How Small Businesses Give Back Information from the Small Business Administration (SBA) and the U.S. Census Bureau’s Annual Survey of Entrepreneurs says that small businesses, or firms with fewer than 500 workers, accounted for 99.7% of businesses in 2016, the most recent year for data. Firms with fewer than 100 workers accounted for 98.2% of companies.

Thanks to their influence and reach, small businesses have the potential to impact local communities in numerous ways. Small businesses employ local residents. According to the SBA’s Office of Advocacy, small businesses accounted for 61.8% of net new jobs in the United States between 1993 and 2016.

Small businesses are innova-

tive. The SBA notes that small businesses represent about 96% of employer firms in high-patenting manufacturing industries.

That suggests that small businesses are full of new ideas.

Small businesses support local charities. Many local businesses give to charity, particularly local charities. Some donate money while others may offer their professional services or event spaces, each of which can be particularly helpful to local communities.

Small businesses contribute to community identity. Small businesses contribute to the charm and character of a town or city.

Many local businesses make up the fabric of a town, and towns are known and loved for the businesses that have endured.

Small businesses help the environment. Shopping locally means consumers do not have to travel far to get their goods and services. The United States Environmental Protection Agency’s research report on walkable downtown centers found small

businesses encourage walking and cycling, helping to reduce air pollution from vehicles.

Small businesses keep money in communities. Local businesses keep disposable income and tax money within their communities.

Business tax money remains local and can support schools, roads, and municipal services.

Local small businesses help to keep cities and towns prosperous and humming along. Such establishments can help build a sense of community and forge lasting relationships.

Small businesses are the lifeblood of many communities. In the United States, the majority of businesses in operation are classified as small businesses, according to data from the Small Business Administration. Consumers can express their appreciation for the small businesses in their communities in various ways.

Train Rides With Santa Slated

The Stewartstown Railroad will run its Santa trains on weekends during the holiday season.

Separate prices have been set for adults, for seniors age 65 and older, and for children ages 2 to 12. Children under age 2 may ride for free. A very limited number locomotive cab rides will also be available for an additional fee.

Storytime With Santa Planned

The Stewartstown Raiload, 21 W. Pennsylvania Ave., Stewartstown, will run its Santa trains on Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, Dec. 7 and 8, Dec. 14 and 15, and Dec. 21 and 22.

Saturday train rides will depart at 10:30 a.m.,11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m., and 2:30 p.m. Sunday train rides will leave at 11:30 a.m., 1:30 p.m, and 2:30 p.m. On Dec. 14 and 21,

a special nighttime train will leave at 6:30 p.m.

The rides will last approximately 40 minutes. Santa will be aboard the enclosed 1920 passenger coach, which is decorated for the holidays. Attendees may bring their own camera and take photos with Santa at no extra charge. Santa will have a treat for each child. Following the train

Erin M. Heffler

experience in a variety of environments. She joined the Dallastown Area School District staff in 2000 as a high school mathematics teacher while coaching field hockey and softball. Since that time, she has served the district as assistant principal at the high school and most recently as principal for the intermediate school. Additionally, Heffler has demonstrated her dedication to providing professional development, comprehensive planning, and technology integration.

Heffler earned a secondary mathematics bachelor’s degree from York College. She graduated with a master’s degree in educational leadership from Western Maryland College and later earned a doctorate degree in educational leadership from Immaculata University in 2015. Following a comprehensive selection and interview process, Heffler was named the candidate of choice.

Bethlehem United Methodist Church, 109 E. Main St., Dallastown, will host Storytime With Santa on Friday, Dec. 6, from 6 to 8 p.m. in the old fellowship hall.

Families are invited to a free evening of pre-Christmas fun that will include a visit from Santa, stories, crafts, and refreshments. Multiple craft stations will be set up for children to make and take home decorations for the season. Attendees may visit with Santa and listen to stories about Jesus and the upcoming holiday. Cookies, milk, and hot chocolate will be provided. The event is a part of First Friday, which also includes an open gym and family games.

Senior Center Plans Activities cookbooks featuring recipes from members of the center. The sale is a fundraiser for the center.

The center offers tai chi at 10:15 a.m. each day. Daily isometric exercises begin at 9:15 a.m. Stretch yoga is offered at 9 a.m. on Mondays, and line dancing is held at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Members may also use the exercise equipment or walk in the gym every morning. A balance and core class takes place on Tuesdays at 9 a.m., and a balance with weights class will be held on Wednesdays at 9 a.m. A beginner balance and core class is held on Thursdays at 8:30 a.m. The center also offers a more advanced weights/balance class on Fridays.

The center is considering restarting its HOOP-Fit class, which was held at 9:15 a.m. on Tuesdays. Anyone who is interested in participating may contact the senior center.

A new salsa dancing class is planned for Thursdays at 9:30 a.m. Interested participants may call or stop by the center to sign up for the class.

The center also offers an acrylic art class on Mondays at 9:30 a.m., a watercolor art class on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m., ceramics on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m., Walking Through the Bible on Thursdays at 8:45 a.m., and the Friends Together Craft Class on Fridays at 9 a.m. The center also offers a class on card mak-

ing every other Monday after lunch. The blanket knotting service project is available on Tuesday and Wednesday mornings. A group for quilters meets every other Wednesday to work on lap robes for veterans and other projects.

