Church Women United (CWU) in York County celebrated its 100th anniversary on June 15 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church. With the theme “Stepping Into Our Second Century,” the day remembered the past. CWU president Flo Waybright emphasized that the work is not over and members need to continue to reach out to the community. Rep. Carol Hill-Evans of the 95th Legislative District presented a citation to the organization. The citation reads in part, “Throughout its history Church Women United of York County has made inestimable contributions to the welfare of society through a sense of fellowship and through its programs, which are designed to enhance the quality of life for all.” Hill-Evans shared how she had grown up in York and believed in emphasizing the positive. In 2019, CWU supports many causes, including the League of EXceptional Individuals (LEXI), which works with the youths of York city to identify and choose See 100th Anniversary pg 4

York County Libraries (YCL) has announced new prizes as part of SummerQuest. YCL SummerQuest participants ages 5 to 18 have the opportunity to win a helicopter ride for completing 800 minutes or more of reading and activities this summer. A winner from each library will be randomly selected to take a ride in Mission Destiny Helicopter’s Robinson R-44 Raven 2 helicopter on Saturday, Aug. 17. SummerQuest is a program that provides opportunities for children and teenagers to stay active and keep learning during the summer break. This year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories,” invites exploration of space. Libraries across the county have planned more than 800 free activities for children and teenagers this summer. Due to the support of sponsors York Water Company and WellSpan Health, there is no cost to participate in the program, which will run through Aug. 18. YCL includes 13 libraries that provide print and electronic information, bestsellers, Wi-Fi, story times, book discussions and more. Children and youths must complete at least 800 minutes of reading and activities to be entered in the prize drawing. York County 4-H Fair Scheduled The York County 4-H Fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at the York County 4-H Center, 771 Stoverstown Road, York. The theme for the 2019 York County 4-H Fair is “Dream It, Do It, Show It, Earn It, Live It, 4-H.” The fair will showcase many of the different opportunities that 4-H provides to youths and families. More than 500 projects that have been made by 4-H members will be on display. Projects are from a broad range of areas, including but not limited to robotics, foods and nutrition, wildlife, and conservation. Food will be available for purchase, and all proceeds will benefit the York County 4-H Program. The fair is open to the public. Admission and parking are free. Garden Open House Planned

A garden open house will take place at John Rudy County Park in York on Saturday, Aug. 10. An open house will take place on Saturday, Aug. 10, from 9 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. in the gardens at John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York. The gardens and the open house are a project of the York County Penn State Extension Master Gardeners and the York County Juvenile Probation, in conjunction with the York County Parks and Recreation

Department. The event will be held rain or shine. Free refreshments will be served. Located adjacent to the stone house that serves as York County Parks’ administrative headquarters, the gardens were recently awarded second place in the Demonstration Garden category of the International Master Gardener Convention’s Search for Excellence Award.
