Organ Concert Series Scheduled

The Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York, will partner with the Susquehanna Valley Theatre Organ Society to bring a series of three organ concerts to downtown York’s Capitol Theatre in the spring. Each concert will begin at 3 p.m. and showcase the work of a different organist. The Susquehanna Valley Theatre Organ Society has partnered with the Appell Center for many years to hold silent film presentations as well as pre-film performances for Capitol Theatre audiences.

The concerts will mark the first official organ concert series hosted at the recently renovated Capitol Theatre.

York County residents age 60 and up are invited to take a tour, meet staff and members, stay for lunch, and participate in activities.

On Tuesday, Feb. 26, from 10:30 to 11:30 a.m. will be a presentation on “The Nuts and Bolts of Medicaid.” This program is designed to inform all seniors about the Medicaid program and when it can be accessed.

On Thursday, Feb. 28, at 10:30 a.m. will be an activity planning meeting. Participants will plan upcoming events like the March Monday Murder Mystery, the annual tea party and

circus event, other trips and things to do, and the center’s Isaac’s fundraiser and pretzel sandwich sale.

The amateur (ham) radio group holds classes on Thursdays from 12:30 to 3 p.m. for those studying for the technician’s license, and a general study session is held on Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. In addition, practice tests are available on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

Free bingo is offered on Tuesdays and Thursdays starting at 12:45 p.m. A cash bingo fundraiser is held every Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. for purchasing and eating from a special menu.

Daily workouts are offered from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial arts program, is

taught by a certified teacher on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The senior center also offers cards and games throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 500 bid is played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the bridge club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available. In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

Lifetree Café will discuss when personal tragedies strike on Sunday, Feb. 24, at 9:15 a.m. and on Wednesday, Feb. 27, at 1 p.m. at St. Paul’s United Church of Christ (UCC), 2173 Stoverstown Road, Spring Grove. Lifetree Café is a place where people gather for conversation about life and faith in a casual, comfortable, and safe setting.

The event, titled “Why, God? When Personal Tragedy Doesn’t Make Sense,” will feature an original film depicting the true story of Thomas Vander Woude, who found his son struggling for his life after a backyard accident. The program will explore the search for answers following personal tragedies.

Basketball Tournament To Benefit Scholarship Fund Youths in grades three to 12, as well as adults, are invited to participate in the 20th annual Eastern York Dollars for Scholars (EYDFS) 3-on-3 basketball tournament that will take place on Saturday, March 16. Games will be held in the gymnasiums at both Eastern York High School (EYHS), 720 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville, and Eastern York Middle School, 746 Cool Creek Road, Wrightsville.

According to Sherrie Snyder, one of the event organizers, games will run continuously from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. “There are three players on the court at one time with one (substitute),” she stated. “So, teams can be up to four players.”

Snyder said that teams from both Lancaster and York counties take part in the tournament. “We usually cap the number of teams around 100 due to space and our

timeline,” she noted. “Teams are bracketed by age, as well as travel or rec teams.”

All games will be refereed, and each team will be guaranteed a minimum of three games. Basketballs will be provided, and players are asked to refrain from bringing their own basketballs into the gyms.

“There is a winner in each bracket. Winners get medals or prizes,” said Snyder, noting that there are separate divisions for adults and youths.

Snyder encourages basketball players of all ages to participate. “ We would like to reach out specifically to senior high school girls’ teams,” she stated. “We have not had enough to have a full bracket in recent years, so (we hope that girls will) recruit (their) teams so we can have everyone play.”

In addition to participating players, Snyder said that the public is invited to come watch the

games and cheer on the athletes.

“We will have concessions at both the middle school and high school,” said Snyder. “Walking tacos will be back again this year.

They were a big success at last year’s tournament. Due to space limitations, walking tacos will only (be offered) at the high school.”

To register, players may visit www.EYDFS.org through Friday, March 1. No registrations will be accepted after that date, and registration can only be done online.

Players must sign up in teams, and the set registration fee includes a tournament T-shirt for each player. After registering, each participant will receive an email with a waiver, which must be completed to play. Players under the age of 18 must have a parent or guardian approve the waiver.

