Students Win Awards At Conference

Nine students from the West York Area High School Model United Nations Club attended the Hershey Regional Conference, held at the Hershey Conference Lodge and Hotel on Jan. 4 to 6.

Two West York students took home awards. Alisa Steele, a ninth-grader, won an Outstanding First Year Delegate Award for her committee, and senior Lydia Slajchert won an Outstanding Country Team Award.

Alisa represented Ecuador on the Pan-American Summit, and Lydia represented Oman on the Middle East and North Africa Summit.

The other West York attendees, their represented countries and their committees are as follows: 12th-grader Angelina Marchozzi, Algeria, Environment and Technology Committee; 12th-grader Melody Slajchert, Canada, General Assembly A; 11th-grader Katherine Hutton, Canada, General Assembly C; 11th-grader Ashley Jordan, Denmark, Social and Humanitarian Council; 11th-grader Awaiz Zahra, Legal B Committee; ninth-grader Tyler Bard, Syria, Historical Security Council, 1967; and ninth-grader Kylie Smith, Canada, General Assembly B. CASA Plans Information Sessions

Hiking Club Will Offer Events

Court Appointed Special Advocates (CASA) will hold two information sessions

The York Hiking Club will host several hikes and special events during February.

The event is part of the Hidden Figures Series presented by the Center for Community Engagement. Hidden Figures is a yearlong celebration of the

contributions of communities of color and other underserved populations. It intends to surface many histories yet to be told and many voices yet to tell them.

Celtic Folk Music Trio Posts Concert

McConkey serves as the vice president of human resources for Glatfelter Insurance Group and has more than 20 years of human resources experience.

County Chapter of the American Red Cross, Children’s Advocacy Center, Historic York and the Strand. McConkey previously served on YorkCounts.

She is a certified senior professional in human resources and holds a master’s in public administration from Penn State University. McConkey received her undergraduate degree in social studies from Bemidji State University.

DreamWrights To Open New Season DreamWrights Center for Community Arts, 100 Carlisle Ave., York, will kick off its 2019 season - “Celebrating Life” - with the comedy “The Liar,” set to open on Friday, Feb. 1, in the Studio. “The Liar” will run through Friday, Feb. 8, with performances at 3 and 7 p.m.

The play was written in the 1600s by Pierre Corneille, and it is directed at DreamWrights

by DreamWrights’ artistic director, Laurie Riffe. Riffe said she is a fan of Shakespeare and iambic pentameter, and she loves that “The Liar” brings this language to life.

Instructions: 1 - Combine egg yolks and sugar in the top of a double boiler, over boiling water. Reduce heat to low and cook for about 10 minutes, stirring constantly. This is the sabayon. Remove from the heat and whip yolks until thick and lemon colored. Add mascarpone

to whipped yolks and beat until combined.

2 - In a separate bowl, whip cream to stiff peaks. Gently fold the whipped cream in the mascarpone-sabayon mixture and set aside.

3 - Mix the cold espresso with the coffee liqueur, and dip the lady fingers into the mixture just long enough to get them wet. Do not soak them. Arrange the lady fingers in the bottom of an 8inch square baking dish (or 6 by 9 inches). Spoon half the mascarpone cream filling over the lady fingers.

4 - Repeat the process with another layer. Refrigerate 4 hours or overnight. Dust with cocoa before serving.

YMCA Posts Children’s Health Program The YMCA of York and York County has announced it will begin offering the Healthy Weight and Your Child program.

This pilot program is designed to empower children ages 7 to 13, with support from their families, to reach a healthy weight and live a healthier lifestyle. Sessions will take place from Tuesday, Feb. 12, to Thursday, May 23, on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6 to 8 p.m. at the York Branch YMCA, 90 N. Newberry St., York.

The 25-session program

engages the whole family, so together family members can understand how the home environment and other factors influence the choices that lead to a healthy weight. Additionally, the program combines the three elements of healthy eating, regular physical activity and behavior change.

