Carbon-Neutral Fuel Service Launches Shipley Energy recently announced a new division, Harmony Fuels, that will provide a carbon-neutral option for heating homes with heating oil and propane to residential customers from Maryland to Maine. For each gallon of heating oil or propane a customer purchases, Harmony Fuels will purchase the equivalent number of pounds of carbon offsets from certified green energy projects. Despite the purchase of carbon offsets, Harmony Fuels expects pricing to

be equivalent to or lower than the average consumer cost of heating oil and propane.

“Consumers are increasingly aware of the impact they have on the environment, and they want to be responsible,” said Steven Downey, president of Harmony Fuels. “With the launch of Harmony Fuels, we are excited to offer our customers a carbonneutral option as a step toward reducing our collective carbon footprint.”

Harmony Fuels was created to

provide customers with the energy needed to heat their homes in a way that is less harmful to the environment. Harmony Fuels will deliver standard low or ultra-low sulfur heating oil and propane to customers to use, and Harmony Fuels will purchase the equivalent number of carbon offsets, helping to fund projects designed to lead to cleaner air and lower overall carbon emissions.

Library Opens Art Exhibit The Mason-Dixon Public Library, 250 Bailey Drive, Stewartstown, opened its third art exhibit for the 2019 season with a kickoff reception on Oct. 13.

Paintings by Canadian-born artist Pauline Biggley were accompanied with music by Mike Kirwin and refreshments. Biggley began creating

her own comic books at the age of 6. She continued nurturing her talent through high school. After moving to the U.S., she began focusing more on her artwork. Biggley minored in art at Towson University and has studied at various studios and with other artists in oil, watercolor, and pastels. She likes to paint her ex periences from life and often uses photos from her family history.

Penn State Extension in York County is accepting applications for the Master Watershed Steward Training, which will begin in late February 2020. The program was launched in 2016 in York County, and York County currently has 70 Master Watershed Stewards.

After completing the 40-hour course, trainees must volunteer 50 hours for Penn State Extension during their first year. Master Watershed Stewards in York County will volunteer in the community to improve the health of local streams, rivers, and other

The New Song Community Choir is an ecumenical choir of 40 voices from 20 different churches in the southern York County area. Under the direction of Deryl

Larkin won honorable mention in the Youth - Self-Built category for his costume entry in the parade. Larkin had constructed the costume at the age of 12 using chicken wire and tarps. The mouth opened and

closed and had a Godzilla roar sound effect.

He also placed first in the YouthBuilt Model competition for his clay models of 10 different Godzillas. In the youth artwork competition, he won second place.

Larkin is a seventh-grade student at Southern Middle School.

He plans to build another costume for the 2020 G-FEST.

Lutz Named “Celebration Of Music” Finalist Blood Bank,

Holiday Bazaar, Bake Sale Set SonLight Chapel, 53 Main St., Felton, will hold a Christmas bazaar and bake sale on Saturday, Dec. 7, from 8 a.m. to noon.

The bazaar will feature baked goods, wooden Christmas crafts, and many other varieties of Christmas items and gifts. There will also be special projects just for children.

Proceeds will benefit the child the church supports in the Pearls of Grace Orphanage in Cebu, Philippines. Over $2,500 is needed to support each orphan each year.

Payton Lutz, a freshman at Central York High School, was a finalist in the Celebration of Music Competition, hosted by Ethan Bortnick, who is driven by his desire to give young musicians the same opportunities PBS afforded him. Celebration of Music is a talent search group that showcases the best young musical talent across America. Audition tapes are sent in by contestants and, if selected, contestants continue to advance in the competition.

The competition led to a performance at The Gordon Center for Performing Arts in Baltimore on Oct. 24. One winner was selected by total viewer votes received online and in person, and the other was chosen by the producers. The two winners performed live and received an invitation to the Los Angeles Celebration of Music National Competition for another performance.

Payton, from York, is the daughter of Mark and Michelle Lutz. Now 14 years old, she started performing in shows at the Belmont Theatre (then York Little Theatre) at the age of 5 and a half. She has been in dozens of shows, and she hopes one day to perform on Broadway in New York City (NYC). In addition to performing at the Belmont Theatre, she has been part of shows at the Eichelberger Theatre in Hanover. She earned a role in Central York’s production of “Into the Woods.”

Payton also performs with The Acts of Kindness Theatre Company, which for the past 14 years has given back to the community through its Hearts Through Art. She has performed with Peter Bottros and Shine Music Foundation, a nonprofit organization.

Payton takes vocal lessons in NYC at Badiene Magaziner Vocal Studio and locally with Lisa Pantano. She takes dance classes in NYC and locally, as well as acting classes in NYC and with Donald McKenn Jr. in Media. She spends some of her summer attending weekly vocal and acting intensives at Broadway workshops in NYC. In seventh and eighth grades, Payton was presented the Leadership Award by choir director Ms. Perko and the school chorus group. This year she is a member of her high school chorus and also sings with the Chamber Singers. She has been accepted into the Central York High School Chapter of the Tri-M Music Honor Society.

For the past five years, Payton was invited to sing the national anthem at York Revolution baseball games. Payton also performs and sings at various venues as a costumed character performer and volunteers at the Belmont Theatre. She has also been a student dance teacher at Adrenaline Dance of York. Payton is currently signed and represented by Reinhard Model & Talent Agency.

