The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders and Contractors (ABC) recently announced that Douglas M. Dvorchak, A.R.M., assistant vice president at Murray Securus, Lancaster, has been named 2019 chair of the board.

Dvorchak has been with Murray Securus for 24 years, serving in his current position for the last 15 years. He earned a bachelor’s degree in public relations from Penn State University. Dvorchak has served on the ABC National Safety Committee (2002 to 2003), the ABC Keystone Safety Committee, and the ABC Keystone Construction Rodeo Committee. Elsewhere, Dvorchak has served on the St. Leo School board (2010 to 2014) and the North Museum board of directors (2008 to 2018).

Currently, he resides in Lancaster with his family.

Fire Company Slates Events Union Fire and Hose Company No. 1, 30 E. Canal St., Dover, has posted its upcoming events.

The fire company will hold a meat drawing on Friday, Feb. 8.

Doors will open at 5 p.m., dinner will be served at 6 p.m. and the meat drawings will start at 7 p.m.

Prizes will be from a Wellsville business. Other games will also be available. Another meat drawing will be held on Friday, March 8.

The group is for individuals with a passion for needlework, including needlepoint, crewel and cross stitch. Participants

AAUW Branch To Host Meeting The York Branch of the American Association of University Women (AAUW) will host the Hon. John C. Uhler at its program on Tuesday, Feb. 12, at the York Alliance Church, 501 Rathton Road, near the Penn State entrance. A social time will begin at 6:30 p.m., and the program will start at 7 p.m. The public is invited.

Uhler will discuss how the United States Constitution affects both corporations and consumers.

Uhler is a member of the CGA Law Firm’s Litigation group, and

he has Bar admissions to the Supreme Court of Pennsylvania, the U.S. District Court for the Middle District of Pennsylvania, the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Third Circuit, and the United States Supreme Court. He has served as the York County District Attorney and was a Pennsylvania State trial judge for more than two decades. Uhler is the first sitting judge elected as York County Bar Association president, and he serves on the association’s board of directors. He is the founder and chairman of the York County Truancy Prevention Initiative.

Farm Show Features Butter Sculpture Gov. Tom Wolf and Secretary of Agriculture Russell Redding helped unveil the Pennsylvania Farm Show butter sculpture, carved from a half-ton of butter and depicting the Choose PA Dairy “Find Your Power” campaign. The sculpture, a longtime Farm Show staple, aimed to encourage Pennsylvanians to support the state’s dairy industry.

The sculpture, sponsored by American Dairy Association North East (ADANE), featured several individuals donning superhero capes, including an athlete, a soldier, a doctor, a firefighter, and a dairy farmer. The sculptors began work in midDecember to craft the work of art from butter donated by Land O’ Lakes in Carlisle.

known to be the nation’s largest indoor agricultural event, features 12,000 competitive exhibits, more than 5,200 of

which are animal competitions, plus 300 commercial exhibitors.

September House Posts Schedule

Concert To Feature Music Of David Bowie

September House, 1251 W. King St., York, has posted its upcoming schedule of activities.

The center will celebrate Valentine’s Day on Thursday, Feb. 14, by decorating cupcakes from 11 a.m. to noon.

Attendees are encouraged to dress up for the holiday.

The amateur (ham) radio group will begin new classes on Thursday, Feb. 15. A class for those studying for the technician’s license will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m., and

a general study session will be held on Thursdays from 2 to 3 p.m. In addition, practice tests are available on Tuesdays from 1 to 3 p.m. On Friday, Feb. 15, wood burning equipment will be set up for those who want to work on a project or learn to do wood burning.

Projects will be available for purchase, as well.

Free bingo will be offered on Tuesday, Feb. 12, and Feb. 14 starting at 12:45 p.m. A cash bingo fundraiser is held every Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. for purchasing and eating from a special menu.

