Library Sets Free Service Mason-Dixon Public Library, 250 Bailey Drive, Stewartstown, will host a free service to photograph coins and other small valuables on Saturday, Nov. 17, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The photos can be used for insurance and/or police recovery.

The service will be provided

by Fred Beihl, an auctioneer and appraiser. Beihl was the victim of the theft of several rare coins and used photographs to aid in

the recovery of the coins.

The free photo session will be limited to 10 small items per household. Attendees will need to bring their own flash drive.

Individuals who do not have a flash drive can have their photos numerically stored by Beihl for future insurance or police recovery needs.

Annual Juried Exhibition Planned York Art Association and the Prospect Hill Cemetery and Cremation Gardens will hold the 48th annual Open Juried Exhibition from Sunday, Nov. 4, to Saturday, Dec. 15, in the Nancy M. Penn State Cooperative Extension in York County is accepting applications for the fourth Master Watershed Steward Class, which will begin in early March 2019. The program was launched in 2016 in York County, and York County currently has 56 Master Watershed Stewards.

After completing the 40-hour course, trainees must volunteer 50 hours for Penn State Cooperative Extension during their first year. Master Watershed Stewards in York County will volunteer in the community to improve the health of local streams, rivers, and other natural resources through activities such as organizing educational events, organizing stream cleanups, designing demonstration rain gardens, teaching adults and children about the environment, monitoring streams, and working with municipal officials to plant riparian buffers.

The wedding of Cheri Tice and Michael Lewis Smith took place on Oct. 21 at Heritage Hills Golf Resort in York. The Rev. Bernard Seigman officiated at the 2 p.m. ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Charles Tice Jr. of Harrisburg and Kelly Tice of Windsor.

She graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 2003 and Yorktowne Business Institute in 2005. She is employed by Captain Bob’s Crabs in Railroad.

The groom is the son of Glenn and Carol Smith of Red Lion. He graduated from Red Lion Area Senior High School in 1996 and Penn State York Campus in 2002. He is employed by the United States Post Office in Red Lion.

flower design of champagne and blush accented by a blush belt of flowers across the waistline.

The Elks Lodge 213 - York, along with York Professional Fire Fighters Association, will present the first Froggy for Firefighters concert on Sunday, Nov. 18, at 7 p.m. in the Capitol Theatre at the Appell Center for the Performing Arts, 50 N. George St., York.

The concert will feature country performing artist Scotty McCreery, along with Carly Pearce and singer-songwriter Kayla Kroh of York. Two guitars signed by the three musicians will be given away in drawings at the event.

All proceeds will be donated to the Fuel Their Fire Scholarship Fund in honor of the 35 York County firefighters who lost their lives in the line of duty over the past 100 years. The scholarship fund was created by the York Professional Fire Fighters Association.

Following the deaths of firefighters Ivan Flanscha and Zachary Anthony, York Elks Lodge 213 past exalted ruler Ron Lewis had the idea to start an annual event to raise funds for York County firefighters. Barrick has been involved in government relations for six years and is responsible for PASBO’s advocacy efforts in Harrisburg. She is recognized for her recent efforts on behalf of public schools in the development of the new basic education and special education funding formulas and working with the PlanCon Advisory Committee to re-establish a program to assist schools with building construction and maintenance. She is a graduate of Hamilton College and obtained her law degree from Quinnipiac University School of Law. PASBO is a statewide organization of 3,000 members and provides professional development, leadership, research, consulting, and advocacy on behalf of finance and operations professionals in the state’s public school system. Police Department Receives Award Bell Socialization Services Inc. has recognized the Northern York Regional Police Department as the recipient of the Pauline Whitacre Community Services Award. Presented to an individual or group that

provides time and resources to enhance Bell’s mental health programs, the award was received at Bell’s fall annual meeting on Oct. 2 at St. Matthew Lutheran Church in York.

The Northern York Regional Police Department has worked with Bell’s assertive community treatment (ACT) team on many occasions over the past year, meeting staff members at client homes, parking lots, and stores to help coordinate the safety of mental health clients. Bell recognized the officers for exhibiting compassion and understanding when clients displayed extreme psychotic behaviors and for working collaboratively with staff members and respectfully with clients at all times. ACT program coordinator Christine Adkins nominated the police department for the award.

