The York Hiking Club will offer a variety of hikes throughout York County and the surrounding region. Nominal carpool fees may apply. Church To Hold “Babylon” VBS

St. James Lutheran Church, 25 N. Adams St., York, will present “Babylon - Daniel’s Courage in Captivity” vacation Bible school (VBS) from Sunday, July 8, through Thursday, July 12, from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

A history-centered, 3-mile hike on Sunday, July 15, will take place at the historic York Iron Mine Company site at P. Joseph Raab Park, 2600 Hoff Road, Seven Valleys. Participants will hike around the old mining pits, look at the mine openings, climb approximately 700 feet in elevation, and walk about one-eighth mile down a stream. They should wear long pants, waterproof boots and bug spray. An easy, 8.5-mile hike will take place on Sunday, July 22, at the Swatara State Park rail trail. Hikers

Knitters’ Guild Fire Company Posts Schedule Sets Breakfast The Colonial York Knitters’ Guild meets on the second and fourth Wednesdays of each month at 10 a.m. at Adams Electric Company on Route 616, off Route 30 West. The guild will observe its summer schedule, which includes just one meeting - on the first Wednesday of the month - in July and August.

The club will then meet on Wednesday, Sept. 12.

Goodwill Fire Company No. 1, Station 18, located at 1 S. Main St., Jacobus, will host an all-youcan-eat breakfast on Sunday, July 8, from 8 to 11 a.m. Separate fees have been set for adults and for children ages 2 to 12. Children under age 2 may eat for free.

Breakfast will include bacon, sausage, scrambled eggs, pancakes, French toast, potatoes, creamed chipped beef, sausage gravy, toast, and biscuits. Available beverages will be coffee, tea, milk, orange juice/drink, and chocolate milk.

The Garden Club of York (GCY) recently presented $1,000 scholarships to York County students Mitchell Grove, Daniel Rohrbaugh and Andrew Schott. To be eligible for scholarships from the club, students must take college courses in biology and its related fields, such as horticulture, landscape architecture, conservation, forestry, agronomy, plant pathology, environmental studies, land management, and wildlife sciences. Students may apply for the Garden Club Scholarships all four years of their college career.

Grove is an Iowa State University sophomore majoring in agricultural engineering. He graduated from Red Lion Area High School. This is the third scholarship he has received from the GCY. He has also received a $1,000 scholarship

this year from the state garden club. This summer, Grove plans to shadow a Penn State Extension agricultural engineer.

Rohrbaugh is a graduate of Susquehannock High School. He plans to attend Kansas State University to study agricultural business. He is an active member of the Pennsylvania Junior Angus Association and was instrumental in encouraging the state secretary of agriculture to declare Angus Week in Pennsylvania. Rohrbaugh is a fourthgeneration Angus breeder.

Schott is a graduate from Southwestern High School in Hanover. He studies environmental science and biology at Messiah College. This summer, he plans to work on 4-H projects and stream restoration.

Schott has also received a $1,000 four-year scholarship from the state garden club.

Support Group Meeting Posted Dover Bethany United Methodist Church, 4510 Bull Road, Dover, will host a dementia and Alzheimer’s support group meeting on Monday, July 9, at 7 p.m.

Individuals interested in learning more about the diseases, as well as those who are caring for loved ones with the diseases, are welcome to attend.

When the outdoors beckons, road trips can be the perfect way to see the countryside, escape the routine of daily life and enjoy short vacations. When taking to the open road, it is important to focus on safety.

The National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) says that planning and prevention can spare road-trippers from the consequences of breakdowns, traffic accidents, or other road emergencies.

It is important to stock emergency preparedness items. Prior to a trip, drivers should make sure their vehicles are equipped with necessary safety items.

Nearly half of Americans do not check that proper emergency items are stored in their vehicles prior to getting on the road.

Before embarking on a road trip, drivers should make sure vehicles have a first aid kit, flashlight, water bottles, phone chargers, tire repair tools, flares,

jumper cables, towels, and even an old backpack for storage.

Drivers should take their cars in for tune-ups before long road trips. Such tune-ups should include an oil change, battery check, tire rotation, and any other necessary servicing.

Drivers should map out the route before heading out.

