Movie actors Tom Cruise, Meryl Streep and Denzel Washington are Hollywood box office heavyweights. But if you want to view real stars on a really big screen, head to the North Museum’s planetarium. “It’s really nice to see when people get really excited for it,” said Cole Penkunas, who’s been the North Museum’s resident astronomer for two years. “It gets me really excited when people ask questions. It shows me they’re interested in science and astronomy. They’re excited about something I’m excited about.” Simply put, the planetarium is one of the most popular attractions at a place - the North Museum of Nature and Science, located at 400 College Ave., Lancaster - that has so many interesting exhibits to experience. Admission to the planetarium, which offers shows mainly on Saturdays and Sundays at 11 a.m. and 2 p.m., is included with admission to the North Museum. “For me, there’s definitely a coolness factor to it,” said Penkunas. “I think some of it is because we want to know where we exist in the universe. Astronomy can tell us a lot about physics, about the Earth and the nature of reality on a really big scale. I think astronomy just being the study of the stars is just very appealing to a lot of people. A lot of people want to explore the world. Earth has

But much work remains in the new recreation department’s mission to get the word out and provide activities that appeal to a majority of East Lampeter Township residents. “I always feel like we can be doing more and reaching more people,” said Lisa Cleveland, who as recreation director makes up East Lampeter Township’s one-person

The department has provided community events like movie nights, a fall festival and an Easter egg hunt; youth events like

This spring, the department introduced a community gardens program that allows individuals and families to rent plots of land at Community Park for growing vegetables, plants and flowers. Twelve of the 16 available plots are currently being utilized. The recreation department has also placed a strong emphasis on promoting and utilizing township facilities like Community Park, Flory Park, Lafayette-Tower Park and Gibbons Park at Nolt’s Mill, as well as fostering relationships with

LCWG Is Made Up of a Bunch of Do-Gooders BY JEFF FALK
Good is universal, timeless and objective. Because it mirrors God, good is good. The Lancaster County Women for Good (LCWG) group knows some things about the concept of doing good. It’s part of the all-volunteer organization’s mission, purpose and reason for existing. “We use that word a lot, ‘good,’” said Anna Horst, the chairperson of the five-member board that

I think there are a number of nonprofits in Lancaster County who have amazing missions. They’re real people trying to help real people. They are problems that a majority of us would agree need to be solved. Maybe we need to be more clear by what we mean by ‘good.’” LCWG, which does not operate from a physical office or building, conducts more than 15 member-

Music can soothe. Music can inspire. Universal, music knows no limits, knows no boundaries, knows no borders. More than bringing them together, music connects people. Music makes us human. “Music is very important because it brings people together,” said Matt Samly, who’s been the director of the Lititz Community Band for four years. “We listen to it in our cars. Out of anything in this world, it’s music that has that common element. Look at audiences at concerts; it’s just anybody. It’s always something for people to look forward to. It puts a smile on their faces. Culture changes, but music doesn’t.” The Lititz Community Band promotes all kinds of music, explores music and makes live music available to the masses. Made up of members from Lititz and surrounding areas, the band has the purpose of both representing the community and serving it. “We support the community,” said Samly. “Everybody likes some kind of music, and we try to play a wide variety of music. It’s a catharsis for the community. People relate to our kind of music, and we support community events. We’re the community’s band, and we’re proud of it.” In season, the Lititz Community Band rehearses at its home base, Lititz Moravian Church, 8 Church Square, Lititz. From the middle of April to late May, the band practices once a week in preparation for its season, which begins with
an appearance in the Lititz Memorial Day parade and ends in the beginning of September. “It’s a seasonal band. It’s a summer band,” said Samly, a clarinet-playing resident of Manheim Township. “We’re happy to go anywhere in the community, and we’re always looking for good venues to play. We do have a band that is willing to be part of the community. People come out and enjoy the band. There’s something for the participants, and there’s something for the community. It’s a family activity. We have musicians who are family or families who are playing together.” Typically, the Lititz Community Band presents about 10 one-hour concerts every season. The community band plays at the Fourth of July celebration at Lititz Springs Park, A Taste of Lititz, Venture Lititz’s Farmers Market, other special events, retirement homes and the Lititz Public Library. The musicians of the Lititz Community Band are volunteers, and most of their performances are free to attend. “I think it’s a passion,” said Samly. “You take years of lessons growing up, and you want to keep those skills. We get so caught up in our everyday lives; it’s hectic and stressed. But this is an outlet. I think people look for that outlet. People have to love it to do it, or they wouldn’t do it. They’re people who thoroughly enjoy what they do. There’s no feeling like it.” About 65 serious musicians make up the Lititz Community Band, residents See Band pg 9

Giant Sponsors Feeding School Kids Initiative T he Giant Company, known locally as Giant and Martin’s, has announced the return of its annual Feeding School Kids initiative. Marking its sixth year, customers at Giant, Martin’s and Giant Heirloom Market stores are invited to round up their purchases to the nearest dollar or convert their CHOICE points into a donation for their local public school districts’ food programs now through Tuesday, March 31. To launch the program, the Giant Company will donate $100,000. Through Feeding School Kids, public school districts have been able to support meal programs and address food insecurity from supplying backpacks with weekend food to clearing outstanding student lunch debt to building on-campus food pantries and establishing garden programs. In 2025, for example, the Frederick County School District in Maryland put funds toward food costs for its Bright Futures weekend food pack program that feeds 1,500 kids each week; the State College School District directed funding to cover student lunch debt and to rent a mobile refrigeration unit for its Summer Lunch program, serving nearly 7,000 meals; and the York Suburban School District used funds to cover food expenses for its Impact Pantry for one year, serving 70 families twice a month.

