Lenten Breakfast Series Planned Seven Lutheran pastors will speak during a series of Lenten breakfasts to be held by the Lutheran Men’s Club of York County. Breakfasts will take place at 7 a.m. at Lyndon Diner, 1353 Kenneth Road, York.

The breakfasts will be held each Wednesday of the Lenten season. The schedule is as follows: March 6 with the Rev. Dr. Robert Driesen, retired Bishop of the Upper Susquehanna Synod; March 13 with the Rev. Beth Schlegel, pastor of St. Peter Lutheran Church, York; March 20 with the Rev. On Sunday, March 10, a short 6mile hike around Rocky Ridge County Park will start at the Hidden Laurel Picnic Area parking lot.

The trail has several hills, and some may be strenuous and rocky in some areas. On Saturday, March 16, participants will participate in Appalachian Trail boundary work, which will involve walking off the trail over the side of the mountain to find boundary markers, refresh paint on the trees, and prune out the undergrowth along the boundary. The meeting location will be Emigsville Park and Ride, Route 83, exit 24, with a departure time

of 8 a.m. There will be a nominal carpool fee.

On Sunday, March 17, a medium or long hike of 8.5 or 14 miles will be offered at the Standing Stone Trail (STS) to complete the Monument Rock section. Participants will start at the parking area for the Todd Trail, hike up and over the mountain, and eventually meet up with the STS. From there, they will stay on the STS, climbing up to the next ridge to see Monument Rock. Participants should expect steep climbs, rocky terrain, and possible icy/snowy conditions. The meeting location is 1201 Woodberry Road, off Route 30 at Route 616, and the departure time will be 7:30 a.m.

On Sunday, March 24, a short 4.5-mile hike will be held on Trail 5 at Lake Redman. The trail has some steep climbs but is well maintained. The meeting location will be the York County School of Technology parking lot, with a departure time of 1 p.m.

On March 24, a long 9- to 10mile hike will be offered in Gettysburg National Military Park. Participants will meet at 9 a.m. in parking lot number 3, which is west of the visitor center. Participants will hike a loop trail, passing some of the most significant highlights of the battle. The trails will be paved, grass, and gravel, with some moderate hills. The hike leaders will be Ron Boyer and Darla Stover, and readers may call 717-873-4862.

On Sunday, March 31, a short 5-mile hike will start at the Wrightsville Boat Launch and end at the Moon Dancer Winery parking lot. Hikers will have moderate elevation going through Murphy’s Hollow and Grace Plateau and on to High Point, where there is a 360degree view of the river and surrounding hills. The York Hiking Club has planned a number of upcoming events. In the event of inclement weather, interested participants may contact the hike leader or check the club’s Facebook page for cancellation information.

On Sunday, March 3, a medium 6-mile hike will explore the current and future routes of the Mason-Dixon Trail in Hellam Hills. One-third of the hike will be off-trail on uneven and sometimes rocky or muddy terrain, and there will be two stream crossings. The center offers a Tang Soo Do (Korean martial arts) program every Monday and Wednesday from 1 to 3 p.m. This instruction, taught by a certified teacher, is offered at varying levels, and benefits may include increased stamina, flexibility, mental acuity, agility, and more. New students are welcome. For a more relaxed daily workout, individuals may participate in the center’s daily program from 10 to 10:30 a.m. that features light exercises.

Cards and games will be offered

throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m. Chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. On Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., a group plays 500 bid. Bridge club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center also sets up to play shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m. Wood burning classes/workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

York County residents age 60 and over are invited to visit and take a short tour of the center to meet the staff and members, and they may stay for a free lunch and participate in activities.