Drivers should also be aware of potential road closures, obsta-

cles or construction. Thanks to real-time GPS updates through mobile phones and other devices, some drivers like to rely on tech to get them through. But it is important to realize service may be spotty in rural areas. Mapping a trip out in advance can save drivers from getting lost during mobile service interruptions.

include completing a 500-word essay, being a full-time student starting in the summer or fall, and having a high school grade point average of 2.5 or higher.

For undecided students, Central Penn has rolling enrollment and a no-fee application.

In addition, graduating seniors who apply in the late spring and summer are still eligible to receive scholarships offered by the college, if they qualify.

The Foundation for the West York Area School District awarded a total of $32,950 in scholarships to 31 West York Area School District senior students for the 2017-18 year. Scholarship winners were announced during the high school academic awards assembly on May 23.

Money-Saving Travel Tips For Retirees Though a transient lifestyle is something few people aspire to during much of their lives, come retirement, the idea of staying in a place for only a short time has more appeal. According to a 2014 study from the Transamerica Center for Retirement Studies, 36 percent of baby boomers want to spend their retirements traveling.

Many retirees are succeeding in doing just that, as a study from the luxury travel network Virtuoso found that today’s seniors spent an average of just over $11,000 per year on travel.

That was more than any other generation, highlighting just how much older adults like to get out and explore the world.

Retirees who fear they cannot afford to travel can explore the various ways for seniors to cut costs and still satisfy their wanderlust during retirement.

Seniors are encouraged to take advantage of age-related discounts. Some adults prefer to hide their ages, but when it comes time to travel during retirement, honesty is the best policy. Many businesses that

cater to travelers offer discounts to seniors. Car rental agencies, hotels, travel agencies, and cruise lines may offer direct discounts to customers age 65 and older, while membership in organizations such as AAA and AARP may make seniors eligible for additional discounts. Discounts on lodging and airfare might net the biggest savings, but even discounts on various smaller expenses can add up to big savings.

Travel agencies should not be overlooked. While many prospective travelers’ first instincts are now to visit various travel websites in an effort to find the most affordable trips, it is important that travelers not overlook travel agencies when planning trips.

Travel websites, though a valuable resource, only list the hotels and airlines that agree to be included on their sites. While many participate, some do not, and those that do not may instead work independent of travel websites or partner with travel agencies.

York Catholic High School (YCHS) recently announced the accolades of the Class of 2018.

Seventy-four percent of this class of 105 students earned over 11 million dollars in college scholarships. Many received multiple scholarships from universities, businesses, and nonprofit organizations, including full tuition and room and board.

This class will contribute to global society as 96 percent have chosen to continue their education after high school. Another two percent are entering the military, and two percent are entering the workforce.

This class shared 17,768 hours of service to the community volunteering with Leg Up Farm, Ronald McDonald House, and City of York’s Bring on Play, as well as volunteering at fire departments, police departments, hospitals, doctors’ offices, nursing homes, food pantries, animal rescues, and community events.

Scholarship winners are selected based upon demonstrated achievement on standardized exams. Final candidates then have a personal interview with a Scholarship Committee panel. The combination of assessment score and interview determined the scholarship recipients.

YAA Seeks Art Entries Art entries are sought for the 48th annual York Art Association (YAA) Open Juried Exhibition, slated for Sunday, Nov. 4, through Saturday, Dec. 15, at the YAA gallery, 220 S. Marshall St., York.

Cash prizes will be awarded. An opening reception will be held on Nov. 4 from 2 to 4 p.m., and the presentation of awards is slated for 3 p.m.

The entry deadline is Friday, Sept. 21. Registration and entries may be completed at https://yaa.artcall.org. The exhibition is open to all fine artists and is limited to three digital submissions per artist. Separate nonrefundable entry fees have been set for members and for nonmembers. Accepted entries will be received between 9 a.m. and 3 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 26, and between 9 a.m. and noon on Saturday,

Oct. 27. Additional entry guidelines are available on the website.

The exhibition juror will be Amanda Burdan, associate curator of the Brandywine River Museum of Art. She has organized many exhibitions, including the 2016 exhibition “Rural Modern: American Art Beyond the City,” which traveled to the High Museum of Art in Atlanta. Her next exhibition focused on the American Impressionists is slated for display at the San Antonio Museum of Art in 2020. Burdan received her master’s degree and doctorate from Brown University.

