Sparrow Place, a local nonprofit looking to provide safe housing and restorative, trauma-informed care to female survivors of domestic sex trafficking, will host its Dress for Freedom event on Saturday, Sept. 8, from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. at Grace Church Shrewsbury, 473 Plank Road, New Freedom.

The event will offer an opportunity for girls and women of York County to feel empowered by coming together for a cause. It will also provide a place for teenagers to pick out a dress for homecoming, the winter dance, or prom.

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, has announced its upcoming activities. The center serves a hot lunch at 11:30 a.m. each day, and attendees are encouraged to arrive at about 11:20 a.m.

The center offers a variety of programs during the week. HoopFit is offered on Tuesdays at 9:15 a.m., isometric exercises take place at 9:15 a.m. each day, tai chi is held at 10:15 a.m. each day, and Stretch Yoga takes place at 9:15 a.m. on Mondays. Line dancing is offered at 10 a.m. on Wednesdays. Center attendees may also use exercise equipment and walk in the gym every morning. The center’s weights class, which includes using weights and working on agility, is held at 9 a.m. on Fridays, and interested participants are encouraged to arrive a little early, as seating is limited.

Additional activities offered by the senior center include the

acrylic art class on Monday at 9:15 a.m., watercolor art class on Tuesdays at 9 a.m., ceramics on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m., Walking Through the Bible on Thursdays at 8:45 a.m., and Friends Together Craft Class on Fridays at 9 a.m. A class on card making, blanket knotting, and a quilters’ group are also offered.

Special events are also planned.

A lunch will be held on Labor Day, and a Halloween party is slated for Wednesday, Oct. 31. A trip to a Lancaster dinner theater will take place on Thursday, Nov. 1, and reservations are currently being accepted. Other activities will be a trip to the Pennsylvania Craft Show on Wednesday, Nov. 28, and a Christmas party on Thursday, Dec. 13. A trip to see the Christmas show at a Lancaster theater is being planned, with details forthcoming.

Ministry To Host Indoor Yard Sale Shining Light Ministries, 401 E. Locust St., Dallastown, will offer clothing and household items to community members in need this year.

The ministry, affiliated with Winterstown United Methodist Church, receives donations of clothing and household items.

Volunteers are needed to sort, fold, hang, and display the items that the organization receives. Volunteer hours typically occur on Mondays, Tuesdays, and Wednesdays from 6 to

8:30 p.m.

Shining Light Ministries will offer items to the public for a nominal fee. Any funds received go toward operating expenses, and all proceeds beyond these expenses go to various outreach projects.

Doll-Steinour The wedding of Laura Anne Steinour and Derrick Michael Doll took place on June 11 at Sandpiper Cove in Duck, N.C. Gwen Taylor officiated at the 7 p.m. ceremony.

The bride is the daughter of Mary Beth and James LeVan of East Berlin. She graduated from Pennsylvania State University in 2015.

She is employed by Wellspan York Hospital in York.

The groom is the son of Michael Doll of McSherrystown. He is self employed.

The Delta Area Senior Center, located in the Peach Bottom Township Building at 5 Pendyrus St., has announced its upcoming activities. Free Wi-Fi, Wii video games, and walking are available from Monday to Friday. A hot lunch is served on weekdays at noon for a donation. Those interested in eating lunch at the center should make a reservation two business days in advance by calling the center at 717-456-5753.

On Wednesday, Aug. 29, dominoes will be played at 9 a.m. a group will meet at the Lion Bowling Center in Red Lion to bowl three games.

The senior center has also announced upcoming dates for routine foot care and flu shots. A podiatrist will visit the center on Sept. 4. An appointment is needed to see the podiatrist. Medicare will pay for the service if the patient’s yearly deductible has been met; otherwise, the client will be billed for a regular office visit. Flu shots will be available on Tuesday, Sept.

18. No appointment is needed to obtain a flu shot. Individuals should bring identification and all insurance cards.

The center is currently collecting clean items in good condition to sell at its large indoor yard sale. Books, televisions or computers will not be accepted.

Activities at the Delta Area Senior Center are open to Pennsylvania residents who are 60 years of age or older. There are no registration fees or membership dues. Although some activities have a nominal fee, the majority are free.

Stewartstown Senior Center, located in Stewartstown United Methodist Church at 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, will sponsor two art classes. Participants do not need to be a member of the center or a senior to take part in either class.