York College of Pennsylvania will launch an online RN to BSN program in January 2020 to make its BSN degree more accessible and affordable to nurses in the region. Information on applying is available at https://onlinenursing.ycp.edu.

The college’s program is designed to impart skills in technology, safety and quality patient care to nurses. Accredited by the Middle States Association of Colleges and Schools, the Council for Higher Education and the Commission on Colle-

giate Nursing, the online RN to BSN program is intended to offer an affordable, quality nursing education with flexible course times and an easier application process.

York College’s RN to BSN program offers special tuition pricing for partnering regional health care providers and, depending on transfer credits, completion in 12 months, with six start times per year. Registered nurses who have graduated from an accredited program and meet requirements are eligi-

ble for direct articulation into the RN to BSN program. These nurses are granted credit for nursing coursework completed; they may receive up to 75 transfer credits for completed coursework (nursing plus support courses).

Nurses who have previously completed a baccalaureate education in another major are required to complete only the required nursing and support courses. The final 30 credits of the degree must be taken at York College.

York County Libraries (YCL) won five 2019 Best Practices Awards during the annual Pennsylvania Library Association conference. The statewide laurels were presented to youth services staff members Jennifer Johnson, Gina Meinl, Lisa Schmittle and Felicia Gettle for their outstanding programs.

The Youth Services Division of the Pennsylvania Library Association presents Best Practices Awards to Pennsylvania libraries in recognition of their exceptional services to children and youths from birth to age 18.

Winners are selected in nine categories, and from those winners one library is awarded the David J. Roberts EXCEL Service Award, which recognizes the best of the Best Practices Award winners.

York County Libraries won two Best Practices Awards for its teen initiative, the Youth Empowerment Summit (YES). It is developed and run by the Martin Library Teen Leadership Committee for high school students across York County. YES features career workshops designed to help teenagers understand why professionals pursue their vocations. YES also explores social justice issues and features a Young Adult author. Johnson works closely with the committee as the library’s teenager forum manager and was presented the awards at the conference. She received the Humanities in Action Award, a new Best Practices Award created in partnership with the Pennsylvania Humanities Council, as well as the David J. Roberts EXCEL Award.

In addition to the awards for YES, Johnson accepted a 2019 Best Practices Award in the High School Category for the Pride Dance at Martin Library. The teenager-led event is going into its third year.

Students Lions Club Honors Students Dellone Recognized For War Memorial Project Piano Plan Holiday Mike Dellone of Dallastown Burial Vault and Precast Steps was recently presented with a certificate of appreciation by Capt. Anthony D. Stabile, retired U.S. Marine Corps, for help he provided for a project at the Vietnam War Memorial in York.

The Vietnam War Memorial is surrounded by cement posts, one of which had gotten damaged by vehicles backing up and parking at the York Fairgrounds.

Woody McCleary, a member of the Vietnam War Memorial team, located Dellone and presented the situation. Dellone volunteered his services, manufactured a replacement cement post at no charge, and completed the project before Veterans Day, and it was mounted at the memorial.

YCEA Holds Graduation The York County Economic Alliance (YCEA) and partners Crispus Attucks, HACC York, Downtown Inc, and the Small Business Development Center (SBDC) held the graduation of the first class of York’s Small Business Development Program on Oct. 17. Launched earlier this summer, this curriculum-based training provided entrepreneurs and existing contractor businesses educational resources on a variety of topics.

More than 70 individuals attended the first class on July 25, and more than 40 attended all the classes of the five-week program, titled “Small Business Start Up.” Presenters included representatives from CGA Law Firm, RKL LLP, Small Business

Key Learning Consultants, Small Business Administration, Community First Fund, and Murray.

Those who participated are eligible to apply for a YoCo Bloom small business grant. Grant recipients will be announced later in 2019. They also receive the opportunity to be matched with a mentor from Susquehanna SCORE and to attend YCEA networking events to connect with the community. Contractors who completed the track will be added to the contractor distribution list for YCEA. Club To Offer Hiking Options

York Twinning Association is now accepting applications for its 2020 student exchange to Germany.

For a set cost, students will have the opportunity to travel to Germany for two weeks in June/July 2020 and stay with a group of German students who visited York in October.

They will spend time with their host families and will go on various educational trips.

A 7-mile hike out and back along the Mason-Dixon Trail will be offered on Sunday, Dec. 15, from Lock 15 to Holtwood with a 300-foot climb in eleva-

A 6-mile hike will be held on Saturday, Dec. 21, as the first hike in the Northwest Lancaster County River Trail trilogy hike.

Holiday Cookie Walk Scheduled Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, will host a cookie walk for the public on Saturday, Dec. 14, from 9 a.m. until sold out. Steam Into History, 2 W. Main St., New Freedom, will return its popular Santa Express trains to the schedule with holiday cheer for people of all ages.

The rides on Fridays, Dec. 6 to 20, will feature special Snow Queen and Ice Princess guests. Each ride will depart at 5:30 p.m., with an additional 6:30 p.m. ride on Dec. 6 only.

Santa Express will also offer rides at 11:30 a.m. and 1, 2:30, 4, and 5:30 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 14 and 21, and Sundays, Dec. 15 and 22.

Riders will hear the “Night Before Christmas” and Christmas music in anticipation of a visit from Santa. Santa will hand out a small gift to the children and take pictures with riders.
