September House Sets Schedule

Breakfast Event Will Announce Faith Build York Habitat for Humanity will hold a breakfast in partnership with the Black Ministers Association to announce the 2019 Faith Build, a partnership between York Habitat, Thrivent Financial and local churches. The breakfast will take place on Saturday, Sept. 14, at 7:45 a.m. at Stillmeadow Church of the Nazarene’s City Campus, 350 Chestnut St., York.

Faith Build will build the first of 14 new homes at the site of York Habitat’s Chestnut Street Revitalization project, where fire destroyed 16 homes in July 2009. The lots were acquired through an agreement with the Redevelopment Authority of the City of York and private owners.

Youth Program Seeks Volunteers AAUW Program Will Feature Beekeeper York County Juvenile Probation Services is seeking volunteers for its Youth Aid Panel, a diversionary program that holds youths accountable while avoiding the stigma of permanent criminal records.

Under the program, select children facing summary and misdemeanor charges avoid entering the formal criminal justice system by being diverted to court-sanctioned panels made up of community members.

There are Youth Aid Panels in every school district in York County. No special training or background is required. Volunteers must be 18 years of age or older,

have no criminal record and successfully pass state child abuse and FBI clearances, if applicable.

The panels meet once a month with the juveniles and their family in the evening. There will be an informational session held for prospective volunteers at 6 p.m. on Thursday, Sept. 12. New panel members must attend a one-day training that will tentatively occur from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturday, Oct. 5.

The senior center is planning a night out at Hoss’s on White Street in York as a fundraiser on Friday, Nov. 8. In preparation for the event, the center is selling gift cards, which will be ordered in time for

photos and memorabilia to use as they arrange pages. In conjunction with making scrapbooks, the center will offer classes on Tuesday, Sept. 10, to teach how to organize and print pictures from an iPhone or an Android device. Attendees will learn to set up albums and move pictures from one place to another.

A second class will be available on Thursday, Sept. 12, if needed. Both classes will run from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m.

On Wednesday, Sept. 11, exercising (dancing) to music will be offered starting at 10 a.m. Participants will practice old and new dances.

The Thimble and Thread Chapter of the Embroiderers’ Guild of America meets on the second Tuesday of each month from 7 to 9 p.m. at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. The group’s next meeting will be held on Sept. 10.

The group is for individuals who enjoy needlework, including needlepoint, crewel and cross stitch. Participants

gather once a month to stitch or to learn new variations of needle art. Stitchers of any skill level are welcome. Visitors are invited to bring a project to work on.

Tiffany Ayres, local beekeeper, will be the featured speaker at this season’s first meeting of the York Branch American Association of University Women (AAUW) on Tuesday, Sept. 10. Her topic for the evening will be “Mysteries of the Honeybee.” She will share about honeybees’ uniqueness, colonies,

hazards and hardships, and she will also discuss what human lives would be like without honeybees and what people can do to assist in their survival.

Membership in AAUW, whose stated mission is to advance gender equity for women and girls through research, education and advocacy, is open to any graduate with an associate or equivalent, baccalaureate or higher degree from an accredited institution.

Service Will Honor First Responders

Local gardeners are invited to attend an informal Community Garden Program sponsored by the Penn-Cumberland Garden Club on Tuesday, Sept. 10, at the Ames Community Garden in Shiremanstown.

The Service of Thanksgiving and Remembrance will be held on Sunday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m. in the Locust Street Park in Columbia. The purpose of the annual service is to recognize the community’s first responders and military veterans and to remember the victims of the terrorist attacks of Sept. 11, 2001.

The speaker for this year’s service will be the Rev. Dr. James L. Banach, a Civil War re-enactor chaplain. His message, given in his authentic uniform and presented as if he is speaking to an 1863 audience in Gettysburg, will highlight

how today’s first responders echo the Army and civilian volunteer responders during and after the Battle of Gettysburg.

This year, members of First St. John’s Lutheran Church of York will participate with Columbia’s St. Paul’s Lutheran Church as the partner congregation. A pianist and accompanying trumpeter from First St. John’s will perform Christian and patriotic songs, and a bagpiper will play “Amazing Grace” while a cash offering is received to benefit the Columbia Food Bank.

The York Women’s Association will gather on Monday, Sept. 9, at 6 p.m. for a tailgate-themed potluck meal to kick off its club year. The association, a community service and social organization for York County women, welcomes guests who want to find out more about the club and its activities. The association is an all-volunteer, non-

profit women’s organization that supports the York-area community. York County Libraries and Resin8 have teamed up to offer a free 3-D printing event on Saturday, Sept. 28, in the Teen Forum at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. The program is open to teenagers ages 13 to 18 and will be held in three one-hour sessions at 9, 10, and 11 a.m.

The event aims to help teenagers explore related careers and to understand how 3D printing can solve real-world problems.

Local engineers Lee King and Soji Otuyelu from Resin8 will introduce teenagers to 3-D printing and discuss its role in various career fields, such as manufacturing, engineering, health care, architecture, and the arts. Participants will learn about the skills needed for related jobs. The interactive session will also include an opportunity to partner with other teenagers to brainstorm how 3-D printing can be applied to real-life issues.

King and Otuyelu have a combined 24 years of experience in engineering, manufacturing, distribution, marketing, and education. Through their Resin8 education initiative, they are providing handson learning opportunities to central Pennsylvania students.

Richard and Glenda Naylor of York celebrated their 50th wedding anniversary on June 1 at a surprise celebration with friends and family. They also took a trip to Disney World.

Richard and Glenda met at Millersville University, where Richard earned his Bachelor of Arts and Master of Arts. They were married on May 24, 1969.

Mr. and Mrs. Naylor are the parents of Scott, husband of Michelle, and Joshua, husband of Becky.

Bocce League Celebrates 35 Seasons

The Victor’s Bocce League, based at Victor’s Italian Restaurant in York, is celebrating 35 seasons.

The original owners of Victor’s started the league in the summer of 1985. It began with a group of regulars on Saturday afternoons challenging each other in friendly matches. The league soon began to take shape as it grew into 11 teams of two.

When proprietor Marie Sindicich and her husband, Mark, took over Victor’s in 2008, there were 28 teams. The league expanded to 40 teams in 2009 and over the course of the next five or so years, the number of teams increased to 44 and then to 55. When the court was moved in 2016,

Representatives from York-based GRIT Marketing Group recently spent time leading a senior games day at SpiriTrust Lutheran’s The Village at Kelly Drive in York.
