Marching Into “Transcendence” By Chelsea Peifer
Cool temperatures and sunshine graced the air as students in the Columbia High School (CHS) marching band started out the annual week of band camp from July 30 to Aug. 3. By the end of the week, however, band members found themselves in a delicate dance of escaping torrential downpours and rain showers to rehearse inside the gymnasium instead of outside. The students learned and rehearsed for “Transcendence,” which they will perform during halftime at CHS football games this fall, as well as at several band competitions and the Columbia Mardi Gras Parade, Manheim Farm Show parade, and Columbia Memorial
Day parade. This year’s show was collectively selected by director Dan Stauffer, assistant director Demetrius Archer, color guard director Bill Harker, percussion instructor Jeremy Beckley, and color guard instructor Michelle Resh. CHS senior and woodwind section leader Trinity Cover, who plays flute, described the show’s first two movements as ominous, with slower, melancholy music. “You can tell we’re in the darkness and we’re about to find the light,” Cover explained. “Last year’s show was more of a historical show about taking flight and birds, planes, rockets, and the moon, so this one is a lot different.” The 23 instrumentalists will wear their traditional Crimson Tide uniSee Band Camp pg 5
Club Will Host Postcard Expo By Dayna M. Reidenouer
Then and now, postcards are a snapshot - sometimes literally - of everyday life. “They are windows of the past,” said Lancaster County Postcard Club charter member Jere Greider. “I’ve learned more history from postcards than (I did) in school,” added Dede Schaeffer, who is also a charter member of the club, which was formed in 1990 at the behest of Jim Ward and Charlie Griffiths. Postcards were initially developed in the 1800s, and they were a highlight of the World’s Columbian Exposition in 1893. Initially, they consisted of an image on the front and a space to write the address on the back. In 1907, the divided back was introduced.
