September House and Feed The Vets have partnered in an ongoing project to crochet plastic mats for homeless people. Volunteers collect recycled plastic grocery bags and then, under the direction of Tippy Ness, the volunteers cut the bags into strips, join the strips to make “plarn,” and crochet the plarn into mats. The mats are given to Michael Gurreri of York Giving Helping Hands, CJ Hoffman and pastor Thomas Adinolfi for distribution to York County residents.

The mats are used for waterproof ground covers and can be used for inside or underneath sleeping bags for those sleeping outside. It takes approximately 750 grocery bags to make one mat.

KCA, Church Will Hold Bazaar, Open House Keystone Christian Academy (KCA), Asbury United Methodist Church and community partners will hold a spring bazaar and open house, a day of free and low-cost activities along with opportunities to tour the school and the church, on Saturday, April 13, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. KCA and the church are located at 340 E. Market St., York.

The event will feature an Easter egg hunt, displays and demonstrations, carnival-type games and other activities for children. Free balloons and popcorn will be available for the first 200 children.

The Easter egg hunt for children age 12 and under will begin at 9:15 a.m.

Puppeteers from the church will present puppet shows at 10:30 a.m. and 12:30 p.m.

The 21st annual Pennsylvania Herb and Garden Festival will be held from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Friday, April 5, and from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Saturday, April 6. The event will be held in Memorial Hall at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York.

The two-day festival will include a full schedule of nationally known speakers, demonstrators, and instructors who are knowledgeable in gardening and using herbs and flowers for medicinal, culinary, and crafting purposes. The 2019 Herb of the Year is anise hyssop, a self-seeding perennial that works well in sunny borders, wildflower gardens, and herb gardens.

The 2019 featured speaker will be Susan Belsinger, horticulturist, author, culinary herbalist, educator, food writer, photographer, blogger, and editor.

Referred to as a flavor artist, Belsinger delights in kitchen alchemy - the blending of harmonious foods, herbs, and spices - to create food and beverages.

Friends Group Seeks New Members Friends of the Library are inviting supporters of the Dover Area Community Library, 3700 Davidsburg Road, Dover, to visit the library from Monday, April 8, to Tuesday, April 16, which is National Library Week, to renew their annual Friends’ membership or to become a new member.

The Friends are a group of volunteers who work together

The winners of the annual York County Libraries “A Celebration of Poetry” Contest will read their winning entries at 5:30 p.m. on Wednesday, April 3, at Martin Library, 159 E. Market St., York. The celebration event is free and open to the public.

Students from York and Adams counties were invited to submit an original poem.

Entries were judged on content, style, and creativity by a panel of local educators and writers.

The winning poems will be published on the York County Libraries’ website and in a booklet, which will be added to the library collection.

First-, second-, and thirdplace winners were selected in several age groups. The student winners for grades one and two are Lydia Clouser, Newberry Elementary School, first; Blake Shiflet, Yorkshire Elementary School, second; and Steven Zhang, Yorkshire Elementary School, third. Breakfast, Easter Bunny Visit Posted Boy Scout Troop 94 and the Shiloh Lions Club will host a pancake breakfast featuring a visit from the Easter Bunny on Saturday, April 6, at Shiloh Fire Company, 2190 Carlisle Road, York.

Troop 94 will make pancakes and sausages from 7 to 11 a.m. The breakfast will also include orange juice and coffee. Separate fees have been set for adults and for children.

Extra sausage will be available for purchase. The proceeds from the breakfast will benefit

the Boy Scouts’ individual accounts, which help to pay for Scout-related items like summer camp.

The Easter Bunny will arrive at the fire hall at 10 a.m. to greet the children and hand out candy bars. There is no fee to visit with the special guest.

Program To Highlight Healthy Aging The York County Area Agency on Aging will host free educational workshops to learn about the “10 Keys to Healthy Aging.”

The workshops will be taught by a certified health ambassador through the Area Agency on Aging.

Developed by the Center for Aging and Population Health at the University of Pittsburgh, along with the CDC Prevention Research Center, this health-promotion program provides many no-cost and low-cost preventative services to promote successful aging.

Each of the “10 Keys” is a step in

preventing disease and improving quality of life. They include lowering systolic blood pressure; stopping smoking; participating in cancer screenings; getting regular immunizations; regulating blood glucose; lowering LDL cholesterol; being physically active; maintaining healthy bones, joints and muscles; combatting depression; and maintaining social contact.

The free workshops will be held at two locations beginning in April. The workshops are a five-week program.

Annual Flyball Tournament Set

Make your entrance with style!

Local flyball team Clean Break Flyball will host its 14th annual tournament on Saturday, April 6, and Sunday, April 7, at Yellow Breeches Sports Center, 700 Shawnee Court, New Cumberland. The tournament will be held each day from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The event is free and open to the public.

Clean Break was formed in 2004 and competes under the North American Flyball Association (NAFA). NAFA tournaments are divided into divisions so that teams compete against other teams of similar speed. All dogs, including mixed breeds, are eligible to compete and earn titles in NAFA-sanctioned tournaments.

More than 40 flyball teams from Pennsylvania, New Jersey, Maryland, New York, and West Virginia have registered to participate in the upcoming tournament.

Flyball is a fast-paced dog team relay race. Flyball races match two teams of four dogs each, racing side-by-side over a 51-footlong course. Each dog must run in relay fashion over four jumps, trigger a flyball box, releasing the ball, retrieve the ball, and return over the jumps. The first team to have all four dogs complete the course clean wins the heat.

football team will offer numerous carnival-type games with prizes donated by local business partners, earning community service medals for 10,000 Acts of Kindness. 10,000 Acts of Kindness is a multicultural, multifaith unity festival to be held on Sunday, June 30, at Penn Park. To be one of 10,000 people seated at the table, a person must perform a recognized act of kindness that benefits others in a tangible way.

