Take the “Pet Out of “Petrified Our NEW

“FEAR FREE

Program Means Fewer Stressed Pets at the Vet! “A fearful pet is an unhappy pet, and when pets are unhappy, so are their owners and so is the veterinary staff,â€? says Dr. Walters, one of Patton’s associate vets. “We love animals and hate to see them in distress. Our goal in creating a fear free environment is to make your pet’s visit go as smoothly and as comfortably as possible. Reducing fear makes for calmer, happier pets, better exams, and makes future visits easier when pets have a positive experience.â€? Procedures are performed wherever pets are most comfortable such as on the oor or in their owners’ laps as part of the hospital’s “Fear Freeâ€? protocol.

P.E.O. Chapter CF recently presented Program for Continuing Education (P.C.E.) grants to two central Pennsylvania women. The recipients are Anita Garber of Bainbridge and Sandra Dougherty of York. Chapter CF recommended both recipients for the grants. The P.C.E. was established in 1973 to provide need-based grants to women in the United States and Canada whose education has been interrupted and who find it necessary to return to school to support themselves and, if applicable, their families. P.C.E. grants usually range from $1,000 to $5,000. Garber and Dougherty each qualified for their grants on the basis of need, in honor of their returning to school to continue their education, and in recognition of their desire to improve their ability to support themselves. Garber, a student at Messiah College, is taking courses to earn a Bachelor of Arts degree in music worship. She plans to pursue graduate studies and eventually earn a master’s degree and a doctorate in music. Dougherty studies at Elizabethtown College and is majoring in business administration. She also plans to pursue graduate studies and eventually earn a master’s degree and a doctorate

Susquehannock High School swimmer Logan McFadden recently placed at the 2018 YMCA Long Course National Swimming Championships at the University of Maryland in College Park, Md. McFadden, who is a junior at Susquehannock, swims for the Warriors and the York YMCA. McFadden competed in five long-distance events during the meet, which took place from July 30 through Aug. 3. He placed higher than ever before at the national level, earning fifth in the 800 free, sixth in the 1500 free, eighth in the 400 free, 10th in the 200 free, and 16th in 200 individual medley. It was his second time competing in the

YMCA Long Course National Championships and his fourth time completing in YMCA National Swimming Championships overall. He plans to swim in the 2019 YMCA Short Course National Championships in April 2019 in Greensboro, N.C. McFadden has been swimming competitively for four and a half years. He trains daily at the York YMCA before school and after school from 4 to 7 p.m. in addition to practices from 8 to 11 a.m. on Saturdays. He commends his Susquehannock swim coach and teacher, Brian Wingert, for keeping him motivated. Following high school, McFadden hopes to swim at a large Division 1 university.

Danielle Simpson of New Freedom was one of 17 Widener University freshmen who recently completed a study abroad experience in Costa Rica. The group traveled from Aug. 12 to 19, arriving back in Pennsylvania two days before Widener freshman move-in day on Aug. 21. The immersion experience was part of the students’ enrollment in the freshmen seminar Sustainability and Cultural Competence and was led by biology professors Itzick Vatnick and Bruce Grant and associate professor of nursing Normajean Colby. While in Costa Rica, the group stayed at CARES 21, a property owned by Widener University. The students visited a dairy farm, a coffee roaster, a Costa Rican university, and tourism sites like the volcano Irazu and the La Paz Waterfalls Gardens Park. They also spent time discussing strategies for succeeding in college and began developing bonds with their new university peers. Simpson attended Susquehannock High School and is pursuing a degree in nursing.
