HMS Prepares To Present “Twain’s Tales”

The writings of Mark Twain are undeniably an American treasure, and Becky Degan, director of the Hinkletown Mennonite School (HMS) spring play, wants to share that treasure with audiences. “People know (the characters) Tom Sawyer and Huck Finn, but (Twain) wrote so much more,” said Degan. “I would like audiences to take home an appreciation for Mark Twain’s humor and these (students’) abilities to tell these stories with the humor he intended.”

Degan will have the opportunity to share Twain with audiences when HMS presents “Twain’s Tales” at the school, 272 Wanner Road, Ephrata, on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2.

The March 1 performance will be a dinner theater presentation, which will begin at 5:30 p.m. Performances on March 2 will be held at 2 and 7 p.m.

The play will include five of Twain’s works - four short stories and one scene from the book “The Adventures of Tom Sawyer,” See “Twain’s Tales” pg 7

The leaders of Dayspring Christian Academy have tapped two individuals to give addresses during the ninth annual Remember America Speaker Series event, which is themed “Which Way, America? Choose You This Day” and will be held on Saturday, April 27. Fox News personality Shannon Bream and retiring U.S. Rep. Trey Gowdy will visit Lancaster and speak to the audience at the Lancaster County Convention Center, 25 S. Queen St., Lancaster.

One of the reasons Mental Health America (MHA) marketing coordinator Charlotte Leckow works so hard gathering items for the live and silent auctions held during the organization’s annual pasta buffet is that the fundraiser helps support the work of Gretchen Gaudioso, client and family advocate with MHA, in area schools.

According to Kate Lab, who oversees development for The Factory Ministries, the organization’s spring banquet will be about members of the community who have interacted with The Factory. “We will hear from participants and teens who have been directly impacted by The

Kylie Stoltzfus, who handles marketing and promotions for The Factory, said that the program will include a video and that organizers hope to have students who frequent the youth center present a program.

The Factory has its roots in the early 1990s, when two area churches surveyed the community about area needs. In response, a former sewing factory in Paradise was converted into The Factory Youth Center. In 2006, The Factory expanded to include social services for adults. As the organization continued to grow, the name was changed to The Factory Ministries. The Factory Ministries now offers a youth center, food pantry, and social services, and the organization has become a hub for connecting needs and resources in the Pequea Valley area.

According to Kristin Labezius, assistant program director and intensive case manager with Community Services Group of MHA, volunteers of all ages will gather at the church on the evening of March 7 when the cooking begins. Gaudioso noted that 10 large chafing dishes of lasagna are prepared to feed about 300 guests, and Leckow added that nearly 40 volunteers coming from all professions will join in the effort.

The evening’s silent auction will include at least 100 items, including sports memorabilia, pottery, admissions to Rock Ford Plantation, tours and tastings, tickets to a summer concert series held in a vineyard, donations by local artists and craftspeople, and gift certificates for area eateries. “We have cleaning services, dental whitening treatments, (and) Hershey camping tickets, and we have participants who donate artwork as well,” said Leckow.

Up to 40 donations will be included in the live auction.

Weekend getaways; a hot air balloon ride; a limo ride anywhere in Lancaster County for a prom or wedding; lunches with local celebrities, such as a legislator; and jewelry will all be auctioned by Tim Keller.

Themed baskets that will go up for bids may include a chocolate-lovers basket, a cookie making basket, a bird feeder basket, a bath and body basket, and a treasure chest basket.

MHA of Lancaster provides a variety of services, including support groups, community support programs, advocacy services, and peer education.

Compeer Lancaster, a program of MHA, matches adults in the community in recovery from mental illness with a volunteer friend. The Lancaster County Suicide Prevention Coalition, also an MHA program, brings together community partners with individuals dedicated to reducing suicide rates. Other offerings include mental health screenings, a wellness program, and education services.

Kim McDevitt, executive director of MHA Lancaster, said that she is looking forward to the buffet because it brings a fun element to the work of the organization. “I love that this is a casual, fun event where all come together to support mental health and wellness in the community,” she stated. The organization hopes to raise $30,000 during the evening.

Tickets to the event are discounted for children ages 6 to 10, and children age 5 and under will be admitted for free. Tickets may be purchased at www.mhalancaster.org or at the door on the evening of the event.