Several individuals and organizations will be present on April 13 to educate the community about their work. A team from the York Fire Department will showcase a fire truck, and representatives from the York City Police Department will be on-site, possibly with the McGruff mascot. Woodworker Andrew Morrow will display and discuss various handcrafted products made from assorted hardwoods, and attendees can learn about the various types of wood and how to properly maintain products made from them.

Master Gardner Virgil Davis will be on hand to answer questions about spring planting, and various flowers and plants will be for sale. A food stand and bake sale will offer a variety of food items.

KCA, a private Christian school offering education for prekindergartners through ninth-graders is currently enrolling students in prekindergarten through ninth grade for the 2019-20 school year. Families from all backgrounds are welcome; admission is not open only to churchgoing families.

Tours of the school and church will be available from 9 a.m. to noon during the event.

Churches To Host Choir Concert Salem United Church of Christ (UCC) and Dover UCC will host a concert by the York County Junior Honors Choir at Salem UCC, 2705 W. Canal Road, Dover, on Sunday, April 7, at 3 p.m. Admission is free.

Under the direction of Donna Knott, York County Junior Honors Choir is a choral performance and music education program consisting of 100 singers in grades seven to nine who are selected through audition from 20 public school districts and private schools, homeschools, churches, or voice studios of York County.

The group performs patriotic, traditional, and folk music.

The York County Junior Honors Choir has been invited to perform at Heinz Chapel; the Naval Academy Chapel; New Bethel Baptist Church in Washington, D.C.; and American Choral Directors and Pennsylvania Music Educators conferences. The group was also invited to sing for the Music Education Department of Penn State University. The choir has performed Rutter’s “Mass of the Children” with York Symphony and has sung with the University of Pittsburgh Men’s Glee Club; the Penn State Men’s Glee Club, Essence of Joy, and Oriana Singers; the Heinz Chapel Choir, under the direction of Chanticleer

The Junior Honors Choir has taken part in choral exchange programs with numerous public school choral programs throughout the state.

The group has also participated in choral workshops with conductors such as Nick Page, Dr. Anthony Leach, Christine Jordanoff, and Dr. Lon Beery.

Junior Honors Choir members act as mentors for York County’s annual Elementary Choral Festival and travel to various schools in York County to promote choral education, underlining the importance of community and leadership.

In addition to Junior Honors Choir, the 40-member Synergy Vocal Ensemble is available to sing in smaller venues. The ensemble has performed with the David Benoit Jazz Quartet and as part of “Christmas With the Celts.”

To help children cope with loss, Hospice & Community Care will host its annual grief camp for children, Camp Chimaqua, from Friday, May 31, to Sunday, June 2. The camp will begin at 5 p.m. on May 31 and end at 1 p.m. on June 2 and will be held at Gretna Glen in Lebanon.

Offered through Hospice & Community Care’s Pathways Center for Grief & Loss, Camp Chimaqua is an overnight weekend camp for children ages 6 through 12 who have a loved one who has died. The camp aims to help children explore their feelings, develop coping skills, and build self-confidence.

Couple Makes Gift To College Nina arrived at York College in 1974 and instructed an array of physical education classes throughout her 42-year career, including tennis, badminton, field hockey, basketball, modern

Nina and Lester Grove recently made a significant gift to the York College Fund through their will. Nina is a restired York College faculty member.

dance, concepts of wellness, and her favorite, country Western and square dance. She regularly attended both national and state association conferences to stay abreast of current trends and keep the physical education program current.

She also dedicated her time and energy to coaching. When Nina arrived at York College, there were two sports available to woman athletes: basketball and field hockey. She coached both of these, as well as softball when it was added. She coached field hockey for 19 years, including the time she was working toward her doctorate in adult education from Penn State Harrisburg.

Nina’s tenure was marked by the growth of women’s sports and equal opportunity for women as leaders. In addition to providing athletic opportunities for women, the Penn Mar Conference encouraged women, including Grove, to serve in leadership roles. Grove served as the first Title IX athletics compliance officer for York College.

Nina served two departments throughout her career.

In addition to teaching physical education in the Department of Education, she also later taught

sport management courses in the Department of Hospitality, Recreation and Sport Management. Outside the classroom, she served as the NCAA faculty athletics representative for many years, a member of the college’s Athletic Board of Control, and a member of several committees for the Academic Senate. She received the Student Senate Faculty Recognition Award in 1994 and was recognized for her service to the athletic department and to York College’s athletics in 1999 when she was inducted into the Athletic Hall of Fame.

She also served her community as a 25-year member of York Township Recreation Board and in leadership roles at her church.

She and Les have lived for years on her family’s farm in Dallastown. In their retirement, they continue to farm the property, which has been in Nina’s family since 1852.

Les also has a strong connection to York College: He earned an associate degree from the college as an adult learner in 1997.

He worked as a purchasing agent at several different organizations, including Blockhouse Company Inc., before retiring. The Reid/Grove children also attended York College.

On Feb. 1, First Capital West York staff wore red to support the Go Red for Women movement. First Capital also sponsored a table at the Go Red for Women Luncheon held at the Out Door Country Club. In 2003, the American Heart Association and the National Heart, Lung and Blood Institute created National Wear Red Day to take action against heart disease, the No. 1 killer of women. Millions of people all across the country took part in the recent special awareness day.
