The Ma and Pa Railroad Heritage Village, 1258 Muddy Creek Forks Road, Airville, will hold its 21st annual Railroad Heritage Day on Saturday, Sept. 22, though the village was recently affected by a damaging flood. Ma and Pa Society members were aided by dozens of community volunteers who helped to clean up the mud and debris that littered the village after the flooding of Aug. 31.

The annual open house will take place from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m.

It will feature special exhibits, presentations, displays, demonstrations, children’s activities, food, tours of the historic village and motorcar train rides through the scenic Muddy Creek Valley.

Due to the severe track damage caused by the flood, only 1.2 miles of the track used for a 2.4-mile round trip will be in operation on Heritage Day. Train rides will start every half-hour. Train rides will be free, but tickets are required and must be picked up at the station inside the A.M. Grove General Store. Free tickets for specific train times may be reserved online for a nominal handling fee at www.MaAndPaRailroad.com.

Passengers are asked to consider making a donation to support flood recovery efforts and restoration of the damaged track.

Donations for track restoration may be made at Heritage Day or through a GoFundMe page that can be accessed from the aforementioned website.

Heritage Day attractions located in the village will take attendees back to life as it was just over 100 years ago. Visitors may tour the A.M. Grove General Store, which was built in 1899.

The store houses a post office, a railroad ticket office, a player piano, a hand-operated freight elevator, and the vintage merchandise and furnishings of the store. Other village buildings include the historic roller mill, fertilizer warehouse, bank barn, and 9,000-bushel grain elevator.

More than a dozen historically trained, costumed interpreters will be available to interact with guests, answering questions and providing historical details.

Outside, track working demonstrations will be offered, and visitors may pump their way down the track on a handcar. As an added attraction, Heritage Day is the only time each season when Ma and Pa locomotive No. 82 and caboose No. 2007 are open to the public.

Special exhibits on Heritage Day will include extensive Ma and Pa artifacts from the collection of Don Jones and Hydes station artifacts by Jeff Arrington.

The Pennsylvania Lego Users Group will present its diorama of the Ma and Pa railroad, depicting the station in Red Lion and various pieces of equipment used during different eras of the railroad operation. The 17-by-3-foot display is made entirely of Legos.

Portions of the railroad tracks at the Ma and Pa Railroad Heritage Village were damaged during a recent flood.

Ma and Pa Society members and community volunteers cleaned up mud and debris at the Ma and Pa Railroad Heritage Village after an Aug. 31 flood.

Food will be available for purchase from members of the Prospect United Methodist Church of Gatchellville.

A slideshow on historic floods of the Ma and Pa will be presented by Ma and Pa historian Walt Holloway. He will put the recent flood in the context of previous events, including the

epic floods of 1911 and 1933.

Holloway’s connection to the railroad goes back five generations. The Baltimore and Delta Railroad, the Maryland narrow gauge predecessor of the Ma and Pa, was organized at a meeting in the Forest Hill, Md., store of his great-great-grandfather, John B. Roe.

The Delta Area Senior Center, located in the Peach Bottom Township Building at 5 Pendyrus St., has announced its upcoming activities. Free Wi-Fi, Wii video games, and walking is available from Monday to Friday. A hot lunch is served on weekdays at noon for a donation. Denise will lead the chair exercises at 11 a.m., and the challenges will be held at 12:30 p.m. Chef Marty will lead a cooking demonstration featuring free samples at 1 p.m. The art class will meet from 3 to 4:30 p.m., and the Quilts of Valor group will meet at 6 p.m.

The Sequence players will meet at 9 a.m. on Thursday, Sept.

20. At 9:30 a.m., Ruthie Harris will lead individuals in a glass beading craft project. There is no charge, and all materials will be provided. Patrick Lampman will

perform country and gospel music at 11 a.m. After lunch, the pinochle players will meet from 1 to 3 p.m.

