USPS Shares Mailbox Reminders The United States Postal Service (USPS) has released several tips to encourage customers on city motorized, rural, or highway contract box delivery routes to examine and, where necessary, improve the appearance of their mailboxes. The USPS reminds customers of the need for providing mailboxes that are: approved by the postmaster general, safe to use, conveniently located, and neat in appearance. According to the USPS, mailboxes that meet these four requirements help delivery and collection operations and improve service to the entire route. Some of the typical activities that may be necessary include: replacing loose hinges on a mailbox door, repainting a mailbox that may have rusted or started to peel, remounting a mailbox post that may have become loose, and replacing or adding house numbers. Approved traditional or contemporary curbside mailboxes are required whenever a mailbox is newly installed or replaced. However, a custom-built curbside mailbox may be used if the postmaster gives prior approval

and if the mailbox conforms generally to the same requirements as approved manufactured curbside mailboxes. A mailbox should display the street name and house number or, if house numbers are not authorized, the assigned box number on the side of a single mailbox or on the doors of grouped mailboxes visible to the approaching carrier. The street number, box number, and/or any other address information must be inscribed in a contrasting color in neat letters and numerals not less than 1 inch in height. Customers are encouraged to group mailboxes whenever practical, especially where many mailboxes are located at or near crossroads, service turnouts, or similar locations. If the mailbox is on a street other than the one on which the customer resides, the street name and house number must be on the mailbox. It is generally in the customers’ best interest to display their address on both sides of the box. Police, fire, and rescue personnel often depend on mailbox information to locate people, and they may
approach from a different direction than the carrier. In all instances, placing the owner’s name on the box is optional. Generally, customers should install mailboxes with the bottom of the mailbox at a vertical height of between 3.5 to 4 feet from the road surface. However, because of varying road and curb conditions and other factors, the USPS recommends that customers contact the postmaster or carrier before erecting or replacing mailboxes and supports. The curbside mailbox must be on the right-hand side of the road in the carrier’s travel direction in all cases where traffic conditions make it dangerous for the carrier to drive to the left to reach the mailboxes, or where doing so would constitute a violation of federal, state, or local traffic laws and regulations. Mailboxes should be placed so the carrier can safely and conveniently serve them without leaving the vehicle. Carriers are subject to the same traffic laws and regulations as other motorists. Customers must remove obstructions, including vehicles, trash cans,
and snow, that impede efficient delivery. Except when a mailbox is temporarily blocked, carriers must have access to the mailbox without leaving the vehicle. The USPS does not approve support posts. In addition, the USPS does not regulate mounting of mailboxes for purposes of traffic safety. Mailbox posts are often subject to local restrictions, state laws, and federal highway regulations. In areas where snow removal is a problem, the USPS suggests using a semi-arch or extended arm-type support, which allows snowplows to sweep near or under boxes without damaging supports. For further information on authorized post and support mountings, customers may contact either American Association of State Highway and Transportation Officials, 444 N. Capitol St. N.W. Suite 249, Washington, D.C., 200011-1512, or Federal Highway Administration Office of Highway Safety HHS 10, 400 Seventh St. S.W., Washington, D.C., 20590-0003. New Veterinary Initiative Means Fewer Stressed Pets At The Vet Patton Veterinary Hospital Fosters Fear Free Environment for Pets RED LION, Pennsylvania – May 12, 2018 – The Patton Veterinary Hospital is among the leaders in the nation making a visit to the vet a positive experience. The American Animal Hospital Association (AAHA) estimates there are 27,000 small animal hospitals in the United States. During the month of August, the Patton Veterinary Hospital, joins only 39 other facilities across the nation and Canada reaching the prestige certification of Fear Free Practice. Nationally known veterinarian Dr. Marty Becker had the idea for a Fear Free campaign after hearing noted veterinary behaviorist Dr. Karen Overall speak on anxiety and fear in animals in 2009. He launched his “Fear Free Initiative” in 2016 with a view to make visits to veterinary hospitals less stressful for both pets and their owners. “Simply put,” says Dr. Becker, “Fear Free is a commitment to better pet health and well-being based on an understanding of the detrimental effects of fear and stress on animal health.” Many pet owners are familiar with the anxiety surrounding a veterinary visit – the cat who resists going into her carrier or the dog who puts on the brakes when he arrives at the vet’s front door. In fact, a Bayer Veterinary Care usage study reported that 37% of dog owners and 58% of cat owners stated their pets hate going to the vet. Patton wants to change this. “A fearful pet is an unhappy pet, and when pets are unhappy, so are their owners and so is the veterinary staff,” says Dr. Walters, one of Patton’s associate vets. “We
love animals and hate to see them in distress. Our goal in creating a fear free environment is to make your pet’s visit go as smoothly and as comfortably as possible. Reducing fear makes for calmer, happier pets, better exams, and makes future visits easier when pets have a positive experience.” Patton Veterinary Hospital employs gentle handling techniques, use of food treats or a pet’s favorite toy, and use of anti-anxiety medications or sedation in order to put pets at ease. Procedures are performed wherever pets are most comfortable such as on the floor or in their owners’ laps as part of the hospital’s “Fear Free” protocol. Patton Veterinary Hospital has been part of Red Lion and York County since 1916 and is currently owned by Dr. Douglas Schmidt. Patton’s mission statement is “To work with our clients and the community to inform, to educate and to provide all companion animals with quality care in a low-stress, family environment.” For more information, please visit www.pattonvethospital.com.

