Lyden, a York native, brings more than 20 years of experience working in government and the private sector. He most recently served as senior manager of public policy for Uber with responsibility over technology and workforce issues.

Committee on Government Reform and Oversight and the Committee on Education and the Workforce in the U.S. House of Representatives.

The Fire Solutions Group (FSG), a client of the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College, recently hired alumnus A l e x a n d e r S m i t h as its chief technology officer and software developer. FSG was established in 2013 as a fire testing and product development company.

Wood burning will take place on Friday, Aug. 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. Wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays. Participants may learn different techniques for feathers, fur, and shading.

Church Plans Bible School Lighthouse Baptist Church, 5005 Carlisle Road, Dover, will hold vacation Bible school (VBS) from Monday to Friday, July 29 to Aug. 2, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. The theme is “Joshua,” and the VBS is open to 3-year-olds through those entering seventh grade in the fall.

Classes to prepare for the High School Equivalency test (GED or HiSET) are available. Several instruction classes will be offered. Instructors prepare students to succeed on the subtests one at a time until students obtain their diploma. Students must attend an orientation and register for the classes.

The Adult Learner’s Class is a remedial program that incorporates the multisensory approach in its curriculum. Students attend classes and have the opportunity to also participate in the online program.

English as a Second Language classes focus on instruction for adult students in basic conversational English through advanced

English. Multi-level classes are provided. An orientation and entrance test determines the class level.

Volunteer tutor trainings prepare individuals to help an adult in York County to meet their educational goals such as basic reading skills, English as a Second Language, High School Equivalency Certificate, and math skills. Volunteer tutors do not need a background in education. The next free, 15-hour training will be offered in August. Participants must attend all of the training sessions.

York County Literacy Council (YCLC) will offer free classes and training programs. YCLC provides free literacy and educational opportunities for adults, age 18 or older, in York County in an effort to help them achieve educational goals, obtain or improve employment opportunities, prepare for post-secondary education, and improve the quality of life for themselves and their families.

An orientation for Pre-Nurse Aide Training classes will be offered on Tuesday, Aug. 6, and Thursday, Aug. 8. Pre-Nurse Aide Training classes will begin Monday, Aug. 26, and run for three weeks. This course is an opportunity for attendees to see if a health care career is for them.

The course will help attendees to get ready for a Certified Nurse Aide Course in a post-secondary school. Potential financial aid may be provided through Career Link, and health care employers will meet with the class.

Citizenship instruction and naturalization services are available. Lessons include American Government, American History, Citizenship Test Preparation, English Language Lessons for Reading and Writing, and Consultation on the Naturalization and Application Processes. Attendees must be a legal permanent resident with at least five years of residency (or three years if married to a U.S. citizen), be a person of good moral character, be age 18 or older, not have traveled outside the U.S. for over six months in one calendar year, and know the

Partnership Promotes Safe Medication Disposal Giant Direct Now Available At 100 Stores

Rite Aid and The Rite Aid Foundation have announced that more than 550 medication disposal units across the nation are now searchable on Google Maps, making it easier for people to safely dispose of unneeded or unwanted medications.

To find a safe medication disposal unit in a Rite Aid store or a KidCents Safe Medication Disposal Unit in a local police station or law enforcement agency, users can search on Google (including Google Maps on a browser or mobile device) for “medication disposal near me.� Google will show results with the closest Rite Aid medication disposal units for people to safely dispose of their unwanted prescription drugs.

The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug

abuse and misuse. In 2017, The Rite Aid Foundation launched the KidCents Safe Medication Disposal program. The program provides law enforcement agencies in communities served by Rite Aid with free medication disposal units for individuals to safely dispose of expired or unwanted medications. Since its launch, the program has expanded to 18 states.

To date, the foundation has partnered with more than 400 law enforcement agencies to make more than 450 units available to customers and communities.

In 2018, Rite Aid announced plans to install 100 medication disposal units in stores across the country.

Developed by EVERFI, the course uses an evidence-based public health approach to empower high school students with the skills and knowledge they need to make safe and healthy decisions about prescription drugs and prevent abuse before it occurs. As a result of The Rite Aid Foundation’s commitment, the Prescription Drug Safety program will be made available to more than 400 high schools in California, Michigan, Ohio, Oregon, Pennsylvania, Virginia, and Washington at no cost.

Rite Aid also has several in-store initiatives to help address the growing epidemic of prescription drug abuse and misuse. Rite Aid offers DisposeRx packets at all its pharmacies. DisposeRx packets contain a biodegradable powder that, when mixed with water in the prescription vial, dissolves drugs, forming a viscous gel that may be safely discarded in the trash. Rite Aid pharmacists also strive to collaborate on appropriate pain management therapy decisions with patients’ prescribers. All patients with new opioid prescriptions receive required counseling on their prescriptions. Rite Aid also participates in prescription drug monitoring programs and provides ongoing education and training about prescription drug misuse and abuse to its more than 5,000 pharmacists. Giant Food Stores has announced that Giant Direct, Powered by Peapod, is now available at 100 Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, under the Martin’s Direct banner, across four states.

Giant Direct is Giant Food Stores’ online grocery service that offers pickup and delivery.

Giant Food Stores president Nicholas Bertram and store manager Tim Dinsmore celebrated the opening of the 100th store to offer Giant Direct with a ribbon-cutting ceremony on July 12 at the Giant store located at 255 S. Spring Garden St., Carlisle. In celebration of this e-commerce achievement, Giant presented a $1,000 donation to Project SHARE, a Carlisle-based organization that provides groceries and other essentials to more than 1,000 local families in need each month.

Giant introduced Giant Direct earlier this year to accelerate the company’s e-commerce strategy. In February, the company opened a 38,000-square-foot Giant Direct e-commerce hub in Lancaster that serves as a central shipping location for online delivery orders in the region. The hub also permits customers to place orders on-site via electronic tablets allowing for pedestrian pickup as well as the traditional car curbside pickup.

The e-commerce effort has continued over the past five months, as Giant has added Giant Direct to stores across its network. Giant Direct provides customers with a wide assortment of products with the same quality and service available from local Giant stores and Martin’s Food Markets, now combined

Caregiver Support Group Sets Meeting

Senior Commons at Powder Mill will host an Alzheimer’s disease and dementia caregiver support group meeting on Thursday, July 25, at 5:30 p.m.

Senior Commons’ memory care director, Denise Wible, will facilitate an open discussion, including information on how to prevent caregiver burnout and whom to contact for help. Attendees may bring their questions.

Refreshments will be available.

Donations to the Alzheimer’s Association will be accepted.

This event is free and open to the public. Reservations are appreciated and can be made by calling 717-741-0961.
