The inaugural BLAST Pie Baking Contest was held at the Fourth of July BLAST at the Jacobus Community Park on July 4. Entrants were required to make a fruit pie from scratch. The pies were judged on their overall appearance, the taste of the filling and crust, and the overall impression of the pie. A variety of pies were entered in the contest, including a raspberry pie, a pear pie, a blackberry-blueberry crumble pie, cherry pies, apple pies, and a blueberry pie. Joanne Senft won first place with her blueberry pie, Kendra Little won second place with her cherry pie, and

Nicole Morouse won third place with her blackberry-blueberry crumble pie.

The remainder of the pies were sold by the slice as a fundraiser for the Jacobus Lions Club Inc. The Jacobus Lions Club Inc. organizes and runs the Fourth of July BLAST in Jacobus each year. Any funds remaining after expenses for the BLAST are used to support the Jacobus Ambulance services and support programs in sight, hearing, and other areas of need in the community and beyond. Church Plans Evening Of Dinner And Dancing Christ Lutheran Church, 105 S. Main St., Shrewsbury, will offer an evening of food, fun, and dancing on Saturday, Sept. 14, in the church’s parish hall. Dinner will begin at 5 p.m., followed by an evening of square dancing. All

For center members who live in the New Freedom, Shrewsbury, and Glen Rock areas and who no longer drive or who do not have transportation, the center can arrange for transportation to and from the center via rabbittransit. The service is available free for anyone age 65 and over.

CVS Expands Medication Disposal Program donated more than 970 units to community organizations such as police departments, including 135 units in Pennsylvania. Through this national effort, 408 metric tons, or around 900,000 pounds, of unwanted medication has been collected, including over 41,000 pounds in Pennsylvania alone.

The York Revolution recently announced that Revolution officials have found a successor for retiring team dog Boomer, who represented the team for 10 seasons. Soles4Souls is a nonprofit social enterprise that aims to create sustainable jobs and provide relief through the distribution of shoes and clothing around the world.

York College will receive a $6 million grant from the Pennsylvania Redevelopment Assistance Capital Program (RACP) to create a Knowledge Park on the 40-acre site of the former Schmidt Ault paper mill. The college’s award was among a number announced on Aug. 1 by Sen. Kristin PhillipsHill and Gov. Tom Wolf’s office.

The former paper mill property was purchased by York College in 2008 after extensive demolition and environmental abatement.

Wing Nutz of York, a local remote-control model airplane club, has received a national grant to host a “Take-Off and Grow” (TAG) event on Saturday, Aug. 17, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. at its airfield, located at 4390 Board Road, Manchester.

The event is intended to introduce and promote the hobby to the public.

The event will be free and open to the public. Pilots of remote-control devices are required to present a valid ID and have a current AMA registration in order to fly. Additionally, a flight simulator and trainer personnel will be available for anyone wishing to try their hand on a computer simulator. A buddyboxing system will also be set up for those who want to try

their hand at flying an actual model airplane.

There will be food and beverages available, as well as a variety of free prizes given away.

Demonstration flights will continue throughout the day, and club members will be available to answer questions. Various models will be on display, and there will be an educational session on building one’s own planes.
