Get Away To Jim Thorpe With a storied past, the quaint charms of a European village and the outdoor recreation of a mountain sports destination, the town of Jim Thorpe is a must-see town tucked into the Pocono Mountains. Jim Thorpe is a destination rich with history and is often called the “Switzerland of America” because of its scenic views. Its unique Victorian architecture pays homage to its roots of

coal mining and industrialism, which today house unique shops and eateries, museums and galleries and popular entertainment venues. With its nostalgic feel coupled with unique history and exciting recreation, Jim Thorpe is a favorite for weekend getaways for many types of travelers. But to truly understand Jim Thorpe’s appeal, one must first look at its roots. Originally named Mauch Chunk, the town was pivotal to America’s industrial

development as a main transport area for coal mining. The coal mined throughout what’s now known as the Pocono Mountains was transported from Mauch Chunk to Eastern markets via the Lehigh River, which helped to build the local economy and establish the community as an independent leader in a growing industrial market. Many of the transportation systems of the era, including canals, locks, dams and early gravity railroads, are still a strong part of the community’s

culture today. The focus on coal and modern transportation methods brought early 19th-century entrepreneurs to the area, including Asa Packer, a Connecticut native and carpenter by trade. Packer realized the opportunity the coal region held and used his skills to build and repair canal boats to transport coal, eventually establishing the firm of A. & R. W. Packer, which built canal boats and locks for the Lehigh Coal & Navigation Company. Packer and his family settled in Mauch Chunk. Packer’s sights were set even higher on finding ways to use technology to transport the region’s rich coal resources. In the mid-1850s, Packer took control of a railway line from Mauch Chunk to Easton and connected railway lines to the coal mines in Luzerne and Schuylkill counties. Known as the Lehigh Valley Railroad Company, the

line eventually extended into the Susquehanna Valley and New York state to connect with the Erie Railroad, effectively growing the region’s industrial reach even farther and establishing Mauch Chunk as a center of industrial commerce, tourism and entertainment. Today, visitors can get a glimpse of Packer’s success with a visit to the Asa Packer Mansion, a National Historic

Landmark that overlooks the Lehigh River and Mauch Chunk National Historic District and that remains much like it did when first constructed in 1861 as a memorial to Packer and his accomplishments. Visitors can learn more about Packer’s successes as a businessman and his work as a philanthropist through guided tours held throughout the day at the 17room Italianate villa. If you want to experience a little of what it was really like to live as a Packer you can stay at the Harry Packer Mansion Inn, just down the street from the Asa Packer Mansion. Harry Packer, the elder Packer’s son, lived in the Victorian mansion, complete with 15foot ceilings, marble fireplaces and gilded mirrors reflecting the elegance of the Victorian age. Guests can enjoy period furnishings and artwork at the inn and even take part in special wine tastings or murder mystery weekends, a nod to the fact that the home was the inspiration for Walt Disney World’s “Haunted Mansion.” Take a self-guided walking or Segway tour to learn more about some of the historic See Jim Thorpe pg 5

Jim Thorpe from pg 4 downtown. Visit the Mauch Chunk Museum and Cultural Center to learn more about the town’s history, where there’s even a working model of the Switchback Railroad, one of the very earliest in the region. Any tour of the village must include Historic Stone Row, a series of stone row houses Asa Packer built for his engineers and foremen of the Lehigh Valley Railroad. You’ll also find Victorian buildings along Broadway now housing cute shops offering everything from handmade soaps and pottery to wine tasting rooms, antiques and art galleries. Don’t miss Somersault Letterpress, a vintage letterpress and creative studio, or Rainbow’s End, a quaint corner candy shop sure to amaze kids (and kids at heart) Outdoors enthusiasts can enjoy an entirely different aspect of Jim Thorpe, no matter what the season. After all,

the many railways and waterways of the area’s storied past make for excellent outdoor recreation today. Take a 9mile downhill bike trip on the Switchback Trail to the picturesque Broadway in downtown Jim Thorpe. Bike or hike through the Lehigh Gorge Rail Trail for some truly spectacular scenery, or visit any of the numerous local trailheads accessible from town. Take to the water for a challenging whitewater rafting ride or take a scenic kayak paddle through the gorge and surrounding waterways. Several outfitters are available to arrange tours to explore the region’s waters. Naturalists may want to spend a relaxing afternoon at the Bear Mountain Butterfly Sanctuary. Romantic small-town charm, entrepreneurship, a legendary past and scenic vistas all make their home in the Pocono Mountains’ Jim Thorpe. Discover this unique spot for a weekend getaway in the Switzerland of America. Visit whereand when.com/jim-thorpe for more on Jim Thorpe, including the Jail House Museum, which is said to be haunted by the Ghosts of the Molly Maguires. Note: Some of the attractions mentioned in the article may be closed for the season or have altered hours due to COVID-19. Please check websites for days and hours of operation.

