Early registration has opened for York County Libraries’ 2019 SummerQuest, “A Universe of Stories.”

To register children, readers may visit http://summerquest.york libraries.org. The free program is geared for children from birth to age 18 and will run from Saturday, June 1, to Sunday, Aug. 18. This year’s SummerQuest will explore the universe through hundreds of family-friendly activities. Children only need a free York County Libraries card to participate.

After children are preregistered, they may pick up their SummerQuest packets at one of the three kickoff events on June 1. Children are encouraged to bring their library cards. The kickoff events, featuring free entertainment and activities, will take place from 10 a.m. to noon

at Richard Nixon Park on Nixon Drive in York; Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover; and Dover Township Community Center, 3700 Davidsburg Road, Dover.

Each location will have its own roster of activities. Highlights at Richard Nixon Park will include traveling magician Papa Tater, Jeri Jones and his sun scope, therapy dogs, face painting by Anna Lipinski and York Bubble Lady Debbie Flaum. Guthrie Memorial Library festivities will include a hula hoop demonstration by Lucy Brice at 10:15 a.m. and a demonstration by the Capital City Jedi Knights at 11:15 a.m. In addition, strolling magician Marc Charisse, the Hanover fire and police departments, the York County Sheriff’s Office and

therapy dogs will all be present as part of the event. At the Dover Township Community Center, the celebration will include local author MJ McCloskey, strolling magician Michael Thomas, 911 Command Center and a balloon sculpture.

In addition, community partners, including FOCUS, Safe Kids, GO York! and the Master Watershed Stewards, will be present along with food vendors. All locations will have SummerQuest packets of goodies, information and giveaway drawing tickets ready for pickup. Registration on-site will also be available.

Many local businesses have donated prizes to encourage children to keep reading and to stay active over the summer months.

York Bubble Lady Debbie Flaum will be among the entertainers appearing at York County Libraries’ SummerQuest kickoff celebrations on Saturday, June 1. Children may meet Flaum at the Nixon Park kickoff event.

Event Will Showcase Vintage Vehicles More than 3,000 specialty vehicles will be on hand at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York, from Friday, May 31, through Sunday, June 2, for the 46th annual Street Rod Nationals East. This will be the 39th time the vintage car show has been held in York, and all-time highs for participants and spectaculars are expected. A large part of the York Expo Center will be utilized for the event, as well as most of the buildings, which will house manufacturer and dealer displays and other attractions.

The host organization, National Street Rod Association (NSRA), defines a street rod as a modernized vintage vehicle that must be of pre-1949 manufacture. These vehicles are equipped with the latest options available on the newest model vehicles, including but not limited to

brakes, air conditioning, cruise control, and tilt steering wheels.

Most of the vehicles attending have an updated engine and drive train in order to safely maintain the speeds traveled by more modern vehicles.

The event will also include muscle cars: factory-produced high-horsepower machines from the 1960s, ’70s, and ’80s, along with the classic cars of the 1950s.

The NSRA Street Rod Nationals East will feature a mix of old and new vehicles, and the national gathering will boast a wide variety of vintage automobiles. The event is open to the public, and spectators may walk up to the vehicles to check them out up close. There is an admission fee, which will be discounted for children ages 6 to 12, senior citizens age 60 and up with ID, military

personnel with ID, and NSRA members with a current membership card. Children under age 6 may attend for free.

The event will again include a Pinstripe Jamboree and Charity Auction, during which pinstriping, airbrushing, and hand-lettering artists from around the United States will combine to raise

money for Make-A-Wish. The Street Rod Nationals East will also include games, activities, and live music.

The event will be open from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. on May 31 and on Saturday, June 1, and it will be open from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. on June 2. Additional information is available at www.nsra-usa.com.

Annual Book Sale Slated LifePath Christian Ministries will hold its annual book sale on Friday, May 31, and Saturday, June 1. This year’s sale has a new location and a special early bird session, another new feature. Book sale hours will be from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on May 31 and from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on June 1. Thousands of gently used books will be available for sale in all interest categories.

The sale will take place at a new location this year - York College of Pennsylvania’s Grumbacher Center, 889 S. Richland Ave., York. Ample offstreet parking will be available.

