Holiday Open House Fundraiser Set Christmas City Express Scheduled A Holiday Open House will be held on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at the home of Nadine and Brad Askey, 801 Grandview Road, York. Through the event, the Askey family, whose son, Bradly, is autistic and had his dream funded in 2014 through Sunshine Foundation, hopes to pay it forward to help another young person have a dream fulfilled. All proceeds from the event will benefit Sunshine Foundation. Specifically, funds will support Eliza, who lives in Wrightsville. Eliza is a 15-year old with Down syndrome. Her dream is to visit the theme parks in Florida. The open house will feature a fully decorated holiday home, face painting for children, baked goods for sale, and crafters selling their products. A prize drawing featuring items donated by the crafters will be held at 3:30 p.m., and winners need not be present. Sunshine Foundation president Kate Sample will be in attendance. There is a set price for admission for adults. Children age 10 and under will be admitted for free. Those who purchase tickets in advance will be entered into a “Date Night” drawing.

A Holiday Open House will take place in York on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. to help fund the dream of Eliza through Sunshine Foundation. Eliza lives in Wrightsville.
A collection of 20 Christmas cards received by Fannie Bates in the early 1930s will be on display Sunday, Dec. 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. as part of the monthly open house at the Dallastown Historical Society, 118 E. Main St. The exhibit will appeal to those who knew the Bates family, current or former Dallastown residents, and those who are interested in old postal or art items. The collection of cards is on loan from Charles Vernon, former neighbor of the Bates family. He is sharing the cards for this exhibit in memory of his wife, Beryl P. Vernon.

The Ma and Pa Railroad Preservation Society will present the Christmas City Express in December. The Ma and Pa Railroad Heritage Village is located at 1258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville. A flood in late August left the village of Muddy Creek Forks filled with mud and debris, and the north end of the rail line temporarily inoperable. Volunteers have worked to recover and ready the village and railroad. Proceeds from this year’s Christmas City Express will help to rebuild areas of track destroyed by the flood. The Christmas City Express story takes place on Christmas Eve nearly 100 years ago. The story will recount the adventure of a young girl on her way to her grandparents’ home aboard a train that gets stranded in a
blizzard. After the story and a visit with Santa, guests will board a motorcar train for a ride through the Muddy Creek Valley. A special feature of this year’s program will be an expanded running display of antique Lionel standard-gauge trains. There will also be an opportunity to purchase gifts. Special excursions will occur at 5 and 7 p.m. on Saturdays, Dec. 2, 8 and 15, and at 2:30 and 5 p.m. on Sundays, Dec. 2, 9, and 16. Ticket prices will vary and will include family activities and crafts, a Christmas City Express performance, a motorcar train ride, a snowflake ornament, caroling, and cookies and hot chocolate. Due to limited train capacity, advance online ticket purchase is required. Tickets may be purchased at www.MaAndPaRailroad.com.

Display To Feature Card Collection Fannie Bates lived with her parents, Reuben and Elizabeth Jane Spatz Bates, at 29 S. Pleasant Ave., Dallastown. She would have been about 40 years old at the time. Reuben worked at the Merchants Box Factory in Dallastown. Parking is available on Main Street, in the lot behind the building, and in the White Rose Credit Union parking lot. All regular museum displays will be open during this time, and tour guides will be available to assist visitors and answer questions.

The Foundation for Enhancing Communities (TFEC) recently announced that more than $1.34 million was awarded in scholarship funds to 485 local students for the 2018-19 academic year. More than 1,100 students applied for scholarship assistance. TFEC offers more than 120 scholarship opportunities through various scholarship funds and management agreements. All scholarships have been established by local individuals, corporations, or organizations to assist students with their educational pursuits. TFEC, through its many scholarship programs, continues to assist local students each year. Scholarship applicants demonstrate individual excellence in areas such as community service, leadership, sports, music, academics, and other unique characteristics. Ministry Sets Winter Event Shining Light Ministries, 401 E. Locust St., Dallastown, will offer clothing and household items during its winter event on Friday, Nov. 30, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. and on Saturday, Dec. 1, from 8 a.m. to 2 p.m. Items are minimally priced. In addition, volunteers are

The Delta Area Senior Center, located in the Peach Bottom Township Recreation Building at 5 Pendyrus St., has announced its upcoming activities. Free Wi-Fi, Wii bowling and walking are available from Mondays to Fridays. A hot lunch is served on weekdays at noon for a donation. Those interested in eating lunch at the center should make a reservation two business days in advance by calling the center at 717-456-5753. In the coming days, senior center members will get ready for the Christmas Fair, to be held on Saturday, Dec. 1. On Wednesday, Nov. 28, members will gather at 9 a.m. to peel apples for the apple dumplings. Participants should bring their own peeling knives. Also on Nov. 28, the veterans service officer will be present at 9 a.m. Appointments are required and may be scheduled by calling the senior center. A group will meet at Lion Bowling Center at 9 a.m. to bowl three games. Dominoes will be played at 10 a.m. after the apples are peeled. “Dutch” Welker will replace watch batteries and make minor repairs at 9:30 a.m. There is a nominal fee for the batteries. Denise will lead light exercises at 11 a.m. as well as the challenges at 12:30 p.m. On Thursday, Nov. 29, members will make beef vegetable and chicken corn soups at 8 a.m. Anyone who plans to donate vegetables for the soup should have the vegetables to the center no later than Nov. 28. Sequence will be played at 9 a.m. Ruthie Harris will lead the glass bead craft class at 9:30 a.m. There is no charge, and all materials will be provided. Patrick Lampman will be on-site to sing and play his guitar at 11 a.m. Pinochle will be played at 1 p.m. Helpers are needed to make apple dumplings on Friday, Nov. 30, at 9 a.m. Helpers should bring their own rolling pins.

