In conjunction with its homecoming activities, St. Paul (Hametown) Lutheran Church, 11894 Susquehanna Trail South, Glen Rock, will host a concert featuring the New Song Community Choir.

The public is invited to attend. The concert will be held in the sanctuary of the church on Sunday, Oct. 20, at 1:30 p.m.

Musicians from St. Paul will join the New Song Choir for a few selections. There is no admission charge; a freewill offering will be received to further the ministries of the New Song choir.

Guild Members Will Present Quilt Show

Enjoying A Taste Of The Valley

Quilting on the Line Quilt Guild will present its biennial quilt show at the Jarrettsville Volunteer Fire Company’s Jarrettsville Gardens, 2835 Federal Hill Road, Jarrettsville, Md., on Saturday, Nov. 2, from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Sunday, Nov. 3, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Members of the guild, who come from Harford and southern York counties, will exhibit their work from the last two years.

Traditional, contemporary, and art quilting will be displayed. The guild will also present Challenge Quilts, Mystery Quilts, Quilts of Valor, and Row by Row Quilts.

The event will also include a craft boutique, a silent auction, and vendors. Refreshments will be provided. There is an admission fee for both days that will include a free entry for a drawing for the quilt “Springtime Stars.”

Peg Dougherty of Pylesville, Md., will be the featured quilter.

Dougherty’s work has received national and international recognition. She is a repeat blueribbon winner at the Harford County Farm Fair, the Maryland State Fair, and international competitions. Dougherty challenges herself with each new

The Arthur Hufnagel Public Library, 32 Main St., Glen Rock, will host Taste of the Valley, its main fundraiser of the year, on Friday, Oct. 25.

Taste of the Valley will kick off at the library at 6 p.m. with a scavenger hunt and complimentary beverage.

At 7 p.m., the festivities will move just down the street to the historic Glen Rock Mill Inn for hors d’oeuvres and food stations, two free beverages, desserts, a jazz band, and silent auction of themed gift baskets.

Attendees will be able to tour the inn, including unoccupied guest rooms and suites.

Friends In Action International (FIA) has been named a 2019 Top-Rated Nonprofit by GreatNonprofits, an organization that allows people to share stories on its website about their experiences with more than 1.6 million charities and nonprofit organizations. The award is the based on the rating and number of reviews that FIA received from volunteers, donors, and aid recipients.

With headquarters in Middletown, FIA supports mission work in areas of limited infrastructure worldwide by using construction projects and other practical service to speed the message of the Gospel of Jesus Christ to people who have never heard it before.

“We are honored to be named a 2019 Top-Rated Nonprofit,” stated Tim Johnston, executive director for FIA. “We are excited about what God is doing through our efforts this year.”

Johnston shared that so far this year those efforts have included providing clean water to more than 20,000 West Africans, medical assistance to more than 1,200 people in Bolivia and Brazil, community transformation and life skills training for more than 1,400 people in Nicaragua, educational support to hundreds of residents in

Moldova and Papua New Guinea, opportunities to serve and experience a new culture to hundreds of local volunteers, and - most importantly - an opportunity for more than 215,000 people to hear the Gospel.

People who would like to hear more about the thousands of people in indigenous villages who are being transformed by the Gospel through outreaches led by FIA are invited to the 2019 Missions Banquet.

The banquet will take place on Friday, Nov. 1, at Best Western Premier The Central Hotel, 800 E. Park Drive, Harrisburg. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m., and a buffet dinner featuring beef tips, lemon herb chicken, assorted desserts, and more will be served at 6:20 p.m.

Guests will hear from keynote speaker Levi Pittman, an FIA leader for a water project for the NiVan people in Vanuatu, a Pacific island country. The evening will include a show of appreciation for volunteers, donors, and sponsors, as well as videos from the NiVan and Rama Cay people groups and testimonies from the field. Attendees will hear stories from the Messiah College student engineering team and students involved in The Collaboratory, a center for project-based learning at Messiah College.

Senior Center Posts Schedule 1 p.m. The knitting class will meet from 1 to 3 p.m.

Activities on Monday, Oct. 21, will include sewing machine tune-ups by appointment, dominoes at 9 a.m., and the Holy Cross Senior Luncheon at the church at 11:30 a.m. The crochet class will meet from 1 to 3 p.m., as will Sew for Vets. Pinochle will be played at 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Oct. 22, the Atlantic City trip will leave at 8 a.m., and the foot doctor will be on-site at 9 a.m. by appointment.

