GENEALOGY CONFERENCE

a genealogy conference, will be sponsored by the South Central Pennsylvania Genealogical Society and the York County History Center on Saturday, Sept. 22. The conference will take place at the Historical Society Museum, Library and Archives, 250 E. Market St., York, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. The key note speaker will be local historian June Lloyd.

Her writings include books on York County-area fraktur, folk artist Lewis Miller, and York County in the American Revolution. Workshops during the day will focus on Pennsylvania Germans, as well as genealogy research in general. Attendees can choose from concurrent sessions in both category areas. Upstart Arts Posts “Merry Wives Of Windsor” Shows Upstart Arts has announced its initial venture, The Upstart Twilight Theatre (TUTT), formerly known as Theatre Under The Trees.

After 20 summers of presenting touring Shakespeare productions under the banner of DreamWrights, Michelle Denise Norton and Gayle Eubank recently formed Upstart Arts. The organization’s mission is to present performing arts in public spaces. This summer, after a successful online fundraiser, TUTT will present a bluegrassinfused production of “The Merry Wives of Windsor.” The

production will include physical comedy and music.

Performances will take place on Friday, Aug. 3, at 6:30 p.m. at St. John’s Episcopal Church, 140 N. Beaver St., York; Saturday, Aug. 4, at 6:30 p.m. in the band shell at Codorus State Park, located at Blooming Grove Road (Route 216); and Sunday, Aug. 5, at 6:30 p.m. at William Kain County Park, 274 Hess Farm Road, York, on the Lake Redman stage.

Admission is free, but donations are welcome. Attendees may bring chairs or blankets.

YCLC Plans Tutor Training The York County Literacy Council (YCLC) is seeking volunteers to tutor English as a Second Language (ESL) and native-born adult students who are seeking to improve their literacy skills.

YCLC provides free and confidential literacy services to adults in York County. Tutors may help students to study for their GED or to reach a literacy goal such as being able to read to their children, securing or improving employment, and working toward entry into an institution for higher learning.

Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education to help students to accomplish their literacy goals. The next training session will be held at York County Literacy Council, located in the United Way Building at 800 E. King St., York, from 1 to 4 p.m. on Mondays, Aug. 13, 20, and 27, and Wednesdays, Aug. 15 and 22.

Participants must attend all sessions. The parking lot may be entered from Sherman Street.

After completing the training, the tutors will meet with their students once per week for one and a half to two hours in a public location arranged by YCLC. YCLC coordinators will help tutors with the selection of materials and lesson planning throughout the tutoring experience.

Requirements to be a tutor include a high school diploma or equivalent, sensitivity, patience, reliability, and attendance at training, pending a preliminary interview. National Night Out Event Planned York First Church of God, Aug. 7, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The event will include free 507 Vander Ave., York, will hold a National Night Out event in food and refreshments, as well as the parking lot on Tuesday, games and activities for children.

PA Child Abuse Hotline Posted All schools in Pennsylvania will be required to publicly display a poster containing the statewide toll-free number for reporting suspected child abuse, beginning in the 2018-19 school year. Known as ChildLine, the toll-free hotline number to report suspected child abuse in Pennsylvania is 800-932-0313.

Posting this critical information in schools will let students know they have somewhere to turn if they

need to report abuse or neglect that they have suffered or if they suspect another child is being abused or neglected. The poster is required to be displayed in a high-traffic, public area widely used by students. The poster also would include the address of the Department of Human Services’ website that provides information and resources related to child protection.

Annual Tractor Show Scheduled The third annual Mid-Atlantic Allis Chalmers Tractor Show will be held on Saturday, Aug. 4, and Sunday, Aug. 5, at Wertz Farm and Power Equipment, 6877 Lineboro Road, Glen Rock. Show times will run from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on both days. This year’s feature tractor will be the D-Series.

Social Justice Forum Posted The York Association of the United Church of Christ, consisting of 26 churches, will sponsor the third annual Social Justice Forum on Saturday, Aug. 11, from 8:30 to 11:30 a.m. at Mount Zion United Church of Christ, 1054 Ridgewood Road, York. The group’s goal is to help participants acquire licenses and continue learning about ham radio.

September House Senior Center, 1251 W. King St., York, has posted its schedule of activities.

A painting class will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 7, at 9 a.m. Attendees will create original acrylic paintings on canvas board. The paintings will feature scenes of flowing wheat. There is a nominal fee for supplies.

On Wednesday, Aug. 8, at 8:30 a.m., a group of senior center members will make pretzel sandwiches. Anyone who ordered sandwiches may pick them up. Also on Aug. 8, the Lunch Bunch will carpool to Cracker Barrel at 11:30 a.m.

