Quilting for dollars
BY ANN MEAD ASH
Inthe cold of February, the women who live in the area surrounding Fairmount in Ephrata gather at the retirement community to create quilts. On Feb. 11, 14, and 15, a total of 192 quilters joined forces to work on 14 framed quilts. Over the three-day period, 11 quilts were completed and three were partly completed before being sent home with some of the quilters for finishing. The quilts will be sold at auction in the fall to benefit Fairmount residents in need.
Many of the quilts were queen size, and Carol Swailes, Fairmount public relations coordinator and a quilter herself, noted that size is the most common. “There was a great representation of several popular patterns,” said Swailes, who mentioned Trip Around the World, Bargello, Log Cabin, and Kaleidoscope. “(There was) one unnamed quilt in reds and blues that has flying geese, four-patch, and stars included,” she reported. “(There
were also) several quilts with embroidered and cross-stitched patches.” Many of the quilts featured embroidered patterns of flowers and birds. A hunting-themed quilt sported a photo of a family of bears on a background of woodland colors, including greens, browns, and light blues. One cream-colored quilt
was decorated with appliqued hearts, flowers, and leaves in deep greens and reds. Colors ranged from bright reds and pinks to rich cranberries and navy to subdued pastels. Quilting Days attracts many Fairmount residents and local families. Swailes noted that groups of sisters were gathered at several of the

When Linda Binder was growing up in Bowmansville, she learned to play the piano and the organ, and around the age of 11, she learned to sew in 4-H. Her musical talents led Linda to become the organist at Trinity Lutheran Church in New Holland for more than 40 years. The latter talent also led briefly to a job in a sewing factory, which inspired Linda to go to cosmetology school and open Studio 1 Hair and Skin Care Center in New Holland, a shop she ran for more than 30 years.

tables. The goal of Quilting Days is to create quilts to be sold at auction during Fairmount’s annual chicken barbecue in the fall. During 2020, Fairmount streamlined its Sharing Fund benefit by holding chicken barbecue sales off-site and moving the annual auction online. In 2021, many of the activities associated with the
event returned, but the fundraiser was held at New Covenant Mennonite Fellowship. In 2022, the auction remained at that location, and Swailes said that organizers were pleased with the move. “The new location is working out great,” she said. “There is plenty of room and easy access from Fairmount.”

Veronica Jimenez, lay counselor, volunteer prison chaplain, and author of the Sound Mind Awareness curriculum, is known for the classes she teaches at churches and recovery houses and for her counseling ministry. Jimenez’s journey to this place, however, has been hard-won and filled with twist and turns.
Originally from the Bushwick neighborhood of Brooklyn in New York City, Jimenez suffered abuse from an early age. “I learned shame and rage very early,” Jimenez recalled, noting her situation created the “perfect storm for mental
illness.” “I wasn’t a healthy kid,” she said. “My heart, soul, mind, and spirit were all affected.” When Jimenez was a teenager, her anger became such an issue, she was sent to live in a girls’ home for a year. “That’s where I developed a heart for the incarcerated,” she said.
Around age 11, Jimenez remembers attending a Metro World Child Sunday school run by pastor Bill Wilson. “That’s where I first heard that God has a son named Jesus who loves children,” said Jimenez, who noted that at that time the grace of God first touched her life. “I still lived in a bad environment, but I learned to pray,” she said.

When Jimenez met her husband, her life changed. She had been told she could not have children, but she prayed for a miracle because she saw how her husband loved children. “That was the first miracle I ever prayed for and received,” said Jimenez, who eventually had five children.
In 2010, Jimenez and her family moved to Lancaster with the goal of making a fresh start, but Jimenez experienced flashbacks, nightmares, and migraines. Marital problems appeared. Jimenez prayed for God to bring her a friend she could confide in. “God sent Brenda Green of Freedom Prayer Ministries and In the Light Ministries of Lancaster,” said Jimenez. Green worked in conjunction with a Christian doctor, and

Jimenez responded positively to the treatment. “That combination … was so effective, I was healed in 2012,” Jimenez stated.
Green recognized Jimenez’s gift for teaching. Jimenez began to teach classes, eventually developing Sound Mind Awareness - based on the principles of repentance, renewal, reconnection, and retraining. In 2017, she began volunteering as a prison chaplain and branching into offering counseling by donation. She now teaches classes at ACTS Covenant Fellowship, 1927 Wheatland Ave., Lancaster. Her first online class will begin Wednesday, March 1. For information about Jimenez’s classes, readers may search for “Sound Mind Awareness” on Facebook or visit www.soundmindawareness.com.

