Senior Center Members Win Medals Yorktown Senior Center members recently won medals in the Senior Games, a national program designed to aid seniors in staying healthy by being more active.

The Senior Games take place every year in June. For one week, seniors from throughout the county compete against each other and socialize. The Games include several categories of sports events, and participants may compete in the events of their choice. Several Yorktown Senior Center members have been competing in the Senior Games for several years.

Distribution Of Food Boxes Set Good Shepherd Lutheran Church, 2121 Roosevelt Ave., York, in conjunction with the York Food Bank, will distribute boxes of food to all eligible seniors on the third Monday of each month. Recipients must be at least 60 years old and be residents of York County.

Those who are homebound may designate a person as a proxy or guardian to pick up their box.

York Catholic High School (YCHS), 601 E. Springettsbury Ave., York, will welcome the community to get a first look at the new turf athletic field at the campus stadium on Monday, Aug. 19, at 7 p.m. The event will feature a ribbon cutting and the opportunity to meet members of the fall sports teams representing YCHS. Future students will have a chance to score a goal with players from the football, soccer, and lacrosse teams.

The turf field was is part of Phase I of the school’s “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” capital campaign designed to provide resources for needed renovations and improvements to the high school with a focus on academic, student life, and extracurricular experiences. The other project in Phase I due to be completed in the coming weeks includes renovated classrooms with facilitywide air conditioning and is due

to be coming in the near future.

Throughout the upcoming school year and summer 2020, Phase I will include upgrades and modernization to science labs and science lecture rooms; facility-wide safety enhancements, including an elevator’ and the creation of a new Student and Media Center, which will also house a College and Career Readiness Center, student center, renovated chapel, and upgraded lobby.

Hirt Reunion Slated The 76th Hirt reunion will be held on Sunday, Aug. 18, at the Liberty Fire Hall in North York Borough, 160 E. Eighth Ave., York.

The event will begin at noon, with the meal at about 1 p.m.

Provided will be hamburgers in Bury’s sauce; hot dogs with and without kraut; beverages such as iced tea, lemonade, and water; and paper products.

Attendees are asked to bring a covered dish to share.

The meal will be followed by a brief meeting. There will also be a giveaway drawing and a Chinese auction, for which everyone is asked to bring an item. There will be games for all.

This workshop focuses on the role of the faith community in awareness, education, and recovery support, as well as tips for initiating a team ministry.

Equipping Leadership and Developing the Team is a twoday workshop to build capacity for ministry teams that include training, recovery support activities, tools, strategies and educational handouts. This is tentatively scheduled for Friday, Nov. 8, and Saturday, Nov. 9.

Sustaining Local Ministries will discuss how to sustain

ministry teams to avoid burnout and provide a life-sustaining healing ministry. Teams continue to meet for further training and to share resources and connect to community services. GOAL provides continuing education and networking opportunities. GOAL provides local training and support as needed.

The F.A.I.T.H. Initiatives program is ideal for churches and synagogues, but is not limited to any specific belief group or tradition. People of all faiths are welcome to participate.

Fire Company To Host County Convention Yorkana Fire Company is turning 100 this year. In honor of that milestone, the fire company, 42 Main St., Yorkana, will host the 107th York County Fireman’s Convention on Saturday, Aug. 17.

The Penn State Master Gardeners of York County will host Butterfly Buzz on Saturday, Aug. 17, at the historic Hanover Junction Station on the York Heritage Rail Trail, 2433 Seven Valleys Road (Pennsylvania Route 616), Seven Valleys, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m., rain or shine. Butterfly Buzz is a family educational event that will celebrate the pollinating partnership between butterflies and native plant gardens. The event is free and open to the public.

Butterfly Buzz will feature an exhibit of live butterflies and larvae (caterpillars), a tour of the Hanover Junction Station garden,

equipment, and knowledge. A parade through Yorkana Borough will step off at 1 p.m. and will feature floats, walking participants, fire trucks, tow trucks, Revs mascot Downtown, and more. The public is invited to enjoy the small-town parade.

