developmental program, Scouting America - formerly Boys Scouts of America - teaches participants practical lessons and skills that can be applied to life. But perhaps the most impactful lessons are the personal ones learned from others, especially from those who are different. “It’s not just boys and girls; it’s Scouts,” said Erin Blank, an assistant Scoutmaster for Troop 83. “We don’t try to differentiate between genders. It’s about one word, empathy. I have brothers and sisters who fight tooth and nail, but when they’re out in the community and someone picks on one, the other is there. That’s what we’re teaching. It’s very hard to teach empathy.” Troop 83, which meets at its

Thrifty Kitty Thrift Boutique Same Address, New Building BY FRANCINE FULTON
After closing in August due to storm damage, the Thrifty Kitty Thrift Boutique, a thrift shop operated by Humane Pennsylvania (Humane PA), has reopened i n a d i f fe re n t b u i l d i n g a t Humane PA’s Lancaster campus. Additionally, the store, which previously operated on a limited basis, is now open for business seven days a week from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. The store, which is located in the Lewin Adoption Center for Cats & Critters, is run by volunteers. A soft opening was held at the location on Dec. 7. “People who come to look at the cats will be directed to the thrift shop,” noted Karel Minor, president and CEO of Humane PA. “The nice thing is that because the shop is strictly volunteer-run and we were in a separate building, we were only open on Thursdays, Fridays and Saturdays. Here, is it seven days a week because we are here for adoptions. Our staff can bring people (to the thrift store) if there are no volunteers here.” Minor noted that the former thrift store, which was housed in a purple building on the campus, was damaged during last summer’s storms. “The parking lot flooded out, and it did damage to the foundation. Interestingly, this space had been the original thrift shop many years ago,” said Minor. “It got converted to vet space and was a veterinary hospital for years before the Humane League merged with the Humane Society of Berks County.” Items are still in the process of being moved from the former

For Neidermyers, Firefighting Is Shared, Bonding Experience BY JEFF FALK
Fourteen-year-old Briella Neidermyer is making her own way, forging her own path. Because his example is providing guiderails for his daughter ’s journey, her father, Kirk Neidermyer, der ives a lo t o f parental pride from that

emerging independence. That he gets to share in her developmental experiences is a sheer delight. “I think doing this with Briella will make our relationship even stronger,” said Kirk. “ We’ll have a bond in a different way. She’s my firstborn and only d aug hter. We get along. We respect each other. S he listens and does what she’s told.” The bond that Kirk and Briella share is firefighting and community service. Kirk has been a volunteer firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, 339 E. Main St., New Holland, for 25 years, while Briella, a ninth-grader at EL ANCO Online Virtual Academy, has officially been a probationary firefighter for about three months. But to say that Briella is following in her father’s footsteps might be selling her individuality a bit short. “ M y d a d h a s a l w ay s been one of the people I looked up to,” said Briella. “I’ve always watched him run out of the house and put on that blue light. I’m very, very proud of him because when he shows up, he shows out and does stuff on the scene.” Briella spent parts of the last six summers attending a cadet camp designed fo r s c h o o l - a g e yo u t h s interested in becoming first responders, learning about various pieces of firefighting apparatus, learning to roll hoses and engaging in firefighting techniques. Since becoming a probationar y firefighter with Garden Spot Fire Rescue, she’s gone out on a number of calls, for about a half-dozen of which Kirk has been the driver of the fire engine. Because of her age, Briella is limited in the duties she can perform, so her main role has been to connect fire hydrants. “ S h e c a n’t g o i n s i d e (burning) buildings, and she can’t go on runs involving heart attacks and vehicular accidents,” said Kirk. “Right now, it’s all a learning experience. Her main thing now is fire hydrants. She’s a gofer. If someone needs help with something, she’s going to

help them with it. When I drop her off at the firehouse, I know she ’s in good hands. It’s kind of like a second family.” “I think it’s going really good,” said Briella. “When I go on calls, I get to the station, get on my gear, I get on the fire truck, and when we get there, we all have certain roles. I’ll start flowing water from a hydrant. I’m still learning - everyone is still learning.
But if I have questions, I’ll go to (my dad) and ask him because I trust him.” “I want people to see me as confident and independent,” she added, “because when I show up, I do my best.” Garden Spot Fire Rescue couldn’t do what it does without the service of 50 volunteers. Briella is one of only two active female first responders within the organization. See Firefighter pg 6