Funds raised at the event will help to provide scholarships to graduating EYHS seniors in 2019. Last year, 37 students received 44 awards totaling $58,000.

Meetings of the EYDFS volunteer board of directors are held on the second Monday of each month at 7 p.m. from September through May in the library at EYHS. New members are welcome.

The York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) disposed of 4.15 tons of unused and expired residential medication collected via the Authority’s Secure Medication Take-back Box Program, community drug take-back events, and illegal drugs delivered by law enforcement for destruction. Currently, 17 York County police departments partner with the YCSWA to host medication take-back boxes in

their police department lobbies.

The Secure Medication TakeBack Box Program provides a secure disposal option for unwanted medications from residential sources at no cost to the public or to law enforcement agencies. All York County police departments have been invited to participate.

Grumbine Joins YCCF Grantmaking Team Frank A. Grumbine is the newest member of the York County Community Foundation (YCCF) grantmaking team. He has taken on the role of community investment officer. As a member of the Community Investment Department, Grumbine is responsible for implementing high-impact grantmaking programs in conjunction with volunteer advisory committees, as well as compiling and analyzing data to help maximize and promote community impact.

Grumbine will use his background in environmental areas such as wetlands, conservation, waterways and air quality to help him identify and research best practices as he supports YCCF’s Codorus Watershed, agriculture and land preservation and sustainable energy

field of interest funds. Working with grantees to educate them about the grant application process and coaching them in best practices for successful grants will also be a key component of the role. Grumbine will also compile and analyze grant data to quantify and promote the community impact of grants awarded by YCCF. Grumbine is a graduate of Shippensburg University, where he was a member of both the Phi Alpha Theta and Phi Theta Kappa National Honor Societies. Most recently he served as an architectural consultant for Colonial Keystone, overseeing projects to interpret and preserve culturally or historically significant structures and landscapes. He is currently a volunteer educator at the York County History Center,

performing historical research and curation, as well as guiding tours and re-enacting various roles portraying 18th-century Pennsylvania lifestyles.

Mindful Ministry Receives Donation Fathering Series Announced YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York, will offer a 12-week Mindful Fathering Parenting Series on Mondays, Feb. 25 to May 13, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. The series is free, and dinner will be provided.

The evidence-based parenting program out of Canada is specifically designed for fathers. Developed by Yorktown Family Services, Mindful Fathering is a psycho-educational group program for fathers who desire to raise children in a violence-free environment or who may have exposed their children, of any age, to intimate partner violence.

Welcoming men of all backgrounds, orientations, and cultures, this evidence-informed, early intervention program aims to help fathers learn to reduce harm, improve mental health, and make positive changes in their lives and relationships with children and women. Woodland Stewardship Program Posted The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer a Woodland Steward Training Program from April through October. Sessions will take place on Mondays and Tuesdays from 8 a.m. to noon.

The program is intended to provide foundational knowledge and practical skills for those interested in learning how to manage wooded and semiwild areas in ways that can meet human needs, improve biodiversity, restore woodland health, and regenerate degraded landscapes. The program will feature simple, small-scale, intensive, hand-tool-based techniques. No previous experience is required.

Topics will include forest ecology; disturbance-based forest management; riparian buffer design, installation, and maintenance; woodland plant cultivation; invasive species management; plant and insect identification; and animal tracking. Participants will work alongside Horn Farm woodland steward Wilson Alvarez in the woodlands and riparian areas of the 186-acre Horn Farm Center for Agricultural Education.

The program will consist of woodland work and periodic

classroom training. Classroom time will be used to introduce foundational concepts and reinforce training. Classroom time will be emphasized when winter weather prevents outdoor work.

Participants will receive their own set of tools to maintain and become proficient at using. This toolkit includes a professionalgrade axe, a woodland hoe, a bow saw, and loppers. Participants will be fully responsible for their own tools and will take their kit with them at the completion of the internship.

Alvarez is a certified permaculture designer, an inventor, a gardener, a skilled tracker, a bowyer, a nature awareness instructor, and a writer from Lancaster.

For the past 14 years, he has taught classes and workshops on bio-intensive agriculture, regenerative technology, foraging, hunting, trapping, tracking, and wilderness survival. Alvarez has studied through the Wilderness Awareness

Wilson Alvarez will lead the Woodland Steward Training Program at Horn Farm Center from April through October.