The Yorkana Fire Company will be open selling beverages. Its restrooms will be available, as well.

Main Street will close at noon for parade preparation. Parking will be available at Genie Electronics, in the back lot of the fire company, and at the Church of the Brethren at the east end of town.

Wing Nutz of York, a local remote-control model airplane club, has received a national grant to host a “Take-Off and Grow” (TAG) event on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its airfield, located at 4390 Board Road, Manchester. The event is intended to introduce and promote the hobby to the public.

The event will be free and open to the public. Pilots of remote-control devices are

required to present a valid ID and have a current AMA registration in order to fly. Additionally, a flight simulator and trainer personnel will be available for anyone wishing to try their hand on a computer simulator. A buddyboxing system will also be set up for those who want to try their hand at flying an actual model airplane.

There will be food and beverages available, as well as a variety of free prizes given away.

Aspen Home Improvements has launched a new program, Honoring Our Vets: One Roof At a Time. Through this program, the company will give a free roof to a military member every quarter. The program’s first roof install was completed for York County veteran Gordon Weith during the first week of August.

Weith, originally from Cleveland, Ohio, was drafted into the Army in 1972. He served as an armor officer in various assignments throughout the United States, Korea, and Germany.

Weith was deployed to Operation Desert Storm with the Third Armored Division out of Frankfurt, Germany. He also commanded a combined arms battalion in Berlin, Germany, from 1992 to 1994. After 25 years of service, he retired with several awards, including the Army Achievement Medal, Meritorious Service Medal, and Bronze Star.

After retiring, Weith worked as a contractor supporting Army live-fire training and field exercises. He is now active as the

vice president and senior intake officer of the Pennsylvania Wounded Warriors Inc. He is also involved with the York County Common Pleas Veterans Outreach Group, York County Veterans Outreach Group, and the Higher Standard Project.

Giant Pilots Enhanced Rewards Program Giant Food Stores has announced it is piloting a new way for its customers to increase their savings through personalized offers on products they already buy with the new Choice Rewards program.

An enhancement to its current Gas Extra Rewards program, Choice Rewards brings customized savings and rewards to customers via the Giant or Martin’s app.

By leveraging smartphone technology, Giant aims to provide relevant rewards to their participating customers. Choice Rewards is now available in a select pilot market, and it will

roll out by the end of the year.

Just like they do in Giant’s current program, customers participating in the pilot earn points on qualifying purchases at the rate of one point for every $1 spent. New through Choice Rewards, they will also be able to earn points through targeted “bonus earn” offers.

Food Bank Receives Grant The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank has received a $22,000 grant from the Darden Foundation to help provide more than 132,000 nutritious meals to thousands of families and individuals throughout 27 central Pennsylvania counties.

According to the food bank, one in nine individuals in central Pennsylvania, including one in six children, struggle with hunger. The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank serves nearly 140,000 people in need every month.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 193 food banks to receive this funding from the Darden Foundation. It is projected that this grant will

enable the food bank to fund several initiatives, including its youth and senior programs and its MilitaryShare program for veterans and active-duty military personnel.

The Darden Foundation is committed to supporting families facing food insecurity in communities across the United States. For seven years, the foundation has been working alongside Feeding America and its network of 200 food banks across the nation.

Shoe Drive Benefits Social Enterprise Program College Wins Grant For Knowledge Park

Soles4Souls is a nonprofit social enterprise that aims to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world. This was Coldwell Banker Residential Brokerage’s first shoe collection

for the nonprofit.

The offices with the largest collections include Harrisburg, 498 pairs; York, 285 pairs; Lancaster, 270 pairs; Kutztown and Wyomissing, 240 pairs; and Carlisle, 236 pairs. UPMC Pinnacle has shared its plan for moving its UPMC Memorial operations from its current 325 S. Belmont St., York, location to its new facility in west York.