Railroad Schedules Halloween Trains On Saturdays, Oct. 19 and 26, the Stewartstown Railroad will run its annual Halloween trains.

Trains will depart from the Stewartstown Railroad Station, 21 W. Pennsylvania Ave., at 5:30, 6:30, and 7:30 p.m. This is the third consecutive year for the Halloween trains, since the railroad resumed big train operations.

Along the ride there will be a number of spooky, but not too scary, scenes. The different scenes will be designed and manned by volunteers from in

and around the Stewartstown area. Every child will receive treats.

The Stewartstown Railroad is an all-volunteer organization that is celebrating its 135th birthday, having been chartered in 1884. The railroad now operates as a tourist line, offering scheduled trains during the year and special trains for Easter, Halloween, and Christmas.

The York Halloween Parade, one of the area’s most beloved seasonal traditions, will march through downtown York for the 70th year on Sunday, Oct. 27, from 2 to 4 p.m.

The parade is made possible by the support of more than a dozen area businesses. Saved from extinction years ago by York Traditions Bank and Eventive (the event planning and production division of the York Revolution), the York Halloween Parade presented by York Traditions Bank will mark its anniversary with floats and entries themed around the parade’s seven decades.

Wyndridge Farm Extends Hours, Items Sought For Silent Auction Expands Cider Operations Wyndridge Farm, a Dallastown brewery, cidery, restaurant, and event venue, has announced extended restaurant hours and the addition of an on-site apple press.

The Restaurant at Wyndridge Farm, located at 885 S. Pleasant Ave., Dallastown, has set new extended hours. As of the beginning in October, patrons can dine at the restaurant at Wyndridge Farm on Tuesdays and Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 9 p.m.; Thursdays, Fridays, and Saturdays from 11:30 a.m. to 10 p.m.; and Sundays from 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. Sunday brunch will include an updated selection of offerings and will be available from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Wyndridge Farm has also announced that it now produces fresh cold-pressed cider with the addition of an on-site apple press. The apple press will enable Wyndridge to partner with area orchards, including Peter’s Orchards in Adams County, to

produce a wider variety of apples, tailored specifically for unique hard cider needs, including Bittersweet apples, a variety that is not typically found readily available on the East Coast.

Wyndridge will produce 3,000 gallons of cider per day, processing 800 bushels of apples per day using an accordion-style press and processing equipment, custom built for a more optimal production speed. The addition of the Wyndridge apple press is intended to increase the quality and flavor of cider blends through hand-selected apple varieties which will be juiced, immediately fermented, and canned at Wyndridge Farm.

Wyndridge will also provide custom press operations for cideries, wineries, distilleries, and beer makers entering the cider business in the Mid-Atlantic region. Tours of the apple pressing operation will be made available to groups. Future plans include making sparkling nonalcoholic cider. Wyndridge will also be pressing crabapples, peaches, and pears to make different hard

cider flavor options and increase the utilization of many different local fruits.

Brett Krosse, farm/cider manager, will oversee the production, logistics, and client relations of the apple pressing operation.

Krosse, former Brown’s Orchard cider manager, has 20 years of experience in agriculture. His awards include winning first place in the fresh cider category at the 2018 Mid-Atlantic Fruit and Vegetable Convention in Hershey.

Scott Topel, head cider maker and operations manager, will work with Krosse to source the apples and produce the blends.

Topel won two gold medals in Glintcap two years in a row (2016 and 2017) and has more than 20 years of cider making experience with cider education from Washington State University and Cornell University.

Topel is traveling to England in October to continue his education in traditional cider making methods.

The Stewartstown United Methodist Church (UMC) Christmas Choir is seeking additional singers to join for the Christmas season. The choir will present the cantata “The Night Before Christmas” on Christmas Eve, Tuesday, Dec. 24, at 10:30 p.m. and on Sunday, Dec. 29, at 10:30 a.m.

All singers are welcome. A modest ability to read music is

The York County Area Agency on Aging will offer Healthy Steps for Older Adults on Thursdays, Oct. 17 and 24, from 1 to 3 p.m. at Stewartstown Senior Center, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown. The evidence-based program aims to reduce fall risks among adults age 60 and older by raising awareness about the causes of falls and how to prevent them.

The free workshop is a twoday program, held for two hours each day, and is designed to be fun, social, and validating.