Piercing Word has announced that registration is open for its 2019 Summer Theater Camp for youths ages 10 to 18. Camp will be held from Monday through Saturday, July 8 to 13, from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. at Calvary Chuch, 1051 Landis Valley Road, Lancaster. A performance for family and friends will be held on July 13 at 3 p.m.

At 4:30 p.m., Dr. Zara Anishanslin, art history professor at the University of Delaware, will highlight the lives of four people: a London weaver, one of England’s few female silk designers, a Philadelphia merchant’s wife, and a New England painter. The presentation will explore how each of them interacted with a

Every Friday in February, the fourth-grade entrepreneurs have offered a variety of cupcakes, macaroons, crisped rice treats, cookies and more at their bake stand. According to fourth-grade teacher Anette Raiser, the students made posters, handled and counted money, and conducted setup and cleanup. Inspired by the commitment of the fourthgraders, an anonymous donor pledged to match the funds raised through the bake sale.

Along with the students, community members are helping to raise funds. HMS parents Mary and Nevin Bowman are making and selling egg rolls to contribute toward the challenge goal, and other families are preparing their families’ specialties to add their efforts. A GoFundMe page has been set up to connect with alumni who have fond memories of many activities in the gym. HMS parents Ryan and Jennifer Zimmerman organized a benefit cornhole tournament, which was scheduled to take place on Feb. 23.

HMS’ gym was built 34 years

ago, and the floor tiles are ready for replacement rather than just repair. HMS plans to install an up-to-date, sports-grade floor that can handle the more than 50,000 feet that cross the gym floor each year. In order to schedule the floor replacement for this summer, HMS parents, board of trustees members, faculty members, and staff members must raise $105,000 by Tuesday, March 5.

In addition to interscholastic sports, the gymnasium is used for back-to-school nights, chapel services, music and drama programs, graduation, alumni gatherings, and the annual HMS HinkleFEST and Auction. Many HMS neighbors and friends use the HMS gym for volleyball or basketball nights, family reunions, and other activities.

They will include those selling archery equipment suitable for hunting, deer feed suppliers, taxidermists, fishing and waterfowl guides, and those selling other outdoor gear and supplies.

According to Fisher, the expo is the brainchild of church members Harold Bare and Wil Esbenshade. “(Bare and Esbenshade) have a desire to see the Gospel shared with everyone in our community,” explained Fisher, who added that the pair discussed areas where that they felt there was common ground between the church and the community. “The outdoors is one of those places,” said Fisher. “They personally have a love of the outdoors and a love of hunting and fishing, and that resonates with a lot of people they come into contact with in the community.”

Fisher and Lauren Smoker, communications coordinator for the church, emphasized the inclusivity of the event. “This is not (strictly) a men’s event,” said Fisher.

“This is for the whole family,” added Smoker. Smoker also noted that the Holders are passionate about living out their faith in the outdoors as a family.

Other tales will include “The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County,” “Is He Living or Is He Dead?” and “The Joke That Made Ed’s Fortune.” The fourth tale, “The Belated Russian Passport,” will give actors the opportunity to interact with the audience.

“The young traveler … keeps asking the audience, ‘What do I do now?’” explained Degan of the story, which takes a young man accidentally into Russia.

To connect the five tales together, the action is introduced by five storytellers who have gathered on a general store porch in Hannibal, Miss.

Degan has been working with the narrators to help them develop a stage camaraderie.

Madison Stauffer, who will play storyteller Tess Brady, noted that some of the ways of speaking used in the play are unusual. “ We have to do a Southern accent,” she explained. “Instead of ‘get,’ we say ‘git.’”

Because several students play a number of different roles, Degan has been helping students learn how to transform from one persona to another. “Working with them to understand (how to play) more than one character (has been a process),” said Degan.

Degan, who teaches at HMS, said that she has enjoyed journeying with the students as they delve deeper into Twain’s works with the goal of sharing them with audiences. “One of my favorite parts is helping them understand the stories,” said Degan. “Mark Twain wrote a lot about human nature, and a lot of (his writing) is tonguein-cheek and satire.” Degan noted that as the students read the material multiple times they come to better perceive the humor. “They start to … find the stories entertaining and amusing.”

Hamilton and Ropp, who are friends in real life, are enjoying the chance to argue with each other as their onstage characters.