This year’s event will include 80 different exhibitors. Also, PAGSY named the Veterans Memorial Gold Star Healing and Peace Garden in York’s Memorial Park 2019 Charity of the Year. Gold Star Garden is a 501(c)(3) veterans’ service organization that installed a living memorial that is dedicated to all veterans and names the Pennsylvania fallen in the Global War on Terrorism. It is located at 1000 Vander Ave., York. The garden will have an information booth and plant sale in the garden market. Proceeds will

Explorer Announced As Keynote Speaker Robert Ballard, founder and president of the Ocean Exploration Trust and explorer in residence at the National Geographic Society, will be the keynote speaker for the 2019 annual event hosted by The Manufacturers’ Association. The 27th annual Pennsylvania Garden Show of York (PAGSY), themed “Flowers on Parade,” will take place in Memorial Hall at the York Expo Center, 334 Carlisle Ave., York. The event will run from 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. on Friday, March 1, and Saturday, March 2, and from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Sunday, March 3.

The event will include walkthrough landscape display gardens and a garden market with flowers, unusual plants, and garden lifestyle items, as well as “Minhwa - Reflections of Traditional Korean Art With Modern Interpretation,” an art exhibit by Jin Young Jeong, an artist from South Korea. She uses traditional paints with mulberry and rice paper as she works in heritage Korean style with a modern interpretation.

“Here Comes the Parade,” a Standard Flower Show within PAGSY by Federated Garden Club (FGC) of Pennsylvania District IV, will take place within the Garden Market Hall and will be evaluated by certified judges from all over the country. FGC includes clubs in York, Lancaster, Lebanon, Cumberland, Dauphin, Fulton, Franklin, Perry, and Adams counties.

Free seminars by experts will be offered daily on the WITF Stage in the Hall of Gardens.

Visitors can speak firsthand with garden experts including Mark Viette, Jack Hubley, Carolyn Bupp, Chef Tim, Vince Butera, and George Weigle.

The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer Healthy Steps for Older Adults, an evidencebased program that aims to reduce fall risks among older adults by raising awareness about the causes of falls and how to prevent them.

The two-day program, held for two hours each day, is designed to be fun, social, and validating.

Participants will learn how to exercise safely at home and be offered information on ways to improve their health and wellbeing. Discussions will include home and medication safety, as well as appropriate foot care/footwear.

Participants will be involved in physical skill screenings to determine their fall risk. Participants will be referred to appropriate health care professionals and community resources, as deemed necessary, to meet their needs when it comes to preventing falls.

Library Receives Recognition

2019 Mock Trial Competition Set

Guthrie Memorial Library, 2 Library Place, Hanover, was named a Gold Star Library by PA Forward, a division of the Pennsylvania Library Association. The library was recognized for offering quality programs within the five Literacies: basic, information, financial, health, and social and civic.

A reception was held by the library’s board of governors on Jan. 24. In attendance were local business owners, supporters, board members, York County Libraries staff, and dignitaries Dan Moul, Chris Reilly, and Carrie Nace, representing Kate Klunk’s office.

Founded in 1911, Guthrie Memorial Library has a history of providing free and low-cost programs for the community to help shape the stories of local children, teenagers, adults, seniors, and families. The library is an accessible-to-all learning and gathering space, serving as a resource for information, recreation, literacy support, and lifelong learning.

Almost 300 teams from 242 high schools across Pennsylvania will compete in district and regional levels of the Statewide Mock Trial Competition sponsored by the Pennsylvania Bar Association Young Lawyers Division. Pennsylvania’s mock trial program, now in its 36th year, is recognized as one of the largest in the nation.

During the competition, eightmember student teams are given the opportunity to argue both sides of the case in an actual courtroom before a judge. The students, who play the roles of lawyers, witnesses, plaintiffs, and defendants, are assisted by teacher coaches and lawyer advisers in preparing for competition.

