Students will receive free lessons, and topics will include eating healthy on a limited budget; cooking low-cost, fast, and easy meals; and keeping food safe to eat. Very loving, sweet, and always having fun - that’s how Jacquelyn Sauder Iannello describes her older sister Megan Sauder Ralston. With two and a half years between them in age, the sisters who are the youngest daughters of John and Bonita Sauder of Lititz - grew up doing nearly everything together and had a friendship that strengthened into adulthood.

Megan graduated from Lancaster Mennonite High School and went on to play Division I field hockey at Virginia Commonwealth University and earn a Master of Teaching in 2011.

She taught first-grade in the Washington, D.C., area and married the love of her life, John Ralston, in 2013.

In 2016, after finding a small lump in her breast about six months after giving birth to her son, Bryce, Megan - who was living in Charlottesville, Va., at the time and had no family history of breast cancer - made an OB-GYN appointment and was told by two doctors that the lump was a blocked milk duct. “She was nursing at the time, and the doctors said it was going to go away,” said Jacquelyn. “She was misdiagnosed.”

Megan’s pain continued to increase to the point of being unable to lift her son. She returned to the doctor weeks later and was directed to a breast care clinic where she had a mammogram, ultrasound, and biopsy completed within the week. She was diagnosed with a pregnancyrelated breast cancer five days after her 30th birthday.

Inspired by the sense of support she received from her community and other women battling cancer as she began undergoing treatment, Megan wanted to start an organization with the goal of creating awareness, donating toward research, and supporting others battling breast cancer. Megan and Jacquelyn established Thrive and Grit in 2017 with a mission of pushing people to thrive under extraordinary circumstances with grit and perseverance.

“She really wanted other people to hear her story,” said Jacquelyn. “Just because you’re young doesn’t mean it can’t happen, and there definitely needs to be that awareness. Be your own advocate and push for testing if something isn’t right.”

Thrive and Grit kicked off its efforts with a Pups in Pink event at Lancaster’s Buchanan Park in 2017 and started Megan’s Fund at the Ann B. Barshinger Cancer Institute in Lancaster to financially support women under the age of 40 by helping to pay for mammograms, ultrasounds, genetic screening, early detection tools, and more. Jacquelyn noted that oftentimes insurance companies require women to be 40 years or older to qualify for assistance, and Thrive and Grit aims to fill that gap.

On Nov. 13, 2018, Megan passed away at age 31. “Through everything she never lost faith.

She had such strong faith, and that was her rock through everything,” said Jacquelyn, who is continuing the work of Thrive and Grit.

Pink Packages are another signature effort of Thrive and Grit. Jacquelyn and other volunteers create and deliver uplifting boxes filled with gift cards for cleaning services and meal deliveries and other helpful items and goodies to assist women of all ages going through breast cancer treatment. “Sometimes you’re in there for hours and you

just need something to eat or something encouraging,” noted Jacquelyn.

Thrive and Grit also donates to metastatic (stage four) breast cancer research at the University of Texas MD Anderson Cancer Center, a cutting-edge research hospital Megan traveled to.

“She really wanted us to continue (Thrive and Grit), and it is healing to keep it going,” reflected Jacquelyn. “She wanted to help people and tell her story. If we can help just one person (by sharing Megan’s story), it’s worth it.”

Ten men will unite to fight breast cancer with the American Cancer Society (ACS) through participation in the Real Men Wear Pink campaign.

This is the campaign’s inaugural year in York. Throughout October, Real Men Wear Pink participants will encourage community members to take action in the fight against

breast cancer.

In addition to wearing pink and raising awareness about breast cancer, these men will be raising funds to help the ACS attack cancer. Each Real Men Wear Pink participant accepts a fundraising challenge and will compete to be the top fundraiser among his peers by the end of the campaign.

Library To Open Fall Art Exhibit Mason-Dixon Public Library, 250 Bailey Drive, Stewartstown, will open its third art exhibit of the 2019 season on Sunday, Oct. 13, with a reception from 2 to 4 p.m. Refreshments will be served.

The exhibit will feature the work of Pauline Biggley, a Canadian-born artist who now lives locally. At the age 6, she started creating her own comic books.

She continued nurturing this love and talent through high school, and after marrying an American and moving to the U.S. she began focusing more on her artwork. Biggley minored in art at Towson University and has studied at various studios and with other artists in oil, watercolor, and pastels.

Biggley likes to paint her experiences from life and often uses photos from her family history. She has worked in walnut and India ink and colored pencil, and she is currently concentrating on oils and watercolors

Works by Pauline Biggley will be on display at the MasonDixon Public Library in Stewartstown from Sunday, Oct. 13, to Friday, Dec. 6. under the guidance of Nancy Wiseman, a former MasonDixon exhibitor.

Three longstanding community groups, along with the Spring Grove Area School District, have come together to form the Roth’s Church Road Community Partnership. In addition to the school district, the partnering groups are Spring Grove Regional Parks and Recreation Center, Windy Hill Senior Center Inc., and the YMCA of York and York County. After nearly 18 months of conversations and community-based meetings with interested stakeholders, the Roth’s Church Road Community Partnership is initiating a study to evaluate how it can operate effectively and efficiently while meeting emerging needs in the greater Spring Grove area. The site is Spring Grove Area School District’s former middle school building on Roth’s Church Road.