As opening night approaches, the students’ thoughts are turning to what the show will bring to audiences. Isabelle Stauffer, who plays storyteller Flo Warren, said that she hopes the audiences will laugh at the humorous material. “I hope they will get a smile,” added Madison.

Veritas Academy will sponsor a lecture oriented toward parents of children in kindergarten through 12th grade on Thursday, March 7, from 7 to 8:30 p.m. at Wheatland Presbyterian Church, 1125 Columbia Ave., Lancaster. Dr. Andrew Mitchell will present the lecture, titled “Hungry Souls in a Self-Affirming Culture: Rediscovering the Beauty of Food and Feasting.”

Parents, teachers, and community members are invited to attend.

Mitchell will address a hunger that needs to be satisfied, different than stomachs seeking to be filled or personalities seeking affirmation. He will encourage those in attendance to reclaim mealtimes as more than the intersection of food and beverages, but rather as the convergence of history, poetry, and theology.

Mitchell earned his bachelor’s degree from Hillsdale College and his master’s and doctorate degrees from The Ohio State University. He is an associate professor of history at Grove City College.

Applications Sought For Awards “Sleeping Beauty” Marionette Shows Set The Junior League of Lancaster (JLL) is accepting applications for the 2019 Deborah P. Altman Outstanding Youth Volunteer Awards. The award, named for a past JLL president, recognizes young people who demonstrate an exceptional interest and involvement in volunteerism as well as inspiring their peers to volunteer in their communities.

be selected to receive the award, each receiving a set prize.

Weather might have delayed the start of the girls’ individual tournament on February 13 at Clearview Lanes in Elizabethtown, but that didn’t dampen the Lady Bucks enthusiasm as they awaited their full-day tournament.

Fellow senior Abbey Bowman reiterated MacFeat’s sentiments adding, “I’m really going to miss this.” Bowman went on to place 36th in the event.

Sophomores Eleana Hintz and Witton were quick to chime in about the team’s “family-like” atmosphere and the highlights of getting to know each team member better throughout the season.

Demonstrating their improvement on the lanes, the team came up with a game win over Manheim Central in their last match of the regular season, and their attitude of support and team emphasis was evident as they reminisced together about the memories of the season.

Though a winning record eluded the club, they certainly demonstrated their victories in other areas of growth-taking away priceless memories while learning lessons of teamwork and tenacity.

WRESTLING After a phenomenal regular season in which they swept their league opponents with a perfect 70 record, the Buckskin matmen headed into District III post-season

playoffs with more to prove, and they did it as a team, with all grapplers placing in the top six of their respective weights and earning the team the title of District III 3A Section I champions.

“It was a complete team effort as we had every wrestler place in the top six which is the statistic that I am most proud of with this team,” commented head coach Trent Turner.

Taking part in the PIAA District III 3A tournament comprised of 15 teams held at Governor Mifflin, the Buckskins managed to earn a team total of 190.5 points to claim the title for the first time in school history. Despite no individual grappler winning their weight class, the overall consistency of the Buckskin matmen pulled in the points and reflected the depth of the squad.

Josh MacNamara at 160 earned second place honors to pace the Bucks. MacNamara’s trip to the first-place bout included a takedown of Cedar Crest’s Dylan Styver and a 7-4 decision over Anthony Steinmeyer of Wilson. MacNamara succumbed to a 7-3 decision on the mat when he faced Johnny Arentz of Governor Mifflin.

Cameron Kistler (126) picked up a fall while working his way to a thirdplace finish, and Taylor Sheaffer (152) achieved a 10-8 decision over Drew Finkey of Garden Spot for CV’s other third place finish. Austin Rider (138) and Rafael Rodriguez (120) both earned fourth.

MacNamara, Kistler, Sheaffer, Rider and Rodriguez have all earned themselves a spot to compete in the District III 3A championship to be held in Hershey.

Five CV wrestlers finished in fifth; Conrad Dillman (170), David Dariychuk (145), Isiah Gantt (182), Leo Marente (220), and Trenton Ruble (108); and three more pulled in at sixth, with Eddie Lopez (195), Keaton Fischer (113), and Yodhe Desta (285).

Though the fifth and sixth place finishes will not advance to the championships in Hershey, their contribution was vital to the overall team success.