Volunteers will help shoppers carry their purchases to their cars.

An early bird sale will take place from 8 to 10 a.m. on May 31. Early bird tickets must be purchased in order to attend.

Proceeds will support LifePath’s services for those experiencing poverty and homelessness in York County.

Surviving Spouse Socials To Meet Regular meetings of Surviving Spouse Socials are held the first Tuesday of every month except August and December at Faith United Church of Christ, 509 Pacific Ave., York. The next regular meeting will take place on Tuesday, June 4, at 6:30 p.m. Refreshments and games will be available after the meeting.

The purpose of the group is to help those who have been widowed for some time to move on with their lives. All widowed men and women are welcome to attend.

Bloomsburg University, Hackett began his career in banking as a commercial lender and was promoted from junior lending officer to vice president in five years.

Later positions included vice president and private banking relationship manager at Fulton Bank’s Clermont Wealth Strategies and senior private banking officer and vice president at PeoplesBank.

In 2015, Hackett became the chief operating officer with MI-12 Ventures LLC in central Pennsylvania. In this position, he was responsible for the overall management of the investment process. Currently, Hackett is also the managing partner of Aim Advisors LLC, where he has developed strategic relationships with experienced tax and planning organizations, including valuation firms, estate planning practices, and specialty accounting groups in Pennsylvania and Maryland.

Hackett will serve in the capacity of executive-in-residence, a role in which he will mentor and support emerging tech startups seeking early-stage investment from Ben Franklin while also helping to identify second-stage sources of capital for the portfolio’s growth-based companies.

Hackett has deep roots in both the York and entrepreneurial communities. His presence in the York area, as well as the office hours he will have on Wednesday and Thursday afternoons at the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College of Pennsylvania, will help Ben Franklin identify, fund, support, and grow the entrepreneurial pipeline in York and Adams counties.

York Catholic High School’s Chandler Hake (front, center) has committed to study computer science and play lacrosse in the Sunshine State Conference for the Division II Panthers of Florida Institute of Technology in Melbourne, Fla. Hake was a three-year varsity starter for the Fighting Irish lacrosse team and was a member of the 2016 and 2018 YAIAA Lacrosse Championship teams. He was named YAIAA Coaches All-Star Second Team Attack in 2018.

He also played basketball and ran cross-country while at York Catholic and was a member of the 2018 District III-AA Football Championship teams. Louie Castriota, founder and chairman of the board of Leg Up Farm in York, has been awarded the Rite Aid Foundation’s KIDCHAMP Award for his vision and commitment to provide children with special needs a comprehensive, convenient and centralized location to receive specialized therapy.

In recognition of his service, Castriota received a $10,000 donation to Leg Up Farm from the Rite Aid Foundation and gift cards during a special ceremony at Leg Up Farm.

Leg Up Farm is a nonprofit therapy center for infants, children, adolescents and young adults up to the age of 21 with special needs. The center combines a state-of-the-art medical setting with a child-friendly environment that caters to both children and their families. Leg Up Farm provides comprehensive therapies all under one roof by bringing therapists of different specialties together to create customized programs with a team approach.

The foundation created the

KIDCHAMP Award in 2017 to recognize individuals in communities served by Rite Aid. Winners have made a meaningful difference in the lives of youths by advocating for their health and wellbeing, championing education and academic growth and creating safe environments for children and teenagers to live and grow. Castriota is the fifth recipient to receive the award.

Castriota and his wife, Laurie, first had the idea to open Leg Up Farm as a therapeutic riding center in 1997, merging their love of animals and children. Six months after their vision came to fruition, their daughter Brooke was diagnosed with mitochondrial disease, which causes both cognitive and motor function delays.

As they searched for the best treatment options for Brooke, the Castriotas were prompted to significantly widen their vision for Leg Up Farm.

Castriota officially opened Leg Up Farm in 2010, raising more than $10 million in funding through a combination of private

contributions, public fundraising events and federal, state and foundation grants. Leg Up Farm provides physical, occupational, speech, and aquatic therapy; counseling; therapeutic horseback riding; and nutritional, education and recreational programming all under one roof. Since opening its doors, Leg Up Farm has increased capacity. To date, the facility has served more than 2,700 children with special needs and their families. YCAAA Seeks Volunteers The York County Area Agency on Aging (YCAAA) is seeking volunteers for its Friendly Visitor and Financial Counselor programs. There are needs throughout York County.

