GSV Half/10K Introduces New Race Director Allison Cuthie Will Take Over 2021 Event BY ANN MEAD ASH
olding a safe but in-person event was a top goal for Allison Cuthie, associate director of development with Garden Spot Village (GSV) and now race director for the GSV Half Marathon and 10K scheduled for Saturday, March 27, beginning at 8 a.m. at GSV, 433 S. Kinzer Ave., New Holland. “As a runner, I really want people to have the opportunity to run,” shared Cuthie, who noted that race volunteers, most of whom are GSV residents, have been open to safe ways they can help out so the event can be held. The 2020 race was held in a virtual format. Former race director Scott Miller, chief marketing director at GSV, began working with Cuthie more than a year ago to prepare her to take over the race, which has been a tradition in the area for more than a decade. “I spent time … observing everything (Miller) and staff members were doing so I was familiar,” recalled Cuthie, who said when it

was time to start planning the 2021 event, Miller asked if she was ready to take over. Well aware that the year would bring challenges, Cuthie took on the role. To overcome those challenges, Cuthie has been meeting with the GSV infection prevention specialist to discuss how problems would be mitigated in certain areas. A variety of changes will be implemented, including packet pickup with little or no contact; a “to-go” style dinner the night before the race; a wave start, which sends racers out at intervals, on race day; and a finisher’s zone Cuthie is calling “Accomplishment Alley,” where pickup of medals and food will be streamlined. All awards will be mailed. A virtual option will be offered for those who choose that method of completing the run. As it has in the past, the race will begin and end on the GSV campus, following the same route that was instituted in 2019, when the race went from being a full marathon and a half marathon to a half marathon and a 10K. “On campus,
we will follow whatever the state Department of Health guidelines are at the time (of the race),” said Cuthie, who noted that everyone at GSV must wear a mask, including runners who may remove their masks at the start and put them back on at the finish. Cuthie is hopeful that this year’s event will be held live. “Even if it’s pared down, we can still offer it, assuming there are no restrictions on large events,” said Cuthie, who noted organizers plan to make a final decision before Monday, March 1. “We hope to do (the best) we can for the runners, but we’re a retirement community, so we have more to think about than having a race,” she added. Cuthie, a resident of Mount Gretna, is well-known in New Holland as the originator of the Hometown Heroes banner program and for her work with Visions. In Proverbs 31, the writer describes a woman of noble character. To many women studying the text, the characteristics of this woman may seem daunting. “A lot of women who read Proverbs 31 … walk away with a list of things to do,” said Lancaster County resident Mari Hernandez-Tuten, author of “Proverbs 31 in 5 Minutes a Day Bible Study,” which was released in early September.