In 2017, Linda closed her shop and took an extended motor home trip with her husband, Tom. When she returned to her home in Ephrata, she was interested in exploring a new challenge. Linda was looking for a simple cotton skirt, and she could not find what she wanted. Although she had not touched a sewing machine in 30 years, she decided to make the skirt. She purchased a new Swissengineered sewing machine she nicknamed Nina. “I started with clothing because that’s what I knew,” recalled Linda.
When a neighbor girl wanted a doll, Linda made her one based on a pattern, but then she decided to get a little creative. Linda changed up the design, adding “long, funky” legs. Eventually, she added joints to the legs so the colorful creatures could sit up and hang from shelves. She called them Whimzes, and the dolls were the impetus for a new business, which now includes divided cloth baskets, microwave bowl holders, reversible placemats, aprons, a line of tote bags, zip-top pouches, wallets, pillows with matching throws, ponchos, and soft hassock-like items called poofs. “The throws are made of the softest, heaviest fleece available,” said Linda.
Choosing colorful fabrics in a variety of textures is one of the delights in making different items, according to Linda. “That’s part of the fun of it,” she said, adding, “Everything I do is unique.” Linda sells her creations in a few locations, including Lorah’s Handmade
Chocolates in Brickerville, the Artful Nest in Marietta, and Junk to Jazz in Reading, as well as at craft fairs. She has also created a Facebook page that can be found by searching for “WhimzeGal.”
Linda has now made hundreds of Whimzes, along with all the other
one-of-a-kind items she makes in her home workshop. On her Facebook page, she shows some of her new items and tells the stories of how she came to create them. She gives credit to Tom for his love and help. “It’s because of support from him that I can do this,” she said.

CV wrestlers claim eight medals in sectionals
BY ERIC PYLES
They may not be on the same level as the annual NCAA Men’s Basketball bracket but in central Pennsylvania you will be hard pressed to find a more sought-after bracket than the ones released for the District 3 boy’s wrestling championships.
The championship march started on February 18th with mid-state grapplers scattered throughout the region for the sectional portion of the District 3 Championship. For Conestoga Valley that meant a trip Northeast to Shillington where Governor Mifflin was playing host to 14 other schools. CV sent 13 wrestlers, one in each weight class, and returned with eight medals, good enough to tie Exeter for fourth place in the final team standings.
Omar Vargas and Luke Needham collected the top CV finishes, each going 2-1 after their respective first round
byes. Vargas did his work in the 114-pound bracket, topping Aden Reiter (Governor Mifflin) and Isaac Eidle (Wilson) before falling to Exeter’s Richard Orfield in the final.
Needham snagged a silver medal for his second place run at 160, losing only in the finals to Governor Mifflin’s Samuel Moyer. The junior managed pinfall wins over Romeo Grullon (Muhlenberg) and Scott Winter (Ephrata) that lasted a combined 71-seconds.
Two other CV wrestlers kept their season alive and will join Needham and Vargas at the district championship. Luke
Morley was the first, rebounding from a 127-pound semifinal loss to ELCO’s Steven Rosado, with wins over Timothy Porter (Cocalico) and Hunter Goff (Twin Valley) to earn his bronze. Morley opened his sectional action by topping Wilson’s Miguel Herrera.
Abdoul Akala also worked his
way to a bronze medal after bowing out of the 172-pound championship bracket with a semifinal loss to Wilson’s Blaise Eidle. The medal earning victories came over Jackson Schools (Governor Mifflin) and Khyre Inman (Daniel Boone) with a quarterfinal victory over ELCO’s Isaiah Angley kicking things off for Akala.
Tal Stoltzfus, Miles Acosta and Teagan Ruble finished the tournament with a win and reached the medal stand but missed the top four finish needed to keep their season alive. Ruble collected his fifth place finish at 139-pounds, opening and closing his sectional round with a win over Cocalico’s Jalen Frederick. In between were losses to Ephrata’s Tanner McCracken and ELCO’s Landen Brubaker.
Stoltzfus went 4-2 over his six matches in the 215-pound bracket, capturing his fifth place medal courtesy of a 5-1 win over Governor Mifflin’s Ethan Hoffman. The sophomore added wins over Peter Brady (Cocalico), Logan Wegman (Exeter) and Jamie Harris (Daniel Boone) to counter the losses to Garden Spot’s Tyler Hurst and ELCO’s Kyle Miller.
Acosta did his work at 145 where he saw his championship hopes dashed via a quarterfinal loss to Ephrata’s Brody Musser. Acosta picked up his second loss in the consolation semifinal where he fell to Wilson’s Matteo Garcia. Acosta bounced back to top Octorara’s Ian
OR
Teufert and collected the fifthplace medal that came with the win. Acosta added wins over Muhlenberg’s Vincenzo Cardell and Governor Mifflin’s Reese Hohl for his 3-2 day.
Conestoga Valley had one last grappler make the podium with Camden Zoll earning sixth place at 285. Zoll opened and closed his tournament with a loss to Daniel Boone’s Jordan Myer, the last handing Zoll that sixth place medal. His lone win came over Joshua Lis of Exeter with Governor Mifflin’s Hunter Unger handing out Zoll’s final loss.
The remaining five Buckskins found the trip to Governor Mifflin less season ending. Nick Horton’s lone win at 107 came over Governor Mifflin’s Jayleah Pletz. Townsen Bagley picked up his 121-pound win over Reading’s Nathaniel Weiss while Bryce Bowman kicked off his 133-pound journey with a win over Reading’s Brandon Otero. Andrew Stoltzfoos stumbled at 152, dropping two straight matches to close out his season while Melvin Stoltzfoos (189) was the final ‘Buck to wrestle in the sectional round with his lone win coming over Twin Valley’s Mark Minardi.
BOWLING
The bowling team kicked off the individual portion of the postseason on February 16th and 17th with the LancasterLebanon League Singles Championships. Eight Buckskins took part in the tournament with only Jocelyn Ross repre-