Under that plan, the facility on Belmont Street will close, and the new UPMC Memorial will open on Sunday, Aug. 18, at 6 a.m. at 1701 Innovation Drive, York.

UPMC Pinnacle shared some key upcoming dates with the public.

The Belmont Street facility was scheduled to stop direct

admissions from physicians on Aug. 11. Any currently scheduled surgeries or procedures will proceed as planned.

On Thursday, Aug. 15, emergency medical services (EMS) and ambulance services will stop bringing emergency patients to the hospital on Belmont Street.

Patients will be taken to other area hospitals until the new UPMC Memorial Emergency Room (ER) opens. Walk-in emergency services will continue to be available at the Belmont Street

ER until Aug. 18.

On Aug. 18 at 6 a.m., the Belmont Street facility will no longer accept new walk-in ER patients.

Also, any remaining inpatients at the Belmont Street facility will begin being transferred to the new UPMC Memorial.

When the new UPMC Memorial opens on Aug. 18 at 6 a.m., it will also begin accepting emergency department patients and admitting new patients.

Elective services will start at the new hospital on Monday,

York College will receive a $6 million grant from the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to create a Knowledge Park on the 40-acre site of the former Schmidt Ault paper mill. The college’s award was among a number announced on Aug. 1 by Sen. Kristin PhillipsHill and Gov. Tom Wolf’s office.

The former paper mill property was purchased by York College in 2008 after extensive demolition and environmental abatement. The college has maintained the site since then, waiting for an appropriate future use. RACP funds will be used for construction expenses associated with converting three of four buildings that remain on the site into a Knowledge Park, which would

allow for expansion of current efforts underway at York College’s J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship. The center’s business incubator is at capacity with existing companies, some of which are ready to “hatch” and have a desire to remain connected to the college.

The buildings to be repurposed include the King House, which will become the administrative support center for the complex. Interior and exterior features will be repaired or upgraded as needed to serve the complex while maintaining the historic charm of the structure. The West End Warehouse will offer a dramatic entrance to the complex by introducing natural light, high ceilings,

large spaces, and mezzanines.

The Kings Mill Warehouse will serve as the interior crossroads of the complex with elevators, skylights, and large space meeting/assembly/office areas.

RACP is administered by the Office of the Budget for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects.

RACP projects are authorized in the Redevelopment Assistance section of a Capital Budget Itemization Act, have a regional or multi-jurisdictional impact, and generate substantial increases in or maintain current levels of employment, tax revenues, or other measures of economic activity.

Revolution Chooses New Team Dog The York Revolution recently announced that Revolution officials have found a successor for retiring team dog Boomer, who represented the team for 10 seasons. A six-month-old Siberian husky named Blu, recruited with the assistance of the York County SPCA, will succeed Boomer at the conclusion of the 2019 season. Fans will get their first chance to meet the incoming four-legged ambassador of Revs Time on Sunday, Aug. 18.

The Revolution is also accepting applications for a host family for Blu. In exchange for housing and caring for Blu when he is off duty and taking him to Revolution-funded appointments with East York Veterinary Center, the official vet of the Revolution team dog, the host family will receive a stipend and game tickets from the Revolution. Over recent weeks, UPMC Pinnacle has discussed the move with EMS providers and area emergency departments to help ensure a seamless transition.

The new UPMC Memorial hospital is a five-level, 102-bed facility with private patient rooms.

The 220,000-square-foot facility will provide acute and emergency medical care, maternity services, cardiology and vascular services, chronic disease management, and surgical services.

A 120,000-square-foot, fivelevel UPMC Outpatient Center will open next to the hospital building on Monday, Sept. 9. It will offer ambulatory surgery, outpatient imaging, a sleep lab, a cancer center, offices for specialty care providers, community meeting rooms, and more.

Penn State York Athletics has announced the appointment of two new coaches to the campus coaching staff. Keith Harmon was named head coach of women’s volleyball, and Tory Harvey was appointed head coach of women’s basketball.

