The drive-through event replaces the VFW’s annual Children’s Christmas Party, which had to be modified because of COVID-19. “Normally, we hold a big party, and we have games and food, Santa and elves and magicians,” said VFW auxiliary member and patriotic instructor Janet Locher, event organizer. She noted that the party has been offered annually for more than 20 years. “It has (grown) over the last five years with face painting and a balloon artist. Homelessness (YCCH) Code Blue Emergency Shelter. The York County COVID-19 Response Fund has supported more than 478 families to help keep them in their homes during the pandemic through rental assistance, and it will continue to provide aid for eviction prevention. The Code Blue Emergency Shelter grant will support additional community need based on reduced capacity at homeless shelters. YCCH has identified that all existing emergency shelter spaces have been operating at less than full capacity in order to protect guests and staff from COVID-19 and to respect social distancing recommendations. This leaves the community with 195 missing overnight shelter beds for the coming winter months.
Artist Innovator Award Announced The Cultural Alliance of York County recently announced the winner of the first-ever Artist Innovator Award, Ambitious Caban. The $10,000 cash award was presented on Oct. 12 at the Spanish-American Multicultural Resource Center’s festival at Crispus Attucks. Caban then gave a musical performance. Caban, born Ana Mercado, is an independent artist from York. She is an entrepreneur, owner of Royal Court Barber Lounge and founder of the annual “Back to School Giveathon.” Her discography includes “Made for This” and “La Barbera.” The Artist Innovator Award was created to highlight and reward the exceptional level of artistic talent that exists in
York County. Caban was chosen as the winner after a panel of peer reviewers and jurors from outside York County and across the nation narrowed down the search to seven finalists and then to a single winner from those seven. Artists who work in any medium and live in York County are invited to create a profile of their work at www.york365.com in order to be considered for next year’s award. For additional information on the award, including how to be considered in 2021, readers may visit www.culturalyork.org/artist innovatoraward. Readers may contact rita@culturalyork.org or 717-812-9255 with any questions.
The cold weather only shelter, often referred to as Code Blue, provides anyone who is homeless with a place to get inside out of the winter weather elements and be safe when certain weather conditions are met. This shelter will supplement existing year-round shelter beds and provide overflow space the community uses during a typical winter. This new space will require its own staffing, supplies, sanitation, and intake processes and was set to open in December. The health and human services helpline 211 is available for individuals who may need additional resources for child care, food, housing, and other needs. Anyone can dial 211 or text their zip code to 898-211 to talk with a resource specialist for free. Although many nonprofit
organizations have paused their volunteer opportunities due to recommendations on social distancing, people can still help support urgent community needs created by the COVID-19 pandemic. Individuals who are healthy and able may visit United Way’s COVID-19 Resource page at www.unitedway-york.org /covid-19, which is updated regularly with volunteer opportunities as they are received. To post a volunteer opportunity, readers may contact Bryce Kruger at krugerb@unitedway-york.org. For more information about the fund, readers may visit www.yccf.org/covid-19 responsefund/. To contribute to the York County COVID-19 Response Fund, readers may visit www.yccf.org or www.unitedway-york.org.

PennDOT Requests Public Comments As part of its ongoing work to explore sustainable transportation options, the Pennsylvania Department of Transportation (PennDOT) is requesting public feedback for the PennDOT Pathways Program. Information is accessible at www.penndot.gov/funding and feedback will be accepted through Thursday, Dec. 17. PennDOT faces an $8.1 billion gap in its annual highway and bridge transportation funding to keep the state’s transportation network in a state of good repair. Federal funding has remained essen-
tially flat for several years despite rising inflation. Gas taxes, which comprise 74% of PennDOT’s funding, have become increasingly unreliable. Through the PennDOT Pathways Program, the department is launching an extensive initiative to examine possible near- and longterm funding solutions and how they could work in Pennsylvania. As part of this program, PennDOT recently launched an alternative funding Planning and Environmental Linkages (PEL) Study to explore options for funding

He evaluated my strengths and weaknesses and set up an exercise program to help ease my pain and to restore my mobility and balance. Now I can stand, sit, walk and do yard work for a few hours at a time, not minutes like before I started. I feel as though I have been given a second chance at my family life.â€? - Sandra W. The Sertoman of the Year Award is presented to a club member who has performed outstanding service in the community and has made exceptional contributions to the club. Harman has been instrumental in implementing the York Sertoma Club’s mission to provide community services with a primary focus on promoting hearing health. Harman developed policies, procedures, and training to qualify York Sertoma members as volunteers to conduct hearing screenings as part of the Early Childhood Hearing Screening (“ECHS”) program, which was initially managed by the SpiriTrust Lutheran Center for Deaf and Hard of Hearing, a Sertoma affiliate.
In 2018, SpiriTrust Lutheran announced it was discontinuing its involvement with ECHS. York Sertoma decided to assume total responsibility for the program. In 2019-20, Harman chaired the committee to accomplish this transition, planning every aspect of the program, including scheduling, administration, execution, and ongoing management. The Sertoman of the Year Award is a progressive award, and Harman has also received the Regional Sertoman of the Year Award for the Allegheny/Canada Region of Sertoma. When Jennifer Allen and her husband, Phillip, adopted a baby in 2017, they didn’t know their lives would change in more ways than they could imagine. “My middle son has spina bifida,” said Allen. “He can’t feel from his knees down. … We didn’t know he had a disability until we were picking him up in China.” Jaden, 4, uses crutches to walk short distances and relies on a wheelchair for longer trips. Watching her son try to navigate the world with a disability inspired Allen to create Wonders Within Reach, a travel website and blog focused on travel resources for families with disabilities. Her blog, which she launched in February of 2019, was recently named in the top 10 internationally for disability travel blogs by Feedspot, which curates and ranks blogs in niche categories. Allen, who lives in Elizabethtown and is also the mother of Wesley, 8, and Nella, 4, was a lifelong traveler before having children and has visited places around the world. She wanted to bring

that experience to her family but realized she needed to view travel in a different way because of Jaden. She got the idea for Wonders Within Reach after thinking about launching an Instagram account focused on family travel. She soon realized that although there were lots of accounts like that, something was missing. “None of the families looked like mine,” she noticed. “You don’t see a lot of families with disabilities out traveling. You tend to see other families like yours at physical therapy or at the hospital. I wanted to show what it’s like out in the community.” Allen noted that approximately 20% of people in the United States live with a disability. “My goal with my website is to raise disability awareness throughout the travel industry,” she said. “I believe that awareness is the first step toward progress.”
Allen’s website and blog feature posts on everything from the most accessible beaches to tips for a no-stress hotel stay with children, as well as ideas to help make it a little easier to navigate the world with a disability. “I know it’s difficult to get out and do things when you have a disability,” she stated. “I’m learning all sorts of tips and tricks and want to share those with other people.” COVID-19 has put a damper on her travel plans so far, she said, noting that the farthest they’ve gone as a family is Canada, but she hopes to schedule a European road trip in the future. Above all, she wants her website and blog to help raise disability awareness. “While my main audience is the disability community, I believe awareness is important for all of us,” she explained. “If we can see that there are people in the world who are different from us, we
can all benefit.” To learn more about Wonders Within Reach, readers may visit https://wonders withinreach.com/.
