Hospitals Receive Awards WellSpan Health announced that it and six of its hospitals were named 2018 award recipients through the Hospital and Healthsystem Association of Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge.

The goal is to increase promotion and awareness of organ, eye, and tissue donations. A single donor can save eight lives and positively impact more than 100 more through tissue donation, according to the American Transplant Foundation.

WellSpan York Hospital earned the Titanium Award.

WellSpan Ephrata Community

Hospital, WellSpan Gettysburg Hospital, WellSpan Good Samaritan Hospital, and WellSpan Surgery and Rehabilitation Hospital earned Platinum Awards.

Chambersburg Hospital earned the Gold Award. Overall, WellSpan Health received the health system Platinum Award by the Donate Life Hospital Challenge.

WellSpan is a part of the Pennsylvania Donate Life Hospital Challenge each year in partnership with the Pennsylvania Department of Health, the Center for Organ Recovery and Education, and the Gift of Life Donor Program.

Diocese Of Harrisburg Honors Faculty Seven local Catholic school teachers and administrators from Catholic schools in the Diocese of Harrisburg were recently honored with the Golden Apple Award. The award commends the educator’s professional excellence, leadership, commitment to Catholic values, and devotion to teaching in Catholic schools.

In addition, Jennifer Burke, granddaughter of New Cumberland artist Charley Krone and curator of his works, will display black and white prints and watercolor giclee prints of familiar scenes from around New Cumberland and central Pennsylvania.

Works will include local landmarks and landscapes. The prints will be displayed in the first-floor showcase during the month of June.

The Belmont Theatre, 27 S. Belmont St., York, will present Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” on the main stage on Friday to Sunday, June 14 to 16, and Thursday to Sunday, June 20 to 23. Thursday, Friday and Saturday shows will begin at 7:30 p.m., and Sunday shows will start at 3 p.m.

When Lerner and Loewe’s “My Fair Lady” opened on Broadway, it collected six Tony Awards, including Best Musical, and the film version later took home eight Oscars, including Best Picture. The show is based on George Bernard Shaw ’s play “Pygmalion.” The score includes “With a Little Bit of Luck,” “The Rain in Spain,” “I Could Have Danced All Night,” “On the Street Where You Live,” “Get Me to the Church on Time,” “I’ve Grown Accustomed to Her Face,” and “Wouldn’t It Be Loverly?” The set features a two-story study that includes a library on the second floor, and the costumes worn in

the “Ascot Gavotte” number include the enormous hats that were in vogue in 1912.

“My Fair Lady” is directed

by The Belmont Theatre’s artistic director, Rene Staub.

Music direction is by Abigail Kirkpatrick, and choreography is by Sarah Flynn. The musical features a live orchestra. The cast includes Lilly Gorski as Eliza Doolittle, Jeffrey Gilbert as Henry Higgins, Thomas DiMaggio as Colonel Pickering, Drew Derreth as Mr. Doolittle, Vincent Beck as Freddy Eynsford Hill, Sheryl Rade as Mrs. Pearce, and an ensemble of tech dancers and vocalists.

Art Exhibition Welcomes Entries York Art Association is seeking entries for its 49th annual Open Juried Exhibition, which will run from Sunday, Nov. 3, through Saturday, Dec. 14.

Creature Features Program Slated York County Department of Parks and Recreation will host a series of Creature Features at Nixon County Park, 5922 Nixon Drive, York. The program will be offered on Thursdays, June 13 and 20 and July 11 to 25. There will be two

sessions each day, 9:30 to 10 a.m. and 11 to 11:30 a.m.

Teen volunteers will explore a different creature each week and will discuss behavior, natural history, and fun facts using photos, props, and artifacts. The

program is best suited for children age 5 and older.

open to caregivers and those who are pre-diabetic or who have a family history of diabetes. Registration is requested.

The senior center will continue its annual “Ask the Nurse” health programs presented by nursing students and their instructors from HACC, Central Pennsylvania’s Community College. The programs include question-and-answer times. The dates, times and topics are as follows: Tuesday, June 25, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., “Mental Health How to Forgive”; Monday, July 1, from 4 to 5:30 p.m., “Diabetes and Nutrition - Sample Diets and Recipes”; Tuesday, July 2, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., “Memory Enhancements - When and How”; and Tuesday, July 16, from 2 to 3:30 p.m., “Back Injuries/Pain Management.” Free blood pressure testing will be available at the programs. Reservations are requested but not required, and these programs are open to people of all ages.

