Colebrook Road,” said Campbell, noting the group has been heard nationally.

Ryan noted that while the emphasis at the events will be on listening to the music, the venue will soon be undergoing a change immediately following the March concert, with updates to flooring, lighting, and paint to create a more comfortable atmosphere.

Ryan noted that the groups will tend to be in the folk, Americana, and bluegrass genres and will be

Metaxas is a New York Times best-selling author, known for his books “If You Can Keep It,” “Bonhoeffer,” and “Amazing Grace,” among others. He has also appeared as a cultural commentator on CNN, Fox News, and MSNBC, and he is the host of “The Eric Metaxas Show,” a daily syndicated radio program.

Buckwalter heard Metaxas speak twice since fall of 2022, and he was impressed.

“Metaxas is a voice that is so important for our church and communities to hear,” said Buckwalter, who noted an effort is underway to provide sponsorship for the banquet to the pastors of the 70 congregations represented by Linville students. Delving into Metaxas’ past, Buckwalter pointed out that the author’s parents were immigrants from Greece and Germany who met in an English class.

“(Metaxas) has a very tangible grip on what America stands for (because) his family came here for that,” said Buckwalter, who called Metaxas a “phenomenal historian.”

Buckwalter also noted that Metaxas’ most recent book, “A Letter to the American Church,” is “a wake-up call for Christians to think about what they are doing with their voices.” “Are they sitting silently or using the liberty this nation provides to speak in accordance with their convictions?” Buckwalter asked.

Passing around postcards

On the third Monday of each month, the Lancaster County Postcard Club meets at the Farm & Home Center, 1383 Arcadia Road, Lancaster. During the meetings, which are open to the public, members gather to discuss postcards on a wide variety of topics. Each meeting features a specific theme and includes a talk from a guest speaker who focuses on that theme.

In January, the club creates a schedule of which themes will be incorporated throughout the year, and the topic of the club’s meetings can be anything from railroads to boats to hometowns. For its meeting in January, the club had members share postcards relating to their favorite holidays. On Feb. 20, the topic of the meeting was cartoons and humor, and attendees participated in a member’s market to buy and sell postcards.

Jere Greider of Mountville has been a member of the postcard club for over 20 years, first becoming interested in them while adding to his collection of Coca-Cola memorabilia. After Greider found a Coca-Cola post-

card, he began to shift his focus to collecting postcards from around Lancaster County.

Greider is now a postcard dealer and participates in several yearly shows where postcard enthusiasts come together to buy and sell items for their collections. During the shows, around 25 postcard dealers present boxes of cards that are organized by topic. A buyer will often look for postcards from specific locations, such as his or her hometown or alma mater.

Before the advent of different technologies in the 19th century, postcards were a way for travelers to remember a location they visited without a camera. Many people also used them to communicate with others who lived nearby before the invention of the telephone, as a way to stay connected with each other. Today, postcards are primarily found in tourist attractions, but many vintage cards still circulate in antique stores and on the internet.

“Postcards cover every topic imaginable,” Greider said. “We have so many antique stores and outlets here in central Pennsylvania where you can find them.” Besides combing through local antiques stores,

Greider often finds items to add to his collection by searching for postcards on websites like eBay. Throughout his many years spent collecting postcards, Greider has learned more about the market and what people are seeking. Currently, he is focused on collecting postcards that originate from the Mountville area and the surrounding towns.

During the March meeting, set for Monday, March 20, at 7 p.m., the Lancaster County Postcard Club will share postcards from various places of worship. For more information, search for “Lancaster County Postcard Club” on Facebook.

Ephrata Cloister to celebrate Charter Day

Historic Ephrata Cloister, 632 W. Main St., Ephrata, and the Pennsylvania Historical & Museum Commission (PHMC) will celebrate the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania’s 342nd birthday on Charter Day, Sunday, March 12, by offering free admission from noon to 4 p.m. This special day marks the granting of the charter for Pennsylvania to William Penn in 1681. In 1732, German immigrant Conrad Beissel established the Ephrata Cloister along the banks of the Cocalico Creek in Lancaster County. This unique religious community epitomized William Penn’s “Holy Experiment” as an example of religious tolerance, creative expression, and intellectual freedom.

The original buildings of Historic Ephrata Cloister hold many objects made and used at the community in the 1700s, and experienced interpreters will help visitors to explore the rich history of Ephrata at their own pace during this program. Visitors are encouraged to start their visit in the Visitor Center with a short video that will help set the stage for their exploration.

