“The Nutcracker” Performances Scheduled Under the artistic direction of Lori Garling, the Midstate Ballet of Greater York Dance will present the holiday classic “The Nutcracker” on Saturday, Dec. 8, at 7 p.m. and Sunday, Dec. 9, at 2 p.m. at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York. “The Nutcracker” was written by E.T.A. Hoffman in 1816. The holiday ballet tradition takes place in two acts and tells the story of a Christmas Eve in the 1800s at the home of young Clara and her family during their holiday party. A mysterious magician, Drosselmeyer, makes a surprise visit and presents Clara with a unique Nutcracker doll. Thus begins the magical journey of Clara and her Nutcracker prince from a battle between toy soldiers and mice to the Kingdom of Snow and the Land of Sweets. In celebration of Midstate Ballet’s 20th anniversary of performing “The Nutcracker,” the Midstate Orchestra will be led by conductor Dr. Willis Rapp. Rapp has served on the faculty

of many universities and retired in 2013 from Kutztown University. He has conducted the Reading Pops Orchestra since 2000. Greater York Dance received a Cultural Alliance Creative Impact Award community grant to assist in funding the orchestra this season. Guest dancers from Puerto Rico will share the stage with Midstate Ballet dancers and perform in the roles of Snow King, Spanish dancers, attendees in the party scene, Sugarplum and Cavalier. This year, Georgia Zengerle will play the role of Clara. She is a fifth-grade student in the West Shore School District. Reserved seat tickets may be purchased at www.appell center.org or 717-846-1111 or at the box office. Greater York Dance aims to provide positive, healthy and enriching dance experiences to the people of the southcentral Pennsylvania region. Students of all levels, ages and abilities may choose programs of interest according to their dance priority with no regard to their ability to pay.

Big Brothers Big Sisters of York & Adams Counties, along with more than 270 Big Brothers Big Sisters affiliates across the country, recently unveiled a new look and brand repositioning with a goal of recruiting more diverse volunteers. Months of research, including focus groups with potential mentors, as well as current mentors, mentees, donors, staff members, and leadership members, showed that the brand was not effectively connecting with younger, prospective mentors or conveying the urgent mission of Big Brothers Big Sisters. The organization is intentionally pivoting from messages of the importance of mentoring to messages of the urgent need for the adults in the community to step up to defend the potential of every child. The mission will remain the same, as will the core model of building bridges in communities by connecting one adult with one child and supporting that match at every stage, but the organization will focus on a child’s potential and adults’ role in helping children achieve their best possible futures. Additionally, in the coming year, Big Brothers Big Sisters of York and Adams Counties will transition to a new, modern,

Contact Lens Safety Tips Posted According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC), an estimated 45 million people in the United States wear contact lenses. Many consumers may not be aware that contact lenses are medical devices and are regulated by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) through the Federal Food, Drug, and Cosmetic Act. Additionally, the FDA states that contact lenses are not over-the-counter (OTC) devices and companies that sell them as such are misbranding the device and violating Federal Trade Commission (FTC) regulations by selling contact lenses without having a valid prescription. Prevent Blindness, a nonprofit eye health organization, recommends several tips for contact lens care. Individuals should always

visit an eye doctor to be fitted for contact lenses before use. Contact lenses should always be worn under the supervision of an eye doctor. Before handling contact lenses, hands should be washed with soap and water, then rinsed and dried with a lint-free towel. Contact with water should be minimized, including removing lenses before going swimming or in a hot tub. Individuals should never sleep in contact lenses unless authorized by an eye doctor, as this may increase the risk of infection, according to a new report from the CDC. Contact lenses should not be rinsed with or stored in water (tap or sterile water). Contact lenses should be worn and replaced according to

the schedule prescribed by an eye care professional. The contact lens case should be kept clean and replaced regularly, at least every three months. Old solution should not be reused or “topped off” in the lens case. A cracked or damaged lens case should not be used. Lens cases can be a source of contamination and infection. Individuals should never trade or share lenses. Contact lenses should be removed, if the eyes become red, irritated, or painful. If vision issues continue, individuals should contact an eye doctor immediately. For more information on contact lens safety, readers may call 800331-2020 or visit www.preventblindness.org/wearing-contact-lenses.

Students Learn About Nature Fifth-grade students from Lancaster and York counties recently gathered at Columbia River Park to take part in the Canoemobile program from Wilderness Inquiry, a Minnesotabased organization that connects people to the natural world through shared outdoor experiences. The Canoemobile program was held for students from Oct. 3 to 5, and a public session was offered on Oct. 5. A homeschool session took place on Oct. 4. When river conditions permitted, some students were able to paddle on the Susquehanna River in 24-foot canoes. They received instruction in canoeing and water safety. On land, all students participated in field studies, learning about the science, history, geography, and culture in their home towns, including the historical significance of the Captain John Smith Chesapeake National Historic Trail. They took part in team-building activities and visited three stations: “Susquehannock Indians,” presented by Paul Nevin from

Susquehanna Heritage; “Storm Water and Pollution Impacts on the Susquehanna River Watershed,” presented by Pam Goddard of the National Park Conservation Association; and “Wildlife in the Susquehanna River,” presented by Curtis Sherwood from Samuel Lewis State Park. The Chesapeake Conservancy and Chesapeake Bay Office of the National Park Service also collaborated to bring the Chesapeake Roving Ranger to the event on Oct. 3. The National Park Service provided funding and staff support for the program, and the East York Rotary Club provided funding and volunteers. The State Museum of Pennsylvania provided a dugout canoe. The participating students were from Wrightsville, Canadochly, and Kreutz Creek elementary schools in Eastern York School District; Columbia Middle School - Taylor Campus in Columbia Borough School District; and Friendship Elementary in Southern York County School District.

Event Supports YWCA Programs More than 400 walkers helped raise more than $92,000 at this year’s Walk a Mile in Her Shoes in York city to provide services to victims of domestic abuse, sexual assault and human trafficking at YWCA York’s ACCESS York, Still Waters (Hanover) and Victim Assistance Center. Participants donned women’s shoes to walk approximately 1 mile in an effort to raise awareness and funds for YWCA York’s victim services. The money raised will help the organization provide a 24-hour hotline, counseling, legal services, emergency shelter, housing and community education in York County. Awards were given to the top fundraising team, individual and sponsor. This year’s top team is Purple Pumps, top individual is Keith Noll, and top sponsor team is WellSpan Health. This year’s event included a Kick Up Your Heels pre-party, a proclamation by the York County Board of Commissioners for October as Domestic Violence Awareness Month, YWCA York’s Temple Guard performance, and an after party including food trucks and music. For more information, readers may call YWCA York at 717-8452631 or visit www.ywcayork.org.

Hospital Posts Traffic Changes WellSpan York Hospital is now experiencing traffic changes on its campus as a result of a construction project near the hospital’s main entrance, effective Oct. 15. The project at the north entrance of the hospital requires the partial closure of the traffic circle adjacent to the main entrance. All vehicle traffic approaching the main entrance of the hospital from Rathton Road will be rerouted through the first entrance of the main visitor parking garage, just across from the Medical Education Pavilion. Traffic will exit the garage to the main entrance. Motorists will then be routed around the open portion of the traffic circle, back through the garage and out toward the Rathton Road exit. In addition, the rabbittransit bus stop as well as the stop for the shuttle running between the hospital and the Apple Hill Health Campus is temporarily relocated from the vicinity of the main entrance to the Emergency Department entrance. The traffic detour and related changes are expected to be in place for about a year.
