WYASD Announces Staffing Selections

Todd Davies (right), superintendent of schools, welcomed Ivan Quinones as the West York Area School District’s new school safety and security coordinator.

The West York Area School District (WYASD) board of directors has named Heather Hossler as the new assistant director of special education and pupil services and Ivan Quinones as the new school safety and security coordinator. The selections were approved at the June 18 board meeting.

Hossler will work with Traci Stauffer, director of special education and pupil services, in coordinating the district’s special education program, fulfilling the needs of students according to district policy and government regulations.

Hossler holds a Bachelor of Science degree in special education from East Tennessee State University and a Master of Science degree in educational administration from McDaniel College. In addition to having served on the IU 12 Special Education Advisory Council, she has completed several professional training sessions, including the Olweus Bully Prevention Program, Safe Crisis Management Instructor Training, and trainings related to attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder, Asperger’s syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, and Tourette’s syndrome.

Lions Club Awards Scholarships The York New Salem Lions Club, District 14-C, awarded scholarships to Lauren Guise and Cambrya Anderson at the club’s May 8 meeting. Both are 2019 graduates of Spring Grove Area High School.

Lauren will continue her education at York College of Pennsylvania, where she will study nursing. Cambrya will attend Liberty University in Lynchburg, Va., to study either nursing or physical therapy.

The York New Salem Lions Club Memorial Scholarship program was established in 1980. As of 2019, the club has awarded a total of $68,900 in 73 scholarships. A “Summer Nights” ballroom dance social will be held on Sunday, July 21, at Alert Fire Hall, 3118 N. George St., Emigsville. The event is sponsored by York USA Dance Chapter 3008 and is open to dancers of all ages, styles and experience levels.

Featured this month will be a “Grease Medley” couples formation dance demonstration performed by members

of PA DanceSport of Hummelstown.

A night club two-step lesson will be taught by Keith Stremmel from 3 to 4 p.m. for beginning and intermediate dancers. Upstart Arts To Perform Shakespeare Comedy The Upstart Twilight Theatre (TUTT) will visit York County parks to present Shakespeare’s “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.”

TUTT is the touring branch of Upstart Arts. Performing arts in public spaces is its mission. The all-volunteer nonprofit theater collective is led by Michelle Denise Norton, who has a 22year history of taking Shakespeare’s comedies to local parks.

On Friday, July 26, September House will show the film “Sight & Sound Presents Jonah” from 1 to 3 p.m. This is a film of the live play at Sight & Sound Theatres.

The Fit N Fun exercise program is offered daily from 10 to 10:30 a.m. On Wednesdays, there are dancing classes, with exercise games on Fridays. Other activities include the Healthy Steps routine for balance and strength and HasFit and Growing Young routines for cardio and general health benefits.

The senior center also offers a Tang Soo Do class.

Games are played throughout the week. Bingo is played on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m., with the first card free, and on Wednesdays for all cash as a fundraiser, with doors opening at 5 p.m. and bingo starting at 6:30 p.m. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available. In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

There is no cost to participate. Advance registration is preferred but not necessary.

York Teachers Receive Funds SONIC Drive-In recently recognized teachers and the contributions they make to education as a part of its Limeades for Learning initiative in partnership with nonprofit partner DonorChoose.org.

With the goal of helping teachers obtain classroom supplies and learning resources, SONIC launched a donation match in honor of Teacher Appreciation Month in May and gave $1,281 to two teachers in York.

In total, SONIC donated $1.2 million matching donations made to SONIC teacher projects in May. SONIC rewarded two entrepreneurial teacher-lead projects at Central York Middle School. Funds were awarded to Brian Heisey for the project

“STEM With Drones” and to Jennifer Brown for the project “Accommodating Comfortable Classroom Collaboration.”

Since 2009, SONIC has donated $13.1 million, supported 33,177 classrooms, and provided learning materials and teaching resources requested by teachers to impact 995,310 students in partnership with DonorChoose.org. made a meaningful, sustainable change to her community and the world. McMaster earned the award during her senior year at Spring Grove Area High School.

McMaster combined her passion for art with her desire to increase awareness for mental health by painting encouraging, uplifting murals on the walls of the youth group area and common areas at her church, St. Paul Lutheran Church in Spring Grove. The murals will be displayed for viewing by the many members of the community that use the church, including Girl Scout troops, Boy Scout troops, the church youth group, and other community groups.

To educate the community, McMaster created pamphlets that include suicide risk factors,

warning signs, stress triggers, how to handle stress, how to help someone in a crisis, and contact information for local and national suicide help centers. In addition, McMaster planned to host an open house at the church in late May to present her project and explain her hopes and goals for the continued success of the project and to further raise awareness about mental health and suicide prevention.

Girl Scouts in the Heart of Pennsylvania provides programs to more than 17,500 girls across 30 counties in central and northeastern Pennsylvania. The organization’s mission and long-term goal is to build girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place.

The second annual Susquehanna Folk Festival will take place from Friday to Sunday, July 26 to 28, at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Road, Lewisberry.

Hours will be 7:30 to 10:30 p.m. on July 26; 10 a.m. to midnight on Saturday, July 27; and 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on July 28. The festival is rain or shine, as all seating areas are indoors or under a tent.

An Emerging Artist Showcase will feature up-and-coming performers plus local and regional artists including Neidig, Koretzky, Gehret & Campbell, Bluestone, Irish Blessing, Michael Arthur, Shane Speal and the Snakes, Justin Angelo Band, and Debbi Kauffmann.

Activities for children and their families will include Spiral Q Puppet Theater, The Give and Take Jugglers, storytelling workshops with Bil Lepp, a sing-along with KLMN-tine, and crafts provided by York County Libraries.

Quinones holds a bachelor’s degree in criminal justice from the University of Maryland and is pursuing a Master of Science degree in public safety and administration from Arizona State University. He served in the United States Marine Corps for four years prior to his career as commander with the Maryland State Police. Most recently, Quinones served as the director of public safety and security for all of the campuses of HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. Other notable accomplishments include work as an instructor for law enforcement, his role as an adviser to legislators regarding the development of Act 44, and his involvement with the Pennsylvania Safety Task Force.
