As Hospice & Community Care (HCC) donor relations manager Coco Minardi reviewed the items pulled for a photo to advertise the 35th annual Labor Day Auction set for Saturday, Aug. 31, and Monday, Sept. 2, she laughed. “An autographed football, a life-size NASCAR poster, a quilt, and a mailbox: That’s the randomness of the auction right there.�

Indeed, at first glance it might seem like the epic two-day sale is full of a jumble of items every year, but it is all very deliberate. The things that have been donated to the auction are grouped by type, such as plants, quilts, sports memorabilia, used cars, and artwork. This year, the event will feature a tool auction for the first time. “ We work with the Amish community, and they do all of our food, which brought in $80,000 last year, but not many Amish people attend the auction,�

Minardi explained. In an effort to appeal to more Amish folks, the auction committee asked for advice, and “add tools� was the resounding response. “We called local construction companies, and hospice families have been cleaning out their sheds,�

and they will be sold to the highest bidders on Aug. 31 from 9 a.m. to noon in the second half of the plant building. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;re hoping we strike a chord with people who are do-it-yourselfers or Amish,â&#x20AC;? Minardi remarked.

The Labor Day Auction started in Lampeter, but four years ago, the event moved to the Solanco Fairgrounds, 172 S. Lime St., Quarryville, where it has flourished. The site offers ample free parking, and there is team parking at the venue as well. Golf carts will be available to shuttle people to and from their cars as needed.

Minardi reported that the first auction more than three decades ago raised $1,300, and the advertising material was not even the size of a half-sheet of letter paper. Last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event brought in $760,000. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We canâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t fit all (of the details) on anything smaller than eight pages,â&#x20AC;? she marveled.

For folks who would like to contribute to HCC without taking things home, the Day of Care Auction, which is sponsored by Engle Printing & Publishing Co., Inc., will be held at noon both days. Television personalities Corinne Lillis and Anne Shannon will host the auctions, during which attendees may virtually purchase days of care for hospice clients. The average daily cost of providing hospice care for one person is $187, Minardi said.

The proceeds from the Labor Day Auction will go directly to HCCâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s programs. The nonprofit organization has operations in Lancaster and York counties and provides palliative care, bereavement help, chaplain and auxiliary services, individual and group counseling, physical and online resource libraries, and more. In 2018, HCC served more than 15,000 families. Minardi noted that HCC serves more than 60 percent of the people who die in Lancaster County and a quarter of the deceased in York County.

HCC also offers services for people who have experienced tragic loss, including the death of pets.

The food tents will open on Aug. 31 at 9 a.m. and will feature omelets and sticky buns for breakfast and pork barbecue for lunch. Breakfast logs - those culinary delights of bacon or sausage, scrambled eggs, and cheese baked in a buttery soft pretzel crust - will be available when the food tents open at 8:30 a.m. on Sept. 2.

Minardi noted that an HCC volunteer is known to bring a cooler to the sale so she can buy two dozen breakfast logs to take home, freeze, and enjoy later.

Sept. 2 will also feature barbecued chicken and ribs, as well as doughnuts made on-site. The food offerings on both days will include fried shrimp, a salad bar, fresh fruit, smoothies, chocolate milk, and more.

Minardi and the auction committee are still accepting donations for the auction. They are especially looking for used cars and quilts. A number of unique items have already been donated.

Of special note are Ty Cobb baseball cards from 1909 and 1911.

The collectorsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; items will be sold on Sept. 2 at noon in the sports building. An Amish buggy will be up for bids, as well as sheds, a gazebo, and vacation stays for large groups of people. Recommendations of delivery services for the structures will be provided.

The YMCA of York and York County is set to collaborate with the Swim York City Foundation for a swimming event on Saturday, Aug. 24, at 4 p.m. at Graham Aquatic Center, 543 N. Newberry St., York. The public is invited.

Children in attendance may choose to to get in the pool, or they may sit in the bleachers and spectate. USA Swimming National Team member Justin Ress will educate students about water safety and swimming, as well as race a few York City students.

The event is free for all participants, family members, and friends. Attendees are asked to bring appropriate pool attire (bathing suits or swim trunks).

Swim team volunteers will be on hand to assist those who are new to the water, and family members are welcome to join their children in the pool.

The purpose of the program is to promote both the sport of swimming and swimming safety with the youths in the York community.

Convention And Cruise-In Slated The Eastern Museum of Motor Racing (EMMR) will host its 45th EMMR Convention and Cruise-In on Friday, Aug. 23, through Sunday, Aug. 25. “Kindness Matters” was the theme for the 2018-19 Lions Club International Peace Poster Contest. The international contest encourages children ages 11, 12, and 13 worldwide to share their vision of world peace through their creation of a poster. Through each level of competition from local to international, the posters were judged on their creativity, artistic merit, and demonstration of the theme.

This year the York New Salem Lions Club participated in the contest by sponsoring students in the Spring Grove Area Middle School.

Under the direction of teacher Anita Williams, the students displayed their creative and artistic talents, and the top three posters were submitted to the York New Salem Lions Club for selection of a winner to advance to the district level.