The Asa Packer Mansion stands today as it did when the last member of the Packer family lived there. Due to COVID-19, tours have been temporarily suspended until 2021.

YCCF Initiative To Address Ageism Recently, the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) Embracing Aging initiative announced a new movement in York County to disrupt negative thinking on aging. YCCF seeks to remind the community that older people have accumulated years of life lessons and offer significant skills, talents, education, and resources that enhance the community. The new initiative encourages people to care about and respect everyone, regardless of age. YCCF is working with community partners to create an agefriendly York County. The Embracing Aging initiative includes free resources for employers, organizations, civic clubs, agencies, and individuals to increase awareness about ageism and how to make an impact on ageism in the county. A video designed to reframe ageist statements is available as well as an assessment for people to identify their own age bias. To access these resources and learn more about the initiative, readers may visit www. embracingaging.org.

Royer’s To Collect Holiday Cards, Coloring Pages Royer’s Flowers & Gifts is collecting holiday cards and coloring pages for service members and veterans throughout November in each of its stores. Royer’s will present the collected items to the American Red Cross’ Holidays for Heroes program. Cards and coloring pages may be dropped off at any Royer’s store during normal business hours. Face coverings are required. Free coloring pages can be downloaded at www.royers.com/heroes. The Red Cross offers several guidelines for preparing the cards. People should use generic salutations such as “Dear Service Member” or “Dear Veteran.” When writing in the card, people should express reasons why they are thankful for the service members or veterans. Those

who have a personal connection, such as a family member who served, should add that information to the card. The cards should not be overtly religious, but messages such as “Merry Christmas” or “God Bless You” are acceptable. Inserts such as glitter, photos and business cards should not be included. Also, the cards should not include personal information such as telephone numbers or home or email addresses. However, the cards should be signed with the giver’s name. Family-owned Royer’s has 16 stores in Berks, Cumberland, Dauphin, Franklin, Lancaster, Lebanon and York counties, including one Stephenson’s Flowers & Gifts location in Harrisburg.

CBF Awards Contracts For Trees posals (RFP) and awarded bids to seven companies for a total of 210,000 trees, stakes, and shelters for 2021. RFPs for trees have been issued for single years since 2018, but contracting two years ahead to 2022 is unique for CBF. Four companies were awarded future contracts for a total of 500,000 trees for 2022. Those companies are Aquatic Resource Restoration Company in York County, Musser Forests in Indiana County, Octoraro Native Plant Nursery in Lancaster County, and American Native Plants in Baltimore County, Md. All four companies were also among the seven that received contracts for 2021. Funds provided through the contracts will help some of the companies expand their operations. CBF noted that the security of its forward contracting made the latest RFPs attractive to a conservative industry still affected by the housing crisis of 2008 when there was little need for nursery stock and services. The economic benefits of forward contracting also extend to contractors that will do the planting work and maintain the planting sites, said CBF’s Brenda Sieglitz, who manages the partnership. Sieglitz added that the new contracts will also increase the diversity of native trees for planting, as CBF has ordered a mix of species. As part

of its efforts to plant a variety of trees, CBF responded to input from statewide organizations and is asking for trees that are hard to find. CBF launched the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership in 2018, focused on Pennsylvania’s Clean Water Blueprint goal of planting 95,000 acres of forested buffers by the end of 2025. Amid COVID-19 restrictions, 84,000 of 95,000 trees distributed for spring planting in 2020 went into the ground. The remaining 11,000 trees are being kept in partner greenhouses and will grow into larger stock for future plantings. For fall plantings, about 47,000 trees were scheduled to See CBF Awards pg 10

Attention Back Pain and Sciatica Sufferers!

Back Pain and Sciatica Workshop Reveals How to Naturally Heal Back Pain and Sciatica For Good. Do you suffer with back pain or leg pain when you stand or walk? Do you have pain when you sit for long periods or drive? Do you experience pain, numbness or tingling into your butt, groin or down your leg? Does your back ever “go out” if you move the wrong way? Are you afraid your pain will get worse if you don’t do anything about it? If you have answered YES to any of the above questions (or have a stubborn spouse who is in denial) – the Lower Back and Sciatica Workshop may be a life changing event for you… “Before coming to Madden, I was having pain in my hip and leg from Sciatica, which impacted my daily activities, such as sitting, standing and walking. I was not sleeping well, and could not get comfortable. Now my pain has decreased and I’m now able to move freely and confidently, and my pain level has dropped and I can now sleep well.” -Denise G. Hello, Back pain and sciatica can completely ruin your life… I’ve seen it many times. ✔ It can make you lean on the shopping cart when walking through the grocery store (how embarrassing)… ✔ It can take your focus away on enjoying your life… like spending time with your children or grandchildren… ✔ It can mess up your work or force you to do a job you don’t want to do… ✔ It can ruin your travel plans… ✔ And it can take away your ability to live life… having to rely on others… or to wait for you to sit down for a minute. And less movement and enjoying of life can lead to depression, increased stress and a sedentary lifestyle (mostly sitting… not moving much) which leads to bigger health problems… and life problems. Here at Madden Physical Therapy the Sciatica and Lower Back Specialists have helped 1000’s of people who have suffered needlessly with lower back pain and sciatica… it’s our specialty.