A volunteer friendly visitor is someone who is willing to share an hour or two each week with a homebound older adult. These visits offer an opportunity for social contact, whether spent reading, writing letters, playing cards or board games, or just chatting.

Financial counselors visit older adults on a regular basis and assist them with budgeting, balancing a

checkbook, paying bills, and other financial functions. Financial counselors work closely with the consumer’s care manager.

There are volunteer opportunities for both men and women age 18 or older who like to help others. No experience is needed. YCAAA provides training for both programs.

Storytelling Contest Slated Recipients celebrated obtaining Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA) Project Stream grants in 2018. Applications for this year’s grants must be postmarked on or before Thursday, June 20.

Ma & Pa Railroad Sets Opening Day The Ma & Pa Railroad Heritage Village will open for its summer season on Sunday, June 2, from 1 to 5 p.m. Trains will depart at 15 minutes after each hour.

The site has recovered from flooding that took place on Aug. 31, 2018. The excursion rail line sustained severe damage due to flood waters, and the storm washed out hundreds of feet of track and a bridge. Two additional bridges along the 3.6-mile line endured substantial damage.

Volunteers and a contractor worked the past eight months clearing the track, making necessary repairs and, in some cases, rebuilding entire sections. All told, the workers restored more than 900 feet of track and bridges.

Visitors this summer will again be able to enjoy the scenic train ride from Muddy Creek Forks to just south of Laurel.

All of the museum’s traditional special events will return, including the Early American Autos Day on Sunday, June 30. Other events include Made in America Tours on Friday and Saturday, June 14 and 15; Mid-Atlantic Milling Days on Saturday and Sunday, June 22 and 23; the Civil War Encampment on Sunday, July 14; the World War I Encampment on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 3 and 4; the World War II Encampment on Saturday and Sunday, Aug. 24 and

25; and Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 28. Fall Foliage Excursions will be offered on Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 19 and 20, and Saturday and Sunday, Oct. 26 and 27. The Christmas City Express program will be offered on Saturdays and Sundays from Nov. 30 to Dec. 15. The village will be open every Sunday through Sept. 1 and also on Labor Day, Monday, Sept. 2.

Two new events appropriate to the village’s early 1900 interpretation period have been added to the schedule. The Old-Fashioned Picnic and Games Day on Sunday, July 28, will feature activities for families. Attendees may compete in a tug-of-war, sack races, croquet, and more. Attendees may bring a picnic lunch or purchase old-fashioned picnic foods at the event.

The Roaring ’20s Dance with Harvest Moon train rides will take

place on Saturday, Sept. 14. The event is designed to be a romantic evening for adults. It will include live music, dancing, and a train ride through the historic Muddy Creek Valley.

On all days the Heritage Village is open, visitors may also stop by the A.M. Grove Store, the mill, and the grain elevator to chat with costumed docents.

The museum highlights the central role the railroad played in every aspect of life in the early 20th century.

The Liars Contest (a contest of tall tales) will take place at the second annual Susquehanna Folk Festival on Sunday, July 28, from 3 to 4:30 p.m. at Roundtop Mountain Resort, 925 Roundtop Mountain Road, Lewisberry.

The contest will be emceed by Bil Lepp, five-time champion of the West Virginia Liars’ Contest.

The Liars Contest is a juried competition. Storytellers must apply and submit a video representative of their work. Ten contestants will be selected to participate in the competition at the festival. Each contestant will receive two complimentary Sunday festival tickets.

At the competition, each contestant will have seven minutes on stage to tell a humorous, family-friendly story. A panel of three expert judges will award cash prizes to the top three liars.

Applications must be submitted by Saturday, June 1.

The Cultural Alliance of York County has announced that the Pennsylvania Partners in the Arts (PPA) Project Stream grant is now open and accepting applications for arts-related projects in Adams, Fulton, Franklin, and York counties. PPA Project Stream is a funding opportunity of the PPA, a regionalized funding program of the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts. The Cultural Alliance administers the program in Adams, Fulton, Franklin, and York counties.