The study will mainly focus on how the Spring Grove Regional Parks and Recreation Center, Windy Hill Senior Center Inc., and the YMCA of York and York County can coexist in the building, deliver services, manage the building’s infrastructure needs, and pursue new funding sources. The 23rd annual Delta and Cardiff Heritage Festival will take place on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. at the Heritage Festival grounds, located at Peach Bottom Township Recreation Center, 5 Pendyrus St., Delta. The site is located at the corner of Front and Pendyrus streets.

The festival is held to raise awareness of the area’s unique and rich history. This year’s event will feature displays of happenings in 1919, such as the Prohibition, the 19th Amendment, and the end of

World War I with the Versailles Treaty. There will also be a collection of classroom DAR quilts courtesy of Mrs. McGraw, a collection of other recent donations from Margaret Vitare and the Baker Tin Shop, and a photo collage of the Welsh Cottage that was recently purchased. The special annual theme of slate splitting will also be a highlight.

Churches, civic groups, and youth groups will be on-site to provide information and raise funds. Craft and food vendors will be on-site, as well, and there

will be children’s games.

The Old Line Museum will offer items for sale in addition to a silent auction and giveaway drawing, along with basket items. Donations are being accepted, and donations are tax exempt as the museum is a 501(c)(3).

The festival is recognized as the biggest fundraising day for the Welsh Cottages at Coulsontown and the Old Line Museum.

Free Community Line Dances Scheduled Chanceford Presbyterian Church, 1784 Woodbine Road, Airville, will start up its free community outreach line dances on Saturday, Oct. 12, from 6 to 10 p.m. The dances will typically be held on the second Saturday of each month from October to April.

Each night a dance will be taught at about 8 p.m., with “Keep It Simple” to be taught this month. Attendees are encouraged

Library To Host Appraisal Clinic Glatfelter Memorial Library will host an appraisal clinic from 6 to 8 p.m. on Thursday, Oct. 17, at the library, 101 Glenview Road in Spring Grove. Crime Stoppers Slate Fundraiser York County Crime Stoppers will host its second annual Top Dog fundraiser on Sunday, Oct. 13, from 11 a.m. to 2 p.m. at John Rudy County Park, 400 Mundis Race Road, York. During the event, York County police departments will vie for the Top Dog award by creating a one-ofa-kind hot dog recipe.

Event attendees will sample the hot dogs to determine who is Top Dog.

The October project will be several types of leaf designs with different techniques. The goal is to have the students experience art through the use of various

kinds of materials and acrylic paint.

Salons Collect Donations For SU2C Ratner Companies, parent company of Hair Cuttery, Bubbles, and Salon Cielo, has announced its new collaboration with Stand Up To Cancer (SU2C). Wagman hosted a summer version of Take Your Child to Work Day on Aug. 2 at its York office.

Wagman hosted its summer version of Take Your Child to Work Day on Aug. 2 at its York offices. The event was also held at the company’s Dinwiddie, Va., office. The annual event, which the company has been hosting for nine years, invited employees to bring

their children or their grandchildren to work for a funfilled program for all ages from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m.

Parents and children from the York offices began this year’s program with a walking tour of recent and current projects, including Wagman Construc-

tion’s “green” office space, the newly renovated 1741 Club at the York Revolution Stadium, the completed York Academy Upper School, and the soon-tobe renovated Keystone Kidspace located in the former York Armory building.

The day also included a safety

demonstration, estimating contests, and an interactive presentation featuring Wagman history, careers in construction, and current projects. Each child also created a concrete handprint to decorate and take home. Before lunch, everyone enjoyed the “equipment rodeo,” where participants could climb on and learn about construction equipment.

After lunch and cold treats, older children and adults had the opportunity to engage in virtual reality demonstrations or shadow their parent for the rest of the day.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank recently announced that it is receiving a donation of $122,000 from Sheetz For the Kidz, a charitable organization driven by the employees of Sheetz Inc. to help provide hunger relief to children in central Pennsylvania. The funds will be used to support the transformation of the food bank’s youth programs.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank helps to provide 127,000 meals annually to children in need through its network of local agency partners, including food pantries, soup kitchens and meal programs.

The Central Pennsylvania Food Bank, a member of the Feeding America network, is one of 27 food banks to receive this funding from Sheetz For the Kidz. It is projected that this grant will enable the food bank to restructure its traditional backpack programs, which only

serve the child, into school pantry and mobile distribution programs, which will feed the whole family.

As a regional convenience store, Sheetz is committed to helping to fight childhood hunger in the communities it serves. Through its Made-to-Share program, Sheetz is rescuing food from its 588 stores and donating it to Feeding America member food banks located in its six-state footprint.

The York Revolution has announced that average attendance in 2019 increased 5% over the previous year, while total attendance was up 10% over 2018’s figure.

Revolution president Eric Menzer said the team’s average attendance climbed from 2,825 in 2018 to 2,971 in 2019. Menzer attributed the per-game increase to new advertising and group sales efforts, a streetlevel marketing campaign, and an enhanced focus on familyfriendly entertainment.

When the team’s regular season ended on Sept. 22, a total

of 199,045 people had attended 67 Revolution single or doubleheader games, with three of the team’s 70 calendar dates lost to inclement weather. In 2018, the Revolution hosted games on 64 days of its 72-day schedule and drew 180,807 people.

LifePath Christian Ministries has appointed Steve Brubaker, chief program officer, to the position of interim executive director, effective immediately.

Brubaker has worked at LifePath since 2017. Brubaker will remain in this leadership role until a new chief executive officer is named.

A search is expected to begin soon, according to board chair Jeffrey Kreuer.

Brubaker is a graduate of the Lancaster Bible College and holds a master’s degree in guidance and counseling from Millersville University.