The center offers a movie and popcorn once a month. A podiatrist visits every nine weeks, and a nurse stops by once a month to conduct blood pressure checks. A jewelry making class is also planned.

A group from the center is knitting hats for Coats of Friendship, an organization that provides hats and gently used coats to homeless people in the area.

Center members may play Bunco on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., and the center aims to have 12 players each week.

For center members who live in the New Freedom, Shrewsbury, and Glen Rock areas and who no longer drive or who do not have transportation, the center can arrange for transportation to and from the center via rabbittransit.

The service is available free for anyone age 65 and over.

The senior center also seeks Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers.

Helpers volunteer one morning every four weeks. For more information, readers may call the senior center. The center delivers meals to seniors on Monday, Wednesday, and Friday mornings.

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will host upcoming activities. Individuals must be members of the center to participate in the center’s activities. To become a member, interested readers may stop by the center and sign up, and they should bring a driver’s license or other photo ID card. Nearly 600,000 Christmas lights will illuminate Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York, during the 36th annual Christmas Magic - A Festival of Lights from Friday, Nov. 29, through Tuesday, Dec. 31. Christmas Magic is a halfmile walking trail that meanders along a wooded hilltop through nearly 600,000 Christmas lights, holiday scenes, and five enclosed, heated pavilions. The trail is accessible. The spirit of the holiday is displayed by using animation, displays, visits from Santa Claus, food, a G-gauge train display, and an O-gauge train display.

Christmas Magic will be open on Mondays through Thursdays from 6 to 9 p.m. and on Fridays through Sundays from 5 to 9 p.m. Christmas Magic will be closed on Tuesday, Dec. 24, and Wednesday, Dec. 25.

Christopher Vera will present “Columbia, a Footprint to Freedom: A History of the Underground Railroad in Columbia.”

Columbia was early recognized as the birthplace of the Underground Railroad. Vera will discuss the role that Columbia played in the abolitionist movement, both because of its location and because of the people who lived in the area.

Members of the Friends of Canine Meadows will be present to process the picture and place it in a frame for a set price. Regular admissions apply for humans. This is the only night that non-service animals are allowed to attend the event. The rain date is Thursday, Dec. 5.

Tickets will be discounted for children ages 4 to 12 and seniors age 60 and older. Children under age 4 will be admitted for free.

Prepurchased, timed tickets will

be required every night. Timed admission limits the number of people attending Christmas Magic, with the goal of providing a better visiting experience and less waiting in traffic and lines.

Railroad To Host Holiday Event The Ma & Pa Railroad Preservation Society, will offer the fifth annual Christmas City Express, a seasonal train ride and story experience, on Saturdays and Sundays, Nov. 30 and Dec. 1, Dec. 7 and 8, and Dec. 14 and 15.

Saturday excursions will be available at 5 and 7 p.m. Sunday trips will take place at 2:30 and 5 p.m.

This holiday adventure includes a train journey aboard the Ma & Pa Railroad through the Muddy Creek Valley.

Doors will open a half-hour before run time so visitors can enjoy a variety of activities after picking up their tickets. They may view antique and modern model trains, make holiday crafts, sing Christmas carols and other well-known holiday songs, join in an antiques guessing game, and explore the general store, built in 1899. Everyone can join in searching for a pickle ornament hidden on one of the many decorated Christmas trees.

Those who locate the pickle can enter their name in a drawing

for the Pickle Prize.

When all have gathered, the group will be escorted by lantern light to the historic grain mill for a dramatic reading of “The Christmas City Express,” a story of a young girl traveling on the Maryland & Pennsylvania Railroad to visit her grandparents on Christmas Eve. A snowstorm strands the train, but a conductor, the young girl, and a visit from Santa ensure that Christmas is a joyful time for all.

According to Jean Sansonetti, event coordinator, passengers will then board the motorcar train at the station. After the train ride, hot chocolate and cookies will be available, and visitors may meet the actors. Copies of “The Christmas City Express” as well as other gift items will be available for purchase.

Ticketholders will enjoy a scenic train ride through the countryside of southern York County and brunch. Riders will hear “The Night Before Christ-

mas” and Christmas music in anticipation of a visit from Santa. Santa will board the train to hand out a small gift to the children, and he will pose for pictures while at the Glen Rock Mill Inn. The excursion is two and a half hours in duration.

RLABA To Promote Small Businesses The Red Lion Area Business Association (RLABA) will celebrate Small Business Saturday on Saturday, Nov. 30, with a fun-filled shopping day with the family at local stores and restaurants. Several craft and vendor shows will also take place around Red Lion. A scavenger

hunt will be held, and Santa will be on hand for pictures.

Church Posts Tree, Wreath Sales choose a pre-cut tree or a live balled tree. Those who would like to cut a live tree may take a wagon ride across the southern York County hillside to view the tree options and cut down their tree. Afterward, they may ride back to the barn and have their tree drilled, netted, and loaded. Wreaths or roping, along with other decorations, will also be available.