The artwork of plein air painters at the Hanover Area Arts Guild will be on display from Tuesday, Oct. 2, through Thursday, Oct. 25, at Art Downtown, 32 Carlisle St., Hanover. “Plein Air Only” features art by six veteran artists, which was created “en plein air,” or outdoors. Often, the plein air group critiques each other’s work after they have painted for two or three hours. Sharon Benner organized the group, which has been meeting since the fall of 2016. The painters get together every Thursday morning at different locations. They’ve painted at Codorus State Park and Lake Marburg, the Gettysburg battlefield, the Warehime-Myers Mansion in Hanover, the Union Mills Homestead in Maryland and various locally owned properties. During the winter, the group retreats to the Arts Guild, and expands on paintings or works on other studies. The group features Benner, who works in oils; Felicity Sidwell, who also paints with oils; Jerry Gadd, who uses watercolors; Sue Greenfield, who prefers acrylics; and Mary Moores and Rebecca Yates Shorb, both of whom specialize in pastel. A reception is planned for Friday, Oct. 5, from 5 to 7 p.m. at Art Downtown. The public is invited and the artists will be on hand to discuss their paintings and techniques. The exhibit may be viewed during regular gallery hours from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. on Tuesdays to Thursdays, from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Fridays, and from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. on Saturdays. Admission is free. For more information, readers may contact 717-632-2521 or info@hanoverareaarts.com.

surveys from the Pennsylvania Land Office, or even drawings people make themselves from deeds or other documents can be helpful in unravelling genealogical mysteries. The program will show how land plats have solved real research problems, including locating unknown cemeteries, establishing family relationships, sorting out same-name individuals, and providing evidence when more traditionally used record sets are silent.
The Arbor Day Foundation has announced that anyone who joins the foundation in September will receive one of the following tree packages based on their location: 10 Arizona cypress, 10 live oak, or a mix, consisting of the following trees: Eastern redbud, white pine, sugar maple, white flowering dogwood, pin oak, red maple, river birch, silver maple, northern red oak and Colorado
Prevent Blindness, an eye health organization, has declared September as Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month to help educate the public on the need to protect vision while participating in sports activities. New annual data from Prevent Blindness shows that more than 33,000 Americans were treated for sports-related eye injuries last year. Eye injuries from any sport may include infection, corneal abrasions, fracture of the eye socket, swollen or detached retinas or a traumatic
blue spruce. The trees will be shipped postpaid with enclosed planting and care instructions at the right time for planting between Monday, Oct. 15, and Monday, Dec. 10. The 6- to 12-inch trees are guaranteed to grow or they will be replaced free of charge. To become a member of the foundation and receive the free trees, readers may visit www.arborday.org/september.

cataract. Eye injuries from water sports may include eye infections and irritations, and scratches or trauma from other swimmers. As part of September’s Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness has posted tips on buying sports eye protectors. Shoppers should always consult an eye care professional to get the best eye protection for their sport and lifestyle. Wearers of prescription glasses should ask their eye doctor to fit them for prescription eye protection. Monocular athletes, those with only one eye that sees well, should ask their eye doctor what sports they may safely play. Athletes should not buy eye protection without lenses. Only lensed protectors are recommended for sports use. Athletes should make sure the lenses either stay in place or pop outward in the event of an accident. Lenses that pop in against the eyes may cause serious injury. Fogging of the lenses can be a problem when a person is active. Some eye protection options are available with anti-fog coating. Others have side vents for additional ventilation. Shoppers should try on different types to determine which is most comfortable for them. Shoppers should check an eye protector’s packaging to see if the item has been tested for sports use and if it is made of polycarbonate material. Polycarbonate eye protection is the most impact resistant. Sports eye protection should be padded or cushioned along the brow and bridge of the nose. Padding will prevent the eye guards from cutting the skin. Athletes should try on eye protectors to determine if they are the right size. The strap should be adjusted so it is not too tight or too loose. Athletes should consult their eye care professional to ensure eye protectors have a comfortable, safe fit. During Sports Eye Safety Awareness Month, Prevent Blindness is offering printed materials to assist eye care professionals in educating consumers on the importance of eye safety during sports. To request a free kit, readers may contact Angela Gerber at 973-882-0986, ext. 972, or agerber@libertysport.com. For more information on sports eye injury prevention or contact lens safety, readers may call Prevent Blindness at 800331-2020 or visit www.prevent blindness.org/sports-eye-safety.
