Alisa Sholly, who has participated in No Longer Alone Ministries family support group meetings for about a decade is grateful for the experience. “As the name says, I no longer feel alone in knowing how to deal with mental health concerns involving loved ones,” said Sholly. “I receive valuable information on mental health topics, a listening ear from others that can understand, and prayer.”
Michele Sipel, director of InHome Services with Landis at Home a division of Landis Communities, is well attuned with the mission of the support group, which meets monthly at Landis Homes. Sipel serves as a liaison for the group, which provides a safe place to open up for those who have a loved one living with mental illness. “It’s a different world, and unless you live it, you don’t know (what it’s like),” said Sipel. “It’s one of those subjects where there’s a lot of stigma, but it is so important.”
Meetings are held on the fourth Sunday of each month. The next support group meeting will be held via Zoom on Sunday, Jan. 22, from 3 to 5 p.m. The January meeting will include a video by Dr. Matthew Stanford, PhD, followed by discussion.
The support group was an offshoot of No Longer Alone Ministries (NLAM), which functioned in Lancaster from 1991 to 2019. When NLAM closed its doors, a peer support group and the family support group overseen by the ministries were transferred to local entities. The peer support group, called Paths to Discovery, became part of Faith Friendship Ministries, and the family support group transferred to Landis, where several of the founding members live.
Landis offered personnel with the necessary expertise to help organize the group as well. Sipel noted that Evon Bergey, vice president of community initiatives with Landis Homes, is from a behavioral health background and added that she and other organizers work with Bob Musser, a licensed social worker who worked with NLAM, to plan meetings, line up speakers, and facilitate meetings. The group began meeting at Landis Homes in January of 2020. After the advent of COVID-19 restrictions, the group met virtually. In 2023, January, February, and March meetings will be held via Zoom so that inclement weather will not be a deterrent. The group plans to meet virtually once each quarter so that those who cannot come to Landis Homes may attend.
Among the past topics that were covered at meetings are innovations in treatment, anxiety and obsessive-compulsive disorder, overcoming grief, mental health and the Bible, and bringing healing to senior care.
Sipel said the group provides an atmosphere of caring and acceptance. “You get to know each other, so people feel comfortable being vulnerable. It is very therapeutic to be able to speak about what you’re going through with others who have lived it and understand.”
Sholly noted that NLAM has provided her with optimism. “It is a place to find hope when things seem hopeless,” she said. “I encourage anyone who is struggling or knows someone that is struggling with mental health issues to attend. It has been a Godsend for me and my family.”
To register for the January Zoom meeting, contact 717-381-3599 or jalbright@landis.org by noon on Friday, Jan. 20.

When Frank Gaston completed the Restart Training Center Ministry (RTCM) program at the end of December 2020, he knew he needed to avoid going back to the life he had when he was addicted.
“I started praying,” recalled Gaston, who was seeking God’s counsel on what to do next. The answer had four wheels. “I have always worked on cars. They are my hobby,” Gaston said.
Before completing the RTCM program, Gaston had worked in warehousing, but he also hustled cars. “I would buy a car from people if I knew they needed money,” said Gaston, who soon realized what God was calling him to do. “(God) told me to (buy and sell cars) for good (purposes),” Gaston revealed.
The result is Slow Down Ministries - an organization that currently provides cars for graduates of Christ-centered programs like RTCM, Revelations of Freedom Ministries, The Potter’s House,

and The Potter’s House of Ruth. Gaston, whose title is founder/director, explained that often individuals in recovery have a special need for low-cost transportation. “A lot of times, people in addiction have lost everything, so when they complete a program, they are starting fresh,” he noted. “(A graduate) may get a job, say, on a farm in Morgantown, but then there’s no way to get them there, and they feel defeated and they may relapse,” Gaston explained. Slow Down Ministries can fill the transportation gap by providing a car at a reasonable price.
To fulfill that mission, Gaston currently works with Andrew Lockman of Clearview Complete Auto Care in New Holland, who donates time and garage space to evaluate donated vehicles or ones Gaston has purchased. Cars that cannot be repaired are sold for scrap.
Gaston’s dream is to expand the ministry to provide cars for more community members in need. “Down the road, we would like to provide cars for others who can’t afford them,” he said. “That is something we are working on.”
What Gaston needs to make that dream happen is more community support. “I need (volunteer) time, money, parts, labor, whatever the community can give,” said Gaston. Slow Down Ministries is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit with a four-member board. Contributors will receive a tax receipt for donations of funds or vehicles.
Gaston knows that growing the ministry will depend on God. Recently, he connected with Christian MissionaryTechnical Services of Reading, an organization which has provided vehicles to missionaries on furlough. The ministry has an abundance of cars to sell, and
Gaston sees the opportunity to salvage some of those vehicles for his ministry.
“I want to do more,” said Gaston, who noted that the name Slow Down is the opposite of “hustle.” “(The name) reminds me to stay