Lawyers and community leaders serve as jurors for the mock trials. The juries determine the winners in each trial based on the

The district and regional levels of the competition will continue throughout February and March. At the conclusion of the local competitions, 14 high school mock trial teams will advance to the Pennsylvania Bar Association Statewide Mock Trial Championships, scheduled on Friday, March 29, and Saturday, March 30, in Harrisburg. The winning team of the state championship will represent Pennsylvania in the national mock trial finals to be held from Thursday, May 16, through Saturday, May 18, in Athens, Ga. This year’s hypothetical case is a criminal jury trial in which the defendant, a local pain management doctor, is accused of

prescribing opiate painkillers outside the realm of normal medical practice, resulting in the overdose death of his patient. The case was written by Jonathan A. Grode of Philadelphia, Paul W. Kaufman of Philadelphia, Jonathan D. Koltash of Harrisburg, and Talia Charme-Zane, an alumna of the Pennsylvania mock trial program and former captain of the Central High School team in Philadelphia.

2019 PA Cleanup Event Scheduled Keep Pennsylvania Beautiful has announced that registration for the 2019 Great American Cleanup of PA is open. This annual event will run from Friday, March 1, to Friday, May 31.

During this period, free trash bags, gloves, and safety vests will be donated to registered events

by PennDOT, the Department of Environmental Protection, and Keep America Beautiful, as supplies last. Events must be registered through the Great American Cleanup of PA website, www.gacofpa.org, to receive free cleanup supplies. Events can include litter cleanups, illegal dump cleanups, beautification projects, special collections, and education events.

As part of this event, the Pennsylvania Department of

Environmental Protection and Pennsylvania Waste Industries Association will sponsor Let’s Pick It Up PA - Everyday from Saturday, April 13, through Monday, May 6. During this time, trash collected at registered events can be taken to participating landfills free or for a reduced cost with prior approval.

During the 2018 Great American Cleanup of PA 108,638 volunteers were instrumental in cleaning up more than 6.6 million pounds of trash during 5,362 events held across the state. Groups, individuals, and local governments anticipate the annual initiative as a way to rally volunteers, reduce cleanup costs, and be connected to a larger movement.

New Ag Business Service Slated Under the Ground is an annual subscription-based service and network through Penn State Extension that provides businesses with a comprehensive picture of their retail storefront from the eyes of peers and marketing specialists. The program is open to all small agricultural businesses within southeast and southcentral Pennsylvania that have a retail space.

Businesses can become part of the peer network. Through direct observation as secret shoppers, participants will get to the root of how different agricultural retail spaces are designed to enhance the customer experience. Each business involved will receive quarterly reports detailing feedback from both fellow business own-

ers and industry specialists.

Businesses will be provided with quarterly reports that will assess their displays, signage, customer service, and more. In addition to observing other retail spaces and receiving quarterly feedback, businesses will build a peer network that connects regularly through a closed social media group, networking events, and tours.

The test pilot will take place in 2019 to 2020. The focused area will be available to the following 19 counties in the southeast/southcentral quadrant of Pennsylvania, including Adams, Berks, Bucks, Carbon, Chester, Cumberland, Dauphin,

Delaware, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Lehigh, Monroe, Montgomery, Northhampton, Perry, Philadelphia, Schuylkill, and York.

Application forms for the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program are now available for eligible Pennsylvanians to begin claiming rebates on property taxes or rent paid in 2018. The deadline to apply for a rebate is Sunday, June 30.

The rebate program benefits eligible Pennsylvanians age 65 and older, widows and widowers age 50 and older, and people with disabilities age 18 and older. The income limit is $35,000 a year for homeowners and $15,000 annually for renters, and half of Social Security income is excluded.

The maximum standard rebate is $650, but supplemental rebates for certain qualifying homeowners can boost rebates to $975. The Department of Revenue automatically calculates supplemental rebates for qualifying homeowners.

Rebates will be distributed beginning Monday, July 1, as required by law. More than $252.6 million in property tax and rent rebates has been sent to more than 527,000 homeowners and renters across the state for property taxes and rent paid in 2017.

Since the programâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s inception in 1971, more than $6.9 billion has been paid to qualified applicants through the Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program.

Property Tax/Rent Rebate Program claim forms (PA-1000s) are loaded into the Department of Revenueâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s processing system in late April. There will be no information available on a claim until that time.