A Watercolor Painting Class will take place on Tuesdays, Sept. 4 to Oct. 23. The beginner class will run from 9:15 to 11:15 a.m., and an intermediate class will be held from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. Nancy Wiseman, a York County artist, will instruct the classes.

The beginner class will teach the basics of watercolor techniques and put them to practice in creating landscapes.

Participants will learn how to compose a painting and how to paint trees, skies, water, rocks, grasses, and more.

Historical Society To Host Local Author Stewartstown Historical Society will present a program at Stewartstown United Methodist Church, 26 S. Main St., Stewartstown, in the fellowship hall on Wednesday, Sept. 5, at 7:30 p.m.

Multiple award-winning author and lecturer Scott Mingus Sr. will speak on “Slavery and the Underground Railroad in York County.” Mingus has written 20 Civil War and Underground Railroad books, along with several articles for Gettysburg Magazine and for various historical journals. For more than a decade, he has written a blog on the Civil War history of York County.

Mingus’ biography of General William “Extra Billy” Smith has won multiple awards, including the Dr. James I. Robertson Jr. Liter-

ary Prize for Confederate History. Mingus received the 2013 Heritage Profile Award from the York County History Center for his contributions to local Civil War history. He and his wife, Debi, live in York.

Copies of Mingus’ books, including “The Ground Swallowed Them Up: Slavery and the Underground Railroad in York County, Pa.,” will be available for purchase after the program. Cash and checks will be accepted as payment.

All proceeds from sales of the book will go directly to the York County History Center for its general budget.

Students Receive Award Southern Middle School students Arianna Davis and Roman Davis received the American Legion Award for 2018. It is the highest award that the American Legion gives to middle school students.

The annual award represents honor, courage, scholarship, leadership, and Americanism.

Glen Rock American Legion Post 403 second vice commander Eric Mueller and Auxiliary president Sharon Krout presented the students with their awards at the end of the 2017-18 school year.

The students will be in ninth grade at Susquehannock High School in the fall.

Fearon Receives Teaching Award Southern Elementary School kindergarten teacher Deanna Fearon was recently awarded a Presidential Award for Excellence in Mathematics and Science Teaching (PAEMST).

Fearon recently traveled to Washington, D.C., for recognition events and professional development.

Fearon earned a bachelor’s degree in elementary education from York College of Pennsylvania. She earned her master’s degree in reading at York College, and she has taught at

Homes Dedicated By York Habitat York Habitat for Humanity announced the completion and recent dedication of its latest project, a duplex build, located on Locust Street in York City.

The dedication will took place at 836 and 838 W. Locust St. on July 28. Two Habitat for Humanity partner families have completed all requirements of the program and officially became home owners at the end of the ceremony.

In the side of the duplex located at 836 W. Locust Street,

Henry Ocasio Gomez, Maritza Rodriguez Rosado, and their son moved into their new three-bedroom home. Tonie McGhee and her four children moved into the other side of the build at 838 W. Locust Street. That home will include four bedrooms for the family as well as a back porch. One porch was added to each home.

The YCASE Faculty Exhibition, on the first floor of Marketview Arts, celebrates the personal creative output of York-area high school art teachers whose students will participate in the third annual YCASE at Marketview Arts in November. The exhibition offers an opportunity not only for the YCASE participants and their friends and peers to view the teachers as professional exhibiting artists, it also gives the community a chance to identify relationships between the works of the teachers and their students. YCASE also includes the YCASE Art Walk in October and the YCASE Finalist Exhibition in November.

The galleries at Marketview Arts are open on Tuesdays and Thursdays from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m., Wednesdays from 1 to 8 p.m., Fridays from 5 to 9 p.m., and Saturdays from 10 a.m. to 9 p.m. The galleries are closed on Sundays, Mondays, and holidays. Both exhibitions began on Aug. 24 and will have a reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, Sept. 7. All events are free and open to the public.

The Faculty Biennial, located on Marketview Arts’ third floor, offers an opportunity to view recent work by full- and part-time faculty from York College’s fine art and graphic design faculty. The exhibition reflects the faculty’s dedication to creative research and an active studio practice. The works in the exhibition represent a wide range of disciplines and media, including photography, painting, printmaking, drawing, illustration, jewelry, sculpture, and installation.