Table and Wii games will be available throughout the day. A bus trip to the PA Opry in Mercersburg will leave at 9:30 a.m. for a country gospel Christmas show. Kings in the Corner will start at 9:30 a.m., yoga class will begin at 10:30 a.m., and the acrylic art class will meet at noon, as will the Hand and Foot players. On Friday, Nov. 30, aerobics will be held in the fellowship hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. Jill Kaylor will present a program on home care, and bingo will be played after lunch. On Monday, Dec. 3, shoppers will head to the Galleria, and aerobics will be held in the fellowship hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. A drawing class will begin at 1:30 p.m. Table and Wii games will be available throughout the day, and candy making will resume in the afternoon. A collection box for Toys for Tots will be available, with all gifts due by Sunday, Dec. 16. On Tuesday, Dec. 4, aerobics will be held in the fellowship hall from 8:30 to 9:30 a.m. The pinochle players will meet at noon. Christmas candy making will resume in the afternoon. There will be a variety of card and board games, plus Wii games. Doug will be available for computer questions in the afternoon.
Bingo will be played at 9:30 a.m. Light exercises and challenges will not take place. The Book Club members will meet at 1 p.m. to discuss “My Grandmother Asked Me to Tell You She’s Sorry” by Fredrik Backman. The knitting class and cribbage group will both meet from 1 to 3 p.m. On Monday, Dec. 3, Sit and Sew and dominoes games will both begin at 9 a.m., followed by a Bible study at 10 a.m. and light exercises at 11 a.m. Other activities will include challenges at 12:30 p.m., the crochet class at 1 p.m., and pinochle at 7:30 p.m. Bingo and pickle ball will both start at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday, Dec. 4. Wii Jeopardy will be played at 12:30 p.m., followed by Phase 10 at 1 p.m. The creative writing class will begin at 1:15 p.m. The all-you-can-eat pancake breakfast, Christmas Craft Fair, and basket giveaway drawing will be held at the Delta Area Community Senior Center on Dec. 1. The event is open to the community. The proceeds from all projects will benefit the senior center. Breakfast will be served from 8 to 10 a.m. The menu will include pancakes, sausages, coffee, hot tea, and orange juice. There is a charge for breakfast. The Christmas Craft Fair will be held from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Fifty-four vendors will offer handcrafted items for purchase. Lunch items will be available for purchase from 10:30 a.m. until they are sold out. The lunch menu includes chicken corn and vegetable beef soups, available by the bowl or by the quart; hot dogs; and sloppy joe sandwiches. All items may be eaten in or purchased for takeout. Fresh, homemade apple dumplings will be available with or without ice cream. Twenty-six or more filled baskets will be given away in drawings at 1:30 p.m. Tickets will be available for purchase all morning.

TAFE Will Present “The Night Before Christmas” Theatre Arts For Everyone (TAFE) will present “The Night Before Christmas” at York Learning Center, 300 Seventh Ave., York, at 7 p.m. on Friday, Dec. 7; at 3 and 7 p.m. on Saturday, Dec. 8; and at 3 p.m. on Sunday, Dec. 9. Santa will be available after each performance to visit, pose for photos, and accept letters. The poem, originally titled “A Visit From St. Nicholas,” was written by Clement C. Moore in 1823. It has been adapted and enhanced for TAFE actors and audiences. Characters include Mr. and Mrs. Santa, seven elves, one human family of six, a mouse family of five, Santa Mouse and his two mouse elves, five singing and dancing sugar
plums, two human helpers at the North Pole, and an actual grandfather clock. TAFE has a cast of 31 characters ranging in age from 7 to 72. Cast and crew members hail from areas such as York, Windsor,

Senior Center Plans Activities The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, has announced its upcoming activities. The center serves lunch at 11:30 a.m. each day. Senior center members will visit the Harrisburg Christmas Craft Show on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and the group will stop for breakfast on the way. On Thursday and Friday, Nov. 29 and 30, the center will conduct its Christmas service project. Center attendees will bake about 80 dozen cookies to give to local fire departments, police departments, borough workers, and others. Sign-up sheets to volunteer are on the cork board at the center. The Glen Rock Carolers will perform a Christmas concert at the New Freedom Borough Auditorium on Sunday, Dec. 2. The senior center will sell homemade baked goods before the concert. A group from the senior center will go to the American Music Theatre to see the Christmas show. Interested readers should call the center at 717-235-6060 for details and availability. The center also offers classes in tai chi, yoga, line dancing, ceramics, acrylic art, and watercolor art, as well as the Friends Craft Class, isometric exercises, weights exercises, HoopFit, Walking Through the Bible, card making, and quilting. The senior center is in need of a driver for the Glen Rock route of its Meals on Wheels program, which is offered three mornings each week. Volunteers only need to volunteer one morning each month, and most routes take about two hours. Readers may call the center to volunteer.

No sewing is done at the meetings. Instead, there is a show-and-tell of attendees’ work and a problem-solving discussion on works in progress.