boys and five girls between the ages of 11 and 17. Many of the Scouts attend school in the Conestoga Valley district, but others reside in the Warwick, Manheim Township and Hempfield areas. The troop’s leadership is made up of 20 adults, about 14 men and about six women. “These are kids from all walks of life,” said Blank, a resident of Browns to w n . “ We h ave k i d s from all socioeconomic backgrounds. Some are preparing for the military. Some are preparing for trade schools. They all work together to solve problems. Some are accelerated, and some kids just want to have fun.” Broken down into patrols by experience and age, members of Troop 83 earn merit badges to advance their ranks. Local Scouts engage in service projects like assisting with Wreaths Across America and the Adopt-A-Highway program and volunteering at Conestoga Valley School District events. The Scouts also regularly canoe on the Conestoga River, go on tenting and cabin camping trips and compete against other patrols within the Pennsylvania Dutch Council of Scouting America. “I want these kids to learn that tenacity and per-
sistence are lifelong skills,” said Blank. “I want them to know that mistakes are paths to success. We want them to be able to take challenges, turn them into small wins and have the small wins accumulate. Seeing a kid stand a little taller is one of my favorite things.” “Empathetic parents, advisers and mentors can make a difference,” she added. “As a parent, I love being a part of it because I love being part of their adventure.” The Pennsylvania Dutch Council serves more than 5,300 Scouts in Lancaster and Lebanon counties and is supported by more than 2,400 adult volunteers. Since being established in 1958, Troop 83 has provided opportunities to develop citizenship, leadership and character for thousands of Conestoga Valley-area Scouts. “ Fo r s e v e n d e c a d e s , Troop 83 has existed to provide outdoor adventures to youth and to provide training in civics and life skills,” said Blank. “Scouting is an undermined treasure. The door is open for more people than the community understands. It’s providing skills for future generations through fun and adventure.” For additional information, search for “Troop 83 Leola” on Facebook.

Emily Smucker-Beidler said that she doesn’t know if she prefers teaching art or being an artist. T he West Hempfield Township resident will be able to do both during the hands-on Redware Ornaments Workshop, which will be held Saturday, Jan. 17, from 9 a.m. to noon in the Mennonite Life Community Room, 2215 Millstream Road, Lancaster. The event is for people 13 years old and up. There is a fee to participate; Mennonite Life members receive a discount on tickets. The cost of materials is included. Anyone who wishes to take part must register at https:// mennonitelife.org/events by Thursday, Jan. 15. Guests will make their own redware ornaments that they can pick up at Mennonite Life four weeks after the activity. “Redware refers to the kind of clay which was used by the early American potters,” Smucker-Beidler said. “Many of them were farmers, and they would find a vein of clay in their field. The legend is that they would walk around the field, and wherever it didn’t make a footprint they knew that there was clay underneath there. They ’d dig up that clay and process it and make it into functional items. This was something that was brought over from Europe, but it’s a very early American craft. They needed functional items to use. They started making pottery, and the potters would make it and then sell it.” Smucker-Beidler explained how the process works. “In my workshops, everyone has a prepared slab of clay,” she said. “The slab has been rolled out, smoothed, painted with the white slip (which is watereddown clay), and gotten to a point where it is what we

Not only does it teach them something new, but it builds their relationship.” For more information about those seminars, g o to @ e m i l y f ra k t u r on Instagram, search for “Emily_Smucker_ Beidler” on Facebook, or email emilysbart @gmail.com. “I’ve been able to teach learners from all different ages,” she said. “There are some things that are different about each age, but there are some things that are the same.” Smucker-B eidler is aiming to stop the stereotypes. “One of the things that I find with the adults that come to my workshops is we all have these preconceived notions of what an artist is and whether we consider ourselves an artist or not,” she said. “I like to break through that and create a supportive learning environment where people can come and just learn a little history and create something that they didn’t even know was in them. That’s the joy for it for me.”
“Me and my dad have a really strong bond. We’re close,” said Briella. “Outside of firefighting, we do a lot of activities together, like softball. He’ll help me with my schoolwork if I need it. We’ll play video games together, and I’ll just talk to him.” “She ’s 100% committed,” said Kirk. “Any time she can go (to the fire station) to train and learn, she jumps on it. She’s into it. I hope she stays that way, and I think she will.” Briella has her whole life ahead o f her, and sometimes things change. But it could be that this shared firefighting exper ience with her d ad is laying the groundwork for a career and maybe even a

