Team Meghan will hold the Cancer Warriors Photo Shoot on Saturday, May 11, from 3 to 6 p.m. at Gifford Pinchot State Park, located on Rosstown Road near Lewisberry.

Individuals currently battling cancer, as well as cancer survivors, are invited to visit the park to have their pictures taken professionally. The event is an opportunity for those struggling with the impact of cancer to feel good about themselves and enjoy a spring day on the 2,000-plus acres of Gifford Pinchot State Park.

This event is free and includes professional pictures, professional makeup application, and catering. Preregistration is requested and can be done at www.teammeghan.org. Additional event details are also available on this website.

The Meghan M. Johnson Memorial Scholarship Fund is a

501(c)(3) nonprofit organization based in Elizabethtown. It was created in the spring of 2018 with the mission to provide scholarships to high school seniors who intend to pursue higher education in the arts. The fund is named for Meghan Marie Johnson, a 2017 graduate of Lower Dauphin High School who died at the age of 18 on Nov. 21, 2017, after a two-year battle with Stage 4 glioblastoma brain cancer. Meghan had been active in her high school drama club and theater program, as well as several community theaters.

The organization launched www.imdoinit.org in the fall of 2018, and through a fundraising partnership with UPMC Hillman Cancer Center in Pittsburgh, the website raises money for glioblastoma brain cancer research and awareness. All donations received by www.imdoinit.org go directly to the University of Pittsburgh.

A new program, Camp Meghan, will launch at Lower Dauphin Middle School in Hummelstown in August. The one-day camp for eighth-grade boys and girls will feature a professional curriculum-based program that

will focus on anxiety and depression in teenagers. The program will be provided in partnership with Lower Dauphin Communities That Care.

Team Meghan is the fundraising division for the Meghan M. Johnson Memorial

Scholarship Fund, imdoinit.org, and Camp Meghan. The Team Meghan 3K Walk/Run in Hershey, a community yard sale, and the Cancer Warriors Photo Shoot are a few of Team Meghan’s events. Team Meghan is active on social media.

Union Fire and Hose Company No. 1, 30 E. Canal St., Dover, has posted its upcoming events.

The fire company will hold a meat drawing on Friday, May 10. Doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the meat drawing will start at 7 p.m. Meat prizes will be from a Wellsville business.

Olde York Street Fair Planned The 44th annual Olde York Street Fair will be held in and around Continental Square in downtown York on Sunday, May 12, from 12:30 to 6 p.m. All are invited to attend this free event.

Approximately 100 craft vendors will feature handmade gift items for sale, and several crafters will be customizing items.

Food vendors will sell traditional American festival food as well as original creations. All food vendors are partnered with a nonprofit organization and have agreed to donate a portion of their sales to that partner. Farm Show milkshakes will be back.

New this year will be a snow cone vendor with a human-powered frozen beverage machine.

A Kids Fun Block will feature a variety of inflatables, a petting zoo, games, face painting, spin art, sand art, and more. Entomologist Ryan Bridge (“The Bug Man”) will again have his collection on display for everyone to

see and touch. Live entertainment in a variety of genres and strolling performers will be featured, and several “rest stop seating” areas will be located throughout the fair.

HACC York Campus will again provide free secure parking, and three shuttle buses will transport attendees to and from the fair.

The first bus will leave the campus at noon, and buses will travel back and forth continuously all day; the last bus will leave the fair at 6 p.m.

The York County Heritage Trust’s Colonial Complex will also be open during the fair.

Inside the Historical Society Museum, the auxiliary’s ice cream parlor will be open.

New activities include a canasta group that meets on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m. A Fit N Fun group featuring active games or dance lessons meets on Wednesdays at 10 a.m. A fitness room is open during business hours, and opportunities to learn how to use the equipment will be available on Tuesdays and Thursdays at 2 p.m.

The amateur (ham) radio group has expanded and is operating a fully functional station.

Classes will allow participants to study for the technician’s license on that date from 1 to 2 p.m. and the general license on from 2 to 3 p.m. All are welcome to observe and/or participate.

Project Linus of York will meet on Saturday, May 11, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Fourth United Methodist Church, 20 N. Lehman St., York. Project Linus is a volunteer nonprofit organization that creates new, handmade blankets and afghans for children who are seriously ill, traumatized, or otherwise in need.

News Posted For Vietnam Veterans On Jan. 29, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit extended the presumption of exposure to herbicides to cover veterans who served in the territorial sea of the Republic of Vietnam. The definition of “served in the Republic of Vietnam” now extends to 12 nautical miles off the coast of Vietnam. On March 26, the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs decided not to appeal the ruling and took action to begin processing claims within this mandate.