The York Catholic Senior High Student Council will sponsor a 3K run on Saturday, Sept. 8, at 9 a.m.

In the PAC-MAT model of treatment, an addiction specialist physician is at the center of the hub, providing expert guidance and support to primary care physicians in rural and underserved areas of the state. Serving as the spokes, primary care physicians provide direct patient care, including the medication-assisted treatment prescription. Patients also are connected to drug and alcohol counseling in their communities.

These grants are funded through the second 21st Century CURES grant, a $26.5 million federal grant the state received to combat the heroin and opioid epidemic by increasing access to treatment, reducing unmet treatment need, and reducing opioid overdose-related deaths through the provision of prevention, treatment, and recovery activities for substance-use disorder.

The UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery is a comprehensive addiction clinic. The center connects individuals facing an opioid use disorder to treatment through the use of medication assisted treatment.

Sister Pamela Smith will be the keynote speaker at this year’s annual Harrisburg Diocese Charismatic Renewal Day of Renewal, to be held at the Diocesan Center, 4800 Union Deposit Road, Harrisburg, on Saturday, Sept. 22, from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. The theme of this year’s Day of Renewal is “Wind and Fire of the Holy Spirit.�

Smith is secretary for Education and Faith Formation for the Diocese of Charleston, S.C., overseeing Catholic schools, parish religious education, youth ministry, young adult ministry and campus ministry across the state. She holds a doctorate in theology from Dusquesne University, has authored 12 books and numerous articles and poems, and is part of a volunteer ministry with the St. Francis Center at St. Helena Island. For more than 40 years, she has served in education and administration in several dioceses.

Smith’s morning keynote address will be “The Holy Spirit and Biblical Living.� The Rev. Frank Karwacki, diocesan liaison for the Charismatic Renewal for the Diocese of Harrisburg and pastor of Our Lady of Mount Carmel Catholic Church in Mount Carmel, will celebrate Mass

A Young Adult Session will be hosted by the Rev. Dwight Schlaline, pastor of Our Lady of the Visitation Catholic Church in Shippensburg and chaplain for Catholic Campus Ministries at Shippensburg University.

Persian Gulf Bonus Deadline Approaches Eligible veterans who served on active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations from Aug. 2, 1990, to Aug. 31, 1991, have until Friday, Aug. 31, to apply for a special one-time payment to honor their service and sacrifice.

The bonus program, administered by the Pennsylvania Department of Military and Veterans Affairs (DMVA), pays $75 per month for qualifying, active-duty service members up to a $525 maximum.

For personnel whose death was related to illness or injury received in the line of duty in Operations Desert Shield or Desert Storm, there is an additional $5,000 available to the surviving family. Service members who were declared prisoners of war may also be eligible for an additional $5,000.

To be eligible for the bonus, a service member must have served with the U.S. Armed Forces, a reserve component of the U.S. Armed Forces or the Pennsylvania National Guard; served on active duty in the Persian Gulf Theater of Operations during the period from Aug. 2, 1990, to Aug. 31, 1991; received the Southwest Asia Service Medal; been a legal resident of Pennsylvania at the time of active Local Events • Local Shopping • Local News

Since 2008, approximately 12,900 Persian Gulf Conflict veterans have applied for the bonus and approximately 9,600 have received a bonus for their war efforts. Individuals who received a bonus or similar compensation from any other state are not eligible for the Pennsylvania program.

UPMC Pinnacle was one of three state organizations named to receive a PAC-MAT grant to help battle the state’s opioid addiction crisis. With PAC-MAT funding, UPMC Pinnacle will strengthen its current medical-assisted treatment (MAT) and case management services to patients within the health system’s outpatient sites in Adams, Cumberland, Dauphin, Lancaster, Lebanon, Perry, and York counties.

UPMC Pinnacle Center for Addiction Recovery, 2501 N. Third St., Harrisburg, will serve as the hub and bring together primary, secondary, and tertiary care providers, as well as community and hospital administration members, to build on an addiction treatment program that increases access to care, reduces health care costs, and improves quality. This will include increasing drug and alcohol screenings within the broader network of providers, creating a Care Map for patients to research care patterns, establishing a community network of case management support, and broadening the use of MAT throughout the region by breaking down stigmas and barriers to care.
