When selecting a complementary shade, be sure to pick from the same tone as the colors featured on the card. That means if choosing the darkest of color #1 from a card, a complimentary tone will be the darkest from color #2.

Another idea is to leave walls neutral and use bold color on design accents. For example, some designers recommend painting the inside of niches or shelves or the interiors of cabinets with glass doors in bright tones while leaving the outside white to create an eye-catching space without going overboard. Put an arresting color on moulding or use an appliance or a fixture in a bright color as your splash of boldness.

Remember to have balance. If an entire room is painted in a bold color, think about choosing decor items in neutral colors. The colors of sofas and rugs should not compete with the shades of the wall.

Choosing a color scheme can be challenging when painting, which is why so many people stick with neutrals like beige and white when finalizing a decorative theme. For those who are ready to add a spark of color, however, there are a few guidelines to consider.

Color theory is a science, and there are rules of using color that are taught as early as a child’s first foray into art class. Most individuals know that there are primary, secondary and complementary colors on the color wheel. Keeping the color wheel in mind when selecting hues can help even novice home decorators do well in crafting an appealing environment.

According to HGTV, color should flow throughout a house. Every room need not be painted the same color. However, colors should be complementary enough that they flow into one another without jarring the senses. Do not paint one room in basic primary colors, while painting other rooms in jewel tones and pastels. Homeowners will do best by sticking with one theme and carrying it throughout the abode.

Once the use of bold color has been decided on, wouldbe decorators should first designate a color inspiration. Color combinations that appear in nature tend to be more readily accepted by people and considered soothing to the eye, so look for an item in nature, such as a seashell or a flowering plant, to base color choices on. Other designers pull inspiration from a particular item.

For instance, maybe an area rug strikes your fancy. Use colors that appear in the rug in the room.

Keep in mind that using bold color does not mean every wall from ceiling to floor must be painted in that color. Rather, if using bold colors, consider selecting one wall to serve as an accent wall. Use that wall as a daring canvas and paint it with the chosen hue.

Some people like to experiment with a more flashy color in a smaller space. Start out by painting a small powder room if tackling the living room or kitchen first seems too daunting. A more intimate space might seem less overwhelming when painted in a bold color. Go for a deep purple or another rich tone. However, try to avoid greens in the bathroom, as they may reflect off mirrors and cast a sickly hue onto faces. Pinks and peaches, though, will create a more rosy,

When hanging paper, consider the following tips: STOCK THE TOOLBOX. Before doing anything, be sure to have the proper tools. Measuring tape, a sharp knife and scissors to trim the paper are all valuable tools. It is also important to have sponges and a seam roller to make sure the inevitable bubbles that form before the paper dries can be easily smoothed out.

Other tools or instruments to have handy include a ladder, a stepladder and a couple of buckets.

MAKE ACCURATE MEASUREMENTS. Hanging paper can be like doing math homework. Individuals should measure the room carefully so a project does not have to be delayed while more paper is ordered.

Multiply the ceiling height by the wall width to determine the square footage of each wall. Add the square footage of all walls to determine the total square footage of a room. To ensure sufficient paper is on hand for a project, the total square footage should be divided by 25. That figure will show how many single rolls of paper will be needed. Because all paper is sold in double rolls, divide the aforementioned figure by two, which will indicate how many double rolls are required.

READY THE SURFACE. Clean the surface to remove any stains, and fill any holes in the wall’s surface as well.

It is also a good idea to remove any light switch plates and outlet covers.

HANG THE PAPER. The paper-hanging process should begin by choosing a good starting point.

Oftentimes, the area around a window or door makes a good starting point, as any errors will not be as noticeable. When starting, draw a straight line from ceiling to floor to act as a guide to line up the first strip of paper.

Once the first strip of paper is hung, use the roller to remove any bubbles. Use the knife to trim any excess from the bottom or top of each sheet. When moving on to the next sheet, be sure to avoid any gaps or overlap.

While hanging paper can seem like a snap, it is actually a detail-oriented job that requires careful attention.

The Age of Antique Furniture How To Determine

By H.C. Garman Looking at the joinery, or how a piece of antique furniture is put together, will provide you with many clues to help determine the age of a piece. You will also, however, have to consider other factors, including what tools were used to make the piece and what the individual components look like. You should examine elements of the item individually, as well as the furniture piece in its entirety, to help correctly date it.

EXAMINE BOTTOMS, INSIDES AND BACKS By looking at the bottom or back of the furniture or inside the doors and drawers, you can typically garner important clues about whether or not the piece was machine cut or made with hand tools. Most all work done with hand tools will show some irregularities to the surface, such as plane marks and nicks.

DETERMINE WHAT TYPES OF TOOLS WERE USED When hand planes were used to smooth wood, they often left some sort of uneven surface. This is especially true on the back and underside of furniture. Cuts and nicks may also be present where hand chisels and other tools were used to shape the wood.