There could be as many as

3,000 veterans and surviving spouses in York County who could be affected by this landmark court ruling. The presumptive conditions for exposure to herbicides used in Vietnam are diabetes mellitus Type 2, prostate cancer, respiratory cancers, Hodgkin’s disease, non-Hodgkin’s lymphoma, ischemic heart disease (including coronary artery disease), chronic B-cell leukemia, chloracne, AL amyloidosis, multiple myeloma, Parkinson’s disease, earlyonset peripheral neuropathy,

The students gathered to hear a presentation by Miss Pennsylvania, Kayla Repasky. The students also prepared blankets to donate to Project Linus as an act of kindness as part of the 10,000 Acts of Kindness Campaign in York.

The nearly 500 students from the three York Deanery Schools prepared 20 blankets that will be donated to the local York Project Linus. These blankets will be given to children who are terminally ill, who have experienced traumas, or who are in need of a blanket.

Repasky’s personal platform is Think First America, a 501(c)(3) nonprofit organization that presents “Think Before You Post” and “Think First, Be Kind” programs.

“Think Before You Post,” for students of all ages, teaches attendees how large the internet is, how to utilize social media, and the importance of being kind on the internet.

“Think First, Be Kind” teaches students character traits of kindness and respect, as well as how to recognize bullying and what actions to take if bullying occurs.

St. Joseph School in York is an educational community, with Jesus as its cornerstone.

The school seeks to educate the whole child through academic excellence and faith preparation through the Roman Catholic tradition to enable students to serve as disciples of Christ in the global world.

College Selects Commencement Speaker Retired Air Force Lt. Gen. Michelle D. Johnson, senior vice president and head of referee operations at the National Basketball Association (NBA), will offer York College’s commencement address on Saturday, May 18. The ceremony will begin at 10:15 a.m. on the campus lawn.

Johnson directs the NBA’s officiating program with responsibility for the recruitment, training, development and evaluation of all referees. She joined the NBA in October 2017 after serving with distinction in various Air Force assignments.

A command pilot with more than 3,600 flight hours, Johnson was the Air Force aide to Presidents George H.W. Bush and Bill Clinton from 1992 to 1994. She also served as the Air Force’s director of public affairs, the deputy director for information and cyberspace policy on the Joint Staff, and NATO’s deputy chief of

staff for operations and intelligence, among other positions.

Most recently, she spent four years as the Air Force Academy’s 19th superintendent - the first woman to hold the position, which is equivalent to college president.

Upon retirement in August, Johnson received the Distinguished Service Medal for exceptionally meritorious service to the government in a duty of great responsibility.

Johnson is a distinguished 1981 graduate of the Air Force Academy.

She was a three-time basketball team captain, the second-leading scorer in school history, and the first woman inducted into the Air Force Sports Hall of Fame. Her career scoring average of 17.6 points per game is the highest in school history.

Additionally, Johnson was the Air Force’s first female cadet wing commander, first female Rhodes Scholar, and first female

Michelle D. Johnson inductee into the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Academic All-America Hall of Fame. She is now on the selection committee for the CoSIDA Academic All-America Hall of Fame.

ACS Celebrates Daffodil Days The American Cancer Society (ACS) welcomed spring on March 20 with its annual Daffodil Days flower sale. The Cultural Alliance of York County has hired Rita Whitney as its new director of communications and community engagement. In this role, which she began March 4, Whitney is responsible for creating and maintaining the connection of the Cultural Alliance to the artists and organizations it serves through all sources of communication.

Whitney comes to the Cultural Alliance with a diverse background in serving the arts community of York over the last 10 years. Prior to stepping into this position, she split her time as owner/operator of Prime Art Supply and as a teaching artist with the Cultural Alliance Arts in Education program.

She is a 2010 fine arts graduate of York College of Pennsylvania and was the recipient of the first Appell Arts Fellowship in 2012, which solidified her

love of and commitment to York and its artist community.

In addition to her time spent as a fine artist/painter, Whitney has eight years of nonprofit experience as a founding board member of the Parliament Arts Organization and the Mount Gretna School of Art, as well as a program committee member for Creative York. She has worked with a wide range of organizations to provide opportunities to artists and to bring public art projects to life. She has worked with Bring On Play, Inclusive Arts Movement, Artists University, the York City Bureau of Health, Parkway Housing Community, the Girl Scouts of America, and Bell Socialization.

YorVoice, a singing competition/ talent showcase event, highlights the talent of York County and features a celebrity panel of judges. Proceeds benefit the Cultural Alliance’s annual campaign. This year’s YorVoice event was held on March 30 and featured 10 teams of musicians performing in front of a record audience of 1,100 spectators.

The People’s Choice Award was awarded in a landslide to Teagan Tatcher, who brought in 2,847 votes, in part by unlocking a $1,000 match challenge offered to the teams. Collectively, the 10 teams brought in 8,205 People’s Choice votes, helping to raise $8,205 for the Cultural Alliance’s 2019 annual campaign.

Judges also crowned Jeanette Parker, who performed “Last Dance” by Donna Summer, as the YorVoice runner-up in a close competition.

The YorVoice mission is to inspire York pride, celebrate the arts and their impact on the community, highlight local talent, and raise awareness for the annual campaign.
