Running with a chill in the air or snow underfoot is all par for the course when it comes to the York Road Runners Club (YRRC) Winter Series. The 2018-19 series is sanctioned by USA Track & Field and features eight races on various weekends in November to March, with one registration fee covering the cost to participate in all eight of the events. Professional chip timing will be included. Coordinator Heather Roe said that organizers aim to get everybody involved, whether they show up for fun or competition, are young or old, front of the pack or back of the pack, new runners or people with years of experience, or take part as individuals or families. “We want everybody to feel welcome,” Roe emphasized. Each of the races in the series will also include the option of a 1-mile race, set to begin 25 minutes prior to the main event. Roe said that this option is great for children and beginner runners, as well as for participants who would like to use it as a warmup

The York Symphony Orchestra will present “Musical Heroes” on Saturday, Nov. 3, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. The Classical Series Concert will be part of a global celebration of the life and career of Leonard Bernstein, an American composer, conductor, author, music lecturer and pianist. Bernstein, who conducted some the great orchestras of the world for more than four decades, was one of the first conductors born and raised in the U.S. to achieve worldwide recognition. One of his most widely known compositions was the score for the musical “West Side Story.” The global celebration is in honor of Bernstein’s 100th birthday. “Musical Heroes” will begin with Bernstein’s “Serenade (After Plato’s ‘Symposium’),” featuring concertmaster Denise Dillenbeck. “Serenade” was completed in five movements and was inspired by Plato, a hero of ancient philosophy. Seven speakers from Plato’s “Symposium” inspired the five movements of “Serenade.” The second half of the concert will feature Johannes Brahms’ Symphony No. 1, which established the composer as Beethoven’s successor. The symphony took 21 years to complete, from 1855 to 1876. As early as 1877, audiences began comparing this symphony with Beethoven’s works.

Denise Dillenbeck will be featured in Leonard Bernstein’s “Serenade (After Plato’s ‘Symposium’)” during the York Symphony Orchestra’s “Musical Heroes” concert on Saturday, Nov. 3, at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. York County Libraries Launch Early Childhood Initiative York County Libraries (YCL) recently announced details of its new early childhood initiative, 1000 Books Before Kindergarten, during a press conference at Martin Library in York. The event kicked off registration for the program at library locations across York County. Libraries across the county kicked off the program with special celebrations during story times. The 1000 Books Before Kindergarten initiative is an offshoot of a national program, and YCL has put its own spin on the program to encourage York County families to read with their young children. When parents or caregivers register their children for the free program at their local library, they will receive a free 1000 Books Before Kindergarten passport to start a reading journey that aims to get children ready for school and ready for life. Staff members will snap a passport photo and add it to the child’s passport. Families will then track the books they read, and as they reach each 100book milestone, they may bring the passport to the library to get a passport See Libraries pg 2