Academy Plans Lecture Logos Academy, 250 W. King St., York, will host a free public lecture by Father Moses Berry on Thursday, Feb. 28, from 6:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the auditorium.

The doors will open at 6:15 p.m.

Berry will present “Slavery and Ancient Christian Roots in African-American Spirituality” and display artifacts from the Underground Railroad and the slave trade. Berry is curator of the Ozarks Afro-American Heritage Museum.

Vaz earned a doctorate in electrical engineering from WPI, focusing on signal analysis and machine vision. He held systems and design engineering positions with the Raytheon Company, GenRad Inc., and the MITRE Corporation before joining the WPI Electrical and Computer Engineering faculty in 1987. He served as dean of Interdisciplinary and Global Studies for 10 years and has advised hundreds of undergraduate research projects around the world.

Vaz was named the inaugural director of WPI’s Center for Project-Based Learning in January 2016. In his current role, Vaz

works with colleagues across campus to help advance projectbased learning at colleges and universities around the nation and the globe as well as support project-based learning on the WPI campus.

Newpher had numerous accomplishments during his time with PFB and AFBF and was known for demonstrating a supportive management style focused on the betterment of grassroots members. Newpher also directed a titanic change at AFBF, overseeing the consolidation of offices in Chicago and Washington, D.C., to a single office in the nation’s capital.

In 2011, PFB established an endowed scholarship in Newpher’s name at the University of Pennsylvania’s School of Veterinary Medicine.

Newpher Receives Farm Bureau Award Former Pennsylvania Farm Bureau (PFB) employee Dick Newpher received the Founders Award during the 100th annual Convention of the American Farm Bureau Federation (AFBF).

The convention took place in New Orleans.

The Founders Award was established in January 2017 to recognize exemplary leadership, service or contributions to the Farm Bureau by officers or employees of AFBF and state Farm Bureau organizations.

PFB nominated Newpher for the Founders Award. He was selected as the award’s recipient by a national Farm Bureau committee.

Auctioneers Receive Recognition The father-and-son duo of auctioneers Charles L. Wehrly and Scott C. Wehrly, both of Glen Rock, recently received various accolades, as did their associate Shawn Carbaugh.

At the Pennsylvania Farm Show on Jan. 9, Carbaugh placed fourth out of 22 in the Pennsylvania State Bid Calling Contest.

Charles was honored for his years of service by the state’s swine association at the Farm Show on Jan. 4. Charles’ service dates back to the 1950s, showing hogs and being a ringman.

Additionally, at the Pennsylvania Auctioneers Association (PAA) Conference in Harrisburg on Jan. 11, Charles was inducted into the PAA Hall of Fame, along with Harry A. Anderson of Rogers, Ohio.

Induction into the Hall of Fame is the association’s highest honor for

its members, and Charles was surprised by his induction. Nevin Rentzell and Harry Bachman presented the award.

While Scott and Charles were on the stage for Charles’ recognition at the convention, Bachman surprised Scott by announcing that he had been named the 2019 Auctioneer of the Year.

According to Scott, this is only the second time that a father and son received such honors in the same convention; the other time featured Blaine and Nevin Rentzell.

Charles and Scott are both from the Central Chapter of PAA. The PAA Conference is held concurrently every year with the Pennsylvania Farm Show.

Partnership Has Global Impact Deep in the interior jungle regions of the tiny South Pacific island of Vanuatu, NiVan villagers gather their jugs to begin the more-than-one-hour hike each way to collect water. In Pennsylvania, Douglas Flemmens, Messiah College’s director of The Collaboratory, wraps up preparations for The Collaboratory’s Monday night discipleship meeting with students. Two very different worlds collide when The Collaboratory teams up with Friends In Action Intl. (FIA) to complete life-changing community transformation projects in various regions around the globe.

“Our Collaboratory mission statement boils down to two things: changing the world and changing us,” shared Flemmens. “(Working with FIA), we have the opportunity to do good projects in various places around the globe. This changes our interface with our learning and the application of what we are learning.

At the same time, it changes our hearts. We see in bigger ways what God is doing in various places around the world.”