Ephrata Cloister is known as the home of the first documented female music composers in North America, and the Ephrata Cloister Chorus will highlight some of these women’s hymns

during performances at 2 and 3 p.m. in the 1743 Meetinghouse. Visitors may also stop by the museum store, which offers a locally made handcrafted items, books, ceramics and more.

Annual art auction to return to in-person event

The Friendship Heart Gallery & Studio will present its 20th annual art benefit auction on Thursday, March 23, at Grace Church, 501 W. Lincoln Ave., Lititz. The event has been held virtually since 2020 due to the COVID-19 pandemic but is returning to an in-person format.

The community is invited to celebrate the talents of the Friendship Heart artists as they showcase unique creativity through various mediums of art. The event will consist of light hors d’oeuvres, a silent auction and a special program featuring the Heart artists. This year’s theme was inspired by a collaborative piece of art, which

will be featured in the silent auction, titled “Together, Hand in Hand.”

A Paint Brush Pull will be featured once again. Attendees can purchase a numbered paintbrush or a bundle of six for an additional cost, which will enter them into a drawing for a Friendship Heart Gallery prize pack. Included in the basket are a number of Primitives by Kathy Collaborative Collection pieces, handmade cards, jewelry and a gift certificate for a framed original painting from the gallery. The winning paintbrush will be announced at the end of the program.

In addition, two “Fund-ANeed” opportunities will be

available that will go into making the Lancaster City Studio space better equipped for its needs. The first FundA-Need item consists of large canvases so that the Heart artists have opportunities to express their creativity on a larger platform independently or collaboratively. The second Fund-A-Need opportunity will help to purchase a high-quality projector and screen, which will be used as an instructional tool and art-making tool in the studio. For more details on the Fund-A-Need items, to register for a bidder number and to purchase tickets for the in-person event, visit www.FriendshipArt.net/Bid.

The ticket price includes

refreshments and a special program featuring the Heart artists. Those who are unable to attend the in-person event can still register to bid during the online silent auction. By providing both a phone number and an email address, auction participants will be notified when they are outbid. By providing payment information up front, auction participants will have a faster and smoother checkout process at the end of the night. Those who are attending in person must register separately for a bidder number.

Friendship Heart Studio is a day program that celebrates personalities and talent through free expression and collaboration. More than 50 artists work with professionals and volunteers to create masterpieces while developing a sense of purpose, value and freedom. The studio realizes its vision of “Expressing Capabilities” by promoting artistic skills and self-expression through various techniques while utilizing both traditional and unconventional media.

Friendship Community, a faith-based nonprofit organization, has been supporting individuals with intellectual disabilities and autism since 1972. It offers two arts day programs, a home-based service program and 24 residential homes within Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

For more details about the auction, contact Calista White at 717-656-2466, ext. 1155, or cwhite@friendshipcommu nity.net. Readers may also follow the organization on Facebook, Instagram and TikTok.

Tuesday & Wednesday, April 4-5

The Lanco Recovery Benefit Auction, which will include live music, food vendors, and a candy drop, will be held at 320 N. Ronks Road, Bird-inHand, on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 4 and 5. Festivities will kick off at 5 p.m. on Aug 4 and at 9 a.m. on Aug. 5.

Currently, organizers are looking for sponsors to help cover the costs of bands, food, marketing, and more, and for businesses and individuals to donate new items to be auctioned. Among the new items Frank Gaston of Slow Down Ministries has gathered to go up for bids are motorcycle parts and accessories, parts for off-road trucks, and a bicycle. “We would accept gift cards, vacations, or a dinner for six in a home,” said Millette.

To provide entertainment between live auction sets, Santiago has lined up family Gospel folk groups from Ohio that he said are wellknown in the Lancaster area. On Friday, groups include Dan and Amanda Esh, the Brandenberger Family, and Matt & Nimmie. The Brandenberger Family will play again on Saturday, along with Conrad Fisher, Broadway, and Endless Hallelujah Band. A candy drop is

planned for late Saturday morning or early afternoon.

“One of our purposes is to let people know this is a unified effort of several minnistries wanting to help each other,” said Millette. “Right now, we are hoping individuals and businesses will stand with us as sponsors.” He added, “(We are looking for) people who find joy in helping those who can’t help themselves.” The Potter’s House provides a safe place for men and women to recover from addiction, experience Christ-centered discipleship, and embrace their God-given destiny. RTCM has a mission to change the lives of men with addictions by introducing them to Jesus and helping them process past trauma to deal with problems in a healthy way and become positive members of society. “We are there to give people a leg up with a desire that they become contributing members of the community,” said Millette. “We all benefit from that.”

Readers who are interested in sponsorships or making donations to the auction may call Gaston at 717-723-7253, Santiago at 717-304-3341, or Millette at 717-919-0316.
