BASKETBALL COMPETITION

The Knights of Columbus 13451 will host a free throw competition on Saturday, Jan. 11, from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. in the gymnasium at Our Lady of Lourdes, 150 Water St., New Holland.

GOTR Schedules Free Film About Impact Of Technology

The trailer for the film “LIKE - A Documentary About the Impact of Social Media on Our Lives and the Effects of Technology on the Brain� ends with the daunting question, “Are you using technology or is it using you?�

Girls on the Run (GOTR) of Lancaster-Lebanon hopes to start a conversation around that question when the organization presents the film on Friday, Jan. 31, at the Ware Center, 42 N. Prince St., Lancaster. The event is free to members of the public age 10 and up. Doors will open at 6:30 p.m., and the film will be shown at 7 p.m.

Sarah Yohe, development director with GOTR, said that the subject of the film is especially pertinent. “We know that technology is a really relevant topic for our girls and our entire community,� said Yohe. “This documentary really

digs into the addiction piece of technology. It talks about how we spend a lot of time connected and feeling more disconnected than ever.�

GOTR programs combine running with an interactive curriculum designed to promote good choices for a lifetime of self-respect and healthy living. Yohe noted that the face-to-face time is important in the current cultural environment. “We get our girls together twice a week for 10 weeks to make real live personal connections,� she said.

The curriculum teaches life skills and strategies to help build confidence and character. A 2016 study found that a majority of the girls who completed the program learned to resolve conflict, help others, and manage emotions.

To enhance the discussion, the screening will be followed by a panel discussion and the opportunity for the audience to ask questions. The panel See GOTR pg 6

When David Felty, executive producer, considered bringing the Sight and Sound Theatres original production of “Ruth� to the Lancaster Bible College (LBC) stage, he felt the show, based on one of only two books of the Bible

GiGi’s Playhouse from pg 1 place on Saturday, Jan. 11, when GiGi’s Playhouse, a Down Syndrome Achievement Center, will open at 2503 Oregon Pike, Lancaster. An open house to celebrate the grand opening will be held from 1 to 3 p.m.

Although the open house is a drop-in event, Jen Voshell, who is also a board member, said that specific activities are planned. Self-guided tours of the facility, which includes a large room, two small rooms, a kitchen, and a family room, will be available from 1 to 2 p.m. At 2 p.m., Nancy Gianni, who founded GiGi’s Playhouse in 2002 and named it for her daughter GiGi, will speak, as will GiGi’s Playhouse president Kim King. “Some of our families will talk about what GiGi’s Lancaster means to them,” said Voshell. A ribbon-cutting ceremony will be held, and refreshments will be served.

More than 30 families participated in the Domestic Violence Services (DVS) of Lancaster’s Holiday Shopping Event on Dec. 19. The event took place from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m. at First Presbyterian Church of Lancaster in downtown Lancaster.

Members of the benefiting families, who are clients of the DVS safe house, legal clinic and Bridge House (a transitional

home) services, were given the opportunity to shop for their loved ones. Children were invited to shop for their parents and siblings with the help of more than 25 volunteer personal shoppers in one room, while parents were assisted in selecting gifts for their children in another.

focuses on social skills, physical skills, and school skills, such as colors. Fantastic Friends is a program for individuals age 18 and up. “It’s a time to hang out and build relationships,” said Voshell. GiGi Fit is a young adult exercise and healthy lifestyle class.

Christine Hewitt said that GiGi’s grew out of a group called Celebrate Down Syndrome, which had been in existence in Lancaster for many years. The group decided to change the name to GiGi’s Playhouse in 2016. Since that time, the organization has been hosting galas, fundraisers, and get togethers, such as Pancakes and Pajamas, which is held near the holidays, to raise funds to open the playhouse.

Gianni, who founded GiGi’s in Chicago, was inspired to start the program after holding a support group meeting for families of children with Down syndrome in a room made available in a local hospital.

“She took it upon herself to create GiGi’s Playhouse,” said Voshell. “She became well known and was able to help other communities open their own playhouses.” GiGi’s Playhouse Lancaster is the 47th playhouse to open in the United States.

“GiGi’s differs because everything we offer is free to families,” said Kinsey, who listed therapeutic services, such as speech, physical, occupational, and social services among the playhouse’s offerings.

“All family members are welcome and encouraged to stay,” she stated, adding, “It’s not therapy just for our individuals with Down syndrome, it’s (a model) for what you can do in-home.”

Kinsey also noted that GiGi’s Playhouse is inclusive. “It’s not just for individuals with Down syndrome,” she said.

Kinsey noted that support is available for individuals of all ages. “GiGi’s is a lifetime commitment to families. We help from prenatal diagnosis through adulthood,” she explained.

