York County Libraries (YCL) has announced new prizes as part of SummerQuest. YCL SummerQuest participants ages 5 to 18 have the opportunity to win a helicopter ride for completing 800 minutes or more of reading and activities this summer. A winner from each library will be randomly selected to take a ride in Mission Destiny Helicopter’s Robinson R-44 Raven 2 helicopter on Saturday, Aug. 17.

Plus, the SummerQuest participant who achieves the top number of reading and activity minutes will be flown into PeoplesBank Park to throw out the first pitch of the York Revolution game on Sunday, Aug. 18.

SummerQuest is a program that provides opportunities for

children and teenagers to stay active and keep learning during the summer break. This year’s theme, “A Universe of Stories,” invites exploration of space.

Libraries across the county have planned more than 800 free activities for children and teenagers this summer. Due to the support of sponsors York Water Company and WellSpan Health, there is no cost to participate in the program, which will run through Aug. 18.

YCL includes 13 libraries that provide print and electronic information, bestsellers, Wi-Fi, story times, book discussions and more.

York County 4-H Fair Scheduled The York County 4-H Fair will be held on Saturday, Aug. 10, and Sunday, Aug. 11, at the York County 4-H Center, 771 Stoverstown Road, York. The theme for the 2019 York County 4-H Fair is “Dream It, Do It, Show It, Earn It, Live It, 4-H.” The fair will showcase many of the different opportunities that 4-H provides to youths and families.

More than 500 projects that have been made by 4-H members will be on display. Projects are from a broad range of areas,

including but not limited to robotics, foods and nutrition, wildlife, and conservation. Food will be available for purchase, and all proceeds will benefit the York County 4-H Program.

The fair is open to the public.

The gardens and the open house are a project of the York County Penn State Extension Master Gardeners and the York County Juvenile Probation, in conjunction with the York County Parks and Recreation Department.

Located adjacent to the stone house that serves as York County Parks’ administrative headquarters, the gardens were recently awarded second place in the Demonstration Garden category of the International Master Gardener Convention’s Search for Excellence Award. They also won first place in the Demonstration Garden category of the state’s Master Gardener Convention’s Search for Excellence Award for 2014.

Master Gardeners will be onsite to answer questions. The gardens include annuals, perennials, herbs, natives and cultivars, as well as container gardens, water gardens, a garden of grasses and a raised bed to demonstrate an adaptive approach for people with physical challenges.

Library Hosts Harp Concert

The Mason-Dixon Public Library hosted a harp performance on June 23. Kris Snyder, a harper from Hands to Harps, performed one hour of music, including selections from the musical duo of Rodgers and Hammerstein. To become a member, interested readers may stop by the center and sign up, and they should bring a driver’s license or other photo ID card. The center offers tai chi at 10:15 a.m. each day. Daily isometric exercises begin at 9:15 a.m.

Center members may play bunco on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., and the center aims to have 12 players each week.

The senior center will offer trips, as well. There will be a trip to American Music Theatre on Friday,

Sept. 27. A group will travel to see “The Will Rogers Follies” at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster on Thursday, Oct. 31. Reservations and deposits are being accepted for both trips. Other trips will be announced in the future.

The senior center is selling cookbooks featuring recipes from members of the center. The sale is a fundraiser for the center.

For center members who live in the New Freedom, Shrewsbury, and Glen Rock areas and who no longer drive or who do not have transportation, the center can arrange for transportation to and from the center via RabbitTransit.

The service is available free for anyone age 65 and over.

The senior center also seeks Meals on Wheels volunteer drivers. Helpers volunteer one morning every four weeks. For more information, readers may call 717235-6060. The center delivers 48 meals for seniors every Monday, Wednesday, and Friday morning.