On Fridays and Saturdays, the church will sell Christmas crafts, baked goods and wreath and tree trimmings ,with all the proceeds

benefiting the Guinston Building Fund. Hot chocolate and cider will be available, as well.

New this year, the women of the church have crafted tree skirts, which will be available for purchase.

The Keystone Chapter of Associated Builders & Contractors (ABC) recognized local member contractor firms for their work performed on area construction projects during the 30th annual ABC Excellence in Construction Awards Gala. The gala was held on Nov. 6 at Spooky Nook Sports, Manheim.

The top award of the evening was the Project of the Year, which was awarded to Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. and James Craft & Son Inc. for their project Frederick Street Patient Tower Overbuild. The project was selected due to its community impact, client satisfaction, design features, and positive notoriety. The project was submitted

by Benchmark Construction Co. Inc. in the Healthcare Over $25 Million category and by James Craft & Son Inc. in the HVAC Over $5 Million category.

The project consisted of a six-story overbuild and expansion of Lancaster General Hospital’s existing Stauffer building, which occupies the northeast corner of the hospital’s site. Building vertically on a tight, landlocked site created several challenges.

Benchmark was able to successfully coordinate steel delivery to the site to continue building while alternating with concrete delivery to pour the completed decking as the building rose. One Book, One Community Selection Announced

Rotary Club Honors Students

Representatives from libraries have announced the selection of “Heartland” by Sarah Smarsh as the 2020 One Book, One Community (OBOC): Our Region Reads! selection.

Throughout August, members of the public were invited to view a narrowed-down list of books and vote for one they were interested in reading and discussing with other community members.

The five titles on this year’s voting ballot were “Long Way Down”

by Jason Reynolds, “Dread Nation” by Justina Ireland, “Heartland: A Memoir of Working Hard and Being Broke in the Richest Country on Earth” by Sarah Smarsh, “Poet X” by Elizabeth Acevedo, and “ VOX” by Christina Dalcher. These options were chosen by the Book Selection Committee.

Each of the five choices was deemed by the Book Selection Committee to be a good, discussable book, featuring well-developed characters who are challenged by issues in their lives with which readers can identify;

available in quantity at reasonable cost, in various media formats; written at a high school reading level; and varied in type from others previously selected.

The Book Selection Committee also seeks a book whose author or recognized experts on the author are willing to engage in discussion with readers at several events.

“Heartland” is a memoir tracing Smarsh’s life among the working poor. It explores how intergenerational poverty and life choices affect the lives of a Kansas farm family.

Smarsh has written about socioeconomic class, politics, and public policy for the Guardian, the New York Times, the Texas Observer, Pacific Standard, the Economic Hardship Reporting Project, and many other publications. A recent Joan Shorenstein Fellow at Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government and a former professor of nonfiction writing, Smarsh is a frequent speaker on economic inequality and media narratives

relating this topic. She lives in Kansas, and “Heartland” is her first book.

This year’s OBOC regional campaign represents collaboration between a total of 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and York counties and their community partners. Many individual libraries participate in surrounding central Pennsylvania counties.

Everyone is welcome to read and discuss the book. Reading Group Guide and related materials will be listed online beginning in January 2020.

Reading campaign organizers encourage residents to read the book during January in preparation to attend free programs and discussions that will be held at public libraries beginning in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month.

Participating libraries will stock copies of the book that can be borrowed free of charge beginning in January 2020.

Program schedules for book discussion groups, author lectures, and other activities will be available at all participating public libraries and throughout the community. This information may be accessed online.

YCCF Honors Professional Advisers To celebrate their contributions to creating a vibrant York County, York County Community Foundation (YCCF) inducted Leon Butler and Donald Dellinger Jr. into its Professional Advisor Recognition Society at an event on Oct. 3 at the Heritage Hills Resort. Induction into the society allows the YCCF to recognize and thank local accountants, attorneys, financial planners, investment advisers, and trust officers for their efforts in promoting charitable giving with their clients through endowment with the YCCF. Butler is an accountant with Rotz & Stonesifer P.C., and Dellinger was an accountant with RKL prior to his retirement.

Agricultural Society, Butler was a strong advocate for the creation of the York County Agricultural Society Foundation Endowed Fund at YCCF. He knew a fund at the foundation would create a steady stream of funding to organize the York Fair. Butler has also introduced YCCF to several clients.

Dellinger has been a friend of the foundation since its formative years. As a CPA, he shared his professional expertise as the chair of the foundation’s finance, audit, and investment committees and he served two separate terms as a board member. Dellinger was hands-on in his support during the growth of the foundation, overseeing every check, every gift, every

Alumni Chorus Lions’ Holiday Plans Concert Village Slated The Spring Grove Alumni Chorus will present its 19th annual Christmas concert, titled “Christmas in Our Home Town,” on Sunday, Dec. 1, at 4 p.m. in the auditorium at Spring Grove Area Middle School, Old Hanover Road, Spring Grove. The concert will include selections by the instrumental ensemble and the chorus, as well as several combined numbers.
