Healthy Steps Program Planned

WESTERN YORK COUNTY

The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer Healthy Steps for Older Adults, an evidencebased program that aims to reduce fall risks among older adults age 60 and older by raising awareness about the causes of falls and how to prevent them.

The free workshop is a two-day program, held for two hours each day, and it is designed to be fun, social, and validating.

The senior center also offers cards and games throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 500 bid is played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the bridge club

meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available. In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

Bingo is played on Mondays and Thursdays at 12:45 p.m. The first card is free. On Wednesdays starting at 6:30 p.m., bingo is played for cash as a fundraiser; doors open at 5 p.m.

The next Seven Mountains Bluegrass Association (SMBA) concert will feature Big Country Bluegrass on Saturday, April 13, at 7 p.m.

Husband and wife Tommy and Theresa Sells formed the band in 1987. All band members live in or near the Virginia-Carolina Blue Ridge. The group performs

hard-driving bluegrass music that comes from this region, which is part of the Crooked Road Musical Trail.

SMBA concerts are held at the Goodwill Fire Company social hall, which is located at 2318 S. Queen St., York. The doors will open at 5:30 p.m. The kitchen will be open and operated by the

Goodwill Volunteer firefighters and Ladies Auxiliary members.

There is a separate charge for food in addition to the tickets for the show. The concert will be a smoke-free and no-alcohol event.

SMBA members will receive a discount on the price of tickets.

To join SMBA, there is an annual

membership fee per family.

Singers To Give Spring Concerts The Cumberland Singers, a community chorus with a history of more than 40 years, will present its spring concerts on Saturday, April 13; Sunday, April 14; and Monday, April 15, in New Cumberland, Enola and Shepherdstown. The composer is Harold Plant, the Singers’ accompanist. Robin will also join Josh Hartranft on bass and Kathy Lubbers on drums/percussion for several of the choral pieces. St. John Slates Easter Luncheon On Easter Sunday, April 21, St. John Episcopal Church, 140 N. Beaver St., York, will host a free Easter luncheon for individuals and families in the York area who otherwise might not have the opportunity to celebrate the Easter holiday with a hot meal.

The luncheon is open to everyone, especially those who may be shelter-bound, homeless or living

alone. It will be served in the parish hall from 12:30 to 2 p.m. and will feature ham with all the fixings, beverages, desserts and Easter treats for children.

All members of any York city or county emergency response team, ambulance team, police force or fire department are also invited to attend. For on-duty emergency and law enforcement

personnel wishing to enjoy the meal, a phone-in-for-pickup service is available.

St. John Episcopal Church, 140 N. Beaver St., York, has welcomed the Rev. Eric Hillegas as the church’s new rector.

Hillegas was ordained to the priesthood in the Episcopal Diocese of Massachusetts on Jan. 10, 2009. He served at St. Chrysostom’s Episcopal Church in Quincy, Mass., from October 2010 to February 2019 and became rector of St. John Episcopal Church in March 2019.

On Sunday mornings, Holy Communion is offered at both the 8 and 10 a.m. services. On Wednesdays at 10 a.m., the Eucharist with Unction for Healing is held in the Appell Chapel.

The church will hold several events during Holy Week.

The event is designed for children from birth through kindergarten.

The York Academy Regional Charter School’s board of trustees met on Feb. 25 and took action to appoint Angela Sugarek to the position of chief executive officer (CEO), effective Monday, July 1. The school’s current CEO, Dr. Dennis Baughman, will retire on Sunday, June 30.

Sugarek earned a Bachelor of Science in history and mathematics from Eastern New Mexico University and a Master of Educational Administration from the University of Texas at Austin. Since 2013, she has served as a principal in the Houston Independent School District, working with International Baccalaureate (IB) programming at the Durham Elementary School and the James Hogg Middle School. She was honored as the Texas PTA Elementary Principal of the Year in 2015. She said she is enthusastic about relationship and community building, working with data, forming pathways to academic excellence and supporting her faculty.

PennCares Support Services, formerly known as United Cerebral Palsy of South Central PA, has been a recognizable and trusted community-based organization for over a half a century, serving a full diversity of people throughout southcentral Pennsylvania from the very young to the very old.

PennCares provides three services: 1) In-home support for adults age 21 and up with physical disabilities and adults age 60 and up who need extra help due to aging, illness, or injury.

PennCares’ in-home personal care assistants and Community Habilitation Services serve older adults and individuals with disabilities across the region, allowing them to maintain and gain new independence by assisting them with personal health and hygiene, home management, companionship, communication skills, public transportation, and more.