On weekdays, free lunch is served to any York County resident at least 60 years of age.

Libraries Launch Photo Challenge York County Libraries has launched the #YCLdiscover photo challenge. Through Friday, June 21, residents age 18 and older are encouraged to take creative photos with large props located at three library locations and share them on Facebook and Instagram.

In Red Lion and Hellam, giant Adirondack chairs sit outside of Kaltreider-Benfer Library and Kreutz Creek Library. In downtown York, there is a large selfie backdrop in the Martin Library atrium and sidewalk decals lining the pavement outside. To enter the contest, participants may create a photo using one of the library props and share publicly with the tags #YCLdiscover and #YCLphoto.

The 19th annual Penn-Mar Irish Festival will return to The Markets at Shrewsbury, 12025 Susquehanna Trail, Glen Rock, on Saturday, June 15, for a full day of Irish entertainment, shopping, food, and fun. The event will run from 10:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.

The festival will feature traditional and contemporary live Irish music and dancers from Pennsylvania and Maryland, along with special guests, Irish food, children’s activities, and workshops. KBS is an educational program which has been conducted annually in Pennsylvania since 1937. Its purpose is to help attendees understand the American system of government, appreciate the responsibilities of citizenship, and know the fundamental principles of leadership.

learn about city, county, and state government by participating in simulations where they operate the agencies and levels of local governments in Pennsylvania themselves. At KBS 2019, youths will have the opportunity to hear about the Travis Manion Foundation and its vision to create a nation of purpose-driven individuals and thriving communities that is built on character. Participants will also attend a college fair with more than 30 colleges and universities represented; actively participate in a labor negotiation simulation on behalf of one of four parties in the pact; hear about leadership from Dr. John J. Bell, superintendent of the Delaware Valley School District and a national speaker; and compete for Samsung American Legion Scholarships.

Those chosen to attend KBS are high school juniors who are selected based on individual qualities such as character and school and community involvement and who express an interest

in leadership and government.

Honors, awards, extracurricular activities, employment history, and civic and church involvement are considered in the selection. As part of that process, each candidate was asked to complete an application and was interviewed by members of the post’s Americanism Committee.

This year’s selected students include student-athletes who have earned varsity letters and recognition as League All-Stars.

The students also include Eagle Scouts, musicians, and members of Student Councils, Mock Trial Teams, Team America Rocketry Challenge and National Honor Society chapters. They are volunteers in their community. Many have expressed interest in continuing to serve their communities, state, or nation by pursuing teaching degrees in the sciences, serving as commissioned officers in the military, or serving as public servants.

More than 175 business, health care and community leaders from across York County attended the 2019 York Heart Ball, “Rev Up Your Heart,” on April 27 at the Country Club of York. The event, which had a “Grease” theme, raised nearly $200,000 for the American Heart Association, a voluntary health organization focused on heart and brain health.

Television news anchor Amy Lutz hosted the evening’s festivities, which included silent and live auctions, dinner and dancing.

The American Heart Association, York Division, presented its Volunteer of the Year Award to Will Lavery and the Passion Award to longtime Heart Ball volunteers Teann Scoggins and Joel Rosenblatt.

The real star of the evening was 2-yearold Bristol Miller of Airville. On March 1, 2018, 14-month-old Bristol was home with her babysitter while her parents, Josh and Leah Miller, were at work. That afternoon, Josh, who is also a local paramedic, received an emergency page for a pediatric cardiac arrest at the babysitter’s address.

He knew immediately it was Bristol. He rushed home, arriving just behind the ambulance, to find responders performing CPR on tiny Bristol. Her babysitter, a former nurse, had also been performing CPR. The responders were able restore a normal heart rhythm, but Bristol continued to need supportive CPR on her way to the hospital.

Bristol spent five weeks in the hospital with other complications, including seizures, infection and a blood clot in her heart. Doctors were not able to determine exactly what caused Bristol’s cardiac arrest, but she received an implantable defibrillator to protect her against future episodes.

She had to relearn to sit, crawl, walk and talk during her rehabilitation, but has since returned to the normal life of a 2-year-old girl. She recently became a big sister.

Funds raised will support the American Heart Association’s mission to be a relentless force for a world of longer, healthier lives through community education, health care quality improvement, investment in lifesaving research and public policy advocacy, including advocating for Senate Bill 114 to ensure all Pennsylvania high school students receive Hands-Only CPR training.