On Friday, Sept. 21, mystery bingo will be played from 9:30 to 11:30 a.m. Chair exercises will begin at 11 a.m., followed by challenges at 12:30 p.m. The knitting and cribbage groups will both meet from 1 to 3 p.m. Sept. 21 will be the last day the senior center will accept donations for the Gigantic Indoor Yard Sale, which will be held on Saturday, Sept. 29, from 8:30 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.

The dominoes players and the Sit and Sew group will both meet at 9 a.m. on Monday, Sept. 24. A Bible study will start at 10 a.m., and chair exercises will begin at 11 a.m. Challenges will begin at 12:30 p.m.,

followed by the crochet class and Sew For Vets at 1 p.m. The pinochle players will meet at 7:30 p.m.

On Tuesday, Sept. 25, bingo and pickle ball will begin at 9:30 a.m.

Wii Jeopardy will be played at 12:30 p.m., followed by Phase 10 at 1 p.m. The Creative Writing Class will meet from 1:15 to 2:30 p.m.

The Creative Writing Class is a group of aspiring writers who meet every Tuesday from September to May to hone their skills. The group is open to any Pennsylvania resident over the age of 60. Writers of all levels of skill are welcome. There is no fee, but participants are encouraged to bring a notebook and several No. 2 pencils with good erasers.

The class is taught by Ann Rose, a retired Maryland English teacher.

Celebrating York’s Unity Through 10,000 Acts of Kindness is seeking artwork to include on posters throughout the county over the next 10 months.

To enter the contest, students from preschool through grade 12 are invited to draw or paint a picture of what kindness looks to them on 8.5-by11-inch paper. There will be one winner for preschool, elementary school, middle school, and high school.

Winners will be chosen by local artists Carol Oldenburg and Ophelia Chambliss and local art teachers. Winners will be announced on Monday, Oct. 15,

Ruins Park Will Host Events Several events will take part at Ruins Park, 30 Enterprise St., Glen Rock, this fall.

The annual Bluegrass Harvest Festival will take place on Saturday, Sept. 22, from noon to 5 p.m.

The festival will feature music that reflects the spirit of Glen Rock and southern York County. It will include performances by Jacob Panic from noon to 1:30 p.m. and

The City of York will present the 24th annual York Bike Night on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 3 to 9 p.m. in and around Continental Square in downtown York.

The street party will feature a motorcycle parade, food and merchandise vendors, live entertainment, and informational exhibits. The event will be held in conjunction with the annual Harley-Davidson York Vehicle Operations open house.

Carrie Becker will sing the national anthem at Continental Square at 3 p.m. to officially kick off the festivities.

Parade participants will leave the York Expo Center at 4:30 p.m., traveling east on Market Street to Broad Street and then traveling back to the Continental Square area. Anyone who would like to ride in the parade should arrive at the York Expo Center between 2:15 and 4:15 p.m. and enter using the Highland Avenue gate. No preregistration is required, and all makes and models are welcome. Local Corn will perform at the Expo Center during the parade staging.

Museum Slates Native American Festival Indian Steps Museum, 205 Indian Steps Road, Airville, will hold its 35th annual Native American Festival and Powwow on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. and Sunday, Sept.

The festival will celebrate Native American arts, culture, and music. It will include drumming and a dance circle, with

Windsor Church of God, 1125 Manor Road, Windsor, will present a concert by Greatly Blessed during the 9 a.m. worship service on the church’s Fall Rally Day, Sunday, Sept. 23. The event is open to the public. Fall Rally Day at Windsor is a tradition of many years.

Greatly Blessed has been singing Southern gospel music for more than seven years. The musicians are all active members at the Windsor Church of God, holding positions such as Sunday school teacher, Sunday school officer, and church officer.

The group includes Linda Billet, Vada Himes, Bonnie Neff, Roland Fauth, and Dale Neff.