Putting Safety First Tips For Traveling With Pets When Driving With Pets In The Car Many people can recognize the familiar image of a car traveling down the road with the head of a seemingly happy dog hanging out from the front passenger seat. Traveling in such a way may seem harmless, but doing so can be detrimental to both pets and their owners.

According to Paws to Click, a community that aims to inspire pet owners to travel responsibly with their pets, allowing pets to travel in cars without employing a harness poses a significant threat to everyone in the car. The group notes that an unrestrained 75-pound dog will exert about 2,250 pounds of force in a crash in which the car is traveling at just 30 miles per hour. Such force can injure others in the car as well as the pet. In addition, unrestrained pets may challenge first responders in an effort to protect their owners after an

accident has taken place.

It makes sense to harness pets when taking them along in the car. After all, drivers and their passengers wear seat belts, so why not provide the same safety net to pets? But Paws to Click notes that 84 percent of dog owners drive with their dogs in the car without using restraints. This despite the fact that American Veterinary Medical Foundation (AVMF) advises all pet owners to properly restrain their pets before departing on a car trip, no matter how short or long that trip is expected to be.

In addition to properly restraining pets on car trips, pet owners can take several other steps to ensure the safety of their pets when riding in cars: · Don’t take pets along on car trips unless it is absolutely necessary. While it can be fun to

take a pet with you, the AVMF advises pet owners to leave their pets home when possible.

Pet owners whose pets are exhibiting signs of anxiety should try to address the anxiety so pets are comfortable at home alone. · Do not leave pets unattended in cars. A study from the Louisiana Office of Public Health found that temperatures in a dark sedan or a light gray minivan parked on a hot but cloudy day reached higher than 125 F in just 20 minutes.

The study also found that cracking the window in such situations had little effect on the temperature inside the vehicle. On hot days, leave pets at home. Owners who must take their pets with them should never leave them in the car, as temperatures inside vehicles rise quickly, putting pets’ health in jeopardy.

Bringing pets along can reduce the hassle of finding a pet sitter or a boarding service. Traveling with pets in tow also can be enjoyable for the entire family, including pets. Perhaps that is why a recent study from AAA and Best Western International found that more than half of American pet owners take their cats and dogs with them when they travel.

Traveling with pets can be fun, but it means taking some extra steps when planning a trip to ensure pets are safe and content. Before hitting the road or soaring into the sky, pet owners should consider the following tips: · Acclimate the pet to the car. Conduct a trial run with your pet in tow to gauge how it handles a car ride. Start with shorter trips and build up. Assess how the pet reacts so you can make adjustments if necessary. · Get a wellness check. Visit

the vet prior to departing, particularly if you will be traveling far or abroad. Pack an updated copy of health and immunization records, as well as proof of ownership of the pet. Some countries require pet passports. Investigate if the destination country requires quarantine of the animal. · Buy a quality pet carrier.

Be sure to have a secure and comfortable pet carrier for your dog, cat, or small animal.

This can make travel safer for the animal. If flying, you may need to purchase an airlineapproved crate. Mark the crate with identification information and contact numbers. · Pack a pet-friendly kit. The American Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (ASPCA) suggests bringing along food, a bowl, a leash, a waste scoop, plastic bags, grooming supplies, medication and first aid, and any travel documents. Pack a favorite toy or pillow. Bring along bottled water as well. Drinking unfamiliar water can upset pets’ stomachs.

· Book direct flights. A direct flight reduces the likelihood a pet will be kept on the tarmac or spend even longer times in the baggage hold of the plane. A pets-only airline might be a good choice as well.

For example, Pet Airways offers climate-controlled cabins outfitted with individual crates, and a flight attendant checks on the animals every 15 minutes. After landing, pets are given a bathroom break. · Reserve pet-friendly lodging. Many hotel and motel chains now offer pet accommodations, and some provide pet-friendly rooms. There may be specific requirements, such as restricting the pet to a crate when unattended. · Make sure microchip data is current. Log into the service that coordinates with the pet’s microchip. Check to see that your address and phone number are current. Consider adding temporary travel contact data so the pet can be reunited with you if it gets lost at your destination.