Sessions are two hours in length, with the first hour delivered in a classroom setting and the second hour focusing on physical activity. The sessions are

for groups of eight to 15 children and their parents or caregivers.

Children eligible for the program must be between the ages of 7 and 13, have a body mass index greater than or equal to the 95th percentile, receive approval from their doctor or a health care provider and be accompanied by a parent or caregiver at every session.

Emergency Aid Available For Furloughed Workers Through PA 2-1-1, the United Way of Pennsylvania, the Pennsylvania AFL-CIO, and the American Federation of Government Employees District 3, have launched a text code initiative that will provide information and updates aimed to help workers who are impacted by the partial federal government shutdown.

This service will connect these federal government employees

and contractors to community resources such as assistance with food, utilities, and housing. This initiative will be available throughout the shutdown.

People may text FEDSD to 898211 to receive updates and information through 2-1-1 via text. The text code will be active throughout the shutdown. When FEDSD is texted to 898-211, subscribers will be directed to specific resources

and told how to connect with a 21-1 center if their need is urgent.

2-1-1 is a 24/7 service available 365 days per year that connects people to community organizations who can help with their health and human service needs.

Jacobus Lions To Hold Race Tournament The Jacobus Lions Club will hold a Die Cast Points Racing Tournament at the club ambulance building, 18 S. Main St., each Saturday in February. The tournament consists of three age groups: ages 5 to 7 at

YWCA Sets Town Hall Meeting The community is invited to attend a town hall meeting on Thursday, Jan. 31, at 7 p.m. at YWCA York, 320 E. Market St., York, to discuss violence in local communities. The event has been rescheduled from Jan. 17.

victim services, law enforcement, legislative representatives, and education professionals will explore the issues affecting the local community and discuss how residents can be agents of change to work toward the prevention of violence.

Attendees will learn about their risk of developing peripheral artery disease (PAD), which can strike the legs, abdomen, or neck, and learn about medications, lifestyle choices, and treatments to prevent or manage PAD. AHA Sets National Wear Red Day The American Heart Association (AHA) has announced that National Wear Red Day will be marked on Friday, Feb. 1, as February is designated as American Heart Month. Individuals, workplaces, and landmarks across central Pennsylvania will “go red” in celebration of National Wear Red Day. The initiative aims to unite millions of people for a common goal: the eradication of heart disease and stroke.

Individuals are encouraged to

wear red on Feb. 1 to raise awareness about cardiovascular disease. Participants are encouraged to share their efforts on social media using the hashtag #WearRedandGive.

In 2004, the AHA created Go Red for Women, a social initiative designed to dispel myths and raise awareness of heart disease and stroke as the No. 1 killer of women, as well as to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Go Red for Women aims to

encourage awareness of the issue of women and heart disease and also action to save more lives. In 2010, the AHA set a strategic goal of reducing death and disability from cardiovascular disease and strokes by 20 percent while improving the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent by the year 2020.

Kerry W hite will visit the center on Wednesday, Feb. 6, to present Valentine’s songs at 12:45 p.m. A free hot lunch of chili, baked potatoes, and applesauce will be served before the performance.

On Thursday, Feb. 7, special guests will be available to check blood pressures and offer tips on how to be safe in one’s home. The guests will also

accept expired or unused prescription medicines for proper disposal. Everyone is welcome to attend the program.

Free bingo will be offered on Tuesday, Jan. 29, and Thursday, Jan. 31, starting at 12:45 p.m. A bingo fundraiser is held every Wednesday starting at 6:30 p.m., with doors opening at 5 p.m. for purchasing and eating from a special menu.

Daily workouts are offered from 10 to 10:30 a.m. Tang Soo Do, a Korean martial arts program, is taught by a certified teacher on Mondays and Wednesdays from 1 to 3 p.m.