Daily workouts are offered from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial arts program, is taught by a certified

teacher on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The senior center also offers cards and games throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., 500 bid is played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the bridge club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch. Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available. In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

The York Symphony Orchestra will present the music of David Bowie on Saturday, Feb. 16, at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts in York. The concert will feature guest artist Jeans ‘n Classics and guest conductor Chelsea Tipton II. The York Symphony Orchestra will present a concert titled “David Bowie” on Saturday, Feb. 16, at 7:30 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. This Pops Series Concert will include special guest Jeans ‘n Classics, and it will celebrate the icon of rock and popular hits such as “Rebel Rebel” and “Space Oddity.” The concert will also feature guest conductor Chelsea Tipton II. For almost 20 years, guest artist Jeans ‘n Classics has combined world-class rock and symphonies through its ability to interpret the music of

legendary rock and pop albums and artists. The group has worked with more than 100 orchestras in venues throughout North America and created almost 1,000 original rock and pop orchestrations, which have been presented across 45 productions.

Tipton is an American conductor who has performed with numerous major orchestras. In 2011, Tipton was chosen to accompany the pop artist Sting on an extensive European tour covering 15 countries. Through this experience, he worked with 19 different European orchestras

to prepare the musicians for concerts. In addition to this role, Tipton performed with Sting in concert in the Canary Islands, Granada, and Cap Roig, Spain.

Gardening Event Set Penn State Extension and the York County Master Gardeners invite gardening enthusiasts to grow their gardening knowledge at the 23rd annual GardenWise, an educational program of speakers and seminars for home and community gardeners, on Saturday, March 9, from 7:30 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Central York Middle School, 1950 N. Hills Road, York.

This year’s GardenWise will feature award-winning native landscape designer and author Larry Weaner as keynote speaker. He will present “Living in the Wild: My House,” sharing the idea that nature does not need to be secluded, but part of everyday living.

Other noted speakers will include Susan Smith Pagano, associate professor at Rochester Institute of Technology, who

will share about the symbiotic relationship between migratory birds and fruiting plants and trees in “Native Plants and Migratory Birds: A ‘Fruit-Full’ Pairing.” Dan Duran, professor at Rowan University, will explain the role that insects play in the ecosystem and how to foster their sustainability in “An Overview of the Ecosystem Services Insects Provide.”

These speakers, plus regional urban forester Julianne Schieffer, West Nile Virus program administrator Thomas L. Smith, nursery owner and Holly Society of America president Sue Hunter, and Master Gardener volunteer Debbie Hartman will conduct interactive breakout sessions. Topics will include herbs, hollies, pruning,

ticks/Lyme disease, and more.

Croissant French Toast with Fresh Bing Cherry Sauce (Serves 4) 1/2 cup orange marmalade 2 cups pitted fresh California Bing cherries 4 croissants (Tip: Day-old are fine) 3 eggs 1/2 cup milk 1/4 cup heavy cream 1 tablespoon vegetable oil 2 cups fresh whipped cream 1/2 cup chocolate sauce Instructions: 1 - Heat orange marmalade in a small saucepan over medium-low heat. Add the cherries and cook for 5 minutes, stirring frequently.

Remove from the flame.

2 - Slice the croissants in half lengthwise, as if to make a sandwich. Whisk eggs, milk, and cream together in a flat-bottomed baking dish. Lay the croissant pieces in the egg mixture, turning several times as the liquid is absorbed.

3 - Add the oil to griddle and heat on medium flame. Cook the croissant slices until golden brown on each side.

4 - Place the bottom croissant slices on serving plates. Top with 1/2 cup cherry mixture.

Top with the croissant tops, then add a dollop of whipped cream and finish with a pour of chocolate sauce.

Rupe Installed As Zembo Shrine Potentate Fish And Sweet Potato Soup Imperial Sir Mark Hartz, Past Potentate of Boumi Shrine in Baltimore and the current Imperial Outer Guard of Shriners International, was the installing officer for the 2019 Divan members of Zembo Shrine in Harrisburg on Jan. 6. The program was held in the auditorium of Zembo Shrine and was attended by more than 170 Shriners, friends and family members.