been well charted, and now people are looking up for new stuff.” The unidirectional planetarium at the North M u s e u m i s p hy s i c a l l y made up of 70 seats and a 40-foot-diameter dome. A projection system uses special lenses to portray images of stars, galaxies, moons, constellations and other celestial bodies on the auditorium’s ceiling. “It’s more of a traditional movie-style planetarium where everyone faces the same way,” said Penkunas, a resident of Lititz. “The main thing with the planetarium is to get more space education out there. The goal is to educate about space and stars in fun and immersive ways.” Based on a rotating schedule, the planetarium offers about 15 to 20 different shows for adults and kids throughout the year, including “Night Sky Tours” and other seasonal presentations. That’s a total of more than 240 of the 30- to 40-minute presentations annually. The planetarium also periodically offers shows on dinosaurs and super volcanoes, as well as select documentaries. “I think we have a really good understanding of our solar system as it exists now,” said Penkunas. “We have a good understanding of the sun. But there are still a lot of questions. We have a really good idea

of how planets formed, but we don’t know a lot of the specifics. We know a lot more than we ever did before, but a lot of the exact mechanisms of astronomy are still very much being researched. Overall, there’s still a lot to learn.” The Nor th Museum’s planetarium receives more than 2,500 visits each year. Some come from curious out-of-town tourists, but mainly they are from Lancaster County adults and students who want to learn about other worlds, as well as the world around them. “A lot of times it’s people who have never been to a planetarium before,” said Penkunas . “ T he y hear there’s a planetarium, and they get excited. A lot of people come here just for the planetarium. Planetariums aren’t super common, and they aren’t easy to find.” “I always want people to think astronomy is cool and
accessible,” continued Penkunas. “Space is far away, but we’re not far away. I think it’s important for people to have an interest in astronomy.” The planetarium, which was built in the 1960s and renovated in 2012, is located on the main floor of the three-floor structure that houses the Nor th Museum of Nature and Science. The planetarium is surrounded by 12 main sections, each featuring its own themed exhibits, displays and collections. “I’d say that the planetarium is a companion to the rest of the museum,” said Penkunas. “It’s one of the ways we drive people to come here. There are two main features; the first is the rest of the museum and the second is the planetarium. It’s one of the main features.” For additional information, go to www.north museum.org.

eight- to 10-week mock trial season, which ends in the spring, includes local, regional, state and national competitions. “Speaking to a judge and speaking in front of jurors, I think that’s one of the biggest skills that mock trial teaches,” said Schlee. “Public speaking skills are transferrable to anywhere. There’s legal writing, and the critical thinking skills are huge. You have to explain things in layman’s terms and qualify witnesses as experts, and getting jurors to remember things can be tricky. A lot of it is just understanding how the law works. It’s just fun to play other teams and see how each team interprets each case and how they portray it.” Currently, there are 16 CVHS students in grades nine through 12 involved with the mock trial team. “(The students) enjoy acting. They enjoy performing,” said Schlee. “Not only do our students come from the drama department, they also come from the marching band. Some are just off the football field.
of Lititz, Manheim Township, Manheim, Hempfield, Ephrata and Lampeter. Those musicians are masters of flutes, saxophones, trumpets, tubas, baritones, trombones, French horns, snare drums, timpani and clarinets. “These are people who have a commonality,” said Samly. “It’s a diversity of musicians who have a love of music. They have an enduring passion. Our rehearsals are like twohour workouts. We see each other frequently, and we enjoy each other’s company.” “They’re very talented,” he continued. “We have a wide range of experiences, and most have been playing for quite a while. We put on a professional perfor-
We have students who are involved with other activities here at CV. We have students from all walks of life. They’re just kids who want to have fun and learn about the law. They all come together to form a great mock trial team.” Other Lancaster County schools that field mock trial teams include Lancaster Catholic, Lampeter-Strasburg, Penn Manor, McCaskey, Lancaster Country Day and Cocalico. In the state, mock trial team competition is sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association, and nearly 300 teams from hundreds of high schools compete. CVHS has been fielding a mock trial team for nearly 20 years. “There’s no substitute for a real competition environment,” said Schlee. “As the year goes along, the students get more comfortable in their skills. I love working with the kids. Mostly, it’s about helping the kids grow.” For additional information, go to www.pabar .org/site/For-the-Public/ Mock-Trial-Competition.

mance. You have to enjoy it, but there’s a professional aspect to it.” The Lititz Community Band’s origins can be traced to the late 1800s and the now-defunct Lititz Concert Band. That spirit of community is the band’s enduring legacy. “We have to be one of the oldest and one of the biggest volunteer bands in the county,” said Samly. “We’re a mainstay in the Lititz community. Tradition is a big part of it. That’s important.” “If you really have a love of playing and you want to play, we’ll find a place for you,” Samly added.
