The Gen. John H. Michaelis Chapter 327 of the Korean War Veterans Association (KWVA) will meet at noon on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in the Bluebird Commons of Woodcrest Villa, 2001 Harrisburg Pike, Lancaster. Membership in the KWVA is open to all men and women who served in Korea at any time from 1945 to the present or were in uniform serving anywhere during the period from June 25, 1950, to Jan. 31, 1955. in cooperation with Middle Creek Wildlife Management Area (MCWMA) and the Pennsylvania Game Commission, will hold a photo contest with the subject “Birds of Lancaster or Lebanon County.” The contest is sponsored by club member Len Eiserer, author of “The American Robin: A Backyard Institution.” Cash awards will be given to first- through third-place photographs in both adult and youth divisions, with an additional award for the best photo taken at MCWMA. Photos must be new and must have been taken since Aug. 1, 2017. They must be 8 by 10 inches and unmatted. The deadline is Wednesday, Aug. 1. All entries will be displayed at the Visitor Center at MCWMA. Columbia Public Library To Reopen Aug. 1 By Chelsea Peifer
Anticipation is growing as the days on the calendar edge closer to the grand opening of the newly expanded and
renovated Columbia Public Library, 24 S. Sixth St., Columbia, on Wednesday, Aug. 1. The public is also invited to attend a special dedication ceremony at 2 p.m. on Sunday, Aug. 12, at the
library. “We’re excited to have everybody back and be putting everything back inside,” said Columbia Public Library executive director Lisa Greybill. “We
hope this is a much more inviting environment, and we want people to be proud of their library.” Groundbreaking for the $2.5 million expansion took place on Oct. 1, 2017. See Library pg 8
The expansion and renovation of the Columbia Public Library is nearing completion, and the grand opening is slated for Aug. 1. Community members are also invited to a special dedication ceremony for the library on Aug. 12.
CHI St. Joseph Announces Plans For New Child Care Center
Color My Dreams 5K To Support Hands Across The Street By Chelsea Peifer
CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health has announced plans to open the St. John Neumann School for Children and Families in early 2020. The new school will be located at 401 Locust St., Columbia, and will serve children ages 6 weeks to 5 years old. The launch of this new program is a continuation of the nonprofit’s mission to improve the health of children and families in the Lancaster community. The St. John Neumann School for Children and Families has been designed by Lancaster-based architect Steve Funk. Pyramid Construction, located in Wormleysburg, will serve as general contractor. Hands Across the Street serves people in Columbia and the surrounding areas in more ways than one, and Deb Bixler is hopeful that the inaugural Color My Dreams 5K will help to make the community aware of the breadth
and depth of the organization’s outreach efforts. Hands Across the Street is based at Columbia Presbyterian Church and offers free community meals, a Summer Food Service Program for children, Fourth Street Café events, a clothing bank, a winter shelter, and a comprehensive transitional living program. Eric and Erin Price are among those helping to organize the Color My Dreams 5K on Aug. 18 at Chickies Creek Day Use Area in Columbia. All proceeds will benefit Hands Across the Street, a nonprofit organization based at Columbia Presbyterian Church that aims to transform lives through clothing, food, and transitional living outreach efforts.
CHI St. Joseph Children’s Health plans to open the St. John Neumann School for Children and Families by early 2020.