“There will be fitness classes,” stated Kinsey. The center hopes to offer young adults and adults a program called GiGi University to provide career training or life skills. The classes encourage education, socialization, and ways to help individuals be more independent.

Four types of classes are scheduled for the next several months at GiGi’s. “Classes will consist of LMNOP, which stands for Language, Music, and Our Peeps,” said Voshell, who noted that the class, which is for children age 3 and under, will focus on developing language and social skills through play. Destination Discovery will be a class for people of all ages that

Expo from pg 1 Students throughout the English Language Arts department at Conestoga Valley High School spent the last few months preparing to show an audience of teachers, staff members, and community members their projects at the second annual Creative Minds Expo.

Not only were students in charge of completing their own projects in time for the Dec. 12 showcase, but they also were in charge of planning the event, promoting it, decorating the hallways, and even organizing the catering. The group had roughly two months to work on its projects and organize the event, which was open to the entire Conestoga Valley community.

At the expo, visitors were welcomed by students from Melanie Upton’s journalism class, which was in charge of the event planning process for the expo. The class members took care of everything from the social media promotion to working directly with the district caterer to select hors d’oeuvres for the evening. On the night of the event, visitors worked their way through the school’s English Language Arts hallway, where each class showcased its projects in the room where it meets.

In the LGI room, students presented posters that focused on various social issues, asking questions such as “Is it better to be Americanized or to embrace one’s culture?” and “Why do people use trends to fit in?” as well as “Do natural disasters result in as much good as bad by bringing people together?” In the film festival room, students showed off the films they had made about issues such as domestic violence. In another room, students performed “Lovers and Liars: The Musical,” which they wrote and directed.

The focus of the night was on projectbased learning, a teaching method where students gain knowledge and skills by working for an extended period of time on an authentic and complex question, problem, or challenge. The trend toward project-based learning is one that continues to grow at Conestoga Valley School District with the implementation this year of its Profile of a CV Learner. The Profile of a CV Learner represents the foundational elements in all students’ education and serves as the “North Star” for the district. The Profile notes that CV strives for all learners to be collaborators, innovative problem-solvers, communicators, global citizens, and lifelong learners.

Singer-songwriter Andrew Pauls will perform at Emmaus Road Cafe, 1886 Lincoln Highway East, Lancaster, on Saturday, Jan. 4. Doors will open at 7 p.m., and the music will begin at 7:30 p.m.

Pauls’ original songs are rooted in traditional American folk music and soulful banjo and guitar playing. In Pauls’ music, listeners will hear influences from songwriters John Prine and Bob Dylan as well as contemporary artists such as Mandolin Orange and The Tallest Man on Earth.

Auditions Set For Upcoming Productions up. Preference is for actors and actresses who can sing and play an instrument, but this is not required. Set in the 1930s, this musical tale introduces the members of the singing Sanders family, who, after a five-year hiatus, perform their traditional and bluegrass gospel songs at a Saturday Night Gospel Sing, where their individual stories and beliefs are shared.

Auditions for two Promise Players productions are scheduled at Lampeter Church of the Brethren, 1900 Lampeter Road, Lancaster, on Saturday, Jan. 4, from 2 to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5, from 4 to 8 p.m.

The group’s spring musical comedy, “Smoke on the Mountain,” written by Connie Ray and Alan Bailey, will be performed on Friday to Sunday, March 20 to 22, and Thursday to Sunday, March 26 to 29, and the whodunit play “The Case of the Duplicate Date Nut Loaf,” by Tom and Celesta Letchworth, will be presented on Friday and Saturday, May 15 and 16.

Roles in “Smoke on the Mountain” are for four men and three women age 18 and

projects on campus, as well as helping boost the school’s recycling and composting program.

LM Middle School will continue to do environmental care around the campus by planting flowers, carrying out rehabilitation projects and developing a pollinator garden and water catchment basin next to the stream. Students will focus on a total land area renovation for their fourth-quarter projects in 2020.

- 1/3 cup Golden Barrel Light Corn Syrup - 1 tsp. salt - 1 tbsp. butter, softened - coarse sea salt for topping

Line an 8x8" pan with aluminum foil that overextends the pan on all sides (to lift out for easy removal). Lightly grease foil with butter. Combine cream, sugars, and light corn syrup in a heavy-bottomed saucepan. Heat over medium heat, stirring constantly with wooden spoon until sugars are melted and mixture starts to boil. Stop stirring. Attach a candy thermometer to rim of pan making sure the bottom of the thermometer doesn't touch the bottom of pan. Let mixture boil until temperature reaches 245 degrees F (it'll take time so be patient!) As soon as it reaches 245 degrees, remove from heat and add in salt and butter. Stir until butter melts. Pour hot mixture into prepared pan and sprinkle coarse salt over top. Let set uncovered on counter for 4 hours or overnight. Once set, remove caramel from pan by lifting the foil. Remove foil and cut into rectangles or squares. Wrap individually in wax paper wrappers. Store at room temperature.