Law Enforcement Wave Started Municipal law enforcement agencies throughout southcentral Pennsylvania have joined the Pennsylvania State Police and more than 200 municipal agencies to conduct the first targeted aggressive driving enforcement wave through Sunday, Nov. 25. As part of the Aggressive Driving Enforcement and Education Project, the first wave aims to reduce the number of aggressive drivingrelated crashes, injuries and deaths on roadways throughout the state.

Any aggressive driver stopped by police will receive a ticket.

The enforcement wave focuses on red light running, the Steer Clear law, tailgating and speeding. Motorists exhibiting other unsafe behaviors such as driving too fast for conditions, following too closely or practicing other aggressive actions will also be cited.

Ministry Announces Temporary Relocation The York CARES (Community-Assisted Resources and Essential Services) for the Homeless Coffee Spot is temporarily relocating to Heidelberg United Church of Christ, 47 W. Philadelphia St., York, on

Thursday, Nov. 15. The Coffee Spot, which provides free coffee, community and conversation to neighbors and members of the York community, has been housed in the Salvation Army multipurpose room on South Duke Street throughout the summer. The Salvation Army is in need of that space to provide holiday services and events and closed to the Coffee Spot on Nov. 9.

The Coffee Spot will open with extended hours from 12:30 to 3:30 p.m. on Mondays through Fridays unless there is a holiday or if snow causes closure. Visitors and guests to the Coffee Spot should use the church’s rear entrance, located in the alley off of Beaver Street. Guests and visitors are invited to share in coffee and other hot beverages, snacks, fruit, water and a once-amonth celebration of community. All items and information are free.

One Book, One Community Selection Posted Representatives from area libraries have announced the selection of “Killers of the Flower Moon: The Osage Murders and the Birth of the FBI” by David Grann as the focus of the 2019 One Book, One Community (OBOC) campaign. The book was chosen through a public vote throughout August. Voters chose from a narrowed-down list of five books determined by the book selection committee. In addition to Grann’s book, the ballot included “Ordinary Grace” by William Kent Krueger, “Ginny Moon” by Benjamin Ludwig, “A Hope More Powerful Than the Sea” by Melissa Fleming, and “The Hate U Give” by Angie Thomas.

Judges choose books that have well-developed characters who are challenged by issues in their lives with which readers can identify; are available in quantity at reasonable cost in various media formats, such as paperback, large print, audio, CD, DVD, or video; are written at a high school reading level; vary in type from others previously selected; and are written by authors, or recognized experts on authors, who would be willing to engage in discussion with readers at several events.

“Killers of the Flower Moon” focuses on the nearly two dozen murders that occurred between 1920 and 1924 on the Osage tribal lands in Oklahoma during what became known as the Osage Reign of Terror.

Grann is a staff writer at The New Yorker and the author of “The Devil and Sherlock Holmes” and “The Lost City of Oz,” which has been translated into more than 20 languages. His stories have appeared in many anthologies of American writing, and he has written for numerous periodicals.

This year’s OBOC regional campaign represents collaboration between 40 libraries in Cumberland, Dauphin, Perry, and York counties and the libraries’ community partners.

Many individual libraries in surrounding central Pennsylvania counties will participate.

Reading campaign organizers encourage all residents to read the book during January 2019 in preparation to attend free programs and discussions that will be held at public libraries beginning in February, which is designated as both Library Lovers’ Month and Book Lovers’ Month.

Participating libraries will stock copies of the book that may be borrowed free of charge beginning in January.

Discussion questions and related materials will be available online beginning in January. Program schedules for book discussion groups, author lectures, and other activities will be available at all participating public libraries and throughout the community.

To promote recycling and celebrate America Recycles Day on Thursday, Nov. 15, the York County Solid Waste Authority (YCSWA) is sponsoring puppet show assembly programs in 14 York County elementary schools. The recycling-themed program is titled “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles.� Students will see ordinary household items recycled into characters who promote care of the environment through reduction of waste, reuse, and recycling of materials.

The assembly programs will run through Friday, Nov. 16.

Performances run approximately 45 minutes and feature audience participation. YCSWA offered to sponsor up to 20 program performances for any

school in York County with students in grades one through six.

Fourteen schools responded to the offer and are receiving “Magic Pots and Recycled Bottles� performances at no charge.

The schools include Friendship Elementary, Kreutz Creek Elementary, Loganville Elementary, Manheim Elementary, Newberry Elementary, North Salem Elementary, Red Mill Elementary, Roundtown Elementary, St. Patrick’s, St. Rose of Lima, Southern Elementary, Valley View Elementary, Wrightsville Elementary, and Yorkshire Elementary.