Joseph W. Rupe Jr. of Derry Township was installed as the 98th Illustrious Potentate of Zembo Shrine. His wife, Susan, has chosen the Walk for Love to benefit Shriners Hospitals for Children - Philadelphia as her First Lady’s Project. The event will take place on Saturday, June 22, at Italian Lake across Division Street from the Shrine Center. The Philadelphia hospital serves children in the Zembo area of Dauphin, Cumberland, York, Adams, Franklin, Perry and Juniata counties and portions of Lancaster and Lebanon counties.

stronger infusion of flavors from fish and oregano to make for a warm and appetizing soup.

Fish and Sweet Potato Soup (Serves 4) 6 ounces white fish fillet, skinned 1/2 onion, chopped 1 sweet potato, about 6 ounces, peeled and diced 1 small carrot, about 2 ounces, chopped 1 teaspoon chopped fresh oregano or 1/2 teaspoon dried 1/2 teaspoon cinnamon 5 1/2 cups fish stock 5 tablespoons light cream Chopped fresh parsley, to garnish Instructions: 1 - Remove any bones from the

fish and put the fish in a pot.

Add the onion, sweet potato, carrot, oregano, cinnamon, and half of the stock. Bring to a boil, then simmer for 20 minutes or until the potatoes are cooked.

2 - Leave to cool, then pour into a food processor and blend until smooth. Return the soup to the pot, stir in the remaining fish stock, and gently bring to a boil.

Reduce the heat.

3 - Stir the cream into the soup, then gently heat it through without boiling. If the soup boils, the cream will curdle.

Serve hot, garnished with the chopped parsley.

Give Local York Gears Up For Second Year School Receives Donation

Friday, May 3, has been set as the date for the second annual Give Local York, a county-wide day of giving. During this year’s 24-hour online fundraising spree, community members may visit www.givelocalyork.org to make online donations to the nonprofit organizations of their choice.

The inaugural Give Local York event in 2018 raised $1.47 million for 211 nonprofit organizations, exceeding its goal of raising $1 million for 200 organizations. “Because we have a successful one under our belt, we have momentum on our side (for the second annual give day),” said Meagan Given, executive director of Give Local York. “My general theme for this year is ‘Bigger and Better.’”

Indeed, goals for York County’s second annual communitywide give day have been set at raising $3 million for 300 nonprofit groups. Given noted that there was a bit of a learning curve during last year’s inaugural event for organizers, representatives of nonprofit organizations, and community members, and she is optimistic that the event will continue to grow as everyone becomes more familiar with the give day concept. She noted that as of the Jan. 18 deadline for early registration, there were already 175 nonprofit organizations signed up to participate in the 2019 event, including 35 organizations that were not involved in 2018.

Given described Give Local York as a grassroots movement that is run by nonprofits for nonprofits. The event host is White Rose Leadership Institute, and organizers have drawn inspiration from give days in other communities, including Lancaster County’s Extraordinary Give. “ We had a really great model to look at from

Lancaster,” noted Given.

During the online giving extravaganza, community members will be able to make donations to a variety of 501(c)(3) organizations that do work that benefits York County and its residents. “(The) minimum gift (amount) is $10 to be inclusive,” commented Given. “We want to spread the message that everyone can be a philanthropist.”

In addition to receiving donations from members of the community, participating nonprofit organizations will also benefit from a stretch pool that has been set up to bolster the amount donated by community members. Given noted that organizers are shooting for a stretch pool of at least $250,000 - up from 2018’s $100,000 - and that community members are welcome to contribute funds to the stretch pool. At least $20,000 in additional funds will also be awarded to participating organizations as prizes.

Nonprofit organizations can register to participate in Give Local York online at www.givelocalyork.org. The deadline for organizations to sign up is Monday, April 1.

This year’s event will include an opportunity for participating organizations to connect with prospective volunteers, as well.

When they set up profiles on www.givelocalyork.org, representatives of participating nonprofit organizations will have an opportunity to list volunteer positions they are looking to fill.

On the give day, community members will be able to peruse the volunteer opportunities and sign up to help.

Given said that the idea to include a volunteerism component in the event stemmed from conversations she had with representatives from a number of nonprofits after last year’s give day. “They told me they need

money, but they also need volunteers,” she explained, noting that signing up to volunteer is a way for people to support local nonprofits, even if they do not have funds to donate.