As a choreographer, Grayberg said that there will be several songs that will include ensemble celebratory dances.

“There’s a (number where) they enter the Temple of Chemosh, a god of the Moabites, with live percussion and extravagant dancing,” she said.

As she deals with the challenges of bringing a big show to a smaller stage, Grayberg wants audiences to focus on the message of the show. “I hope audiences see this as a story of redemption and faithfulness and see that God works things out for good,” she said.

Grayberg also lauded the cast members, noting that the students feel honored and thankful to play the roles. “I hope (audience members) see the truthfulness of the actors,” she said.

To be sure “Ruth” fills these roles for the audience, Grayberg is focusing on the heart of the tale. “This bond between these two women is beautiful,” she said. “We are stripping the story down and bringing out the human aspect,” she said. “Ruth was used by God to facilitate (His plan).”

From a musical perspective, Grayberg noted there will be significant changes.

“This is the first time a Sight and Sound show will be done with a live orchestra,” she said, noting that LBC’s Dr. Bruce Gerlach listened to a recording of the show and wrote the score for a 26-piece orchestra. Songs that Grayberg believes will stand out include “I Will Go Where You Go,” and “By My Side,” which are sung by Ruth and Naomi together. She also pointed to a solo by Boaz called “Taking Your Chances.”

Christmas Tree Recycling Church Plans Program Slated Organ Concert

Lancaster Church of the Brethren, 1601 Sunset Ave., Lancaster, has announced that it will present its annual Starlight Tea Epiphany Concert twice this year. Concerts will take place on Saturday, Jan. 4, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Jan. 5, at 3 p.m. The second concert was added after the church had to turn people away at last year’s concert due to space constraints.

Each year, the Chancel Choir, the Carillon Bell Choir, soloists and instrumentalists join to present music of Advent, Christmas and beyond. This year’s performance will include special guest instrumentalists the Lancaster Brass Quintet, percussionist Rich Klimowicz and flutist C. J. Flint.

The centerpiece of the program will be a newly composed setting of “Gloria” by renowned American composer Daniel Gawthrop. Also featured will be a new setting of the “Magnificat” by Arlen Clarke, as well as several carols of the season. Brethren composer Shawn Kirchner’s “One Sweet Little Baby” will close the concert.

The Carillon Bell Choir will present two pieces. “Veni” by Jason W. Krug uses the “singing bell” technique to create an ethereal soundscape. “On Christmas Day in the Morn” by Fred Gramann joins three different carols in various combinations, including all three at once.

After the Saturday evening concert, the church will celebrate another of its traditions: the Starlight Tea in the Family Life Center, with homemade treats prepared by the congregation’s bakers and chefs. Attendees will be able to meet the musicians.

As with all Starlight Tea concerts, admission is free, with a freewill offering received.

According to park officials, residents drop off about 1,500 Christmas trees each year, which produce 22 tons of mulch. The mulch is ideal for acid-loving plants such as rhododendrons and azaleas, as well as many deciduous ornamental trees and shrubs that require slightly acidic soil conditions. The mulch will be available to residents on a firstcome, first-served basis after Tuesday, Jan. 7, near the tree drop-off site. Persons desiring free mulch should bring a pitchfork or shovel and a bag or a trailer to transport it home.

County residents can participate in an environmentally friendly way to dispose of their Christmas trees by dropping them at the mulching site at Lancaster County Central Park, 1 Nature’s Way, Lancaster, between dawn and dusk through Friday, Jan. 31. Trees must be free of decorations, lights, plastic bags, and hardware, including nails in the trunk.

The park mulching program is for Christmas trees only. No other yard waste will be accepted. There is a three-tree limit per vehicle. Commercial haulers are strongly advised to contact their local municipalities for their respective Christmas tree recycling locations.

There is a suggested nominal donation for each tree. Donations will benefit the operation of the Dr. John Moss Native Tree Nursery in Central Park. Trees from the nursery are utilized throughout the county park system. Moss, a former professor at Franklin & Marshall College and a founding member of the Lancaster Environmental Action Federation (LEAF), worked to promote the conservation of natural resources for the improvement of the environment of Lancaster County’s public parks and open spaces.

New Foundation Program Unveiled The Chesapeake Bay Foundation has unveiled a new program designed for educational and conservation partners to connect students and teachers in Lancaster County to fun and meaningful learning opportunities outdoors.