The senior center also offers cards and games throughout the week. Pinochle is played every Monday from 1 to 4 p.m., chess is played on Wednesdays from 9

a.m. to 4 p.m., 500 bid is played on Wednesdays from 1 to 4 p.m., and the bridge club meets from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. on Fridays. The center offers shuffleboard on Mondays and Tuesdays from 9 to 11 a.m., and additional players are being sought. All are welcome to play or watch.

Board games, cards, and jigsaw puzzles are also available. In addition, wood burning classes and workshops are held on the first and third Fridays.

September House delivers meals to homebound seniors on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings, and volunteers are needed to help with these deliveries. Routes are within a few miles of the center, and the time commitment is one to two hours.

The York County Department of Parks and Recreation has scheduled several activities. The programs will take place at the Nixon County Park Nature Center, located on Nixon Drive, York.

A Mammal Fur and Skulls program will be offered on Saturday, Feb. 2, from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. and Sunday, Feb. 3, from noon to 4 p.m. Attendees may arrive at any time during the drop-in program and stay for as long as they wish. Attendees will have the opportunity to test their mammal knowledge as they compare skulls and furs of different North American mammals, including the skulls of predators and prey and the furs of land and water animals. Attendees may learn which mammals are active in Pennsylvania all winter and how their fur helps them sur-

vive. Artists are invited to attend to sketch still lifes.

There is no fee, and registration is not required.

Bluebird Box Workshop and Painting activities will be held on Saturday, Feb. 9, and Sunday, Feb. 10, from 2 to 4 p.m.

A park naturalist will introduce cavity nesters, the role nesting cavities play in local habitats, and the behaviors of Eastern bluebirds. After the 45-minute presentation, participants will construct a bluebird box to take home. The activity is well suited for children age 8 and up to do together with their caregivers.

Paint will be available until 4 p.m. There is a fee per box, with a limit of two boxes per family. Registration is required by calling 717-428-1961.

A Great Backyard Bird Count drop-in program will

take place on Friday, Feb. 15, and Saturday, Feb. 16, from 8:30 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Feb. 17, from noon to 4:30 p.m. Attendees may arrive at any time during the program and stay for as long as they wish. Participants may hike a trail or watch the feeders indoors and add to the Great Backyard Bird Count weekend tally. Interactive identification stations will be available to help test and improve attendees’ winter birding skills. There is no fee, and registration is not required. Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York, on Saturday, Feb. 9, at 7 p.m. The evening will begin with a screened astronomical presentation on current events and the February night sky. Free Diabetes Workshops Set The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer free diabetes self-management workshops in York Township. York County residents age 60 and older living with Type 2 diabetes and caregivers age 60 and older caring for someone with Type 2 diabetes can participate in the workshops.

The interactive program will include six workshops, which will take place once a week. The free workshops will be held from 12:30 to 3 p.m. on

Wednesdays, Feb. 13 through March 20, at York Township Park Building, 25 Oak St., York.

The workshops will be taught by certified instructors.

Developed by the Self-Management Resource Center, formerly Stanford University Patient Education Program, this health promotion program provides tools for managing diabetes, dealing with difficult emotions, and breaking the symptom cycle that comes with the disease. The program intro-

duces participants to self-management tools like healthy eating, monitoring blood sugar, action planning, and dealing with difficult emotions, among others. A companion book, “Living a Healthy Life With Chronic Conditions, 4th Edition,” and an audio relaxation tape will be provided for all participants.

Community Production Set YWCA York has annouced that the third V-Day York community production will take place on Thursday, Feb. 7, at 7 p.m. in The Capitol Theatre at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. The production is designed to share stories about resiliency and the social stigma surrounding abuse and violence against women and girls.

The production will feature volunteer cast members from York County, including Olivia Adams, Elena Alvarado, Kasey Bireley, Colleen Dwyer, Melissa Graham, Maura Hoff, Lisa Howald, Jennifer Johnson, Sheila Kimani, Gina Meinl, Ashlyn Oberdorff, Brooke Pfisterer, Jen Swanner, and Raines Williams.