In an effort to help make the transition back to school easier for students and their families, Stewartstown Baptist Church (SBC) held a Christmas in July school supply collection event.

During the month of July, Barbara Gallagher and the SBC Women on Mission group, in cooperation with vacation Bible school (VBS) leader Patrick Cornell, led the church to collect more than 80 backpacks and

more than 760 packages of pencils, crayons, glue sticks, and other school supplies. During this summer’s VBS, Cornell directed the Christmas in July mission emphasis. The children collected the school items to show the love of Jesus to children in southern York County.

Library Holds Appreciation Event pg 10

In 2017, Woodcrest Retreat added a Kids Camp Bonanza, complete with camp-style activities for children, during its annual benefit auction. The activities, which feature a variety of stations, such as crafts, a nature lesson, and camp games, proved so popular, Woodcrest made them a regular part of the event. This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Bonanza will run from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. and include regularly scheduled activities from 9 to 11 a.m. and carnival games for a nominal fee from 12:30 to 3 p.m.

This yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s auction, which will be held on Saturday, Oct. 5, at Woodcrest Retreat, 225 Woodcrest Drive, Ephrata, will begin at 9 a.m. with an assortment of donated items going up for bids. Among these will be household items, home dĂŠcor, fall plants, tools, and gift certificates. Large items and specialty items

will be sold at 10:30 a.m. Homemade bread will be sold at 10:30 a.m. as well.

Baked goods made by children who attend the fair may be entered to win a cash prize. Children may enter a cookie, a cookie bar, a pie, or a cake between 8:45 and 10:30 a.m. to be judged and then auctioned at 11:30 a.m. The special baked goods sale gives children who attend camp at Woodcrest a way to help support the ministry.

Gift certificates will be auctioned at 2 p.m., and remaining food will be auctioned at 3 p.m.

Kids Camp Bonanza activities will include a chance to try a sling shot, archery, wood burning, rocket launching, and more. A doughnut-eating contest will be held at 11 a.m. A nominal fee will be charged to ride the barrel train. A bounce house will be on-site throughout the event.

Located in the courtyard of the Aspen personal care building at Landis Homes is a miniature setting that is home to a steam engine, three diesels, a trolley, two train stations, and a number of houses, churches, and businesses. â&#x20AC;&#x153;We call it the Garden Railroad Village,â&#x20AC;? said Bob Landis, one of the members of the club that keeps the trains moving from spring to fall.

â&#x20AC;&#x153;(The Europeans who first lived in this area) made practically everything they needed (from red clay): bedpans, roach traps, jugsâ&#x20AC;Śâ&#x20AC;? said Bob Hughes, potter-in-residence at Conestoga Area Historical Society (CAHS), 51 Kendig Road, Conestoga.

In his shop, located with other craftspersonsâ&#x20AC;&#x2122; shops on the ground floor of the CAHS main building, Bob has those very items on display.

Because some of Lancaster Countyâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s soils are rich in red clay, which can be easily fired, redware pottery was common among the Europeans who first moved into the area. â&#x20AC;&#x153;When I find roach traps, they usually smell like molasses,â&#x20AC;? Bob said, holding a small, conical vessel - almost like an old-fashioned beehive - in his hand.

Roaches seeking molasses or honey with which the trap was baited would

crawl in and be stuck.

The potterâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s shop was reorganized this year, and Bob stocked the shelves with examples from his collection.

There are shelves of crocks, jugs, vases, and inkwells, and there are even two shelves full of bundt pans and similar ring-shaped baking dishes. â&#x20AC;&#x153;I love the way everybody solved their problems a different way,â&#x20AC;? Bob said, commenting on the variations in design.

In contrast to the practical items, Bob also has a shelf of ring vases that are adaptations of designs spotted in places like the Winterthur Museum in Delaware. â&#x20AC;&#x153;Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve turned them into story pots,â&#x20AC;? Bob said. Pointing to a cheerful songbird, he added, â&#x20AC;&#x153;This bird is a 3-D interpretation of (one from) a fraktur.â&#x20AC;?

Redware production was relatively low-tech, and a farmer could work part time to produce the necessary vessels.

She explained that the students who received the backpacks are from the Honey Brook and Twin Valley elementary centers.

Church Supports Pantry Backpack Program Honey Brook Presbyterian Church (HBPC) recently showed its support of the Honey Brook Food Pantryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Backpack Program, which provides backpacks full of nonperishable food items to students in need during the school year.