“Having so many guys still providing team points in the fifth/sixth place bouts was vital to our overall success,” credited Turner. “They were still working hard to provide additional points for the team.”

The Lancaster County nonprofit Parkinson’s Circle of Care Alliance has welcomed Drew Nesbitt as a new board member. He will join the organization in its vision to improve the lives of those with Parkinson’s disease and their caretakers.

Nesbitt is a physical therapist and clinic director at Hartz Physical Therapy, Lancaster - East. He has been with the company since 2010, and he has an interest in neurological and vestibular issues. He believes in a partnering approach between movement specialist/neurologist, physical therapist and client/caregiver.

Nesbitt is a graduate of Hempfield High School. He received his Bachelor of Science in biology

from East Stroudsburg University and a Doctor of Physical Therapy from Arcadia University. At East Stroudsburg, he was captain of the cross-country and track and field teams. He continues to run competitively and is a member of the F&M Track Club. He has successfully completed the Boston Marathon. Nesbitt has served on the board of Girls on the Run and continues his work on the Girls on the Run 5K race committee. Drew and his wife, Amanda, live in Lancaster with their two young children.

LCOB has also formed a Youth Praise Team program. The program is free and open to all young musicians approximately ages 11 to 17, including those who do not attend church. Rehearsals take place each Thursday from 7 to 8:30 p.m. The group is in particular need of a guitarist and a keyboardist, but players of hand percussion and other instruments are welcome, as well. Participants will learn how to play in an ensemble, and they will present quarterly recitals as well as music for special occasions. Among these occasions will be Youth Sunday on May 5, when youths will participate in the church’s worship service.

Additionally, the church will host a Keith Green tribute concert on Friday, May 3, at 7 p.m. The purpose of the concert is to assist the Maranatha (Latino and Latina) congregants with fundraising for an upcoming mission trip to the Dominican Republic, where participants will help construct a kitchen for local schoolchildren. Green was an early contemporary Christian singer-songwriter.

Mennonite Central Committee (MCC) will hold a quilt preview from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Feb. 28, and Friday, March 1, as well as from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, March 2, at MCC East Coast’s Material Resources Center, 517 W. Trout Run Road, Ephrata.

Admission is free. The preview will offer an opportunity to view the quilts slated for auction at the 63rd annual Pennsylvania Relief Sale. Thousands of hours have gone into creating the more than 100 quilts.

Unique to the preview this year will be quilts and wall hangings made from submissions to the Charity Block Design Challenge through The Old Country Store in Intercourse and Jaftex Corporation, a fabric manufacturer in New York City.

The Old Country Store won a Jaftex Facebook contest through the company’s CEO, Scott Fortunoff, and chose MCC and the Pennsylvania Relief Sale as the charity recipient. The store decided to hold an event, with Fortunoff as the main speaker, and paired it with the Charity Block Design Challenge, where registered participants received a mystery pair of fat-quarter fabrics

Winning blocks were sewn into individual wall hangings while many of the other submissions were made into sampler quilts. More than 150 blocks were submitted for the challenge.

During the preview, quilt viewers will be invited to vote for their favorite quilt by donating money.

Each cent counts as one vote and goes toward the Pennsylvania Relief Sale’s My Coins Count collection. This year’s collection will support MCC’s peacebuilding initiatives, which aim to give people the skills they need to work for peace and understanding, to speak out against injustices, and to build resilience through trauma healing.

Church To Present Bible Story Musical The next event in St. Peter’s Lutheran Church’s Musical Arts Concert Series will be a musical presented by the members of the church. The performance will take place on Sunday, March 3, at 3 p.m. in the church sanctuary, with a reception to follow in the narthex. The church is located at 10 Delp Road, Lancaster.

This year, the families of St. Peter’s will present the story of Noah and the flood in “Noah’s RemARKable Voyage,” featuring words and music by John Folkening. The cast has been learning music and dialogue, choreographing dances, and rehearsing the production over the last couple of months.

St. Peter’s production includes

original set pieces created by members of the St. Peter’s community and features the children and youths of the congregation. This year’s show also includes a chance for the audience to participate.

This performance is free and open to the public. A freewill offering will be received during intermission. Ten percent of the freewill offering will go to Music for Everyone, a nonprofit that raises awareness and resources to strengthen music education in local schools.