On Oct. 22, 2022, sponsors, volunteers, and mission families came together to support Greystone Manor Therapeutic Riding Center (GMTRC) at its 10th annual “Mane” Event Dinner and Auction presented by Garman Builders at Bent Creek Country Club. The event raised $70,000 to carry out GMTRC’s mission to enhance the lives of individuals with special needs and other diagnoses through equine-assisted activities. Other event sponsors included Bobby Rahal Lexus of Lancaster County, Lancaster Toyota, and Thrivent.
The event’s mission ambassador was 44-year-old Nathan Buckwalter, an Ephrata native, who is celebrating 40 years of therapeutic riding with the organization. Nathan, who was born with cerebral palsy, started riding at GMTRC in 1982 at the age of 4. His parents, Ray and Nancy Buckwalter, shared that therapeutic riding enables Nathan to strengthen his core and loosen his tight muscles in a nontraditional therapeutic setting without causing pain.
During the “Mane” Event, Nathan was able to reunite with one of his former volunteers from the early

Pieces Of The Past
BY ADRIAN ESCHENWALD
When driving through eastern Lancaster County on Lincoln Highway, you might not notice a small, yellow building between Ronks and Soudersburg. Although the unassuming structure could pass as a quaint residence, within its walls resides a unique collection of history that has been assembled by its curator, Stephen Meyers.
Bible History Exhibits, located at 2827 East Lincoln Highway in Ronks, boasts a display of archaeological replicas and information that is related to the Bible. The exhibit begins with the book of Genesis and follows the Bible’s timeline through the book of Revelation; replicas of tablets, statues, weapons and scrolls that reference
the events of the Bible are placed in chronological order in the display. “Most people may be reading the Bible but may not know that there’s a lot of archaeology and discoveries that directly relate to it,” Meyers said.
Each replica refers to civilizations or events that existed at the same time as biblical characters if it does not refer to these characters directly. The beginning of the exhibit displays replicas of tablets that refer to the epic of Gilgamesh, the Great Flood and the Tower of Babel. Archaeological discoveries made in Egypt populate the section of the exhibit that documents the book of Exodus, followed by replicas of artifacts from Israel, Assyria, Babylon, Persia and Greece in biblical times.
Fundraiser
Since 1981, GMTRC has provided therapeutic equine-assisted activities to children and adults with special needs and other diagnoses. The $70,000 raised at the fundraiser will be used to ensure that low-income disabled community members will be able to continue to receive ser-

vices regardless of their ability to pay. GMTRC has also created customized programming for special interest groups of people who share a common interest but do not have a disability or diagnoses. To learn more, visit www.greystonemanor trc.org or call 717-844-3941.
“The real artifacts are in museums around the world,” Meyers said. “I’ve made replicas and brought them together so that you don’t have to travel to the other side of the globe to see everything.” Meyers occasionally acquires replicas from other people, but more often he creates the replicas himself. He stays up to date on the latest news of archeological discoveries so that he can recreate them and add them to the exhibit. Each segment of the exhibit is also accompanied by informational pieces that detail how some of the artifacts were created or used. One such educational display shows how ancient peoples tanned leather and treated papyrus to fashion into scrolls.
In addition to the artifacts and
informational displays, Bible History Exhibits is peppered with photographs that Meyers took himself while traveling through the Middle East. When he is not traveling to the ancient world, Meyers resides in Philadelphia, where he moved from Ohio to attend Westminster Theological Seminary. He opened Bible History Exhibits about eight years ago and stays in Lancaster while the museum is open.
Meyers has also written several booklets on various historical topics, which he sells online and at the exhibit. Almost every item in the exhibit is for sale, and the profits from their sales help to keep the exhibit open. Bible History Exhibits operates under The Institute for Biblical and Scientific Studies, a nonprofit organization.