Circular saws, which began to be used in the 19th century, left a circular pattern, while manually operated hand saws left a straight pattern. Some woodworkers today are still making furniture by hand, as was done in the 18th and 19th centuries, so you need to look for other signs of age in addition to the item merely being a handcrafted piece.

DO ALL THE ELEMENTS OF THE FURNITURE MATCH EXACTLY? Smaller matching elements, such as wooden drawer knobs, chair spindles, or feet on a piece, may have a slightly different shape if they were handmade prior to 1860 or thereabouts.

that match more perfectly than those made by hand. It is very difficult to make the same part many times without the use of machinery.

LOOK AT WOODS AND UPHOLSTERY FABRICS Many people have trouble remembering all the different types of woods and finishes that were used in furniture making throughout history. Different types of wood were used during the various furniture periods, and if you are able to recognize them, this can help in pinpointing the age of the furniture. For example, oak was used prior to 1700. After that, mahogany and walnut were used extensively. In the 1800s, maple and cherry became popular in fine furniture, while many of the Victorian furniture manufacturers used mahogany and rosewood through the late 1800s. In 1900, oak became very popular again.

You cannot date a piece solely by the type of wood used, but it may be an indicator of age when it fits in with the overall style and age of other components that make up the furniture you are trying to date.

The same goes for the upholstered furniture - if it’s original, and that’s a big if. Silk, wool and cotton were spun and woven into a variety of damasks, satins and brocades with many different patterns.

LOOK FOR OLD SCREWS Screws were not made completely by machine until 1848, according to an Antique Trader article by Fred Taylor. If you find furniture screws that have completely rounded shafts, pointed ends and finished heads with matching cuts (much like are sold today), the furniture probably dates to the mid-19th century or later.

Screws made from about 1812 through the mid-1800s were partially machine made, giving the thread a more even appearance, according to Taylor. The heads were still finished with a hacksaw to add the groove to fit the screwdriver, however,

inyl siding is trusted by homeowners looking to add aesthetic appeal to their home's exterior.

Though vinyl siding may seem to be a cut-and-dry type of product, the vast array of vinyl siding colors and styles has created certain trends among consumers.

Made chiefly from polyvinyl chloride, or PVC, vinyl siding is the most commonly installed exterior cladding for residential construction in the United States and Canada, according to the Vinyl Siding Institute. The history of vinyl siding can be traced to Ohio, where it was introduced to the exterior cladding market in the late 1950s by a private company. The process of mixing colors was done by hand, and the product was very inconsistent. New innovations in siding manufacture during the next few decades, however, helped solidify vinyl siding's place among cladding materials like shake, wood and aluminum.

Vinyl siding comes in several different types. Here are the key variations: SEAMLESS VINYL SIDING. In the past, siding was created in specific lengths, requiring siding panels to overlap at points, often creating an unpleasant pattern. These points provided spots for insects, wind and moisture to infiltrate, leading to a weaker product. Today there are vinyl siding products that have removed the seams, creating a more visually appealing and durable product.

SOLID CORE VINYL SIDING. Even the best-made vinyl siding in the past had a flaw - it was not rigid and generally did not lie flat against the surface of a home. Solid core vinyl siding alleviates that problem by having a solid backing onto which the vinyl panels are attached. The core is then attached to the home. These products also boast a higher-than-average insulation rating because the foam core interlocks during insulation. This makes a solid barrier around the home.

VINYL SHAKE SIDING. Vinyl shake siding has been designed and colored to look just like real cedar shakes, but without the maintenance, such as powerwashing or staining, associated with a wood product. Vinyl shake siding offers the same benefits of other types of vinyl siding but tends to look like it is a more expensive cladding material.

VINYL LOG SIDING. Log cabins may seem like an adventure. However, being surrounded by wood can have its disadvantages, most notably with regard to maintenance issues. Vinyl siding manufacturers have created vinyl log products molded directly from real lumber, providing a look that mimics real wood, like that used for a log cabin.

As vinyl siding continues to be a favorite among homeowners, certain trends emerge each year. While rich-colored siding was a recent popular trend, another favorite includes a monochromatic look created by homeowners selecting earthy colors such as gold, clay and warm red shades and finishing the trim with colors only one or two shades off. Another current trend involves continued interest in renewable materials or siding comprised of at least some post-recycled consumer content.

Energy conservation is also on the minds of consumers, and some areas of the country have modified building codes to require continuous insulation of home exteriors to more effectively prevent the loss of cooler air and heat. As a result, more customers may begin to opt for solid core vinyl siding to meet demands for home insulation.

For homeowners who prefer a one-of-a-kind look to their homes, mix-and-match siding trends have developed. Mixing and matching siding styles can create instant curb appeal and an interesting backdrop for outdoor gardens and patios.

Stone entryways mixed with vinyl siding, as well as a mixing of traditional horizontal siding with vinyl shake or board-andbatten, are options that can be considered.