Donegal Substance Abuse Alliance (DSAA) is moving into a new space at 78 E. Main St., Mount Joy, and executive director Stacy Emminger said with a smile, â&#x20AC;&#x153;In my mind, I see us already outgrowing this place, too.â&#x20AC;?

That is the kind of big vision that Emminger has for DSAA. Emmingerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s son, Anthony Perez, died of a heroin overdose at age 23 in 2014.

She and other Donegal-area residents who saw and experienced the negative impact of heroin and opioid abuse in the area formed DSAA to deliver supportive approaches to addiction by educating, equipping, and supporting individuals, families, and communities.

A broad range of Pennsylvania German textiles, including quilts, samplers, hand towels, bed linens, clothing, pincushions, and more, will be discussed at an upcoming lecture titled â&#x20AC;&#x153;Cloth Is My Field, Needle Is My Plow: Pennsylvania German Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Work.â&#x20AC;? This talk will be presented by Lisa Minardi, executive director of the Speakerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s House and the new Center for Pennsylvania German Studies in Trappe, Pa. It will be held Thursday, Oct. 3, at 5 p.m. at the Steinman College Center at Franklin & Marshall College.

Minardiâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s presentation will be followed by a behind-the-scenes look at show towels and samplers from the Phillips Museum of Artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s collection.

Attendees will have a unique opportunity to see textiles that are rarely on display and pulled from storage just for this special program.

This talk coincides with the current exhibit, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Stitched Stories: Womenâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Narratives in Regional Textiles,â&#x20AC;? running through Friday, Dec. 6, in Gibson Gallery at F&Mâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Phillips Museum of Art. The exhibition reexamines textiles found in the Phillips Museum of Artâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s permanent collection, crafted by women from the 19th through the 20th centuries. By analyzing the

Keep your eyes on the night sky, and you just might catch a glimpse of a friendly, flying witch making her way to the Lebanon Valley Expo Center to attend the Witches Fly North Antique and Artisan Show on Friday and Saturday, Oct. 4 and 5, in Lebanon, Pa. For 13 years, this event has showcased the best in early antiques, vintage wares, primitives, industrial, salvage and artistically created jewelry, clothing and more.

It gets better with each passing year, and Witches Fly North 2019 is sure to please all attendees again.

This fall show is hosted by Miss Morganâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Milkweed Antiques.

Owners Diane Gibble and Troy Tranquillo have watched this event grow from a small backyard casual event to a bustling, busy venue full of vendors and shoppers sporting witch hats and capes. But donâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t let the hat fool you, itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s all in fun and a great way to bring both vendors and shoppers together for a busy two days of selling and picking.

The show has grown in leaps and bounds each year, creating the need for bigger and better venues.

If you thought last yearâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s event held at the Tulpehocken Manor couldnâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t be better, think again. The Lebanon Valley Expo Center wonâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;t disappoint, with plenty of climate-controlled space indoors, as well as covered, open air space outside.

Since the show must go on, rain or shine, this venue will keep vendors and customers comfortable and provide plenty of parking.

Although every talented vendor contributes to the spirited atmosphere of the show, hosts Gibble and Tranquillo are excited to introduce several new vendors this year.

Domestic Violence Awareness Event Set On Saturday, Oct. 19, Jennifer Foxworthy, motivational speaker, author, television show host and CEO of Unstoppable You Ministries, will collaborate with pastors Alex and Yahaira Alvarado to host the Unstoppable You H.E.A.R.T. (Healthy Eliminating Abuse Relationship Talk) Domestic Violence Awareness Workshop. It will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the House of Reconciliation,

It also aligned with what Rotary considers to be the Four Way Test for actions: Is it the truth? Is it fair to all concerned?

Library Volunteers Recognized The Mason-Dixon Public Library hosted a breakfast on Aug. 10 at the library to recognize its Volunteers of the Year. The library uses many volunteers in addition to its small paid staff to provide quality services for patrons while keeping the library expenses within budget.

The two volunteers recognized this year are Anne Herzberger and Amanda “Mandy” Anderson. Herzberger has volunteered on the board of directors for multiple terms and also served as the art program director for a number of years. Anderson has been a library volunteer for more than 10 years. She volunteers mainly in the children’s room and helps out in other areas as needed.

The library is located at 250 Bailey Drive, Stewartstown. For more information about volunteer opportunities, readers may call Carol Stampler at the library at 717-993-2404.