So by request, I’m hosting a Sciatica and Lower Back Pain Workshop here at Madden Physical Therapy in Shrewsbury in the Giant Shopping Center (right next to AAA) on Wednesday, November 18th at 7:00 PM.

The Chesapeake Bay Foundation (CBF) has stepped up its efforts to ensure that it will be able to plant millions of trees in the coming years. The efforts also benefit local businesses and streamside buffers in Pennsylvania. CBF, which coordinates the Keystone 10 Million Trees Partnership, is spending approximately $2.6 million for 710,000 trees, shelters, and stakes to supply plantings through 2022. Growers and related businesses in Pennsylvania and Maryland that provide trees, shrubs, and materials are guaranteed revenue through this forward contracting, and the partnership will receive the variety, quantity and quality of trees, shrubs, and materials it needs to continue its drive to plant 10 million trees in Pennsylvania by the end of 2025. Since 2018, cumulative efforts by CBF, the partnership and others across Pennsylvania have planted roughly more than 1.74 million trees. The partnership is made up of 147 national, regional, state, and local partners. CBF issued requests for pro-

be delivered in September to pickup points. Due to spring cancellations, the fall 2020 number of trees is more than double what was planted in the fall of 2019. Adding 10 million new trees alongside streams, streets, and other priority landscapes in Pennsylvania’s portion of the bay watershed would accelerate the Keystone State as much as twothirds toward the 95,000acre target, according to CBF. Trees are among the most cost-effective tools for cleaning and protecting waterways by filtering and absorbing polluted runoff, stabilizing streambanks, and improving soil quality. Placed in parks, municipal properties, and other urban and suburban settings, trees absorb and clean stormwater, reduce flooding, and help restore abandoned mine land.

The York New Salem Lions Club, a part of District 14-C, awarded scholarships to Ellie Glass and Christopher Wilhide on July 22. Both honorees are 2020 graduates of Spring Grove Area High School, and both have plans to pursue careers in the field of health care. Glass is currently enrolled in the biology/chemistry undergraduate program at McDaniel College, Westminster, Md. Her goal is to becomea physician. Wilhide is enrolled in the biology health professionals

undergraduate program at Marywood University, Scranton. He intends to become a physician assistant. The York New Salem Lions Club Memorial Scholarship program was established in 1980. As of 2020, the club has awarded 75 scholarships totaling $72,900. Scholarship applicants and awardees are graduating high school seniors who reside within the Spring Grove Area School District and attend Spring Grove Area Senior High School, York Catholic High School, or York County School of Technology.

Area News Anchor Sets Retirement WGAL 8 announced recently that longtime anchor Ron Martin will retire on Wednesday, Nov. 25, after more than 37 years with the news station. Martin has been a member of the WGAL News 8 team since 1983. He rose through the ranks to become the station’s main weeknight news anchor in 2000. Martin currently anchors WGAL News 8 at 5 p.m., the Emmy awardwinning WGAL News 8 at 6 p.m., and WGAL News 8 at 11 p.m. Martin led WGAL’s coverage of some of the biggest stories in the station’s history, including the Hanover race riots, the 9/11 terrorist attacks, and, most recently, the COVID-19 pandemic. This November, WGAL News 8 will look back at the most memorable moments from Martin’s career at the station. These news stories will air during the news at 5 p.m. The celebration will culminate with Martin’s final broadcast on Nov. 25. “WGAL was my dream job and I’ve enjoyed every one of the 37 years I’ve been here,” said Martin, “but as an anchorman, you work a lot of nights and now it’s time for me

to spend more time with my family.” Martin is a York native who began his career in broadcast journalism as a desk assistant at NBC News in Washington, D.C. After graduating from Howard University with a Bachelor of Arts in communications, he returned home to the Susquehanna Valley to work as a reporter and news announcer at WSBA radio in York. Martin joined WGAL 8 and the NewsCenter 8 team in 1983. In 1985, he was named weekend news anchor. Two years later, Martin was named a weeknight news anchor on WGAL. Among the many awards he has received during his career in broadcast journalism, Martin is a six-time Emmy award winner. He has also been honored for his many community service contributions in the central Pennsylvania region. His efforts in this area have been recognized by scores of organizations, including the state of Pennsylvania, the cities of York and Harrisburg, the Harrisburg and York chapters of the NAACP, the school districts of York and Harrisburg, and the Lancaster Urban League.