Billet plays the organ and is a church council member. Himes plays the piano and is a church council member. Fauth plays the piano, the organ, and other instruments, and he is a church council member. Dale is the

manager of Greatly Blessed and selects most of its music. He is also a church council member.

More than 48 years ago, Himes and the Neffs sang in a group called The Gospel 3. On

Friday, Sept. 28, they will begin their 49th year of singing Southern gospel music together.

Active Shooter Presentation Slated The Pennsylvania State Police will offer a two-hour Active Shooter Presentation on Monday, Sept.

24, from 7 to 9 p.m. at New Hope (Fissel’s) United Church of Christ, 3426 Fissel’s Church Road, Glen Rock. The presentation will be led by a representative of the Domestic Security Section of the State Police’s Intelligence Division.

Audio and video clips will be used to demonstrate what may occur during an active shooter situation. The presentation is designed to cover all venues, such as places of worship, open spaces, education facilities, public settings and shopping facilities. Statistics, trends, and real incidents will be discussed. The presenter will also discuss behaviors, thoughts, and feelings that may contribute to a person becoming an active shooter.

The York County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs recently honored veterans through sponsorship of the annual York County Veterans Shoot that was held on July 14. The Starview Sportsmen’s Association hosted approximately 75 attendees at this year’s event, where veterans enjoyed a luncheon and competed in a clay shoot. Dinner featuring steak followed the shoot, and a variety of door prizes were awarded. The York County Federation of Sportsmen’s Clubs noted that numerous donors contributed to the success of the event, which aimed to honor veterans.

The Glen Rock Historic Preservation Society will meet on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at 7:30 p.m. at the metal sculpture shop and gallery of local artisan Robert Machovec, located at

She had the greatest number of winning entries in the horticulture category.

Soldiers Will Share Experiences and other experiences they have had while serving.

The soldiers have been in the Army for periods of time ranging from 2 to 20 years. They currently serve in diverse jobs with units across the United States.

The soldiers who will share their stories are as follows.

Sgt. Stephen J. Caskey, an Army allied trades specialist, is the son of Todd and Lynn Caskey of Spring Grove. He is also the husband of Angel Caskey. Stephen is a 2007 graduate of York County School of Technology.

Spc. Matthew A. Peters, an information technology specialist, is the son of Carl and Kelly Peters of York. He is a 2015

graduate of Dover High School.

Spc. Austin G. Barnett has arrived for duty as a wheeled vehicle mechanic. Barnett is the son of Dennis and Nikki Barnett of Wrightsville. He is a 2014 graduate of Eastern York Senior High School.

Cpl. Christopher S. Winters is currently a heavy equipment maintainer, but is in the process of changing jobs to be an Army nurse. Winters is the grandson of Jean Saasaa of Dover. He is also

the husband of Brandi Winters.

Family Hiking Day will occur on Saturday, Sept. 22. Appalachian Trail (AT) section hiker and Eagle Scout Award candidate David Lukes Jr. will lead 3- to 4-mile hikes at Rocky Ridge County Park, 3699 Deininger Road, York. Hikers should meet at the first lot on the left, near the restrooms. Hikes will depart at 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m.

A 14-mile hike will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30. Participants will meet at the Boscov’s parking lot near Red Robin and depart at 8 a.m. There is a carpool fee.

Participants will hike on the AT; the hike will include Pulpit Rocks, the Pinnacle, and Port Clinton, along with a 1,000 foot climb. Attendees should wear study hiking boots or shoes and bring water, a lunch, and snacks. They should note the Pinnacle mentioned is not the one located along the Susquehanna River. The hike leader is David Lukes.

A 3.5-mile hike on the Mary Anne Furnace Trail at Codorus State Park will take place on Sunday, Sept. 30. The trek will feature a lake, wetlands, creeks, and woods. Attendees may carpool from Woodberry Road at 1 p.m.