Veterans Invited To Fishing Event Heroes on the Water (HOW) Central Pennsylvania Chapter and the Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF), along with Shank’s Mare Outfitters and the Donegal Chapter of Trout Unlimited, will host the fifth annual Veterans on the Susquehanna event at Shank’s Mare Outfitters, 2092 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 1 to 7:30 p.m. Veterans and those who would like to honor them are invited to attend.

The day of kayaking and flyfishing, set for 1 to 5 p.m., will be free of charge. A dinner reception with live music will follow from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., and there will be a nominal entrance fee for the reception.

HOW provides kayaks, fishing equipment, and snacks free of charge for veterans and first responder outings. Veterans from all branches of the military

gather for fishing and time away from everyday stresses. Attendees may fish or just socialize.

Adam Gagne is the volunteer coordinator for the local HOW chapter, which is known as the only HOW chapter in Pennsylvania. Gagne is a retired Navy senior chief petty officer and was executive chef for the Navy at the Pentagon. He was stationed on submarines for more than eight years.

His connection to waterways extends beyond his passion for kayak fishing. As a civil engineering technician with the U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Natural Resources Conservation Service, he designs and works on restoration projects with the goal of reducing water pollution.

Storm Drain Art Project Continues In 2018, the Master Watershed Stewards in York formed a partnership with the City of York, the Chesapeake Bay Foundation, the Lower Susquehanna Riverkeeper Association and the Watershed Alliance of York to develop the Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Project, a project using street art to raise awareness about stormwater runoff and the negative impacts it can have on local waterways.

This summer, the Second Annual Street 2 Creek Storm Drain Art Contest took place.

A panel of judges from the community selected the top six entries. The Master Watershed Stewards also chose two Watershed Steward Choice Awards. The eight winning artists will complete their art at select storm drains in downtown York. York Springs Sets Community Day The York Springs Community Day will take place on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. throughout York Springs. The event will feature food, music, crafts, contests, and other activities.

Food Bank Receives Grant Children Learn To Make Butter The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $5,000 grant from the Walmart Foundation to help fight hunger in the Food Bank’s 27-county service area through Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) application assistance.

With this grant, the food bank will scale access to SNAP among eligible households, with particular emphasis on reaching seniors.

SNAP is a federal nutrition program dedicated to helping millions of people who face hunger.

According to the food bank, SNAP improves food security, offers benefits that enable families to purchase healthier foods, and frees up household resources that can be used for preventative

services and needed medical care.

The food bank says that more than 15 percent of Americans eligible for SNAP currently do not receive this benefit, and seniors are disproportionately affected by food insecurity and barriers to SNAP access. Among seniors, 58% of eligible individuals are not enrolled in SNAP. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s team of SNAP experts provides assistance and helps individuals determine their eligibility for SNAP benefits. Team members are available to assist in the application process through the bilingual Food Stamps Helpline at 877-999-5964.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank’s programs that reach

more than 136,000 individuals each month include ElderShare, MilitaryShare, Fresh Express, BackPack, Kids Café, Summer Pantries and Summer Feeding.

Last year, the food bank provided nearly 45 million meals and distributed more than 11 million pounds of produce from its locations in Harrisburg and Williamsport.

Walmart and the Walmart Foundation provide donations of both food and funds to the Feeding America nationwide network of 200 food banks.

Yorkfest To Showcase Fine Arts The Yorkfest Fine Arts Festival will be held on Saturday, Aug. 24, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and on Sunday, Aug. 25, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Festival events will take place in downtown York in and around the Colonial Complex and along the Rail Trail from Philadelphia Street to Princess Street. Spin art bicycles will return to Yorkfest. Attendees may create a masterpiece while getting a little exercise by pedaling a stationary bike to activate a spinning platter while a partner squirts paint onto paper.

The York County History Center is planning several activities in and around the Colonial Complex. The gift shop will be open, and tours will be available of the Murals of York and the Colonial Court House. Activities will also

include talks, demonstrations, and mini art lessons.

The Historic Codorus Creek Boat Parade by the Stewards of the Lower Susquehanna will launch at 2 p.m. on Aug. 24 from Bantz Park.

A variety of food and beverage options will be available at several locations throughout the festival.

Yorkfest organizers are also partnering with two other organizations that will host events downtown the same weekend.

York Fringe Festival will feature live performing arts experiences from Wednesday, Aug. 21, to Aug. 25 in multiple locations.

Seventy Pennsylvania National Guard (PNG) soldiers and airmen competed with rifles and pistols in multiple courses of fire to determine the best marksmen during the Governor’s Twenty match at Fort Indiantown Gap recently.

Created in 1968, the Governor’s Twenty is a state-level National Guard award presented annually to the top 20 shooters in a state.

Through this fierce competition, participants have the opportunity to test marksmanship skills and weapon systems in a battle-focused environment. The Army and Air Force both recognize the state award, and it is reflected on the service members’ official personnel record.

The top 20 scorers were awarded the embroidered Governor’s Twenty tab and a certificate to identify them as being outstanding marksmen. Events were varied and included multiple distances and shooting positions.

The competition was conducted by the PNG Individual Training Branch, Marksmanship Training Unit.
