Tree Lighting Celebration Sponsored by the Manheim Brethren in Christ (BIC) Church, this year’s festivities will include performances by local groups, along with caroling, food and beverages, and more.

Attendees are also encouraged to bring donations of nonperishable food items for the Manheim Central Food Pantry and new and unwrapped toys for Toys for Tots. The annual Toys for Tots collection is organized by Northwest EMS on behalf of the U.S. Marine Corps Reserve and will continue through Wednesday, Dec. 11.

Toys for Tots accepts toys for children from toddler age through the teenage years.

Toys and other items for older children and teenagers might include sporting equipment, skateboards, helmets, balls, books, backpacks, cosmetics and cosmetic gift sets, purses, wallets, watches, board games, radio-controlled vehicles, handheld electronics, curling irons, hair straighteners, and hair dryers.

Each year, thanks to contributions from local individuals and businesses, Northwest EMS collects more than 20 boxes of toys, filling at least three ambulances. In addition to the collection at the tree lighting ceremony, toy collection boxes will also be placed at the registration station at the Manheim Santa Run/Walk 5K on Saturday, Dec. 7 and at the Northwest EMS office in Manheim, the Manheim Community Library, and Two Cousins in Manheim.

Embrace The Season At ith the Christmas season in full swing by early December, local residents are invited to embrace the spirit of the holidays at the Friends of the Manheim Community Library’s Holiday Crossings event at the Historic Manheim Train Station, 210 S. Charlotte St., Manheim. The event will be open to the public on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 10 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 8, from noon to 4:30 p.m.

The venue, providing a warm, cozy atmosphere, will be cheerfully decorated to remind visitors of holidays gone by. Local residents may also take another step back in time and view the miniature train display reminiscent of Manheim in the 1930s.

Santa will take a break from his pre-Christmas planning to stop by Holiday Crossings, as well. The Jolly Old Elf will be available for photos on Dec. 7 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. and on Dec. 8 from noon to 2:30 p.m.

Individuals who do not want to leave the holiday gift-giving entirely to Santa may want to check out the gift shop at Holiday Crossings, where they will find unique locally crafted items and holiday gifts. In addition, they may enter to win a basket via a giveaway drawing, as well as a one-of-a-kind Stiegel Glassworks item. Additionally, the Friends of the Library’s hospitality table will feature the 2019 Stiegel Glassworks membership ornaments.

Bibliophiles will also want to stop by the event’s Book Nook, which will be full of gently used Christmas-themed books for people of all ages.

The Cozy Cafe at Holiday Crossings will offer a menu of delicious food items, and hand-roasted peanuts will be available on the station porch.

Providing the musical backdrop for Holiday Crossings will be the Trust Trio, a strolling a capella trio that will sing Christmas carols while donned in period costumes.

All proceeds and donations will benefit the Manheim Community Library.

“Santa Claus Is Running To Town” Lions Club Sets Annual 5K D

owntown Manheim will be overrun with Santa lookalikes during the Manheim Lions Club Santa Run/Walk 5K, set for Saturday, Dec. 7, at Market Square in Manheim.

Participants will be called to the starting line at 8:20 a.m., with the race officially starting at 8:30 a.m. All runners and walkers are welcome to take part.

The race will be chip timed by Applied Race Management.

The course will be marked with signs, and a water station will be set up at the halfway point. Water and other goodies will be available for race participants at the end of the race. Additionally, medical personnel will be on hand after the race to take care of minor injuries.

Preregistration will end on Thursday, Dec. 5, at 11:59 p.m.

Race participants may pick up their race packets at Trinity Evangelical Lutheran Church, 48 Market Square, Manheim, from 4 to 7 p.m. on Thursday and Friday, Dec. 5 and 6, as well as on Dec. 7 beginning at 7 a.m. Registrants are asked to check in no later than 8 a.m. on race day.

The tour will feature six homes throughout Manheim that will be creatively outfitted with Christmas dĂŠcor to inspire new ideas and celebrate the season. Waltz Vineyards Estates Winery, 1599 Old Line Road, and REO Suites, 41-43 N. Main St., will also be part of the tour. Waltz Vineyards, a boutique winery owned by Jan and Kimberly Waltz, will showcase its tasting room for tourgoers.

Owners Barney and Suzanne Reiley have transformed the site of the former Bickel’s Potato Chip plant and the J. Spahr sold the popular REO Speedwagon, Flying Cloud, and Royale model vehicles, for which the individual REO Suites are named.