Another new feature planned for the 2019 give day is that community members will have the opportunity to set up peerto-peer fundraising pages. “Individuals can create their own profile fundraising page for an organization they support,” explained Given. They can then solicit donations by sharing links to their fundraising pages with family and friends via social media and email.

While the mechanism for donating through Give Local York is online, there will also be plenty of opportunities for faceto-face interaction between community members and representatives of the nonprofit organizations seeking support.

“There’s a lot of energy and excitement around the give day,” Given noted. A large celebration is planned in downtown York in conjunction with May’s First Friday activities, and attendees will have the opportunity to interact with representatives of nonprofit organizations while enjoying live music and other festivities. “It’s meant to be a party,” said Given, adding that a piece of feedback she frequently heard from community members after last year’s event was: “I didn’t know how much fun it was going to be!”

Additional parties and activities will be planned to mark the give day in communities throughout the county, and details about the events will be added to the listing at www.givelocalyork.org over the coming months.

“Of course it’s great to raise that much money in one day, but it’s really about community building and coming together,” said Given.

York Catholic High School recently received two donations in support of its “Grow Today, Impact Tomorrow” Capital Campaign. The Knights of Columbus 10474 Father Gerrity Council of Holy Infant Parish in Manchester gave $10,000, and the Knights of Columbus 6353 of St. Joseph Parish in York donated $25,000. The campaign is

designed to provide resources for needed renovations and improvements to the high school with a focus on academic, student life, and extracurricular experiences.

Among the projects are renovated classrooms with facilitywide air-conditioning; upgrades and modernization to science labs and science lecture

rooms; facility-wide safety enhancements, including an elevator; the creation of a new Student and Media Center, which will also house a College and Career Readiness Center, student center, renovated chapel, and upgraded lobby; and the installation of a turf athletic field that will be used by 12 athletic teams.

PAFP Announces Resource Center The Pennsylvania Academy of Family Physicians (PAFP) has launched a Pain Management and Opioid Misuse Resource Center as it continues to address the opioid crisis through information and education for its more than 5,000 member physicians, residents, and students. This resource center contains everything from overviews on various therapies to educational webcasts to help family physicians combat opioid use disorder.

The Pain Management and Opioid Misuse Resource Center builds on prior inperson education the PAFP has provided on these topics. The center will serve as a resource to ensure individuals struggling with chronic pain or opioid use disorder can rely on their family physicians to deliver quality individual and population health care.

Mermaid Fun Swim Class Set A Mermaid Fun Swim class will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 9, from 1:30 to 2:30 p.m. at YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York.

Girls and boys age 6 and up will learn how to swim like a mermaid or a merman.

Instructors will give participants tips on how to swim with a mermaid tail and set up fun activities in the pool. Participants must provide their own mermaid tail. If participants do not have a tail, flippers will be provided. Adults must accompany any non -swimming child in the pool area.

Historical Lecture Planned The Zimmerman Center for Heritage, 1706 Long Level Road, Wrightsville, will offer a lecture on Wednesday, Feb. 13, at 6:30 p.m. Doors will open at 6 p.m.

Dr. Christian Keller will present “A Powder Horn’s Story.” On a chance visit to an antique shop, Keller came across a powder horn that once belonged to his ancestor Jacob Dritt. The find led Keller to search for the story behind it. Dritt served in the American Revolution as captain of a “flying camp” and was captured by the British Army during its assault on Fort Washington. After the war, Dritt purchased his namesake mansion, now home to Susquehanna Heritage’s Zimmerman Center.

Keller is professor of history in the Department of National Security and Strategy at the U.S. Army War College in Carlisle. His talk will place Dritt’s experiences within the greater context of what was happening in Pennsylvania and adjoining colonies during the early years of the War of Independence. Dritt’s powder

Residents of York County are invited to use their phones to snap a picture and post it using the hashtag #yorkindnessphotos.

Individuals of all ages and skill levels are invited to participate.