2) Early childhood early intervention programs for children with developmental delays from birth through 5 years of age throughout Franklin, York, Fulton, and Adams counties and inclusive Child Development Groups and Preschools for young children

Did this organization participate in the inaugural Give Local York last year?

No. (We decided to participate this year because) we wanted to not only raise money but also to raise awareness of our mission and our name to the York community. We saw how much money was raised for the National Giving Tuesday and the Extraordinary Give campaign in Lancaster and thought that this would be a great opportunity for us. Working with Give Local York will provide us with that extra source we need to help spread the word about PennCare Support Services and hopefully emphasize the need for more funding from the community in which we provide services.

What are the organization’s goals for 2019?

We are trying to have a fundraiser every two months, with some being bigger than others. Some projects will include just the staff, parents, clients, and volunteers, while others will be to enlist the surrounding York communities.

(For Give Local York), $20,000 is our goal. We are developing and offering more trainings for caregivers who work with the older adult population and beginning to provide trainings for those working with and caring for children with disabilities. We are opening new preschool programs in York and expanding our in-home services to Lancaster, Dauphin, Cumberland, and Perry counties.

Grant Helps Fund EMS Provider Merger In an ongoing effort to create a uniform EMS system that provides high-quality service to all areas of York County, the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) WellSpan EMS Fund has awarded a grant of $33,000 to three local nonprofit EMS providers to create efficiencies and optimize service delivery. The three organizations in the project are York Regional Emergency Medical Services (EMS) Inc., Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance.

The grant supported the hiring of a legal consultant to perform an analysis of the organizations, the market, infrastructure, and more, resulting in a recommendation for merging that was then taken to each organization’s managing board for review and a vote. The grant also supports the execution of the recommendations, resulting in the creation of First Capital Community Transport Partners

as the first step toward regionalizing and coordinating the provision of emergency and medical transportation services.

For the past five years, York Regional EMS, Grantley Fire Company, and West York Ambulance have been in discussions about coordination and consolidation to create the foundation on which a sustainable, broad-based, uniform EMS system could be established. With the grant from YCCF’s WellSpan EMS Fund, the three nonprofit organizations aimed to create one that is viable, high-quality, and quick to react to and resolve service area challenges now and in the future.

Established by WellSpan Health with the goal of creating a more coordinated, regional EMS system that effectively meets the needs of York County communities, the YCCF WellSpan Emergency

YCSWA Appoints Scalehouse Weighmaster The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) has appointed Kianna Rivera to the position of scalehouse weighmaster.

Rivera is responsible for weighing the trucks entering and exiting the York County Resource Recovery Center and recording the data necessary for tracking and billing customers.

Rivera is also responsible for answering inquiries and providing site directions to waste customers utilizing the York County Resource Recovery Center.

She resides in Dover.

Grant To Support Library Upgrades The Jean Barnett Trone Memorial Library of East Berlin was one of only 27 public libraries in 18 counties awarded a grant from the Office of Commonwealth Libraries, Pennsylvania Department of Education, with funds provided from the Keystone Recreation, Park, and Conservation Fund. Keystone grants are competitive grants that pay up to 50 percent of eligible costs to plan, acquire, construct, or rehabilitate public library facilities.

Logos Academy Posts Change

The NAWCC National Watch and Clock Museum, 514 Poplar St., Columbia, will hold its inaugural Clockwork Festival on Saturday, April 13, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. This fun and educational event will bring together enthusiasts of the maker movement, steampunk, Gearworks, and automaton communities all under the umbrella of horology - the art and science of the study of time.

Vendors will sell related items as well as refreshments.

Two panel discussions will be held, one focusing on horology and one focusing on the maker movement. These panels will trace the connections among gear-related creations, automata, engineering, and horology. Participants will include Michele Marinelli and Jere Ryder, both of the Morris Museum Guinness Collection in Morris Township, N.J.; Brett King from AutomataCon; steampunk maker Don Dodson; and Lindsey Pei, watchmaker

and designer from Ornament Incarnate. Dave Lindow, machinist and maker of the Lindow Rose Enginew, will lead a Rose Engine turning demonstration.

In addition, there will be a craft contest, a behind-thescenes tour of the museum, a steampunk costume contest, and tea dueling. The day will be capped off by a performance by the band Night Watch Paradox, which will be a participatory journey of musical performance and storytelling.

Chapter members and guests who attended the event supported the chapter’s donation of supplies to Peaceable Kingdom, an animal welfare organization in the Lehigh Valley area. Donated items included dry food, treats, supplies, and cash donations among additional