Theatre Arts for Everyone (TAFE) will present “Our Town� by Thornton Wilder at York Learning Center, 300 Seventh Ave., York, at 7 p.m. on Friday and Saturday, Aug. 3 and 4, and at 3 p.m. on Aug. 4 and Sunday, Aug. 5. The Pulitzer Prize-winning play was written in 1938 and first produced at the McCarter Theatre in Princeton, N.J. TAFE’s cast and crew is composed of a total of 28 people ages 10 to 90. They come from the towns of York, New Freedom, Red Lion, Yoe, Manchester and Hanover.

Organization Welcomes Dubas Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful announced the new hire of Rob Dubas, who joined the team as a program coordinator. Dubas will help facilitate the Illegal Dump Free PA initiative across the state, working with local governments, communities, and enforcement agencies to identify and hold accountable individuals and businesses that choose to dump their trash illegally. IllegalDumpFreePA.org is an innovative program launched in 2015 that provides surveillance camera loans, training, and support to Pennsylvania municipalities and community groups.

After working in banking for almost a decade, Dubas earned a Master of Environmental Science and Management from Duquesne University. He decid-

ed to change careers to one that made protecting the environment a priority after having spent many hours in the woods volunteering with Pittsburgharea trail groups, mountain biking, running, and hiking. As part of his studies, he also had internships with an area land trust and a long-term waterquality research project.

United Way Recognizes Volunteers United Way of York County recognized four volunteers with awards at its annual meeting on June 18. United Way staff, board members, and partner agency representatives gathered at Martin Library to celebrate the volunteers and the partnerships that help with building a stronger, caring community.

Amy Wannemacher was named Volunteer of the Year. Wannemacher, vice president of tax at P.H. Glatfelter Company, currently serves as the chair-elect to the United Way of York County board of directors and recently completed service as the Search

Committee chair for United Way’s incoming executive director. She is a longtime volunteer on United Way’s board of directors and Executive Committee, and she also served on the Allocations Panel in 2015 and Strategic Planning Committee in 2016.

Keith Noll was honored with the Distinguished Service Award.

Noll is senior vice president of WellSpan Health and president of WellSpan York Hospital. A member of the Alexis de Tocqueville Society and immediate past chair for United Way’s board of directors, Noll has served on the board since 2009, including as board chair in

2015-16. He also served as campaign chair in 2013.

Daniel Clever was presented with the Labor Partnership Award.

A member of the National Association of Letter Carriers (NALC) Branch 509, Clever has a record of community service through Boy Scouts, the Goodwill Fire Company No. 1, and East Prospect Lions Club. Additionally, he has organized the NALC Branch 509 efforts for the Stamp Out Hunger food drive in York County since 2008.

Kathy Seilhamer received the Community Build Award. Seilhamer, manager of external affairs at Met-Ed FirstEnergy,

served two full terms on United Way’s board of directors, including time on the Executive Committee and Human Resources Committee. She has been a member of Women United since its inception in 2013. She has consistently secured sponsorship from her place of employment to support United Way’s Day of Action, and she has managed a consistently successful employee campaign at the business for several years.

United Way of York County was assisted by more than 2,200 volunteers in 2017, according to executive director Robert Woods.

The Shiloh Lions Club and its Hoops for Sight committee recently awarded the Paul Breneman Award to Bonnie Hensel.

Hoops for Sight is a Shiloh Lions fundraiser that supports research to find a cure for retinal diseases, including retinitis pigmentosa (RP).

The Paul Breneman Award recognizes a group or person who has made a great contribution in helping the club reach its fundraising

goal and advance the cause of fighting RP. The award is named for Paul Breneman, a late club member who worked tirelessly to raise funds for the cause.

Since the establishment of the fundraiser 10 years ago, Hensel has been an active member of the planning committee and has secured numerous donations for the event. She is also a member of the Foundation Fighting Blindness advisory board.

Ice Cream Social Set Salem United Church of Christ, 24 Franklin St., Jacobus, will host an ice cream social on Saturday, Aug. 4, from 4 to 7:30 p.m. Ice cream and sundae toppings will be available for purchase. Given in honor of renowned conservationist Aldo Leopold, the award recognizes those who inspire others with their dedication to land, water, and wildlife habitat management on private, working land. The award brings together agriculture, government, environmental organizations, industry, and academia to advance the cause of private lands conservation.

Pennsylvania Farm Bureau welcomes this opportunity to promote the inaugural Leopold Conservation Award in the state as another occasion to recognize and reward farmers, who are going above and beyond in adopting best management practices on their farms to protect the environment, while maintaining the future economic viability of their farming operations.