senting the Lady Buckskins. She finished the six-round qualifying stage in eighth place, her 1085 tally dropping her into the stepladder finals opposite Penn Manor’s Lacey Slaymaker. Ross dropped that head-to-head with Slaymaker, 202-156, slotting Ross ninth in the final standings.
For the boys both Daniel Subers and Ryan Muckle made the stepladder finals but combined for just one win once there. That win belonged to Subers who topped Cedar Crest’s Toby Zombro 192-157 before falling to Elizabethtown’s Zach Wentzel, slotting him sixth in the final standings.
Muckle held his ninth-place quali-
fying spot after dropping his opening match in the finals to Elizabethtown’s Mason Moore.
Josiah Casler (25th), Jason DeChristopher (35th), Evan Zimmerman (36th), Mason Tardibuono (38th) and Ethan Tardibuono (42nd) completed the Conestoga Valley contingent.

McIlvaine to exhibit art at Landis Homes
“Lancaster County: An Art Exhibit,” featuring pieces by local artist Joanne McIlvaine, will be on display at the Landis Homes Crossings Art Gallery through April. The exhibit is on display in the Crossings Gallery, located in the Calvin G. and Janet C. High Learning and Wellness Center on the campus of Landis Homes, 1001 E. Oregon Road, Lititz. The gallery is open from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.
McIlvaine is a graduate of Lancaster Mennonite High School and received a fine art degree from Goshen College in the 1980s. She did not start oil painting seriously until 2009, when she took a plein air painting class at Pennsylvania College of Art & Design and learned how to paint outdoors on location.
“I’ve been painting outdoors with oil paints for over 12 years. Growing up on a farm in Lancaster County, I’ve always found inspiration in natural beauty,” McIlvaine said. “My goal with each painting is to express beauty: to instill a sense of wonder, to marvel at the variety in
nature, and to share a mood or feeling that the place inspired. I’m trying to capture the soul of the place on my canvas.”
Proceeds from the art gallery support the Landis Homes Caring Fund. For more information, contact Deb Laws-Landis at 717-3813583 or dlawslandis @landis.org.