The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints in the York and Lancaster areas graduated 19 students during a ceremony on May 27 at 6 p.m. at the Lancaster Stake Center. The students attended early morning seminary classes every day before school from ninth through 12th grades. The high schoolers studied the four standard works of the church: the Bible, the Book of Mormon, the Doctrine and Covenants, and the Pearl of Great Price.

The graduates, listed by ward, are as follows. Lancaster Ward: Ethan Knarr. Lititz Ward: Kimberly Beck, Faith Dryden, Carter Hasson, MacGregor Henrichsen, and Eric Vassilaros. Shrewsbury Ward: Paul Abramson, Sadie Ann Bowman, Amanda Buckheit, and Benjamin Ward. West York Ward: Morganne Browning, Aidan Fryar, Sequoia Graver, Alexa Lucas, Ashley Markle, and Bryce Ohl. York Ward: Katelyn Herrin, David Johnson Jr., and Tanner Marchant.

At the graduation ceremony, Ohl gave the opening prayer, and Beck, Marchant, and Markle

delivered messages. The final speaker was Eva Poff, a seminary graduate who now attends the Institute for Young Single Adults.

Additionally, two seminary students performed a special musical number. Abramson sang “One Voice” and Ward played the cello while Abramson’s mother, Teri Sue Abramson, accompanied them on the piano.

The conclusion to the ceremony was the recognition of students and the awarding of certificates of completion. Adam M. McBride, regional coordinator of the seminary and Institute programs, presented the graduates to the Stake president, Conrad Knudson. The diplomas and certificates were presented to the graduates. Knudson concluded with words of encouragement for the graduating youths. Dryden said the closing prayer.

Many of the graduates will choose to go on and serve a mission for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. One of the aims of the seminary program is to give youths experience in teaching the Gospel.

Liz Mojica

MarChere’e Jones and Liz Mojica have been promoted from their positions in the Intellectual Disability (ID) Residential Services at Bell Socialization Services.

Jones was promoted in the ID department from her position as an assistant program coordinator to the role of residential program coordinator.

Jones worked for Bell previously as a residential program supervisor at Valley Road for about seven years and left in 2009. She returned to Bell in May of 2017.

Mojica was promoted in the ID department from her position as a client advocate to the

role of program specialist. In her new role, Mojica will oversee, supervise, and support five residential group homes and monitoring the health and safety of the individuals.

Mojica has been with the agency for nine years and has served in the roles of residential service worker, residential supervisor, and client advocate for the ID department.

Bell Socialization Services Inc. is a 501(c)(3) human services agency based in York that provides housing and living skills supports to individuals living with mental illness, people with intellectual disabilities, and homeless families.

The Foundation for the West York Area School District recently recognized York Container Company as a major contributor to the foundation for the 2016-17 year with a dedication plaque outside of the technology-enhanced classroom made possible by the company’s donation, which was made through the Pennsylvania Educational Improvement Tax Credit Program (EITC). The classroom is located in the West York Area High School. Present for the dedication were (from left) foundation president Amy Bortner; Bill Ludwig, chief financial officer of York Container Company and foundation board member; and Carrie Jones, high school assistant principal.

Leadership York has named Rob Berkebile as the Outstanding Alumnus of the Year. He was recognized at the Leadership Training Program and Executive Connections graduation event on May 16. Each year, the program recognizes an outstanding graduate for his or her contributions to the greater good in the community.

Berkebile is a partner in RKL’s Tax Services Group. His volunteer service includes York County Convention and Visitors Bureau, York Young Revolution, and United Way of York County. He is a 1992 graduate of Leadership York’s Leadership Training Program.

The Outstanding Alumnus of the Year selection committee consists of past recipients of Leadership York’s Alumnus of the Year award and Leadership York staff.

YWCA To Offer Free Training YWCA York’s ACCESS and Victim Assistance Center has created a new program, Beyond the Bar, designed to educate bar staff and patrons on how to prevent customers from becoming potential sexual assault victims. The program works to provide York bars

and restaurants with properly trained staff.

The training is free and hopes to provide ongoing staff support.

Upon completion, the location will receive a certificate and other material to reference that sexual assault or harassment will

not be tolerated inside the venue.
