The Great Chapel Picnic will be held at Chapel Church, 3050 Cape Horn Road, Red Lion, on Saturday, July 27, from 2 to 9 p.m.

The dining hall will open at 3 p.m., with the ticket line, bazaar stand, music, outside food stands and takeout soup line set to start at 2 p.m.

Musical groups to perform will be the Red Lion-Felton Band, the Chapel Collective, Set Free and White Rose Barbershop. Lawn chairs are needed. This will be a rain-or-shine event.

At the ticket line for the cafeteria dining, guests will be called in groups for available seating from 3 to 7 p.m. Parking will be available in the fields to the rear of the church grove and parish hall, but handicappedaccessible or special-needs parking will be available in the main

lot behind the church building.

A golf cart shuttle will be available for convenience throughout the day.

For the takeout line for the soup, it is suggested that guests provide their own containers.

Soup choices will be clam, ham and bean and chicken corn.

Bricker’s French Fries and Carmen’s Ice Cream will be featured food stands. A bazaar stand and a silent auction will be available throughout the day.

At 7 p.m., the quilts and crafts auction will take place in front of the bandstand. Activities for the youngsters will include cornhole, kickball, face painting, sand art and more.

Stewartstown and Shrewsbury Coin Club will celebrate the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing. On Thursday, Aug. 1, at 6 p.m., the Coin Club meeting will include a slideshow presentation featuring United States coins, foreign coins, stamps and exonumia related to the moon mission. Examples of coins and stamps will be available for public examination.

The South Central York County Senior Center, 150 E. Main St., New Freedom, will host upcoming activities. Individuals must be members of the center to participate in the center’s activities. The center also offers an acrylic art class on Mondays at 9:30 a.m., a watercolor art class on Tuesdays at 9:30 a.m., ceramics on Wednesdays at 9:15 a.m., Walking Through the Bible on Thursdays at 8:45 a.m., and the Friends Together Craft Class on Fridays at 9 a.m. Bunco is played on Thursdays at 9:15 a.m., and the center would like to have 12 players each week. The center also offers a class on card making and opportunities for blanket knotting, as well as a quilters’ group. The center offers a movie and popcorn once a

month. A podiatrist visits every nine weeks, and a nurse stops by once a month to conduct blood pressure checks. A jewelry making class is also planned.

The senior center will offer trips, as well. A trip to the York Revolution baseball game on Wednesday, July 24, has been set. A group will travel to see “The Will Rogers Follies” at Dutch Apple Dinner Theatre in Lancaster on Thursday, Oct. 31.

Reservations and deposits are being accepted. Other trips will be announced in the future.

The senior center is selling cookbooks featuring recipes from members of the center. The sale is a fundraiser for the center.

The partnership with Google is one of several initiatives Rite Aid has implemented as part of its comprehensive strategy to address prescription drug abuse and misuse. The Fire Solutions Group (FSG), a client of the J.D. Brown Center for Entrepreneurship at York College, recently hired alumnus Alexander Smith as its chief technology officer and software developer. FSG was established in 2013 as a fire testing and product development company. Smith will oversee the development of a new augmented reality tool for the fire industry, as well as work on the technical aspects of training, marketing, and technical support.

Twelve programs designed to improve the quality of life in York County are the newest recipients of grants from the York County Community Foundation’s (YCCF) Fund for York County, Beautiful York Program Fund, and Children’s Program Fund. The grants ranged from $2,301 to $20,000.

The Fund for York County is the foundation’s fund for high-impact initiatives that support quality education, workforce development, and revitalizing downtowns and neighborhoods. It consists of nearly 60 funds created by donors and designated to meet the community’s most pressing needs. Additional funds that advised grants recently include the Beautiful York Fund, which helps to assure that the beauty of York city lasts forever, and the Children’s Program Fund, a field-of-interest fund for programs that improve the lives of York

County’s children.

Fund for York County grants include the following: York Habitat for Humanity, $20,000 for Chestnut Street Construction Project Phase I, which is part of the effort to construct 14 new homes for lowincome ownership and to perform 10 to 15 critical home repairs on the 700 block of Chestnut Street in York; $2,301 to Just 4 Today Sober Living for the creation of Recovery Guidelines and Expectations for Success to help individuals entering recovery-housing programs to become productive members of the community and workforce; and $20,000 to York County Rail Trail Authority for the acquisition of 8.5 miles of dormant rail corridor from Hanover to Spring Grove and Bair to advance the development of the Hanover Trolley Trail and the revitalization of the Hanover and Spring Grove downtown districts.

Also, $5,700 to Diakon for Kinship Support Group, a support group for children who have been removed from their biological parents, often as a result of abuse or neglect; $6,000 to Philanthropic Endeavors, fiscal sponsor for Studio 117, for A’s Get Beatz, a program through which York City students will be eligible for free studio time as an incentive for consistent school attendance and good grades, with the goal of instilling good habits; and $6,000 to The Grotto Community Center for the launch of the community center, a creative hub and working space in the community that will offer a variety of services designed to spark creativity and innovation.

A Beautiful York Program Fund grant of $13,500 was given to Downtown Inc. for the promotion of downtown York’s new destination brand. Downtown Inc. will use the funds to replace the current pole banners with new “Historically Edgy” branded banners.

Children’s Program Fund grants are as follows: $4,683 to Children’s Home of York for the Independent Living Program at George Street, a community-based, residential program that serves dependent and delinquent males ages 15 to 21

from throughout Pennsylvania; $6,000 to Central Penn Food Bank for Making Breakfast a Part of the School Day: School Breakfast Outreach in York County, a program that aims to increase school breakfast participation through targeted outreach and interventions in highneed school districts, as recommended by A Seat at the Table, a project to evaluate the charitable food system in York County; and $6,000 to Accountability for Life (AFL) for its mentoring program, which mentors at-risk adolescents using an athletics-based platform designed to build the character and self-worth necessary to chart a successful course in life.

Also, $6,000 to York County Libraries for the Sensory Story Time program, which aims to help children learn and engage in innovative ways using sensoryfocused activities to supplement the early literacy benefits of traditional library story times, and $6,000 to provide necessary dental equipment for Family First Health for Kids Against Cavities program, a dental outreach program that meets children where they are at their school or day care to provide necessary oral health care.

American Legion Riders Donate Funds

Terry Gendron (holding check, left), executive director of York County Veterans Affairs, recently accepted a check from Don Bradley (holding check, right), chaplain of American Legion Riders (ALR) Wrightsville Post 469, as well as riders and guests from York County American Legion Posts, on June 18 at a monthly dinner held at Texas Roadhouse by several ALR groups from York County. The check represented the proceeds of the May dinner. A total of 24 riders and guests gathered at the June event, and a portion of each of their dinner checks was donated to the ALR to be given to the Higher Standard Project, a privately funded living facility for people in the Veterans Treatment Court program.

Riders from Dallastown Post 605, Glen Rock Post 403, Hanover Post 14, Red Lion Post 543, Shiloh Post 791 and Stewartstown Post 455 participated in the dinner.
