York County Commissioner Chris Reilly (center) read a proclamation honoring Cpl. Alvin T. Rehmeyer. American Legion Riders member Butch Hensel (left) and Post 455 commander Bobby O’Farrell also took part in the ceremony. Members of the American Legion Riders (ALR) Stewart Post 455 held a memorial flag line ceremony on Sept. 29 at St. John Lutheran Church cemetery in Stewartstown in honor of Cpl. Alvin T. Rehmeyer on the 100th anniversary of Rehmeyer’s death in World War I. American Legion Post 455 commander Bobby O’Farrell led the tribute to Rehmeyer. Rehmeyer’s family was represented by Myrna Hyson-Ross, niece of Rehmeyer; Duane Hyson; and others. O’Farrell read a tribute to Rehmeyer that was entered into the congressional record on Sept. 20 by U.S. Rep. Scott Perry. The Stewart American Legion hosted the funeral of Rehmeyer in 1919 at the St. John Cemetery. The entire town was closed for the funeral and burial. York County Commissioner Chris Reilly presented Hyson-Ross with a U.S. flag that was flown over the Capitol in Washington, D.C., honoring Rehmeyer at the request of Perry. O’Farrell presented Hyson-Ross with a World War I Victory Medal. O’Farrell also presented numbered 100th anniversary

American Legion commander commemorative coins to several family members. Reilly also presented HysonRoss with a proclamation from the York County commissioners honoring Rehmeyer. Reilly spoke of the commitment and courage of Rehmeyer, detailing Rehmeyer’s journey from Red Lion to Camp Meade in Fort Meade, Md., to his service in France. On Sept. 26, 1918, Rehmeyer was declared missing in action following an attack during the Meuse-Argonne Offensive, at the time the largest offensive in American military history. Rehmeyer’s fate was unknown until March 20, 1919, when his gravesite was located near the town of Montfaucon, France. Rehmeyer is one of the 1,151 soldiers of the 79th Division who gave their lives in defense of the United States and its allies during World War I. Following the ceremony, Rehmeyer family members and Legion Riders members reviewed historical documents, including Rehmeyer’s school report cards and other artifacts, at the cemetery.

Students Win Scholarships This past May, the Christopher Columbus Scholarship committee awarded a total of $10,000 in scholarship monies to five students from across the York County area at its annual fundraising dinner. The scholarship recipients were Riyana Owens from Dallastown Area High School, Rachel Lyter from York Catholic High School, Maddy Miller from Kennard-Dale High School, Catalina Feistritzer from Central York High School, and Jacob Taylor from York Suburban High School. All students intend to pursue four-year degrees at areas colleges or universities.

Band Celebrates Anniversary, Honors Member The Brodbeck’s Band celebrated its 140th anniversary this year and honored bass drummer Dale Gladfelter for his 70th year in the band. Gladfelter was recognized during the band concert at the St. Paul’s (Zeigler’s) Lutheran Church’s picnic near Seven Valleys. Dale represents the fourth generation of Gladfelters to play in the band’s drum section. In 1878, when the band was founded, Ephraim Gladfelter played in the drum section. He was followed by his son, Luther, and Luther’s son, Danny.