As part of this focus, Messiah’s engineering students have teamed up with FIA, which has a headquarters located between Elizabethtown and Middletown, to provide more than 1,400 Rama Cay people with a block press to produce structural building blocks for residential housing off the east coast of Nicaragua, as storms and the elements rot wooden huts. The initial efforts on this project are slated to eventually relieve the overcrowding and unsanitary conditions of more than 200 families on the tiny island.

In June 2018, Dr. Brian Swartz’s engineering students worked with FIA to construct a pedestrian bridge above a 20-foot ravine in Rama Cay that prevented access to a proposed medical

center and baseball field from the villagers’ new hurricane-resistant homes. Messiah’s Dr. Phillip Tan also visited the Rama in December 2018 to conduct microbiological and chemical analyses of water sources.

The latest partnership of FIA and Messiah’s Collaboratory will provide clean water through 16 miles of gravity-fed piping to more than 3,500 NiVan people in Vanuatu - covering 30 villages, two clinics, and three schools.

Messiah’s Dr. Thomas Soerens visited the region with FIA after learning about the need of the villagers. “I hear your organization is a friend to the people of my village,” wrote Alani, a NiVan villager. “I write to you in need.

The dry season is come, and I cannot catch enough rain water to care for my family. I ask you for water. Please come soon to help my family and my people.

We will not make it through the dry season without help.”

The NiVan tribal leaders are already familiar with and grateful for FIA’s efforts to combine construction projects with the spread of the Gospel. The completion of a 6-kilometer road connecting 19 NiVan villages with schools and a medical clinic in 2011 resulted in faster medical transport and supply delivery, as well as more than 240 villagers coming to know Christ.

Since 2017, The Collaboratory at Messiah College has partnered with FIA to secure a source of water in a high mountain spring that produces 48 gallons per minute, enough to meet the needs of thousands of villagers nearby. The scope of the project will require approximately $435,000 and five phases to complete. Teams of short-term volunteers are already slated for 2019 and beyond.

Messiah College engineering students worked with Friends in Action Intl. to build a pedestrian bridge above a 20-foot ravine in Rama Cay, Nicaragua. The project was part of a partnership between FIA and The Collaboratory at Messiah College, which seeks to complete community transformation projects around the globe.

Primitive Skills Series Planned The Horn Farm Center, 4945 Horn Road, York, will offer a Wild Lands Immersion Primitive Skills Workshop Series in the spring. The five full-day workshops are designed to reconnect participants to the land and help them develop essential survival skills. Readers may register for individual days or the whole session.

Sessions will be offered on Saturdays, March 23 to April 27, with no workshop on April 6. All sessions will run from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Students will gain hands-on experience with basic, pre-industrial, woodland-style survival

skills and bush craft. This includes gathering wild foods and medicine, building debris-huts, tracking animals, learning firemaking techniques such as handdrill and bow drill, making basic hunting implements such as a survival bow and simple traps, and more.

Sessions include The Art of Seeing and the Science of Observation on March 23; Shelter Building and Finding Water on March 30; Ancient Art of Fire by Friction on April 13; Foraging, Hunting, Trapping on April 20; and Advanced Primitive Hunting Techniques on April 27. Students must be in good physical condition and be prepared

to be outdoors in varied weather for extended periods. Students should come fully prepared to participate in hands-on activities.

Classes are geared toward adults, but students age 15 and older are welcome to participate.

Students ages 12 to 14 may register with a paying adult.

H.O.P.E. (Help for Oncology Problems and Emotional Support) is accepting applications for the Jeannette Cartwright Memorial Scholarship. Each spring, in memory of its co-founder, Jeannette Cartwright, H.O.P.E. awards an academic scholarship to a high school senior who has an immediate family member diagnosed with cancer or who has recently lost a family member to cancer.

The successful candidate must have someone within his or her immediate household with cancer, must demonstrate a financial need, and must be accepted into a college or trade school. Scholarship winners must then prove completion of one year of the college or trade school of their choice.

The application deadline is Friday, March 15. The scholarship will be awarded in May. To obtain an application, students may contact their guidance counselor or visit www.hopelifeline.org. More information may be received by calling the H.O.P.E. office at 717227-2824.