Hartman earned a Bachelor of Science in marketing from Penn State Harrisburg and an associate degree in business administration from Penn State Mont Alto. He was a studentathlete at Penn State Mont Alto, where he played soccer from 1992 to 1994, and at Penn State Harrisburg, where he played club volleyball from 1995 to 1997 and served as captain of the team.

Hartman’s experience includes serving as the head varsity coach at Dover High School, where he began in 2016 and implemented coaching plans to develop students to be highly competitive on the varsity and junior varsity levels. He also conducted summer clinics for eighth- and ninth-graders to increase awareness and introductory skills development

prior to the students entering the high school level.

He continues to coach in the New Oxford Volleyball Association in New Oxford for the under 17 girls’ team and has previously coached several other Amateur Athletic Association Club women’s teams. Hartman works in advertising as a regional sales manager in York.

Harvey previously coached the women’s basketball team at Penn State York in 1996-97. He stepped away to become the director of athletics at Dallastown Area School District before retiring in the fall of 2018 to return to Penn State York.

Among his duties at Dallastown, he was a certified athletic administrator and teacher, managed 64 co-curricular teams, was an athletic administration course instructor for students, and taught a coaching principles course. In addition to his previous coaching experience at Penn State York, Harvey also coached in the York Suburban, Solanco, Red Lion, and Dallastown school districts.

Harvey has been recognized with numerous awards, such as being recognized as Basketball Coach of the Year twice in the York-Adams Interscholastic League, Basketball Coach of the Year in the PSAC Collegiate League, and Softball Coach of the Year in the York-Adams League, as well as being a twotime winner of the Athletic Director of the Year in the YorkAdams League. He has also led numerous teams to division and league championships and a PIAA championship. In addition to coaching basketball, Harvey works as the game manager for interscholastic athletic events at York Suburban School District.

A 1980 Dallastown High School graduate, Harvey holds a Master of Education in counselor education from Western Maryland College, a Bachelor of Science in business administration, and a business education teaching certification from York College of Pennsylvania.

American Legion Riders Donate Funds

Terry Gendron (holding check, left), executive director of York County Veterans Affairs, recently accepted a check from Don Bradley (holding check, right), chaplain of American Legion Riders (ALR) Wrightsville Post 469, as well as riders and guests from York County American Legion Posts, on June 18 at a monthly dinner held at Texas Roadhouse by several ALR groups from York County. The check represented the proceeds of the May dinner. A total of 24 riders and guests gathered at the June event, and a portion of each of their dinner checks was donated to the ALR to be given to the Higher Standard Project, a privately funded living facility for people in the Veterans Treatment Court program. Riders from Dallastown Post 605, Glen Rock Post 403, Hanover Post 14, Red Lion Post 543, Shiloh Post 791 and Stewartstown Post 455 participated in the dinner.

Redevelopment Project Planned A tract of land housing a longtime vacant grocery store in Dover Township will be redeveloped into a new Lidl grocery store partially through a $500,000 Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) grant, Rep. Seth Grove announced recently.

The land, located at the corner

of Carlisle Road and Hilton Avenue, will be home to a Lidl grocery store once demolition of the existing building and construction of the new store is complete.

The $11.5 million project includes the removal of existing buildings at the site and the ground-up construction of the

new store.

RACP grants are for the acquisition and construction of regional economic, cultural, civic, recreational, and historical improvement projects.

Leadership York has named Eric Hoffman as its new Leadership for Diverse Schools (LDS) coordinator.

Hoffman joined the Leadership York staff in June. In addition to serving as the LDS program coordinator, Hoffman is also a full-time, fourth-grade teacher with the York Suburban School District. He has also taught fifth and sixth grades, and

Last year’s campaign helped raise funds to send 300 children to MDA Summer Camp. Every year, children living with muscular dystrophy or a related neuromuscular disease come together to make friends, try new things, and build life skills, all at no cost to families. Since 2012, Jiffy Lube has raised more than $6 million nationally for MDA

through the Muscle Up campaign, and the business aims to raise an additional $1 million this year.