Attendees may also choose to join between 1:30 and 1:45 p.m. at the Codorus overflow parking lot between campground loops B and C. There is a carpool fee. Participants should bring water, snacks, sturdy trail shoes or boots, and bug spray.

Planning Commission Posts Meeting The York County planning commission has scheduled the second of three public information sessions to discuss creating a county stormwater authority to combat flooding and water pollution in York County. The meeting will take place on Tuesday, Sept. 25, at the York Learning Center, 300 E. Seventh Ave., York, from 6 to 8 p.m. Doors will open at 5:30 p.m.

The purpose of the meeting is to further educate the public on the possibility of creating a countywide stormwater authority and, if created, how the authority would operate, what services it would provide, and what fees would be assessed. Planners will present an

update on the exploration process and answer questions from the public. Breakout groups will form for property-specific items.

If approved by the York County commissioners, a stormwater authority would address flooding and pollution problems by investing in stream restoration, erosion control and reforestation projects along waterways throughout the county. Approximately 1,100 miles of streams that do not meet mandated environmental standards have been identified in York County, and many miles of streams have not yet been tested.

The planning commission has identified 215 locations on roads

in the county that experience frequent flooding problems.

The county is considering the stormwater authority option while Pennsylvania and neighboring states work together to clean the Susquehanna River and the Chesapeake Bay. The stormwater authority would work to help York County meet its responsibilities to reduce the amount of nitrogen, phosphorus and sediment that flows into the Susquehanna River from local waterways.

The final public information session will take place on Thursday, Nov. 8. Residents may obtain updates and submit comments at www.yorkstormwater.com.

Sun Protection Tips Provided As the busy back-to-school season sets in, sun protection may slip down the list of health and wellness priorities. But harmful ultraviolet (UV) rays are present year-round, and one study notes that children sustain a significant amount of sun exposure at school.

About 23 percent of lifetime UV exposure occurs before the age of 18, and this exposure can have farreaching effects.

Sun damage is cumulative, so sun exposure during childhood can contribute to skin cancer risk later in life. The best way to mitigate that risk is to educate young children on effective sun protection, instilling healthy habits that will last a lifetime. Children should understand that summer vacation is not the only time they are exposed to the sun’s rays.

The Skin Cancer Foundation offers several recommendations for keeping children sun-safe during the school year. UV rays are most intense from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m., and this is when students are usually outside for recess, physical

education class, and after-school sports. Parents should check with the school to see if there are adequate places for students to seek shade during outdoor activities.

Shade can be provided by gazebos and roof structures, awnings, shade sails, and natural shade, such as thickly leaved trees.

Clothing is the single most effective form of sun protection for the body, children should be sent to school in densely woven and brightor dark-colored fabrics, which offer the best defense. The more skin that is covered, the better, so long sleeves and long pants should be chosen whenever possible.

Children should be sent to school with a wide-brimmed hat and UV-blocking sunglasses to protect their face, neck, and eyes.

If a child will not wear a widebrimmed hat, a baseball cap is better than nothing.

Sunscreen should be part of the morning routine. At least 30 minutes before children go outside, parents should apply a broad spectrum (UVA/UVB) sunscreen with

an SPF 30 or higher to their skin.

Older children should learn to apply sunscreen themselves and make it a routine habit. To remain effective, sunscreen should be reapplied every two hours or immediately after swimming or sweating. At a minimum, remind children to reapply sunscreen before after school sports and outdoor activities.

One ounce of sunscreen (about the size of a golf ball) should be applied to the entire body. Parents should remind children to cover those easy to miss spots, such as the back of ears and neck, as well as the tops of the feet and hands.

There is a chance a school does not allow students to use sunscreen or wear a hat outdoors during the school day without written permission from a physician. If that is the case, The Skin Cancer Foundation has created a sun protection permission form that parents and doctors can sign, allowing students to bring these items to school to apply and use as needed. The form is available at www.skincancer.org/schoolnote.