lifestyle. “I’ve thought about b e i n g a f l i g h t n u r s e ,” said Briella. “Basically, a f light nurse is someone who goes to accidents in a helicopter. The helicopters transport people to hospitals, where they can get more care. There are courses I can take in high school, and I want to get all of my qualifications.” “I’m ver y proud of Briella,” said Kirk. “She’s come a long way. She’s a very talented kid. I think it’s important to let your kids follow their dreams and to support them in any way you can. Anything you can do with your kids is impor tant . You just don’t know what’s going to happen.”

Amadeus Chorale from pg 1 at Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster. ACYS’ first rehearsal will be conducted at 4 p.m. on Sunday, Feb. 1, at Lancaster Church of the Brethren. ACYS is broken down into two age-related groups - the SaraSingers for children ages 6 to 10 and the Lyric Choir for Singers for older k id s between ages 11 and 14. Children and their families are asked to register before the informational meetings at www .amadeuschorale.org. There are fees associated with participation in the programs. “(The singers) will learn that there are people all around the world who share the dreams they have,” s aid B air. “Different languages don’t separate us. It’s a global p e rs p e c t i ve . We te ac h children that there are right ways to do things. We teach them how to do things properly so they can grow in confidence. That’s the kind of things we look at and celebrate as a win.” Par ticipating singers will rehearse for an hour each week. As the singers progress, the choirs will c re a te re c o rd i n g s a n d music videos, per for m publicly at about three or four concerts and festivals each year, collaborate with other groups of musical ar tists and embark on trips. “We give our kids a lot of experiences,” said Bair. “I don’t believe in competitions. I only want to give my kids stories to tell of where they’re singing and who they’re singing for. I want the kids to have experiences to have lifetime stories to tell.” ACYS participation is open to all Lancaster County youths with an interest in singing. “I’d like to see all Lan-
caster County children come sing with me,” said Bair, a native of Lancaster County and a resident of East Lampeter Township. “ We don’t have a maximum number. If we have a choir that gets too big, we’ll start a new one. We have two requirements: A child must sing in tune, and a child must show respect for ever y adult involved. That’s it.” Involvement with ACYS programs could instill a lifelong love of singing into matur ing youths. Proceed with caution. “They are children who already know they love singing and their parents are willing to suppor t them,” said Bair. “This is for kids and their families. It’s like the family is joining the organization together. These are people who want to invest in their children and get the type of high-quality music instr uction you can’t get anywhere else. You can see the quality in the things we do.” “ Pa re n t s c a n e x p e c t t h e i r c h i l d re n w i l l b e elevated in their vocal etiquette,” added Bair. “They can expect their children will be in a safe environment. (The children) can be who they authentically are. T he parents often form their own sub-group, like a club of parents.” Bair originally founded ACYS in Rochester, N.Y., in 1996. At the heights of its success, the program featured 140 singers and staged performances at numerous hig h-profile events. “We just sort of moved it here,” said Bair. “I’m really open to the opportunities here. We want to duplicate the joys of the stories, but the stories are going to be different here. These kids will be very much of the community, learning about it and being a part of it.” EPHRATA

Conestoga River on Ballot for River of the Year The Conestoga River is in the running for River of the Year for 2026, and the Conestoga River Club and partners encourage everyone in the Conestoga watershed to vote. The Pennsylvania Organization for Watersheds and Rivers, an affiliate of the Pennsylvania Environmental Council, with funding from the Pennsylvania Department of Natural Resources, awards one Pennsylvania river the status of River of the Year each year. This year, the Conestoga River Club nominated the Conestoga River to be on the ballot, with support from nearly 20 partner organizations in and around the Conestoga River watershed. The
Conestoga is one of three rivers on the ballot. Now the vote is up to the general public. People may vote for the River of the Year at https://pawatersheds .org/vote-for-a-2026-river -of-the-year/. The ballot will be open until Friday, Jan. 16, and the Conestoga River Club’s goal is to get at least 10,000 votes for the Conestoga River. If the Conestoga wins River of the Year, the Conestoga River Club will be awarded $15,000 to organize a series of activities and events throughout the year highlighting the river and providing education on its beauty, the challenges it faces, and the ways the community is taking action to care for it.
